One of the biggest stressors I hear women name who are struggling with emotional eating is parenting. If you’re a mother who desires to manage your own mental wellbeing so you can best parent your children, without passing on trauma or unconscious patterns to them, then this episode is for you. This conversation with somatic attachment therapist Shaina Rae dives into her process of supporting mothers through their own internal healing so you can thrive in parenthood. We discuss…

  • What somatic attachment therapy is and how it differs from traditional talk therapy.
  • The five alignments to practice when supporting your child with co-regulating their emotions effectively.
  • An overview of the parenting patterns that, once you understand, can transform how you approach parenting your child (and re-parenting your own inner child).
  • The importance of resting in being rather than always doing.

This episode is such an important conversation for all parents, especially if you’re constantly triggered by your child’s emotions. Through doing your own inner work, you can support yourself in having the emotional capacity and skills to support your child in processing their own big emotions.

About Shaina Rae:

Shaina Rae is a somatic attachment coach + therapist who believes in the healing power of embodiment. She has now dedicated her career to helping moms and aspiring moms break free from their mental health struggles and find balance within their mind, body, and soul so that they can release their triggers and thrive in the motherhood and parenting journey.

She specializes in using a combination of techniques from adult attachment repair (AARM), internal family systems (parts work), hypnosis, breathwork, and sound healing to assist her clients in creating a new sense of peace and well-being in their nervous systems so that they can feel confident in their abilities to raise a secure attached child that can thrive in this unpredictable world.

Awareness is the first step in changing your eating habits. It’s necessary to be able to distinguish between physical hunger and emotional hunger, and identify what it is your body and being truly needs to feel good. This requires getting out of your thinking mind and dropping into the body so you can listen to the wisdom of your body and learn how to interpret the information you discover through self-exploration. In this episode, I take you through a guided practice to support you in exercising your awareness muscle and becoming more in touch with the sensations, emotions and thoughts arising in the present moment. With this present-moment awareness, you will be better able to determine whether your body is truly hungry for food or actually craving something else such as an emotional release, sleep or stress relief.

One of the most common areas women struggle with that is directly connected to emotional eating is a lack of satisfying sexual intimacy and emotional connection with their partners. If you are craving more pleasure and connection with your partner but don’t know how to ask for what you desire, then you may turn to food as a default form of pleasure to fill the void. If you feel stuck and hopeless that your relationship can improve, then this is the episode for you. I talk with Shana James, author of the book Honest Sex and relationship coach to men, all about the male and female psyche in relationships, and how women can create the connection they desire with their partner, regardless of how closed off he may seem.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Common mistakes women make in trying to feel loved and connected to their partner, that may be pushing him away.
  • Becoming aware of how much you criticize your man into changing (there are better ways).
  • How to express your desires and overcome your fear of rejection.
  • The importance of honesty and vulnerability in connection, as a path to deepening intimacy.
  • Why do men shut down and pull away if they feel like they are failing as a partner?
  • Dismantling the myth that your husband will be more attracted to you if you lose weight.
  • What to do if you feel like you’re growing apart from your partner.

This is such a mind and heart-opening episode for anyone committed to creating a more fulfilling love life with your man (and yourself). Enjoy!

When your intention is to improve your nutrition and health, it can be tempting to turn to “clean eating” plans as the solution, but what most people don’t realize is that these restrictive diets can actually set you up for failure and lead to disordered eating patterns such as binging, food cravings and obsessing about food 24/7. Yikes! In this episode, I give some warnings about why a clean eating plan can be harmful and backfire, in the hopes that you can save yourself from the misery that can result.

I talk about

  • Why clean eating does not necessarily equal healthy living.
  • The misconception women have about what healthy looks like.
  • The importance of inclusion and quantity as principles for true healthy eating/living.
  • How many “health experts” may themselves be struggling with disordered eating behind closed doors.
  • What orthorexia is and how an obsession with eating clean can become a severe eating disorder.
  • The comparison trap — how what works for one person doesn’t mean it’s right for you.
  • How to begin to take your authority back from experts and listen to your body to help you determine what eating and foods are right and best for your own health (your body knows!).
  • Why doing the inner emotional work is necessary to make the eating improvements you desire.

