Jan. 28, 2024 ~ Barbara Lambert is a co-founder of Confidante, Inc., a San Francisco Bay Area human resources consulting company that specializes in creating workplace harmony and preventing and managing disruptive workplace behavior. She has a doctorate in Human Behavior/ Psychology and a master’s degree in counseling psychology. She spent seven years as the National Director of Training, Education and Consultation at U.S. Behavioral Health and fifteen years consulting to Wegmans Food Markets’ Executive team, Human Resources and Asset Protection Divisions. Dr. Lambert also discusses her new book "from trauma to healing: Seeking Solace and Safe Places to Fall."
Jan. 21, 2024 ~ Henry Liebling and Ruth Ann Forrester co-authored the book "My Heart is Healing, Power of the Mind." The book is the story of Henry’s successful cardiac recovery and how he achieved well-being by using “Power of the Mind” techniques to build new habits and enjoy low sodium eating. Over time, he increased his ability and motivation to take on more responsibility for his recovery and well-being. Up until that point, his wife (caregiver) “did it all.” The book is written in the style of friends having a talk, which allows them to communicate their agreements and different points of view.
Jan. 14, 2024 ~ David Lawrence joined Executive Wealth Management in 2023 as a Private Wealth Advisor. He works in community outreach and is a big proponent of teaching young people about financial literacy. He is driven to discover each client’s unique needs to help build a tailored plan to achieve their financial goals. David started his career at UBS Financial Services in 2013, where he built the foundation necessary to deliver a comprehensive experience to his clients. David is also a proud ambassador for the Livonia Chamber of Commerce.
Jan. 7, 2024 ~ Michael Pfau joins the show to talk about his 20 years of experience as a life, leadership, and career coach, delivering transformational coaching to business and individual clients. Pfau founded Crossways Life Coaching, LLC in 2002, which focused on helping individuals discern the next steps in their professional career. He was also instrumental in supporting the launch of the Professional Christian Coaching Institute in 2010 through curriculum development and he currently serves on the faculty.
Dec. 31, 2023 ~ Business partners Ed Bahoura and Natalie Yasso have been awarded 13 Sylvan Learning territories in the greater Detroit area. Sylvan Learning is the leading provider of supplemental and enrichment education for K–12 students, with more than 710 locations worldwide. The new territories will be located across the Detroit metro area, with resale territories located in Dearborn, Livonia, and West Bloomfield.
Dec. 24, 2023 ~ Bill Wild is the president and CEO of the Midwest Independent Retailers Association (MIRA) and the MIR Foundation. MIRA is a trade association that represents thousands of independent retailers in midwest states, including Michigan and Ohio. Bill is wrapping up his first year as the new president after leaving his position as Mayor of Westland. The MIR Foundation is also raising funds to continue its annual college scholarship program and Turkey Drive. In 2023, they gave out 35 scholarships, 3,500 turkeys, and other food items to help local families in need.
Dec. 17, 2023 ~ Amy Joy Hess, a research writer, author, and chemist from Wallace, Idaho, joins the shows to discuss writing about Pastor Tim Remington. The pastor was shot six times on March 6, 2016 by a man who thought he was stopping an alien from Mars. Hess recounts his miraculous survival story, his ultimate return to his church, and the people whose lives he impacted in her new book, "Gun Shot Witness: The Tim Remington Story."
Dec. 10, 2023 ~ On this special episode of "It's Your Community, Santa Claus (Douglas Bargerstock) joined the show to talk about his life as Santa! Santa detailed all of his favorite things about the holiday season and Christmas. Some favorites discussed include his favorite present he ever received, his favorite part of Christmas, his favorite Christmas cookie, his favorite way to bring in the New Year, and his favorite Christmas story.
Dec. 3, 2023 ~ Emily O'Hara, senior manager of guest experience design at the Detroit Zoo, talks about the 11th annual Wild Lights event and some new and enhanced family favorite holiday experiences this year. She highlights attractions, such as the art exhibition and 4D movie showing, plus how Wild Lights supports the Detroit Zoological Society, the nonprofit that operates the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center.
Nov. 26, 2023 ~ Detroit Chief of Police Ike McKinnon traces the path of his life from a black fourteen-year-old male beaten without reason or provocation by two white police officers, to his thirty-year service as an officer himself, to his eventual rise to the highest position in the police department. He holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Michigan State University, a master’s in criminal justice from Mercy College of Detroit, and served in the United States Airforce from 1961 to 1965. McKinnon was recently inducted into the Michigan Military and Veterans Hall of Honor.
