In this special episode, part of Dying Matters Week, we sit down with Joanna and Joy, two end-of-life facilitators at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT).
Together, they share their insights, experiences, and expert advice on how to navigate the difficult conversations surrounding death with care and understanding.
Joanna and Joy explore the importance of initiating open dialogues about end-of-life planning, addressing the emotional challenges faced by families, and providing guidance to those supporting loved ones through the final stages of life.

To mark Healthcare Science Week, meet Amanda, Julie and Caroline from the Neurophysiology department at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

Excitement is growing within South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust ahead of the opening of the new Eye Hospital in Sunderland. Tina Morrell is our Programme Manager for the new Eye Hospital in Sunderland's city centre.
She discusses why there is a need to replace the current Eye Infirmary and what's involved in such a huge project.

In the final episode of our three-part series about the Staff Network Groups here at the Trust, we talk to Junior Sister Vasily George from the Renal Satellite Unit at Durham Treatment Centre.
Vasily is involved with the Workforce Race Equality Staff Network (WREN). She talks about how the group is a confidential, safe space for staff to share experiences, provide advice and support, raise concerns and identify solutions.
Vasily also discusses what the Mary Seacole Leadership Programme is and how this has helped her develop. At the beginning of the episode, we're joined by Senior Inclusion Advisor Jake Higgin as he explains why the network changed its name.
On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we continue to talk to our Staff Network Groups.
We met up with Organisational & Leadership Practitioner Jill Duncan who chairs the Positive Health Group. This is for staff at the Trust living with long-term physical or mental health conditions.
Jill talks about her own long-term physical condition as she suffers from rheumatoid arthritis.
She discusses how the Positive Health Group helped her and how it has benefitted several staff working at the Trust.

To help raise awareness of this we are highlighting our Staff Network Groups in a three-part series on Our People Podcast.
To kick start this on this week's episode we met up with Thrive Clinical Team Lead Dr Sarah Markham and Assistant Psychologist Rachel Baines.
Rachel is part of the LGBT+ Staff Network and discusses how the group is a safe space for staff to share their experiences and receive support.
Sarah and Rachel are also part of the Thrive team which is a service that offers emotional and mental health support for all STSFT staff.
On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we joined Sunderland Eye Infirmary Clinical Lead and Consultant Ophthalmologist Ajay Kotagiri.
Our Eye Infirmary is one of the leading providers of eye health care services in the UK and is a centre of excellence.
Ajay discusses the types of services we provide our patients and how we aim to provide a first-class service to people who have eye emergencies.
He also talks about how staff have been involved with the planning of the new Eye Hospital and how that will benefit our patients.
On Friday 29th September it's World Heart Day.
World Heart Day is a reminder for everyone to take care of their hearts as cardiovascular disease continues to be the world’s number one killer.
To discuss this for the 50th episode of Our People Podcast we joined Consultant Cardiologist Mickey Jachuck and Senior Chief Physiologist in Cardiology Joanna Spence.
They talk about the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest, the importance of learning how to do CPR and lifestyle changes that could help prevent any future heart problems.
Mickey also speaks about taking part in this year's Great North Run and his memories of being one of the four NHS official starters for the half marathon in 2021.

To discuss the mental aspect of sexual health we joined Psychosexual Therapist Elaine Conway.
Elaine talks about the sort of issues her patients deal with and the services she provides in order to help them. She also highlights the importance of sex education.
September is National Vascular Disease Awareness Month.
To discuss this on Our People Podcast we joined Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner Gemma Davison and Consultant Dr Adriano Sala Tenna.
Gemma and Adriano talk about the most common diseases the vascular department deals with and how the new Investigation and Intervention Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital will benefit our patients and staff.
On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we joined Elder Life Specialist Practitioner Claire Boylan and Nurse Consultant for Older Persons Chris Cairns.
Claire and Chris talk about how the Alexandra Centre aims to act as a centre of excellence and how the team help our over 65 year old patients with delirium and dementia.

Our digital theatres have recently had a major overhaul to give operating theatre teams the best technology at their fingertips.

On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we joined Safeguarding Children Nurse Advisor Michelle Milburn and Patient Experience Facilitator Alison McNally.
In 2017, the Trust set up the Young Persons' Group which aims to make a difference to children and young people accessing hospital and health services.
Michelle and Alison are key figures in running the group and discuss how they make sure the voices of children and young people are heard throughout the Trust.
We were also joined by members of the group as they talk about how it benefits them and what they enjoy most about volunteering.

