Sports Backers is a nonprofit active living organization based in Richmond, Virginia. Our mission is to get people moving and this podcast will focus on keeping people active and moving, mostly through the lens of running. We put on outdoor endurance events, host training teams year round, and have programs aimed at bringing fitness opportunities to all corners of our area. All this brings us in contact with stories and ideas that are interesting and inspiring, and we’ll share them on this podcast.

This April marked Jon Lugbill's last Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k at the helm of Sports Backers. Our guest on this episode of the On the Move podcast is Tiffany Copeland, Director of the Fitness Warriors program for Sports Backers. Tiffany gives us a detailed overview of the Fitness Warriors, the innovative program that is addressing health disparities through active living in communities throughout central Virginia. The program has become a national model for creating fitness opportunities, and Tiffany shared more details on a recent trip to take part in a White House conference on building healthy and active communities.

This episode of 'On The Move' focuses on creating accessible adventure opportunities for people of all abilities and features a live recording of a recent panel discussion on that topic. The panel took place on May 18 and kicked off Dominion Energy Riverrock. A screening of the film ‘Adventure is for Everyone,’ took place before the panel, and was mentioned several times during the discussion. If you haven’t seen that film, which was produced by Beyond Boundaries, you should definitely check it out. Beyond Boundaries is a non-profit based in Richmond, specializing in guiding participants with disabilities, veterans, at risk youth, and recovery programs on outdoor adventures The panel was led by Shep Roeper, a co-founder of Beyond Boundaries, and also featured Sally Wetzler, a river advocate, outdoor enthusiast, community volunteer and James River Outdoor Coalition board member, as well as Josh Sloan, the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator at Sportable and an outdoor adventure adaptive athlete. Shep, Sally, and Josh shared plenty of insight and first-hand experience on the topic of accessible adventure and it was a great conversation. Our guest on today’s special bonus (meaning: very short) episode is Gene Dykes. The self-described ‘Ultrageezer’ has set multiple official and unofficial age group world records in a variety of running distances and continues to go after big goals and accomplishments. The 73-year-old from outside Philadelphia visited Richmond in November for the Richmond Marathon, and we caught up with him for a few minutes on November 12, before the marathon at the pre-race expo. He was gracious enough to join for a quick interview to share more insight on his accomplishments and experiences and it was great to speak with him. Gene ended up finishing the Richmond Marathon with a time of 3:20:40, which was good for first place in his age group. It also helped him move into 2nd place in the World Marathon Majors rankings for the age 70-74 category. And we’ll continue to look for more incredible accomplishments from Gene in the future. Lisa Bentley competed as a professional triathlete for 20 years, is an 11-time Ironman champion, a finisher of multiple marathons, and an accomplished motivational speaker, author, television broadcaster, and coach. And she competed at the highest levels of her sport despite a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 20. Kevin Tobin is an owner, camp director, and youth programs coordinator for Peak Experiences climbing gym and Passages Adventure Camp in Richmond, Virginia. He also coordinates the Bouldering competition for the Dominion Energy Riverrock festival each year, which attracts some of the top climbing athletes to compete, including Nathaniel Coleman, Kyra Condie, and Brooke Raboteau, three of the members of Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics. In addition to the athletes representing the U.S., Garrett Gregor is the lead route setter for the Olympic event and he's held the same role in the past at Riverrock. So Kevin is a great source for knowledge on all things related to climbing. Phillip Deane's connections with Sports Backers and active living started in 2005, when he was recognized as one of the overall winners in the Richmond Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Awards program as a senior at Varina High School in Henrico County. He went on to play baseball at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, graduating with a degree in economics in 2009. He continued to stay active after his college athletics career ended, taking part in a number of road running events over the next decade. His life was changed during a medical emergency near the finish line of the Richmond Half Marathon in November 2018, and thanks to the quick actions of the event medical team and doctors at VCU Health, he received lifesaving care. It was a very scary situation for Phillip and his family, and he spoke about the challenges of his recovery and his commitment to staying active. Phillip reached out to a few of us at Sports Backers in the fall of 2020 to with a few updates about his active living journey and to share his appreciation for the role that Sports Backers has played in his life. It was very impactful to read and we wanted to follow up with him to learn more. The result of that discussion is this episode, which has been several months in the making.