Nov. 12, 2023 ~ United Community Family Services/Chaldean American Ladies of Charity (UCFS/CALC) President and CEO Kristin Olmedo joins the show to talk about the organization's holiday programs to help local families in need. UCFS/CALC services more than 10,000 people annually in metro Detroit, expecting 600 families on Nov. 17 alone to pick up staple food items for Thanksgiving. The organization has seen a 167% increase in families in need since 2021. The organization is also looking ahead to Christmas, encouraging professional women to help other women in need through its Women Business Institute program to donate items for children including car seats, strollers, baby wipes, diapers, and books.
Nov. 5, 2023 ~ Kris Kelso is a keynote speaker, entrepreneur, and the author of “Overcoming The Impostor: Silence Your Inner Critic and Lead with Confidence“. He joins the show to talk about what prompted him to write the book, why he doesn’t like the phrase "Fake it till you make it," and how much the fear of failure plays a role in the Imposter Syndrome.
Oct. 29, 2023 ~ Dan West, president and CEO of the Livonia-Westland Chamber of Commerce, joins the show to talk about how the cities of Livonia and Westland combined their chamber of commerces in October. Representing more than 1,200 members, will serve the collective business community of the neighboring cities to produce more networking events, advocacy, and programs to support local businesses and organizations.
Oct. 22, 2023 ~ Dr. Tara Kane, Dean of the School of Business at Madonna University, joins the show to talk about Madonna University, the Business department, and academic and athletic scholarships available. She joined the full-time faculty at Madonna after she retired from the West Bloomfield Police Department as a Detective/Sergeant in Investigation. Dr. Tara Kane describes the unique programs offered, such as specific sports management training in the school of business partnering with the Lions, Tigers, and other groups so students can get hands-on training.
Oct. 15, 2023 ~ Matthew L. Cole, Ph.D. and Interim Dean in the College of Business and Information Technology at Lawrence Technological University, joins the show to talk about how small business owners are big employers in Michigan. Business schools like LTU are educating future business owners and business professionals, and have a lot of new opportunities.
Oct. 9, 2023 ~ Brandon Lewis, director of the Macomb County Department of Emergency Management and Communications, joins the show to recap the recent Navigating Your Bussiness After An Emergency event. The event had a panel discussion focusing on the next steps for emergencies, contingency plans, and standard policies.

In his best-seller "We Don’t Want YOU, Uncle Sam: Examining the Military Recruiting Crisis with Generation Z," Weiss tackles the source of the problem and proposes solutions. Broken down further into 21 key points, he explores the meaning behind work, the digital age, modern healthcare, gender-based disparity, preparing for the future, and much more.
Sept. 24, 2023 ~ Livonia resident and award-winning architect Ben Tiseo will become the 100th president of the Second Indianhead Division Association, a national organization with more than 1,500 members that served with the U.S. Army’s Second Infantry Division. He will serve as president from 2023 to 2025. Tiseo served with the Second Infantry Division in South Korea from November 1966 to December 1967. He was assigned to Headquarters Battery, which stationed him for a 13-month tour near the North and South Korea Demilitarized Zone.
Sept. 10, 2023 ~ Brian Galdes, who has a master's degree in education administration from Wayne State University and had a 30-year career in education, joins the show to discuss Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Brian continues to serve students in Wayne County through his leadership of the Suicide Prevention Coalition, which comprises school districts and hospitals battling adolescent depression, suicide, and the stigma associated with mental health.

Aug. 27, 2023 ~ Chuck Dardas and Veronica Cruz from AlphaUSA join the show to discuss the second annual Tour de Livonia. Both cycling enthusiasts and families are invited to get on board for the event on Sept. 17 at Bicentennial Park in Livonia. This event offers riders two options: an 18-mile course starting at 9 a.m., or the 7-mile family route starting at 9:30 a.m. Both routes traverse through parks, neighborhoods, and Livonia landmarks.
Aug. 20, 2023 ~ Bob Carris, past president of the Livonia AM Rotary Club, and Emily Davis, member of Rotary Interact Club, join the show to talk about the sixth annual Touch-A-Truck Event in Livonia. It is a hands-on, family event that lets children and adults alike explore vehicles used in industries like public service, emergency, utility, construction, landscaping, transportation, and delivery. All proceeds support local organizations, such as Livonia Police and Fire, and the LPS Education Foundation.
Aug. 13 ~ Dan West, president and CEO of the Livonia Chamber of Commerce, talks about the 10th Annual West Wayne Banquet being held on Sept. 25 at The Henry in Dearborn. The featured speaker is Lomas Brown, 2020 College Football Hall of Fame, former NFL All-Pro offensive lineman, and a Super Bowl XXXVII Champion. West also discusses other upcoming Livonia Chamber events and the art of networking and the importance of collaborations.
