Where do you see congregational brokenness in your local church? In your hometown? How might the church broaden and deepen the reality of table fellowship both inside and outside the church? In what ways can we heal divisions in American political culture and Adventist church culture? How might we make the communion experience in our church liturgy more meaningful?
What “sandcastles” can you find in your life that prevent you from focusing on Jesus? How can we as Christians be ready to serve others in all seasons? Are our churches and relationships safe havens for others? How can we increase the efficacy of that aspect of ministry?
What are the effects of Christians suffering from Spiritual Inattentional Blindness? Have you ever experienced it?How can we avoid personally and corporately embracing Spiritual Inattentional Blindness? How would you relate to the Pharisees and Sadducees in Jesus’ day? How would they relate to you?
How can we be sure that our commitment is to serving and being recognized by God, and not to being recognized for good behavior? How do these two ways of living look different? Share a time that God has rewarded your giving (emotional, financial, physical, etc.) in the past. How can we build our commitment to the cause of serving others?
Has there been a time when you’ve experienced pressing through death to new life on the other side? Is there a way you’re experiencing pressure now? How does Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane reflect His full embrace of His humanity? Of His divinity?
Jesus washed the feet of his disciples: How was this a gift? How can we model that gift in our lives? How can we recreate the beauty of the first foot washing in our own churches? What “outer garments” prevent full efficacy of our ministry, both corporately and personally?
How could Judas have spent so much time with Jesus and still betrayed Him? How can we avoid a similar path? How does the idea that “revelation is progressive” change how you view other people—both in and out of the Adventist denomination? Why are secret sins so dangerous to our relationship with Jesus? What steps must be taken to expose them? What boxes have we created for God? How does this limit Him? How does it limit us?
How can you be recognized as someone who has been with Jesus? What does the story of the two thieves teach us about the power of forgiveness? The two thieves both died as a result of their crucifixions. What differences did they experience as they faced death?How do we face our own sorrowful experiences? Looking back at your life, can you relate to both of their stories?
How can our own feelings of forsakenness lead to recognizing pain in others? Why did Jesus have to feel the pain of complete separation from his Father on the cross? What is one practical thing you could do in your community that would enable others to experience belonging?
How do you think Pilate felt when he was first confronted with Jesus? Do you think his perceptions changed as his interaction increased? How can we avoid following in Pilate’s footsteps when popular tides fight against what we know to be truth? How do you think Pilate’s story changed after his encounters with Jesus? What did the rest of his life look like?
Why should someone be an Adventist? Can Adventism give the world a greater view of Jesus through its theology, culture, eschatology and community? How does that work? Is there something that Adventists, as a whole, should focus on in order to show a greater commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord? How does legalism deny Jesus in almost every aspect of our lives? How does the Totalist nature of Adventism deny Christ and his expression in our churches?
How do you imagine the days of mystery during Jesus’ life were filled? With amazing miracles? Insightful sermons?Were most of Jesus’ days quite ordinary? Could Jesus have accomplished more if He had started his public ministry earlier in life? How does the life and ministry of Jesus impact the way we see His death and resurrection? If you knew you had one week to live, how would you spend your time? How would your schedule differ from how Jesus spent his last week?
When God is silent, how do you feel? What is your response? Have you had any unanswered prayers in the past where you now know that God’s way was superior to your desires? How can God’s silence lead to peace and joy in our lives? How can we minister to others who are experiencing a time of silence in their lives?
How can we keep the concept of Christ’s death for our sins as the main focus in Adventism? How does the fact that Christ died for your sins change how you view the world? The church? The people with whom you interact daily? How does Jesus’ death on the cross show the glory of God? How can we reflect that in our lives?
Share experiences in your life when you were overwhelmed with joy—followed by times of pain. If you could, would you go back in time to warn yourself of the hard times to come? Is there a time that God has shown his presence through your celebrations? Through your mourning? Why do you think Jesus values emotional honesty? Are there any examples in the Bible or in your life?