I help people do the inner work for eating issues, using modalities such as tapping, but you may be wondering what that actually means and looks like in practice. It can be helpful to hear directly from someone who has done the “work” with me to understand what happens in a session and the benefits that result. That’s why I invited my dear friend and fellow healer Tanin Matin onto the podcast to share about her recent healing session with me where we worked on breaking her emotional attachment to highly craved foods and uncovered the underlying emotions driving her to eat for a feeling of connection and safety.

Tanin is a spiritual coach and leader of the Energetic Revolution who has a gift for speaking about trauma, energy and healing in a way that makes sense. Not only will you get a perspective into what a healing session with me looks like, but you’ll also learn from Tanin about how to witness your emotions without judgment, expand your consciousness, and cultivate a spiritual practice that can support you in feeling nourished on a soul level. This is one of my favorite episodes!

In this episode we discuss:

  • Tanin’s experience from our tapping and healing session together.
  • Examples of how your brain creates emotional attachments to foods that you most crave.
  • How a trauma or survival response can contribute to binging behaviors.
  • The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) that I use to help someone rewire their brain’s response to comfort foods.
  • How to develop emotional awareness and the capacity to effectively feel and process your emotions.
  • The value of developing a spiritual practice and connection to a greater power as part of your healing journey.

About Tanin Matin:

Tanin is a Spiritual Teacher, Trauma Healer, and Conscious Business Coach for influential leaders, artists, and healers. Tanin’s mission is to be a leading voice for Trauma-Informed Relating, Authentic Expression, and Spiritual Being. She educates on the science of spirituality, manifestation, and miracles and the psychology of energy and healing to support collective awakening and human optimization. Her work is rooted in trauma healing, somatic attachment repair, neuroscience, neuro-linguistic programming, integrative health, energetics, breathwork, and consciousness to bridge the “why behind the woo.”

Tanin created The Energetic Revolution, which is a 6-month Trauma-Informed Spiritual Healing Certification for those that want to become Trauma-Informed Spiritual Energy Healers & Leaders.

It’s essential to improve your mindset when you desire to improve your eating habits, because every thought you think and word you speak influences how you feel and behave. If you find your mind is consumed by thoughts about food and body, inner criticism, and a victim mentality that you’ll never get better, then this episode will inspire you to choose a more positive mental attitude to support you in making the habit changes you desire. Your mindset matters!

The 7 mindset shifts I cover are:

  • How to make positive meaning of your eating struggles.
  • Viewing your eating episodes not as a problem, but as a window into your healing.
  • From thinking your body is the enemy to viewing her as a friend.
  • Why you don’t have a willpower problem, but rather a coping problem.
  • Going from prohibition to permissioning your desired foods.
  • Stopping labeling foods as “good” or “bad.”
  • Learning to make choices from a place of “I love myself, therefore…”

I also provide you with some activities you can do on your own to help you make these mindset shifts. Enjoy!

When it comes to eating disorder treatment, there are many options, and it can be overwhelming to know where to go for the right support. I want to make this easier for you by sharing treatment options I believe to be the best out there. That’s why I invited Heather Russo, the Chief Clinical Officer at Alsana, on to the podcast to showcase their holistic approach to residential treatment for eating disorders. • The types of eating disorders Alsana treats, and whether you may be a good candidate.
  • Alsana’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • The movement and nutrition approaches that Alsana uses to encourage developing a healthier relationship with one’s body and all foods.
  • Addressing common misconceptions people have about residential treatment.

Focused Therapy (CFT) — a method proven effective in shame reduction and

trauma treatment. “Our clinical team’s primary area of focus in 2022 is the

These five behavioral patterns may unknowingly be keeping you stuck in your emotional eating cycle. It’s important to identify if you are stuck in these patterns and shift them, otherwise you may remain stuck in the pattern of using food to self-soothe. And we’re all about changing that!

