Welcome back to The Fahdcast! I had the pleasure to sit down with Dr. Andrew Flynn, who has recently finished his PhD in Applied Mathematics at University College Cork (UCC) and is now a postdoctoral researcher at UCC. For his PhD, Andrew worked on several problems in the areas of machine learning/artificial intelligence (AI)/computational neuroscience all from the perspective of dynamical systems, which is his area of expertise in mathematics.
Today, Andrew has come on the podcast to talk about some of his main interests in these areas and his goals for the future, one of them being to write a book on how to confront the growing divergence between the ability and explainability of AI. Amid the current global conversation on AI, Andrew has made it his mission to raise awareness about the events which may unfold if we become increasingly reliant on AI without addressing the explainability elephant in the room.
What may surprise you about Andrew is that he is also, as he says, a 'small farmer' and milks a 'handy few' cows. Andrew says it's his connection to nature that helps to keep him grounded and gives him the perspective he feels is necessary to tackle one of the greatest issues of our time.
