Join us for The Roar, a weekly podcast featuring conversations with the community of Sault College. You'll hear from students, staff, faculty and admin, on life as members of the Sault College community.
Episodes will vary each Sunday, starting with a Roar, and then followed by a Yip the following Sunday. Roars will be longer, 20-30 minute in-depth focused conversations with departments, program faculty and individuals from across the college community. Yips will be 10-15 minute quick episodes, featuring highlights of events coming up across the community, important deadlines and dates that students should be aware of, and "Ask Us Anything" segments, with both members of the Counseling team and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team. Helping to make college life just a little more accessible and less intimidating.
In this episode of The Roar Sault College podcast, we discuss the upcoming Orientation Day on August 30th. This special event is designed to help new students get acquainted with the campus, and prepare for the academic year ahead. We provide an overview of the day's activities, including campus tours, information sessions, and opportunities to connect with faculty and staff. Tune in to get all the details and tips on how to make the most of this important day as you begin your journey at Sault College!
One of our Success Coaches chats with three students about what are the essential things to do when you first arrive in Sault before your classes start. They also share experiences, tips and information on topics ranging from Cellphone providers and grocery shopping to uniforms and books. Tune in and start getting ready for classes and your new life in the Sault!

In this episode of The Roar we will be talking about the Cram Jam, an study event that mark the start of the Sault College spring semester final season. This event will take place on July 22nd, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm at Odeno.

Last week to celebrate International Woman's Day SCSU organized an event where people could recognize some of the amazing woman at Sault College. So one of our Success Coaches went around the College interviewing some of these wonderful woman and asking, "what does International Woman's Day means to you?" and "What would you say to your 19 year old self if you could know then, something you know now?". This week on The Roar, we interviewed William, a current Digital Film Production student, about his experience in the program and what he has taken from his time here at Sault College and applied to his own YouTube Channel.
William’s YouTube Channel (Willy Does Wrestling) is dedicated to Wrestling and recently got a deal with Rogers TV to air some of his videos and create exclusive content for them.

Marcelo is back (Success Strategies Assistant) and this time he and Larissa (Success Coach) talk about the key dates for the end of semester. Along with what is happening this coming week at the college and some fun community events to participate during December!
Our Success Coach Larissa met with four of our Peer Tutors, Alex, Daniel, Yogesh and Phani. Our tutors told us about their experiences, why they chose to become a tutor and why students should participate in Peer Tutoring.
Cram Jam was also one of the topics they chatted about, which for the 23 Fall semester is happening November 20th! Prizes, extra tutoring sessions, coffee and a fun study break are part of the plans!
Cram Jam starts at 6:30pm and ends at 9:30pm, with a fun Study Break at Enji from 7:30-8pm.

On June 22nd, attend an education table at the Common Link from 11am-1pm for Indigenous Student Union and Safe Partying. Learn about Indigenous cultures, traditions, and their contributions to society, while enjoying safe partying to care for yourself and others.

Esha and Darma came to chat with Larissa about what Summer looks like in the Sault.
They have lots of great tips about what to do, where to go and how to prepare if this is your first summer in Northern Ontario.

The Application to Graduate is now live on the Student Portal!
This important form lets us know if graduating students are intending to come to Convocation in June, allows you to update your information so we can mail your Diploma to the right address, if you are not attending the Convocation ceremonies and ensures that you'll have tickets for your families.
There is also a really important little check box on there that we want you to check, Tyler from Alumni stops be to explain why.
Also, April 1st was our Fall 2023 Open House! It was a great success despite the wintery weather, and if you are joining us for the first time today because you saw our banner up and decided to listen in, welcome! We are so excited to share our College community with you!

Wednesday January 25th, 2023, is Bell Let's Talk day; a national day of action dedicated to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting conversations and the sharing of experiences when struggling with mental health.
Sault College will be participating in this national conversation on January 25th with an event in the Link starting at 12pm. Kim and Alexxa from the Sault College Mental Health and Wellness Committee stopped by The Roar to talk about the event and the importance of keeping the conversation going beyond just one day.
We also hear from a number of students who stopped by the Student Services Fair on January 18th and let us know what mental health means to them.
The struggles of mental health can impact all of us at any stage during our lives and we want our students to know that Sault College is here to support you.

Today's episode is a repeat of a conversation that was aired during the fall semester, but the content of that conversation was so useful and important that we wanted to ensure that our new Sault College students had the opportunity to hear it.
We asked faculty from different programs across the College what students did in their programs that brought them consistent success during their time at Sault College; what they wished students would do during their studies; and what students can expect from them, when they ask for help.
We also asked two returning students what advice they would offer to new Sault College students just starting out.

We've had a lot of fun making The Roar over the Fall 2022 semester, and we thought that this first episode of 2023 would be a great way to welcome the new year; by looking back at the the mishaps and giggle fits as we pulled the first semester of The Roar together.

Finals are coming... Yes, that is a Game Of Thrones joke... but also a fact! And the Success Coaches decided to get together and have a quick chat about all the supports available to students during this stressful period of the semester.

Waroodahmad Al-mamoori the President of the local WUSC Committee stopped by The Roar recording office, to talk about WUSC and how students can get involved. And Rina Cuison our Success Strategies Assistant and volunteer for WUSC, explains what motivated her to get involved.

It's that time of the semester! Finals are coming...
Cram Jam is designed to be a fun, kickoff preparations for the end of the semester event, with extra Peer Tutoring sessions running later into the evening. You'll be able to win prizes just by coming to study on campus on Monday evening November 21st!
Departments from across the College have come together to support our students as they work towards those important final exams and handing in those big assignments. There is around $400 in prizes to be won, so make sure you listen in to learn how to get your name into the draw!
Laura from the Library, along with two of the Peer Tutors, Vince from SONE and Michael from Aviation, stop by to explain more about Cram Jam and why you should be attending peer tutoring this semester.

And while this episode may feel uncomfortable at times, and may make the listener uncomfortable; as Jonathan, one of our guests, mentions during the conversation, it is important that we get "comfortable with being uncomfortable". That we engage in these conversations to gain a better understanding of each other. We are many nations within one, with many cultures coming together under the umbrella of Canada, only through communication can we learn and grow successfully, together. Marie, either from else where in Canada or internationally, are you wondering how to reach the housing department for assistance with accommodations? Are you moving into residence and not sure what to expect for the start of the Fall semester? If the answer is yes, to any of these questions, look no further, this episode is for you! Welcome to The Roar! In our soft launch episode, we discuss the upcoming start of the semester and what students can expect from the middle of August, through to our main Orientation day, on Tuesday, September 6th, 2022. We hear from Tanya and Ray with Recruitment, about the advantages of coming to campus early to get set up with your student ID card, have a tour of campus, and much more. We'll also be hearing from MarieClaire with the International Student Services team, who will be sharing information about our International Student Pre-Orientation and Orientation line up on September 1st and 2nd, as well as her favorite memory of Sault College.