The five patterns I cover are:

  1. The shame-blame game (and refusing to forgive yourself)
  2. Thinking over feeling (you can’t think your way out of a binge)
  3. Pushing through without pause (you’re not a machine that can run on unconscious autopilot)
  4. All work, no play (if food is your only source of “fun” then we’ve got a problem)
  5. Putting everyone before yourself (no wonder you don’t have energy left to make the changes you want)

In this episode I share what these five patterns are, how they directly affect your eating habits, and what to begin doing moving forward to improve these behavioral patterns in order to support improving your eating patterns (win-win!)

In this episode, the CEO of The Habyt, Zan Ruhl, and I talk all about macronutrients and how it can be a tool to support women in improving their relationship with food, eating and their body. Given the conflicting opinions about tracking macronutrients, I felt it was important to have an honest dialogue about its pros and cons so that you can make informed and empowered decisions as to whether or not it might be a practice that is supportive to you on your journey.

We discuss…

  • What the term “macro” means and how it differs from dieting
  • Zan’s personal journey with binging and weight loss
  • How restriction fuels binging, and why eating more calories and carbs is key
  • How you can learn to just eat some of your favorite foods (without willpower)
  • Why mental health is the most important factor in determining if macro counting could be a useful tool for you

About Zan Ruhl:

Zan Ruhl is the CEO and Coach at The Habyt, a high touch, habit based, macronutrient focused nutrition program for women. After years of weight gain and feeling like she was living in a body that was not her own, she decided it was time to regain her health and confidence back, intentionally. As she dove into her studies of what healthy living meant to her, she discovered the beauty and flexibility of living a macro-based lifestyle.

Through her personal journey, she knew it was her calling to help those with similar issues. While completing her masters, Zan worked at an eating disorder clinic, where she learned that the mental journey is oftentimes more important than the physical. The Habyt program is designed into four distinct sections that cover education, mindset makeover, habit building and sustainability.

Please note this episode does contain some explicit language, so you may not want to listen with children around. This episode is a continuation from Episode 29, where I dive deeper into explaining the 5 categories of emotional wounds that are directly influencing eating issues.

They are:

  • The breaking point
  • Repressed anger and the inner rebel
  • Shame and the false self
  • Body boundary violations and safety
  • The fear to shine too bright

Tune in to learn more about each category and whether it may be at play for you in terms of why you emotionally eat or can’t seem to control your eating behaviors. I share personal experiences and illuminate how these patterns often unknowingly form throughout one’s life as survival or protection mechanisms.

Emotional wounds are one of the key components of healing that I teach to women struggling with eating issues. These are the repressed emotional energies that accumulate in the body and contribute to internal discomfort that triggers urges to binge. Oftentimes, a binge episode occurs as a result of an emotional wound from the past getting triggered in the present, flooding you with intense emotional energy. This process can happen outside of conscious awareness, which is why you may be continuing to struggle with binging no matter how hard you try to stop — because until you feel and heal the emotional wounds underlying the binge behavior, the pattern will persist. In this episode I explain what an emotional wound is, how they are formed and what my unique process is to uncover and repair these wounds so they can be liberated from your body.

Self-love is ultimately the healing remedy for your eating and body issues. When you truly love yourself, as you are, you no longer tolerate harming yourself with the words you speak and the actions you take. Yet, you may find that this idea of “self-love” is just a concept that seems impossible, foreign or confusing to experience for yourself. That’s why I’m dedicating this entire episode to exploring a) the reasons it may be difficult to love yourself, and b) tangible activities you can do starting today to begin to cultivate genuine self-love. I share how you can connect with your inner child, use mirror work, speak affirmations, practice forgiveness and open yourself up to receive more love from others and yourself, because you deserve to give yourself the same love and care you give to others.

The book You Can Heal Your Life was my first introduction to the mind-body connection and how thoughts shape one's reality and contribute to disease. The author and grandmother of self-affirmations, Louise Hay, identifies the probable underlying mental and emotional causes that contribute to specific ailments. She claims, “Dis-ease can be healed, if we are willing to change the way we think and believe and act.” This applies to eating and body issues.

