Millions of people saw Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett’s plea for men to open up about their mental health struggles after a friend of his committed suicide. It’s a message that has gone viral and got me thinking about a question I frequently ask myself… why don’t more men talk about their mental health? In this week’s episode of Sales Is Mental I unpacked some of my experiences, why I find it hard to open up and how I used alcohol to run from reality. I talk about why vulnerability breeds fear and how that leads to shame for many men. I also touch upon the definition of masculinity and whether or not it can truly be defined, and perhaps why archetypes and definitions prevent men from sharing what they are battling with.

I very nearly didn’t record an episode of Sales Is Mental this week as I’ve been struggling mentally. I started a new job a couple of months ago and inevitably that voice of doubt wants to hijack my progress and tell me that I can’t do it. In this episode I decided to unpack my take on imposter syndrome, how I feel about that term and why the pressure of results and doubt play a part in your development at work. I cover my experiences of feeling mentally drained and why putting your best foot forward can be exhausting. I also speak to control and why it is so important to know what you can and can’t control at work.

For Leslie Douglas, everything boils down to purpose. Her purpose is empowering sales professionals to find the right fit and add fuel to their fire. A mother, a Director of Sales Training at JB Sales and an advocate for women in all walks of life, Leslie spins many plates and so she wanted to focus on boundaries - how to create them, how to maintain them and what to do when you can’t. Perfect is the enemy of good, right? My conversation with Leslie was a really meaningful one so I hope you enjoy this episode.

In the second episode of Sales Is Mental I was joined by Nicole Brann, Sales Development Team Lead at Greenhouse. Nicole is a therapy advocate - specifically cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) - and she unpacked the nature of dysfunctional thoughts and how to build a framework which can help combat them. A former SDR who has risen through the ranks into a management role, Nicole is familiar with the pressures of leaderboards, KPIs and quota, and shared some great tips on how to keep them in perspective whilst finding the time for things you enjoy.

Welcome to Sales Is Mental, a podcast which promotes meaningful perspectives on mental health from people in the sales profession.
Hi, I'm James.
When I was 16 I began to struggle, mentally.
At 18 I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Since that day, I’ve been trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t, to ensure I feel mentally healthy.
A few years ago I made a career change from teaching to sales. Working in sales is great, it’s also a really demanding job, full of highs and lows.
With that in mind, I’m starting a podcast called "Sales Is Mental" with one goal in mind: to foster meaningful conversations about mental health with people who work in sales.
Depression and anxiety have left me feeling incredibly isolated at times, so my hope is that through this podcast, more people who work in sales will feel less alone and more connected when they are struggling with their mental health.
Whether you’re an SDR or a Sales Leader, if you would be interested in being a guest, please reach out to me via LinkedIn, email, Twitter or Instagram.
Finally, if you think this is something you or someone you know might be interested in, please use the website to sign up for alerts on when the first episode will launch.
Thank you in advance for your support.
