Do you use the same simple English grammar all the time? Maybe you avoid using certain grammar because you're not sure how to use it. You've learnt the rules, but you don't know how to apply them.

This keeps you in a 'grammar comfort zone', where you're stuck with basic English. When you get out of this zone, you'll be able to speak with more precision, fluency - and sophistication.

In this episode, I share some examples of the grammar you may be avoiding, and five steps to help you move out of your comfort zone to use a greater range.

I also give an example of how a student used one of the most difficult English conditionals completely naturally and effectively!

‘Netflix is not your teacher!’

I hear this comment a lot, but is it true? Can Netflix help you learn English?

In this episode, I talk about three times when Netflix is a great choice. But rather than just watching or listening passively, choose an activity that will really improve your English. Get my suggestions for three types of learning activities you can do with Netflix.

Vocabulary in this episode

come down to (phrasal verb) = when something is the most important factor
"It all comes down to your goals."

lifelong learner = when you learn throughout your life
"As an lifelong Italian learner ..."

So if you love the idea of watching your favourite TV show, or finding out more about the world through documentaries, Netflix should be high on your list. When you combine it with any one of the three activities I suggest, it will also be a fantastic English learning tool as well!

They aren't just for speaking, either. You'll see them everywhere: in articles, news stories - and on the sides of UK buses!

In this episode, I talk about the reasons why you should (and shouldn't) learn English idioms. I hope you agree with my conclusion!

Learning English can be very "up and down". When it goes well, you feel confident and motivated, but sometimes it's hard to see your progress. Other times, something doesn't go well, and you lose confidence.

At times like this, it really helps to have an 'achievement diary'.

In this episode, I share why an achievement diary helps you see progress in your English, and how it can help you go even further with your English. I also show you how to create a simple achievement diary so that you can start straightaway, and ideas for what to include in your diary.

If working in an international company is your ambition, this episode is for you!

An essential part of getting a high-paid role (with the career development opportunities you want) is the job interview. The good news is that you don't have to memorise "perfect answers" to hundreds of possible interview questions.

In fact, there are only a few types of interview questions that you'll need to answer - and when you have a 'structure' for answering them, it becomes much, much easier! You can use these 'structures' time and time again to 'ace' your interview!

In the episode, I also share details of my new (short) speaking program that helps you answer English interview questions confidently and convincingly. Join before December 10th for a special 'early bird' price!

If you want to feel fluent when you speak English, the quickest way is to use 'fluency phrases' - the 'blocks' of English that help you to build sentences almost without thinking.

Two types of fluency phrases we've looked at are collocations and signalling phrases. (See links below.)

But the third type is 'fixed phrases' - phrases that you don't need to add anything else to. They're complete, automatic phrases which help you sound natural when you speak.

In this episode, find out
- three different types of fixed phrases, and
- how to learn them

You might also find that you already know and use a lot of them!

What do the phrases "I'd like to ...". "You wouldn't .... would you?" and "Can I just say..?" have in common?

Answer: They're all examples of 'signalling' phrases that we can use to show the other person what we're going to say.

Signalling phrases are a type of 'fluency phrase' (a block of language) that helps us speak more easily and automatically. In this podcast episode, find out:

  • the three types of fluency phrase
  • four reasons why they help you speak more fluently
  • how to learn them

We're often better at one area of a language than another. So maybe your speaking skills are better than your writing, or your grammar knowledge is better than your listening ability.

But when one area of English is less strong than another, it makes sense to focus on that area. One reason is that it gives you a great opportunity to see progress - which is motivating! (It's often harder to see progress at advanced levels.)