Aug. 6, 2023 ~ Juli Halper is the co-founder of Garrett’s Space, an Ann Arbor-based suicide prevention non-profit. The group is hosting its fourth Go4GarrettsSpace fundraiser from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2023 in the Morris Lawrence Building on Washtenaw Community College's campus. It will raise funds to support Garrett’s Space wellness programs and establish a holistically-focused residential center for young adults ages 18-28 struggling with depression and anxiety. The fundraiser will host musical performances, presentations, speeches from those touched by suicide, yoga, fitness, and meditation.
July 30, 2023 ~ John Mansour lost two of his three children, Alexander, 11, and Gabrielle, 6, in a boating accident 10 years ago. Eleven-year-old Adriana survived the accident, suffering severe brain trauma, and was in critical condition for months. She is currently progressing and able to attend school.
The family took comfort from many, but it was the church, several priests, and seminarians that never missed a day to console the Mansours. The family set up the foundation in memory of their children, and has scheduled three events benefiting the Chaldean Seminarian Fund. You can find out more at www.alexandgabby.com.
July 23, 2023 ~ Rick Culleton is hardly the kind of person you would expect to fly an airplane. He is fearful of heights and lacks a good sense of orientation. None of this, however, prevented him from earning a pilot’s license. Anxiety, ADHD and people labeling him a lost cause did not stop him from becoming highly successful as an entrepreneur either. In his candid debut book, "Messed Up Like You," the author sometimes shares hair-raising experiences from his personal life, business ventures, and mental health journey.
July 16, 2023 ~ Teresa Tomeo is the founder of T's Italy as a travel coach and consultant, which supplies advice on how to travel the country. She is also an author of more than 10 books, hosts a syndicated Catholic talk show host, and is a motivational speaker. She has more than 30 years of experience in TV, radio, and newspapers. Tomeo joins the show to talk about travels and pilgrimages to Italy, and her new book "Everything's Coming up Rosie," a reflection on her life from the perspective of her Italian mother.
July 8, 2023 ~ Lost Voices Executive Director Mike Ball joins the show to talk about his group of professional folk and blues musicians, who use the power of songwriting to bring hope and healing to kids who have experienced severe emotional trauma due to abuse, neglect, violence, addiction, and human trafficking. The group has reached over 2,500 young people to help them find a healthy place for themselves in the world.
July 2, 2023 ~ Elizabeth Arbaugh, curator of mammals at the Detroit Zoo, joins the show to talk about two recent animal births: a baby chimpanzee and a baby giraffe. A sea otter named Finn, miniature donkeys Rain and Pearl, and red ruffed lemurs Iray (ee-ray) and Telo (Tee-low) also recently joined the zoo's lineup.
June 25, 2023 ~ CEO of Life Remodeled Chris Lambert Chris originally pursued a degree in marketing at Indiana University with the hope of attending law school and launching a career as a real estate developer. A spiritual awakening during his junior year led to a passion to follow Jesus, and Chris eventually followed a call to Fuller and Gordon-Conwell seminaries, where he earned his MDiv and doctorate in preaching. Moving to Liberia in 2007, he and his wife helped a village raise the necessary resources for a well, farm animals, and a new school building. Upon returning to the U.S., Chris founded a church called Ekklesia, in 2010 he started Life Remodeled, where he and his dream team built and launched Next Level Nonprofit. Life Remodeled operates the Durfee Innovation Society, a community hub located in a former school building that has become the center of neighborhood life in an area of Detroit’s West Side. Chris, the entrepreneurial and visionary founder of successful, growth-oriented nonprofit Life Remodeled now adds published author to his list of accomplishments with the release of Next Level Nonprofit, a how-to guide for organizations that want to operate more effectively toward bigger goals. Lambert designed the book as a how-to guide for founders and leaders looking for proven strategies.

June 4, 2023 ~ Matt McCormick is a business coach and consultant from New Boston, Michigan. He has more than 30 years of experience helping entrepreneurs and small businesses procure and manage resources and personnel. McCormick has been working with the Vocational Villages in the Michigan Corrections System and has helped place several returning citizens with manufacturing and other companies all across the state.
Doyle Glass was born in Midland, Texas an is an author, historian, and sculptor dedicated to honoring those who fought in war. After earning degrees in history and law, he worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Texas and served as Assistant Attorney General in Kentucky. In 2000, Glass turned to the arts to tell stories of his childhood heroes. He sculpted a bronze statue of John Squires, who saved others during WWII and received the Medal of Honor, with the statue standing in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

May 14, 2023 ~ Brigadier General Carol Ann Fausone joins the show to discuss her career as a medical officer. She graduated from the University of Michigan School of Nursing in 1975, and then received her commission in the United States Air Force as a medical officer in 1977. She established The Veteran Advocate, LLC, which is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business that assists veterans with health care, housing, and education challenges. The University of Michigan School of Nursing invited Fausone as the keynote speaker for its 2023 Spring Commencement ceremony.

