In this episodes, we discuss why backtesting is important and why we still do it 10 years in the game. There are different backtesting methods and if you want to stay on point and in-sync, backtesting along with journaling is the way to go.
Reasons to backtest:
- Know your edge - results. Testing if the strategy has an edge.
- Gain confidence in your system
- Gain confidence back after string of losses/DD.
- Understanding risk and drawdowns within your system
- Antsy, really want to get in the market when there is no edge.
Stats to look for in backtesting:

3) Losses
4) Max drawdown
5) Average win/loss
6) reward/risk ratio
7) Average time in trade

This average return is based on data going back several decades. Therefore, if you invested this $1,000,000 into one big, diversified fund, you could see a net of $70,000-$90,000. For the next 60 days, commit to becoming the best version of yourself.
You must:
1) Read 5 pages of a trading book. (see book recommendation channel)
2) Journal or review a trade and document it. - (backtesting counts)
3) Workout once (at least 45min).
4) Drink 1 gallon of water a day.
5) Set aside money for a funding challenge (prop firm of your choice). On the last day after you have completed 1-4, sign up for a prop firm challenge. This channel will help encourage, guide, and keep each other accountable to trading the best way.

Signs of trading on tilt:
-
increasing your risk size above your initial tolerance.

a trade that has been adjusted multiple times (2-3).

always checking the position.

placing trades you wouldn't normally place (either different market conditions or pairs).

I don't care, I just need to win my money back.
-You don’t realize how deep of a hole that you’re digging for yourself. Analogy. Delusional focus. A sense of mania
- “Don’t move the SL after placing the trade” is in your plan, but you move it to let it “breath” > cognitive distance. Your behaviors contradict your beliefs. Letting emotions make the call even though you know your plan is profitable but you lack the discipline to trade.
Actions to take to avoid tilt:

Self evaluation

go over your current open trades and assess risk. Ask yourself, If all of these trades go against me today, would I be able to handle the loss without emotion? close positions that have you worried/revengeful. If you don’t close those positions, you will have a bigger risk of blowing up your account. *ask the question, if the person is really on tilt, nothing can change their mind.
You need a fire exit. Emergency plan. Have it in the back of your mind, but only use it when necessary. Tilt happens in the moment - Walk away from the computer. Change your environment, to change your thinking . Do an activity that gets your mind off the charts (physical exercise, games, socialization).
-When you get back to the charts, you will have the kneejerk reaction of guilt/ beating/facing the loss yourself for making mistakes.

Guilt > Acceptance..
In ALL traders careers will experience a degree of TILT. Is there a way to minimize it? How do i minute the amount of ties i slip into tilt. We offer many free resources, 1) get into conversation with it, own it, be honest with your self. Acknowledge to move on faster.
Like a roller coaster, you want the drop to happen as fast as possible. Get over the scariest part. Theres going to be a point where you put your hands up and just “enjoy the ride.”

Signs of forcing a trade:
- cycling through your products 3 times when you go over that, it;s a red flag that you are trying to force your plan to fit current market conditions.
- Hoping that a trade will workout.
- “I gotta get into this move”
- Not focused. Scattered. Mentally preoccupied with other tasks
Tips/Advice/to avoid forcing: How do I stop overtrading?
- REVIEW your plan - double check that the market is displaying your criteria for entry, not adjusting your criteria to current market conditions.
- TRUST in your plan that when the opportunity presents itself it will be effortless, and very obvious to you. (this is where know your plan is important)
- Take a step back from the markets. Let it be. It will be there when you return with a fresh and clear mind. Remember your routines of what to do so you can get back into the zone (discussed in last weeks topic tuesday)
- Accountability partner. (comunity - HTA!)
- Keep risk management in mind. Know when to play offense or defense. Lift off the gas when you have to protect your capital. Over time you will know what to press your bets.
- BECOME AWARE of your thoughts and actions when the market is in between revealing a entry signal for your plan.