In today’s episode, I share her insight into which beliefs and emotions that are at the root of 1. Excessive appetite (aka overeating) 2. Bulimia 3. Feminine issues (which often go hand in hand with eating issues). I then provide the new thinking patterns that she suggests to use as daily self-affirmations, which you can add to your healing practices.

It will help you change your perspective about your body and how you can begin to discover yourself through embodiment practices.

In this episode we discuss…

  • Practice perspective changes to shift how you view your body and relate to it.
  • How slowing down, noticing the subtle sensations of the body and learning your unique body’s language can support you in truly knowing how to nourish yourself on all levels.
  • The value of addressing spirituality as part of your relationship with yourself, your body and with others.
  • Some simple embodiment practices you can try today to begin to rediscover your body from a place of self-awareness, rather than conditioned shame.

Your overeating episodes actually hold the key to your freedom from these behaviors. When you become curious about what was going on in your life and within that contributed to your eating episode, then you’re able to empower yourself to identify new ways to support yourself and meet your true needs so that you don’t continue to spiral in unconscious eating patterns. There IS a function for your behaviors, you just have to become aware of what that is. In this episode, I use my own cookie-eating episode to demonstrate how you can use the behavior chain process to give you insight into your eating patterns according to The 5 Bodies of Health, and how you can use this insight to improve your patterns moving forward. I also share tips for creating a morning ritual, cleansing your energy, shifting your awareness and creating energy boundaries with people who drain your energy.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as tapping, is one of my favorite self-help tools that I used on my own recovery journey and that I facilitate with clients to support them in processing the mental, emotional and energetic aspects of their internal struggle that often is driving their tendency to feed their feelings. In this episode, I offer an in depth explanation of what EFT is, explain the impressive benefits of this technique, share my personal experience using the process on my recovery journey, and provide some of the research that makes this an evidence based practice. If you stuff your feelings down with food or soothe your stress and emotional pains by eating, then this episode will help you understand how you can use tapping to effectively feel your emotions to liberate yourself from the emotional pain that tends to drive your problematic eating patterns. Trust me, it’s a game changer!

  • Some of the missing pieces to recovery that the healthcare system often is missing.
  • Why it is so important to bring families into the recovery process, and the challenges that can arise in doing so.
  • The biggest barriers to recovery that are helpful to be aware of.
  • How Tipping Point™ Recovery is changing the way we approach recovery by empowering families with the knowledge and tools to support their loved ones to sustain long-term recovery.

A huge mindset shift you can make is understanding that HOW you eat is as important as what you eat. In today’s episode, we look at a personal practice you can do on a daily basis to cultivate greater self-awareness and compassion, which is the first step to change and also to break the emotional eating cycle. Then I share one of my favorite passages that explains the impact of consuming both food and life’s experiences from a place of love versus a place of fear, and how this impacts the physical, mental and emotional body. You’ll also be challenged to consider what in your life you’re not digesting, which may be contributing to your struggle.

Project Heal is on a mission to break down systemic healthcare and financial barriers to eating disorder treatment. Of the 30 million people in the U.S. who are diagnosed with an eating disorder (meaning the number is larger including undiagnosed), less than 20% ever receive treatment. This is a huge problem considering eating disorders are the second most fatal mental illness. In this episode, I speak with Project Heal’s CEO, Rebecca Eyre, as she explains how the broken healthcare system prevents marginalized communities, such as the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities, from accessing eating disorder treatment due to a number of barriers. She also shares the amazing services that Project Heal offers, including clinical assessments, treatment placement, cash assistance and insurance navigation. If you struggle with an eating disorder and have not been able to access treatment, or you’re a provider who wants to learn how to be a part of the solution, then make sure to tune in!