April 30, 2023 ~ Melanie Duquesnel is the president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which serves Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. For more than 100 years, the BBB has helped people find businesses, brands, and charities they can trust. In April, the BBB shared several consumer tips and warnings such as bait-and-switch scams targeting Detroit Metro Area Facebook groups.
April 16, 2023 ~ Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) put all of our kids at risk, regardless of race, health, or socioeconomic background. MPHI Center for Strategic Health Partnerships Senior Research Scientist Kelsey Sala-Hamrick, and Community Action Assistant Director Kristen De Long discuss some of the causal experiences for ACE, including divorce, parental incarceration, abuse, and neglect, and the ways in which community organizations can help kids through to recovery.

February 5, 2023 ~ Vanessa interviews Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, who recently delivered his 10th annual State of the County address where he highlighted Community Partnerships, economic growth, and future projects. He discussed several key community metrics, including educational attainment, financial stability, infrastructure, roads, housing, country population, collaboration, and the county goals for 2023, as well as some of the challenges. The county executive also talked about the $100 million that the governor of Michigan put on the table for Selfridge National Airforce Base, which is in Macomb County.
January 22, 2023 ~ Vanessa Interviewed Laura Bonnell with the Bonnell Foundation. Imagine losing three of your four children to cystic fibrosis. It happened to a family in Egypt. Nada Mohamed is the only living child in her family. Her brother Omar died before his first birthday of CF, because the genetic disease was not being tested for, or even recognized in Egypt. Laura is working diligently to educate families in Egypt about CF. She is the mother of two adult daughters with CF.
January 15, 2022 ~ Vanessa interviewed Chris Jankulovski, Founder and CEO of Remote Staff, a recruiting company specializing in remote working placements. Remarkably, he was able to build and grow this thriving business while battling cancer, failing kidneys and several brain operations.Throughout these challenges and more, Chris was able to find a way to transform his life from one of fear, struggle and self-doubt, to one of empowerment, success, health and happiness. He authored the book Near Death Lessons. At 19 years old Chris was diagnosed with Von Hippel Lindau (VHL) Syndrome and for a time allowed this diagnosis to get the better of him. However, a series of near-death experiences triggered a profound positive personal transformation which eventually led Chris to live the life of his dreams. The lessons from those transformations are shared and passed on to others so they can also use the worst adversities as a catalyst for profound change.
January 8, 2022 ~ Vanessa interviewed Michael Kelley, author of The Lost Theory and The Devil's Calling, fell in love with literature and creative writing while at the University of Pennsylvania. He put this passion to the side during a lengthy career on Wall Street, where he worked as a lawyer, built an international business, and founded his own investment management firm. After leaving the financial world, he engaged in studies of quantum physics, Eastern mysticism, and philosophy. From these studies, he developed a "Theory of Everything" which became the basis of his novels. After years of life in New York City, Michael now lives in the peaceful woods of Dutchess County with his wife and daughter. There, he enjoys meditation, yoga, wine, reading, and hiking, all of which inspire his writing.
