Daily introvert: Recent Episodes

Kevin Zoeteman

At Daily introvert we discuss all things introversion related. Every day we dive into specific topics from books on introversion, dissect introversion related quotes and/or quotes by introverts, take a closer look at the research that has been done about introversion, and we look at many of the articles that have been written about introversion. Everything that's covered is aimed at providing information, insight, and to get you to both look at and question the topics for yourself so you can gain more understanding, awareness, and insight into everything introversion.

There is a common misconception that only extroverts take to the stage. That you have to be extroverted to be able to be on stage. Yet many introverts shine on stage and sometimes feel more comfortable on stage than off.

Today we explore the stage and why some introverts feel so comfortable with it.

Today we take a closer look at why introverts often apologize for their introversion and the impact is can have.

In today's episode we take a look at the positive side of extroversion and the benefits of loving extroverts.

In different periods of our life we form different relationships. Highschool is one such periods during which we form important relationships/friendships. These are essential in forming us for years to come. Introverts often end up with fewer friends but those friendships are often deep.

Today we take a closer look at relationships introverts form during highschool.

Friendships are an incredibly valuable thing and an important relationship. Many introverts take time to choose their friends and take time to build those relationships. Introverts often have fewer friends and prefer to spend time 1-on-1 or in small groups of friends but that is not all that can be said about an introvert's view on friendship.

Today we dive deeper into the second episode of this relationships series where we look at friendships.

How we deal with relationships varies from person to person though people who are more introverted have a tendency to see relationships differently from those who are more extroverted.

Today we dive into the first of a 5 part series on relationships. Today we take a closer look at the relationships with family members.

We are all hard on ourselves sometimes but introverts can often be hard on themselves simply for being introverted and that can lead to a downwards spiral. It can be hard to get out of especially when you get regular messages from people around you that the way you are is not right.

Today we're diving deeper into the concept of self-reproach and how detrimental this can be for introverts.

Work is often a place where conflicts arise (whether small or large). How we deal with these depends on a lot of factors and our temperament (more introverted or more extroverted) plays a role in that as well.

In today's episode we dive a bit deeper into issues at work and how introverts experience these and deal with it.

When it comes to work there are always parts that we enjoy and part that are simply things that need to get done. How we look at both of these parts is of course personal but there is also a difference between how many introverts look at this distinction compared to how many extroverts look at it.

In today's episode we take a closer look at the concepts of natural work and imposed work and how this differs for introverts.

Parties are a wonderful yet for many introverts it is something they dread. The average party is often not something an introvert is looking forward to. Not because introverts are not social but because most of the time parties don't give an introvert what they need.

Today we're taking a closer look at parties and why introverts often see it very differently.

Having conversations with other people seems like an easy and fun thing yet for many introverts that is not necessarily the case. It's not that introverts don't like talking to people, it's that the people they talk with as well as the subject they talk about plays a major role is whether or not there is even a desire for a conversation.

In today's episode we explore the topic of conversations from the perspective of someone who is more introverted.

As we grow older, the way in which we connect with other people often changes. As does the time it takes to form strong connections. For people who are more introverted, however, the way to connect with people is often different and takes longer. Regardless of age.

In this episode we dive deeper into this.

anonymity is something many introverts enjoy. To be alone in a foreign city. To just observe and roam around. To be a flaneur. To many people this sounds alien, something they would never enjoy doing. Yet for many introverts the idea of anonymity is very appealing. To be a flaneur is very appealing.

Today we're diving deeper into this concept and why it appeals so strongly to many introverts.

Time is of course the same for everyone, yet people who are more introverted often look at time slightly differently than those who are more extroverted. That different perception of time can make a serious difference is the value people place on it and how they choose to spend it.

In this episode we dive a bit deeper into the concept of time and how introverts see this.

Introvertia...not a real thing obviously but for introverts something that is a bit of a utopia. A version of the world that would be ideal for those who are more introverted. In that sense, unique for every introvert and as such, a concept worth exploring.

Western society in general might seem to be more in favor of more extroverted behavior but that is definitely not the same in every country. There are countries and cultures around the world that are a lot more prone and accommodating to introversion.

Today we are exploring one of those cultures and dive into how it differs from what is commonly seen as the pro extroverted Western society.

The pursuit of happiness is a very common thing. Especially in Western society it is romanticized and for obvious reasons. Happiness is something we all strive for. Yet many introverts view happiness very differently and it's that different view as well as the different approach towards it that makes a distinct difference.

In today's episode we dive deeper into the concept of happiness and how this is viewed from an introverted perspective.

Behaving introverted is often less normal for introverted than you might think. The pressure put on introverts (both by society and often by introverts themselves) to behave more extroverted often prevents them from acting and behaving naturally introverted in a comfortable way.

Today we are diving a bit deeper into this.

Western society has the assumption that the majority of people are extroverted. On top of that, because extroversion is so prominent in Western society, it is often seen as the "right" way of behaving and doing things. As we know by now, that's not at all the case yet it is a persistent assumption that has build up over time and is hard to shake. Especially because we seem to want to enforce this assumption, this belief that extroversion is the desired way of being.