On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we joined Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Safe Care Lead Kay Brown as well as Consultant Nimantha De-Alwis.
Kay and Nimantha talk about what diabetes is, how someone can be tested for it and what health problems it can cause.
They also discuss how diabetes can be treated, how it can be prevented and why it is important for our staff to be educated on the condition.

We joined Infant Feeding Lead for Midwifery, Stacey McFarlane, Community Nursery Nurse, Cheryl Rutherford and mam Angel Puttock.
Angel talks about her first-hand experience of breastfeeding whilst Stacey and Cheryl list all the benefits that come with it.
They also discuss this year's Breastival which has been put on during the week to support and celebrate breastfeeding as part of everyday life.
The team also talk about the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative and how this will help increase breastfeeding rates.
In the final episode of Season Two we spoke to Head of Neurophysiology and Senior Chief Clinical Physiologist Debra Young.
Debra talks about what Neurophysiology is, how the department have kept the patient waiting lists down and the development of our Advanced Physiologist.
In April we hosted our Staff Recognition Awards and Debra also discusses how proud she was to win the Governors' Award.
On this week's episode we are joined by Extended Scope Practitioners Jill Clark and Catherine Johnson.
Jill and Catherine work at Sunderland Integrated Musculoskeletal Service (SIMS) which offers specialist assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of joint, bone and muscle conditions to patients.
Recently the service has launched a self-help tool called Move with Me, which is an online resource available to patients to allow them to start treatment as soon as possible.
We are one of 14 Trusts to be involved in the Shared Governance: Collective Leadership Programme which is sponsored by the Chief Nursing Officer for England, Ruth May.
The programme aims to promote excellence in practice and shared decision making across our nursing teams and is the only accredited programme of its kind in the world.
On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we were joined by Assistant Director of Nursing and Lead for the Pathway to Excellence Sharon McDowell and Operating Department Practitioner Jason Deegan.
Jason has recently setup a shared decision making council as part of the Pathway to Excellence and he and Sharon talk about how it is benefitting our staff and patients.
On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we were joined by Wendy Hadlington and Sheila Scott who work at Healthwatch Sunderland and Healthwatch South Tyneside.
The pair talk about the work that is going on at our hospitals and around the community to help improve our services and ensure we give our patients the best treatment possible.

On Friday 28th April the Trust celebrated it's first Staff Recognition Awards.
The event was hosted at the Beacon of Light and was dedicated to the healthcare heroes that work at our Trust to thank them for their service to the NHS.

This episode marks National Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Day.
The aim of the day is to raise the profile of cancer clinical nurse specialists at a time when patients and the cancer workforce need them more than ever.
To help do this on Our People Podcast we were joined by Cancer Lead Nurse Kelly Craggs, Community Staff Nurse Michaela Fleury and Out of Hours Palliative Care Team member Alison Bruce.
They also discuss the STSFT Cancer Internship Programme which helps enable registered nurses to develop more specialist knowledge, skill and experience through working directly with our cancer teams.

Our maternity team has lots of experience in what they do and will be there for you throughout your pregnancy.
Lorna and Sarah discuss how the team supports new mums through services such as Birth Reflection and Talking Therapies.
They also talk about where's best to go to access these services.
Patients who suffer trauma as a result of pregnancy or giving birth can now get support from a new Maternal Mental Health Service here at STSFT.
To talk about this service on this episode of Our People Podcast we were joined by Lead Midwife for Maternal Mental Health, Lorna Middlemass and Clinical Psychologist, Lyndsey Hall.
The pair discuss how the service has many different support avenues for pregnant people and their families.
Lorna and Lyndsey also talk about how the service meets the needs of the NHS Long Term Plan which sets out the ambition to establish Maternal Mental Health Services in all areas of England by 2023/24.

AI is a big buzz term in health and tech in the news at the moment - but we were well ahead of the trend with our own lifesaving studies.
Our Trust is leading a research trial using Artificial Intelligence to spot what could become cancer during endoscopy checks on our patients.
We, alongside eight other Trusts across the country, have taken part in COLO-DETECT, which helps flag up polyps which might have otherwise been missed by the naked eye.