December 25, 2022 ~ Vanessa interviewed Fr. Joseph Marquis about St. Nicholas, the real Santa Claus. Fr. Joseph Marquis is a Catholic priest (Byzantine Rite) serving as pastor of Sacred Heart Byzantine Catholic Church, Livonia, MI. For ten years, he served as Director of Pastoral Care at Detroit's Holy Cross Hospital, until its closure in the fall of 2003. Prior to that, Fr. Joseph was a resident chaplain for one year at Children's Hospital of Michigan (Detroit, MI), where he received a year of clinical pastoral formation within a pediatric setting. Accompanied by his puppet, "Terry the Dinosaur," Marquis drew upon his skills as a ventriloquist to entertain children being prepared for surgery. December 4, 2022 ~ Vanessa interviewed Westland Mayor William R. Wild. Westland Mayor Bill Wild shared events in Westland and some news to share. After being the longest sitting Mayor in Westland, he is leaving the position for an executive as Chief Executive Officer of Midwest Independent Retailers Association (MIRA). Mayor Wild shared his experience in government and as a small business owner and his new role with MIRA. He talked about the successes he has had as Mayor and advice he has for others in public service. November 27, 2022 ~ Vanessa interviewed Dr. Teresa Holtrop who is a native of Michigan. She completed medical school at Michigan State University, and her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of MI in Detroit. She is Board certified in pediatrics. They talked about how United Way for Southeastern Michigan continues to connect families in our region to reliable information and helpful resources. These “What’s the Word Wednesday” town halls are part of a series addressing vital topics. Partnering with experts from government, education and nonprofits, these 30-minute interactive conversations address timely issues for everyone.Dr. Teresa Holtrop, pediatrician and co-founder of the Wayne Children’s Healthcare Access Program joined United Way to talk about LENA Start, a school readiness program in Metro Detroit. LENA Start is an evidence-based community program designed to engage families and help them learn how to increase conversation with their children during the first few years of life. This program is used in several organizations providing early childhood education, including Wayne Metro CAA, Black Family Development and Brilliant Detroit. After completing a 4 year National Health Service Corp commitment at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Detroit she worked for 24 years as faculty at the Children’s Hospital of MI General Pediatric Clinic, founding and running the CATCH Pediatric Mobile Team for 16 of those years. As a member of the MI Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, she has trained numerous practices in how to effectively screen children for developmental delays, autism, and mental health issues. She is currently the executive and medical director of Kids’ Health Connections, a non-profit organization that seeks to help medical practices serving Medicaid-enrolled children to improve the quality of the care they provide. She served as the Assistant Adjutant General of Veterans Affairs for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs of the State of Michigan advocating for Veterans from 2003-2011. General Fausone served as the Assistant for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs from 2001-2005 working directly with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Force Health Protection, and Readiness. Serving in this capacity, she assisted in developing and implementing programs, policies, and operations for Reserve Affairs. The interviewed focused on Veterans Day on November 11 and ways to honor veterans.

September 25, 2022 ~ Vanessa interviewed Jotham Stein, author of the award-winning book Negotiate Like a CEO: How to Get Ahead with Lessons Learned from Top Entrepreneurs and Executives, was interviewed by Ida Crawford on the Just Minding My Business podcast. During the interview Stein commented how the saddest, and most tragic, cases he faces are when family members, college buddies or childhood friends steal a company out from under a co-founder or major stakeholder. He said it’s more common than one might think and never easy to deal with. Which then took him back to telling the audience to protect one’s investments and equity stakes with iron clad contracts, making sure to seek out third-party advisers who can spot the trap doors and loopholes in the complex legalistic language. In a new effort to promote Livonia as an inclusive business community, the Livonia Chamber of Commerce will begin distributing “(We) Welcome Everybody” stickers for local businesses to display on their office and store doors.
August 21, 2022 ~ Vanessa interviewed Laura Bonnell. Laura is a former news reporter at WJR and freelance writer for many local papers and magazines. Laura started her Foundation in 2010 and three years ago decided to work full time on The Bonnell Foundation: Living with cystic fibrosis. The Bonnell Foundation helps cystic fibrosis families with lung transplant grants, financial assistance and college scholarships. Laura is also a full time advocate which includes trying to get Michigan lawmakers to make the Rare Disease Advisory Council law. This would give a voice to the 1 million people with rare diseases in Michigan. Bonnell is also pushing to raise awareness about people of color who are underdiagnosed in the U.S. and people in the Middle East who just recently discovered CF existed. The average life expectancy for a person with CF in the U.S. today is 53 years old. In Egypt it's 8 years old.
August 14, 2022 ~ Vanessa interviewed Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. A national survey - conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety - reveals many Americans admit to taking one or more potentially impairing medications before getting behind the wheel. AAA’s study focused on commonly used medications such as antihistamines, cough medicines, antidepressants, prescription pain medicines, muscle relaxants, sleep aids, and amphetamines. These are identified as potentially driver impairing (PDI) medications. PDIs put drivers at risk by causing nausea, sleepiness, blurred vision, slowed reaction time, and attention problems. While the side effects can vary by individual, these medications have the ability to reduce a person’s ability to drive safely. Throughout the course of a 30-day period, about half of Americans reported using a potentially driver impairing medication.

As employers continue to wrestle with a range of issues and considerations related to continued remote and/or hybrid workplaces, Playworks’ Corporate Recess initiative aims to foster connection, social interaction and mutual respect while building colleague rapport, teamwork, and trust. Sessions, featuring games and other activities, are interactive and customizable and are available both digitally and socially distanced in-person for groups of any size. In 2021, Playworks held pilot initiatives with the Skillman Foundation and with Detroit information technology company, Integral. The success of those ventures, as well as expressed interest from additional companies, motivated the organization to develop the program further and make it available on a wider scale in this region and in varied formats.
