We're replaying an old favourite with the super knowledgeable and lovely Joanne Kennedy - the SIBO, MTHFR & Histamine Intolerance expert.
Joanne gives us a complete download of her brain to help us understand methylation and why this is such an important aspect to consider in clients presenting with histamine intolerance.
Within the skin, we can see histamine intolerance present in the form of rosacea, peri oral dermatitis, hives, eczema and acne.
Now there's a lot of hype around methylation and we can be quick to blame our gene expression such as MTHFR gene mutations as the cause of impaired methylation; but throughout this podcast we quickly turn the spotlight away from one genetic SNP and highlight the burden environmental exposures and gastrointestinal infections can have on methylation.
Specifically, we delve into the impacts of SIBO on methylation and how this can impact histamine intolerance.
In this episode, Jacinta & Joanne discuss:

If you're constantly cycling on and off the pill in the hope that the next time you get off your skin has sorted it's s*** out, then you need to listen to this
Unfortunately whilst you're on the pill, it's masking a HUGE underlying driver of acne being hyper-sebum secretion. But there's a lot more to acne than just a hormonal imbalance and many systems of weakness that you can focus on whilst you're on the pill to reduce the likelihood that your acne will come back with a vengeance once you're off the pill.
But don't stress, we asked our Post-Pill expert at Orenda Phoebe Ackland to come onto the podcast to share the exact strategy she uses with her clients so they can break the viscous cycle of going on and off the ocp.
In this episode, Phoebe will discuss:

Cervical mucus, basal body tracking, LH Test strips & cycle tracking apps - there's a bunch of different ways you can either predict and/or confirm ovulation as well as detect your fertile window phase
Unlike what they teach us in high school, you can't fall pregnant every single day of the month and the pill isn't the only tool to prevent you from falling pregnant (if that's your goal)
Understanding natural cycle tracking methods can be one of the most empowering tools to help you identify your fertile window for both conception and contraception!

Lately at Orenda we have so many new clients that are asking us what kind of skin care brand they should be using for their condition
And we are often spending heaps of time educating our clients on the importance of having their skin care reviewed by a qualified professional so we can make sure that’s not a factor impacting our clients results
So I thought, let's get Lia from Skin Education International back on the podcast to give us the facts about exactly what we should be looking for in our skincare, the importance of quality home prescriptions and the signs to look out for if a product is NOT for you.
In this episode, Lia also covers details on:
For skin therapists or clients looking for a range of topical skincare products for even the most sensitive skin, Lia is a stockist of the range Prologic, which you can learn more about here and you can also find her over on instagram at @skin_education_international

If you ever feel like you’ve been medically gaslighted before for the systemic adverse reactions that occur once you’ve withdrawn from Topical Steroids, then this is for you.
It’s a thing, it exists and it’s called Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW).
In this episode, we speak with one of Jacinta’s clients Jordan Hendey all about his journey from Topical Steroid Addiction, to being hospitalised for blood infections, to then moving to Thailand to receive treatment for TSW.
Unfortunately in this space, so many individuals are suffering with severe symptoms that are impacting their quality of life and they’re just being told “it’s your eczema flaring, go back on the steroids”.
When the reality is, TSW is nothing like eczema and steroids aren’t the long term solution.

Our Sports Nutritionist Paige is back!
We're a bit late to the new years goal sharing bandwagon but we got there eventually. In this episode we share our perspective on goal setting when it comes to health, our personal & work related goals for the year and we answer a lot of questions Jacinta gets in clinical setting related to diet.
When it comes to the diet, we often find people are constantly striving to find “the thing” that’s going to “work” for them
Whether it’s a meal plan, intuitive eating, low carb high fat, paleo or whatever name of a diet it could be
But in particular we wanted to define what we think “Intuitive Eating” really is and how this form of eating gives you permission to constantly change and vary your plate according to your needs
We also answer some questions we got through the instagram related to finding balance with exercise!

Ever wondered if the latest go to trends to "fix" your acne are actually helping or harming? If you want to fix your skin it's plain and simple - you need to work with it not against it. Which means, at an absolute base you need to start with understanding the function of your skin, the life cycle of the keratinocyte and your skin therapist must be educating you on your skin type.
This is not just for someone battling with a skin condition, but this extremely important to any skin therapist/dermal clinician wanting to up their consultation game in the treatment room and to feel confident in their clients success.
These are just a few of the key points Skin Therapist & Leading Educator Robyn McAlpine shares insights on in this podcast

Eczema can be an extremely debilitating condition with often little to no long term solutions available (until you delve into the world of Naturopathy and exactly what's going on). Conventionally, often the solution is topical steroids, but those who have been there before know the long term side effects and that it doesn't address the underlying cause.
In this episode, we are joined by one of Jacinta's previous University Lecturers and Skin Experts, Rebecca Hughes. Rebecca shares with us her knowledge on the multifaceted approach to assessing and treating Eczema and the importance of identifying your individual drivers to develop a unique treatment protocol.

We know that there is a direct connection between the health of your gut and the function of the skin - but the first thing often spoken about is probiotics or the role of the gut microbiome. There are many different facets of the digestive system which we analyse when it comes to identifying the driver of dysfunction in the gut that can be impacting a clients skin presentation. Having the tools to identify the signs/symptoms of the gut-skin axis needing some extra support is just the first step and screening for infection is the next.

Two of the most common phrases we hear from our clients with acne in their initial consultations are "I've had everything tested and everything is within range" or we hear "I've just been prescribed the pill, doxycyline and roaccutane but I actually haven't had any testing done to figure out what's going on". Acne is an extremely multi-faceted condition and the answer you need so you can break the viscous cycle of medications and multiple skin treatments is to actually find the cause of what is going on.. and the answers are in your pathology. If there is anything Jacinta is super passionate about when it comes to acne, it's testing and not guessing. There are so many factors to consider, such as the types of markers being tested, the time and day of your cycle they were tested and the reference range as to which they are compared and interpreted.
For example, did you know that the reference ranges for healthy thyroid function on a blood test actually include the data of individuals who have a thyroid disease? So a reference range which is classified as a healthy demographic, may actually include the statistics of individuals with a diagnosed condition (which you are essentially being compared against).
But no stress, Jacinta goes through everything you need to investigate to understand the cause of your acne including:

In this weeks episode, we are joined by Joanne Kennedy - the SIBO, MTHFR & Histamine Intolerance expert.