Are you gambling or are you trading? When it feels good just to look at the charts, you may have an addiction, a trading/chart addiction.
Gambling - take risky action in the hope of a desired result.
Gamblers want it NOW
Traders know it will take time. (Delayed gratification).
Gambling addiction vs trading addiction
If you label yourself a trader...DELETE the word “GAMBLING” from your dictionary.
If you use this word, you are already skewing your strategy.
Gambling can be emotional decision making.
High risk over a short period of time. In hopes of high reward
Trading is minimizing risk over time while increasing your profits.
There are professionals in both fields and there are amateurs
Which role do you fit in? Amatuer gambler/ trader, professional?
Showing the difference between trader and gambler trader:
Traders is playing off of strategy while gambler is playing off of luck
How do you deal with losses? Blame the market/learn and move on
How do you deal with wins? Take the praise/learn and move on
Gambling - exciting
Trading - boring
Gambling stops at the table (pau go have a drink and celebrate or basking in your losses).
Trading continues after it’s closed (journaling/study/work).
Whatever we win, we will spend because it's “free money”.
Investing and gambling both involve risking capital in the hopes of making a profit.
- In both gambling and investing, a key principle is to minimize risk while maximizing reward.
- Gamblers have fewer ways to mitigate losses than investors do.
- Investors have more sources of relevant information than gamblers do.
- Over time, the odds will be in your favor as an investor and not in your favor as a gambler.

Journaling your trades will help you become the best trader you can be.
If you aren’t yet, or are afraid to, reflect on why.
What’s holding you back?
Confront your losses. Take ownership because the only way to grow is be acknowledging the flaws in your trading system.
Identifying the weak points in your trading system will aid your journey in losing less, making more, and provide a sense of security to your mental state.
Journaling is just a piece of the grand puzzle but it is a integral part of trading.
Your journal should contain at least 6 categories:
1) Pair/product
2) Direction
3) Date trade goes live
4) Entry level/price
5) Stop loss
6) Result in percent/pips/ticsk
Refine
Get better
Gain confidence
Repeat
Consistency doesn’t happen overnight, just think about how many hours athletes or doctors put into their line of work.

Positive Expectancy - What is Positive Expectancy?
Mark Douglas, famous trader states - “Remember our definition of a winning attitude: a positive expectation of your efforts with an acceptance that whatever results you get are a perfect reflection of your level of development and what you need to learn to do better.”
“Expectancy Definition: the state of thinking or hoping that something, especially something pleasant, will happen or be the case.“
Reid share’s his story about overcoming a multiple series of consecutive losses in a row and how having/knowing his plan’s “Positive Expectancy”, He was able to overcome the negative self-talk and back in profit.
Ways to increase expectancy: analyze your trading and small areas in which you can improve 1% on each trade. This could look like risk management, trade quality, trade quantity, following your plan, just a few points to name and get stats from.

Track your progress.
set goals like: Win 1 more, Lose a little less.

Bad habits:
-Revenge trading: A trader runs into revenge aka “trading on tilt”-from poker. Trying to Recapture your losses from that particular market. y
Who has gambled before? Ever lose money? What goes through your mind after losing? Do you let your emotions get the best of you?
It is responsible for traders losing tons of money.
You convince yourself that the setup is still there.
You create your own mini reality to see what you want to see.
Almost trading blind. Ignoring the facts and price and what the market is telling you.
How do you mitigate revenge trading?
Create boundaries/rules for you to abide by during the trading day. Almost like an emergency plan. Escape route. Refer to prop fund account, daily loss limit before full liquidation.
-You will learn more about yourself as you experience this
-Step away from your trading desk. Go out and exercise, do a hobby, have fun and separate yourself from the trading world to refill your mental capital.
-Do something creative
-It’s just money
You can counter revenge trading by focusing on remaining calm, focus on your trading plan and have discipline to carry out your rules.
- tame the emotions
-Pause and take a few to review what happened. Is that loss apart of your trading probability? Or was it an emotional decision?
-Go back to your setup. Was it a valid entry?