We met with our Executive Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development Kath Griffin and Equality Diversity and Inclusion Lead Phillipa Poole to discuss the day.
This episode looks at our Menopause Pledge, which was marked one year ago today, and what we’re doing to help those facing period poverty.
It also talks on how we’re helping all our colleagues learn more about how they can support each other through the menopause, what help is on hand to help our colleagues keep well and support available to help families.
This year’s theme is #EmbraceEquity and we chat about how we’re helping all our colleagues across our Trust support each other to learn more about the menopause and more.
In this week's episode we spoke to Workstream Lead for the Path to Excellence, Claire Skaife. In March 2020, Claire was 34 weeks pregnant when she contracted COVID-19. She was treated by her colleagues at Sunderland Royal Hospital as they saved her and her baby's life.
Here she talks about her experience and how the Northern Neonatal Network helped her through this time. Claire discusses how that led to her becoming a member of the Parent Advisory Group as well as a Professional Nurse Advocate. This sees her act as a voice for parent experiences, driving positive change for the future.

Claire was the first Neonatal Care Coordinator in post in the UK. She discusses why there was a need for such a team and how it came about. Claire also talks about what the Northern Neonatal Network is and how it helps our patients.

In October STSFT hosted a conference all about Nursing and Midwifery Excellence.
Nursing and Midwifery Excellence is the Trust's way of delivering the American Nursing Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Pathway to Excellence programme. The programme aims to promote excellence in practice and shared decision making across our nursing teams and is the only accredited programme of its kind in the world.

On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we met up with Clinical Lead for Sunderland Integrated Musculoskeletal Service (SIMS) and Sports and Exercise Medicine Consultant, Dr Glen Rae and Physiotherapist Nia Woodhouse. We talked about what SIMS is and how it helps our patients as well as the launch of their new self-help tool Move With Me.
The NHS Staff Survey is underway and this year we are also using it as part one of our STSFT Team Talk tools. It will help us improve how we listen and communicate with each other. The national survey gives our staff the opportunity to share their views about working for the Trust and NHS.
To talk about this important survey, we were joined by Organisational & Leadership Development Advisor, Angela Dodds. She discusses how it helps us understand what our staff think we do well as an employer as well as highlight the things we need to improve.
During our Talk Money Week here at the Trust, staff from Serve & Protect Credit Union joined us as they shared their tips on how to become financially resilient. Business Development Manager, Rob Lovesey and Marketing Manager, Chris Kerrigan also provided us with insight on what Serve & Protect Credit Union can do for our staff and how you can help look after your money during the cost-of-living crisis.
In the UK, October marks the beginning of Black History Month. In this episode we are joined vice chair and non-executive director, Ngozi Lyn Cole and Lead Chaplain, Reverend Remi Omole. We find out what Black History Month is and why we celebrate it.
During October thousands of people are attempting to quit smoking. On this episode of Our People Podcast we are joined by Elaine Jackson and Josie Onwuliri from our newly launched Tobacco Dependance Treatment Service as well as Occupational Health & Wellbeing Specialist Jodie Kendall. Elaine and Josie discuss what the new service does for any patients wanting to quit smoking whilst Jodie talks through the services that are available to our staff.
On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we met up with Specialist Bereavement Lead Midwife, Charlotte Mutton and Patient and Staff Experience Midwife, Joanna Wylie. We talked about our new bereavement service, Forever Cherished, and what it offers those that have suffered from the loss of a baby.
Throughout October and November, we're holding our big health and wellbeing team talk. As a Trust, we place a really high value on the wellbeing of our staff as well as our patients. Earlier this year we launched our workforce health and wellbeing hub, and we want to continue to share information and support our staff as best we can. To kick this off we spoke to Health Literacy Officer, Lorna Dawson and Population Health Lead, Fiona Carney to discuss what the Trust is doing for health literacy month and why it is so important.
In this episode, we speak to Age Concern Tyneside South's Chief Officer Grahame Cassidy about what the service offers the residents of South Tyneside.

On this week's episode of Our People Podcast we spoke to Sharon Quinn from Age UK Sunderland. We talked about how Age UK support people in our local communities, what support is available to older people and how you can access it.
In this episode, we meet Data Analyst Ruth Hall and Deputy Data Assurance Manager Vicky Carr, who work in our Performance and Information Services department. They explain how the teams ensure our information is recorded correctly and it can be used to drive our organisation forward.

On today's episode we talked to Antenatal Services Manager, Amanda Bargh and Caroline Turner from Down’s Syndrome North East. In March Down’s Syndrome North East donated new care boxes to Sunderland Royal Hospital’s maternity unit. The care boxes were aimed at supporting new mums who have given birth to babies with Down’s Syndrome and their families.
