We are two sisters - Yovany and Nancy - born in New Jersey to huge Puerto Rican families with strong ties to the island. We are here to share how our roots influenced our lives, in ways big and small, amazing and frustrating. Connect with us! We want to have fun, enlightening and real conversations around our cultures. This episode continues with the UN push north toward the 38th Parallel during Operations Rugged and Dauntless. We explain Line Kansas, Line Utah, Line Wyoming, Route 33, and the Iron Triangle. We cover the arrival of more than 1,000 replacement troops from Puerto Rico, friendly fire incidents and tank battles.
We also tell the unbelievable true story of Sergeant First Class Modesto Cartagena de Jesús, the Borinqueneer nicknamed “One Man Army,” whose actions on Hill 206 earned him the Distinguished Service Cross and made him one of the most decorated Hispanic soldiers of the Korean War. The episode closes as Chinese forces launch the massive Spring Offensive of April 1951.

In this episode, we continue the heroic story of the 65th during the Korean War. Covering March 1951, we follow their key role in Operation Ripper as they helped retake Seoul and push north of the Han River. We then dive into Operation Courageous, the intense fighting around Uijongbu, the failed attempt to trap Chinese forces with the 187th Airborne, and their advance to the Imjin River. Plus, we highlight several outstanding Borinqueneers who earned Silver Stars and a Distinguished Service Cross for their extraordinary bravery under fire.

Today's episode feels a little selfish, because I wanted to record my parents and share a little bit of their story, in their own words.
First up is mom, with her signature mix of wisdom and wonderfully random stories.
Then, the heart of the episode: a longer, more emotional conversation with my dad, who turns 80 this year. He opens up about moving from Puerto Rico to the United States, the moment he met my mom (yes, he teared up retelling it), and the simple yet profound advice he's gathered for building a strong marriage and a long, happy life (¡it includes parrandas!).
This show celebrates famous Boricuas and big moments, but it's also about honoring the quiet, courageous lives of everyday Puerto Ricans. My parents are humble and grateful, and I wish to preserve their voices for our family and for anyone who needs a reminder of what's possible through resilience and love.

The Borinqueneers were a kickass, all-Hispanic, mostly Puerto Rican, unit of the US Army. These servicemen and women served honorably and with distinction during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.
Part Two covers the operations in Europe during World War II, including one soldier’s account of fighting the Germans in the Maritime Alps during the holidays (roast porcupine, anyone?). Despite having to also battle racism, these brave soldiers made invaluable contributions that helped the Allies win the war.

Who would murder a 72-year-old woman who spent half her life donating generously to the less fortunate? Our quest to learn about the unsolved murder of the beloved Isabel Oppenheimer - owner of a legendary brothel called Elizabeth's Dancing Club - led to the history of prostitution in Puerto Rico and the shady underworld in which Isabel made a fortune.

Desconcertante. Misterioso. Incomprendido. ¿Es brujería, adivinación o simplemente otra religión? Tienen santos, ofrendas y rituales.

Félix Millán played 2nd base for the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets in the 1960s and 1970s. He was an outstanding, well-rounded athlete who put up amazing numbers both offensively and defensively. He was also a class act: a humble, quiet, hard worker who rarely missed a game.
Lifelong Mets fans Nancy and Chris discuss the Puerto Rican legend's life and career. El Gatito is Chris' all-time favorite Met because he famously choked up on the bat, just like he did as a little kid. Nancy recognizes his humble origins, faith and perseverance from her own family's history.
We were very excited to research and record this, and we hope you enjoy it.

Kokobalé is a unique Puerto Rican martial art that blends bomba music with stick-fighting and machete fencing, rooted in African and Taino traditions. Originating from enslaved Africans who adapted their warrior dances into bomba, it became both a form of self-defense and a means of cultural resistance against oppression. Though Kokobalé nearly disappeared in the 20th century, dedicated Puerto Ricans are reviving and preserving it, using social media to share its history and practice. Happy Holidays! BoricuameRican is on a brief break, but Nancy wanted to share a Christmas-themed episode she recently recorded with her husband Chris on their other show, The Pinto Podcast. We cover Puerto Rican holiday traditions, trivia, those dreaded “Would You Rather" questions, and ponder the burning question: Where did our favorite Christmas specials go?
Now go make yourself comfortable with a glass of eggnog or coquito and enjoy!

On December 24, 2008, Bruce Jeffrey Pardo showed up at his ex-in-laws’ home dressed up as Santa Claus and unleashed a reign of terror upon an entire innocent family. What drove him to plan such violence? What happened that night? And how are the survivors doing today? We attempt to piece it all together in this episode (which does not involve Puerto Ricans, but does involve our brothers and sisters from a loving Mexican family). Warning: descriptions of violence.

