Laura interviews Lithuanian-born musician and creator Dovydas about moving to the U.S. in 2012 to pursue American blues and rock, the cultural differences he noticed (especially warmth, casual language, and greeting strangers), and how he built a career by looping music on the street and inviting strangers to sing or play. Welcome to the first episode of TMI with Laura! For the first show, I sat down with my longtime friend and industry pro, Dan O'Neil (or as some call him, Borga or Danny). We went way back—think 2009—reminiscing about when we first crossed paths and how the music industry has changed over the years. Dan has done it all: he's been a guitar tech and production manager for some of the biggest names out there, from Orianthi to Janet Jackson, and most recently, Bon Jovi.
We got into what it really means to be a guitar tech versus a "roadie," and Dan broke down what goes on behind the scenes—from making sure guitars are stage-ready and squeaky clean (plus the all-important towel and water service!) to the gnarly logistics and relentless schedules that come with being a production manager. You'll hear hilarious road stories, get a peek at what it's like to manage a sprawling tour crew, and find out what makes touring with legacy artists both challenging and rewarding.
We also talked about how COVID shook up the touring world, the organizations stepping up to help crew members, and the huge shift in attitudes among the road crew—the balance between paying your dues and creating a healthy work environment. I know I promised you an interview with Willa and Wes, but after being on the road for 3 straight weeks, it just didn't come together yet. Fear not though, it's still in the works! This past week has been a flurry of activity to get my family out of our house and into my in-law's while our floors are refinished after the great flood of episode 5. Listen to what happened when I decided to walk over to the piano and hit record. You'll hear the true wanderings of this songwriter along with an old tune called "Woke Up Today" that I wrote while I was a freshman opera student at DePaul University. Life is not always smooth sailing for creators, especially when anxiety and depression hits at unexpected times. Last week flew by in a blur of responsibilities but Laura was able to play a show and meet new people while doing what she loves. Today's episode finds her in her hotel room at The Palmer House Hotel in Chicago where she did her best to avoid errant room noises and capture a quick update.
The song featured in today's episode is I Dreamed a Dream, recorded in 2003 at Laura's home in Nashville. She recorded this for her dad on a CD of songs called "And Now, For Something Completely Different." Laura does not own the rights to this song but hopes you get a chuckle out of her attempt at musical theater.
Inspiration can and will strike anywhere. In this episode, Laura talks about how it showed up over the weekend when she sat down to noodle around on the piano. Hear how she grabbed on and rode the wave where it took her, and then hear how sometimes writing can become a self-fulfilling prophecy or an out of body experience.