In today's episode we dive deeper into this assumption and how it can impact those who are more introverted.

In Western society we are often so focused on behaving in a more extroverted way that it seems like extroversion is a lot more common than introversion. When we put such a premium on being social, being outgoing, and thinking on your feet it is no surprise that other, more introverted, behavior is pushed to the back and seen less often. Seeing mostly extroverted behavior, it is easy to believe that introverts are the minority but that's far from reality. Introversion is just as common as extroversion.

In today's episode we dive deeper into the split between introverts and extroverts. And as the title of the episode gives away, introversion is by no means a minority.

Of course we are all different and we all have our own quantity of introversion we are comfortable with. We are all out unique selves as well so placing people in a specific box is never a 100% fit. That said, there are two broad groups of introverts that have their own specific set of characteristics and many introverts recognize both yet feel they belong more to one of these.

Both groups have their pros and cons in terms of behavior and how it impacts them, both growing up and later in life.

In today's episode we dive deeper into the two groups that are known as "shadow dwellers" and "socially accessible introverts". We explore what is meant by these terms and what type of people belong to which group.

To many the word "solitude" has an extreme ring to it yet for those who are more introverted it often sounds far less extreme. Often it is something that they regularly crave. Solitude also goes far beyond simply being alone and that deeper level is exactly what makes it so valuable and important for introverts.

Today we're diving deeper into this concept and explore why it's so important for introverts, what we actually mean by it, and how it's a lot less strange than you might expect yet at the same time often questioned by society.

There are as many ways to raise children as there are parents though in today's society, where being outgoing and social are emphasized, it can be challenging for introverted children to feel like they cannot be themselves. They might even feel like they need to be different to live up to the more extroverted ideal when it comes to behaving.

For parents to know about introversion, especially is they have a more introverted child, can make all the difference in building confidence and self-esteem for a child when growing up.

In today's society the majority of the focus is on the external world. Our internal world now mostly resides in the realm of everything spiritual. Yet it is only in the last few hundred years that it's seen this way. Ever since the berth of our species, our internal world has played a significant role in life. And it just happens to be the case that many introverts thrive in that internal world. For many introverts our internal world is our source of inspiration, creativity, and joy. Society (Western in particular) is moving more and more towards focusing on the external in terms of recognition, status, fame and both financial and material wealth. There is of course nothing wrong with these things in and off themselves but with the increased focus on these, the internal world has taken a back seat and is often considered second rate and less valuable.

In today's episode we explore our inner world, how important this is for introverts, and how society at large benefits from introverts staying true to themselves and embracing the internal.

For a long time, introversion was considered as an indicator to mental illness. Even today there are still those in the professional field who question whether or not introversion should be considered as such. The mere fact that professionals are still considering that introversion needs to be seen as an indicator to mental illness is shocking to say the least.

In this episode I dive deeper into the whole idea of seeing introversion as a diagnosis and, most importantly, how this shouldn't be the case at all.

Being alone is these days often considered an odd thing. Especial in Western society, when you are on your own people are often confused. They wonder if you have any friends, if you are doing okay, and why you would possibly want to spend time on your own. There are plenty of people to hang out with after all. Yet for introverts that alone time is precious and even required to recharge. The misconception of what it means to be alone and to spend time on your own has created an image that shines negatively on introverts (to say the least).

In this episode we delve deeper into the importance of time alone for introverts and how this is mistakenly perceived by society as something that is a bad thing.

In today's episode we're starting off with the first book we'll be diving into for the next month or so. Laurie Helgoe's Introvert Power is considered an incredibly insightful book by many who have read it. This makes it worth exploring the topics and concepts covered in the book so see how relevant they still are today (almost 10 years later) and where cultural difference come into play (considering that the book has been written from an American perspective).

This episode is an introduction to the book to give you an idea of what we'll be covering in the time to come.

For many introverts, the way they see themselves is significantly different from the way they view introversion and the "concept" of an introvert. For many this happens on a subconscious level. The image that has slowly been created over time of what constitutes an introvert is often far from positive and many introverts fall into the trap of adopting this more negative image of introversion. As a result, many introverts are not comfortable with their own introversion.

In this episode we dive deeper into some examples from Laurie Helgoe's Introvert Power as well as an example of how this still happens in today's society.

Being social is incredibly important, especially in today's society. Or at least, that's what we're led to believe. And even though everyone has their idea on how social they want to be and how important it is to them, essentially everyone agrees to the belief that social interaction is an important and necessary part of life. For introverts this is no different and the perception that introverts are often considered unsocial and/or not wanting to interact with other people has contributed to the more negative image of introverts. Yet there is much that goes on underneath the surface when it comes to the social interaction of introverts as well as the lack thereof. Having more insight into what drives introverts to, or away from, being social and interacting with others can have a significant impact on how introversion and introverts are perceived. Both by others as well as by themselves.

Today's episode is all about taking a closer look at what constitutes as "being social" for introverts and shining the light on some of the common misconceptions regarding this topic.