Like most people on Earth, Boricuas enjoy their adult libations. Among others, there’s the ubiquitous Medalla Light beer, but the island also boasts a number of high-end craft breweries to suit any taste! The central region’s climate is also conducive to growing grapes, leading to wine and sangria production as well.

Trigger warning: This episode contains gory details that may not be suitable for some listeners.
George C. Adorno began his criminal activities at the tender age of four. His youth was spent in and out of an overburdened juvenile court in New York City, until he was incarcerated for three decades for the murder of two individuals in 1974.
Ángel Nieves Díaz, nicknamed the Grim Reaper, was the first Puerto Rican to endure a botched state execution. As humans, do we feel bad, or did he get what he deserved?

Mystifying. Mysterious. Misunderstood. Is it witchcraft, fortune-telling, or just another religion? They have saints, offerings, and rituals. But there’s no temple, no bible, no Sabbath to observe. And what about possession, or animal sacrifice? trigger warning
Growing up Catholic, we were taught to steer clear of Santería. Finally we did a little research.
Santería’s history is complex, created from blending two religions - one African, one European. It is practiced differently from country to country, community to community, and house to house. To this day it continues to morph and has even been attracting new followers.
In a short time, we have done our best to learn from reputable sources to shed some light and open some minds.
Desconcertante. Misterioso. Incomprendido. ¿Es brujería, adivinación o simplemente otra religión? Tienen santos, ofrendas y rituales.

We’ve never NOT known who he was.
Somehow, 38 years was enough for him to become a Hall of Fame baseball legend, social activist, philanthropist, loving husband, devoted father, military vet, hero.
Somehow, 38 years was enough for him to capture hearts that weren’t even born.
Somehow, 38 years was enough for him to become a sacred part of Puerto Rican-American-Baseball history and culture forever.
We are proud to share the story of Roberto Clemente, who was taken from us too soon, and whose life continues to inspire half a century after his death.

The story of Ariel Castro, The Monster of Cleveland, hits home. Even before he abducted and tortured Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus in the early 2000s, he treated the mother of his children - our beautiful late cousin Grimilda - horrifically throughout their entire relationship. This is the first in a multi-part series that was difficult but important for us to research and discuss. Our love and respect to the families affected.

Close-knit and well-meaning, our families living in the US did their best to uphold Puerto Rican values, traditions, and customs. Sometimes those clashed with what the younger, US-born generation wanted.
With lightheartedness and maybe a chip or two on our shoulder (lol!), we go down memory lane.

They called him La Bestia.
His favorite word was “vengeance.”
Serving jail time for allegedly stealing hens, Antonio Correa Cotto vows to get revenge on everyone involved in the case. He begins to carry out his promise, ending the lives of two and wounding four others until he is arrested and sentenced to life in prison. Less than a year into his sentence, he breaks out of prison in a huge riot suspected to be part of a Nationalist plot to take control of the island. During his year and a half as a fugitive, he would continue on his murder spree until the law catches up with him in a sugar cane field. Now who gets revenge?

In 1968, 25-year-old Francisco Antonio Garcia Lopez butchered his mistress in a jealous rage. He escaped from prison two years later. This began a collective terror that gripped Puerto Rico for nearly 30 years.
Today, we dive into the story of Toño Bicicleta, a poor farmer (jibaro), and one of Puerto Rico's most notorious murderers. His life and criminal career were convoluted, full of prison escapes and horrible crimes that in some cases he didn't even commit. His short life still provokes heated discussions about misogyny, machismo culture, mental health, crime, corruption, and colonialism.

Many Puerto Ricans feel a connection to their ancestors, the Tainos. And the more we learn, the more they steal our hearts. Here, we chat about the day to day lives of this Native American tribe that lived in Puerto Rico when it was called Borinquen. You’ll even hear what their music probably sounded like!
Special thanks to Santos for composing “Mi Encanto Nuevo” for the intro and outro! Check out his music here:

Also - correction - farm worker program referred to was NOT called "Operation Bootstrap." That was different, and will be discussed in a later show. Nancy regrets the error.
We are two sisters, Yovany and Nancy, who were born in New Jersey but raised VERY Puerto Rican. We're here to share the experiences, struggles, and absolute JOYS of growing up bicultural. All topics are up for discussion, from food to religion! We hope you'll check it out, and share YOUR stories too - whether your family is Boricua or anything else!
Bienvenidos a todos!