What we cover in this episode:

  • About Project Heal—its mission, vision and services.
  • An alarming overview of eating disorder, treatment and recovery stats.
  • Common barriers that people face that present them from getting treatment.
  • Why it’s imperative to improve the system to provide equitable access for treatment for marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities.
  • Long-term solutions to change the system and enable treatment to all.
  • How you can apply for treatment support if you have an eating disorder.
  • If you’re a provider, how you can support Project Heal and get involved.

About Rebecca Eyre

Rebecca Eyre is the Chief Executive Officer of Project Heal and a therapist by trade, having treated eating disorders and trauma since 2011. She brings a clinical lens and programmatic focus to her leadership of the organization. Rebecca’s passion for ensuring that eating disorder healing is possible for everyone has personal roots. Professionally, her experience ranges from eating disorder treatment settings to corporate philanthropy to academic fundraising. The unifying thread of Rebecca’s career is her sincere belief in human and systemic capacity for change. She is striving to advance real change within the eating disorder field- amplifying those who have too long been ignored and excluded and expanding the field so it’s both big enough and safe enough for everyone who needs it.

'Tis the season of giving gratitude, and I’m sharing my top three favorite gratitude practices and how you can use them to shift your mindset from ruminating about food/eating/body to focusing on what matters most to you. It’s so easy to take for granted our freedoms and blessings, and get consumed by critical thoughts about your body and all the things going “wrong” in life. And yet, when you shift your perspective, you can liberate your mental energy to put toward being present and making a positive impact in this world. If we all stay brainwashed believing that our physical appearance is what matters most, then we miss the opportunity to align our thinking with our soul purpose and make the positive impact we’re here to make.

If you tend to dread the holiday season because you’re worried you won’t be able to control yourself around all the holiday foods, then this episode is for YOU. I’ll be teaching you one of the reasons that your brain is so strongly attached to certain holiday foods, to the point that you keep eating them even when you know you’re not hungry. It has to do with a psychological phenomenon called transference and how your brain pairs positive emotional energies with certain foods.

In this episode I cover:

  • How your brain creates emotional attachments to holiday foods
  • Why you eat these foods for emotional nourishment, rather than physical nourishment
  • A tapping process that can help break this mental attachment to comfort foods, so you can feel more in control around them
  • Research on the efficacy of tapping to reduce food cravings

And, if you are curious to experience this tapping process for yourself, I’ll be hosting my first ever Holiday Food Craving Tapping Workshop this month. Come join me to tap away your intense food cravings so that you can feel less dread and anxiety going into the holidays, and way more peace and empowerment around food.

In this episode, I’m sharing with you a training from my group coaching program Innergize Your Life, that walks you through The Empowered Eating Process. This is a process I’ve designed to improve how you eat, so that you can discern what you are truly hungry for and nourish yourself in the best way possible according to what your unique being and body needs.

Here’s some of what I cover:

  • A detailed overview of how to practice the Empowered Eating Process.
  • How to create a more sacred and enjoyable eating experience, because food and eating is meant to be pleasurable.
  • How to apply mindful eating principles to cultivate a deeper connection to food, your body and yourself.

Remember, practice makes permanent. It's likely that if you tend to eat mindlessly, hurriedly or on autopilot that you've simply developed a habit of eating quickly and unconsciously.

Through intentional practice, you can retrain yourself to approach eating at mealtimes with a whole new level of awareness and enjoyment that truly nourishes your body, mind and soul.

I recently met Sara Marie Miller at an apothecary in Boulder, where she created for me a customized flower essence blend to support my healing on an emotional, mental and energetic level. I became fascinated with learning about the healing power of plants, and invited Sara onto the podcast to share her impressive knowledge as a clinical herbalist and flower essence practitioner (among many other things). I’ve observed more and more of us hearing the call of nature to return to our roots and the ancient wisdom of our ancestors. If you’ve also been curious to learn about herbalism and plant medicine, then this episode is for you.

We cover in this fascinating conversation...

  • How to discover the personalities and living intelligence of plants.
  • Examples of how various herbs and plants can address the symptoms of a variety of ailments , including hormonal issues, depression and anxiety.
  • Simple steps to begin to create a connection to the plant kingdom and cultivate awareness about how various plants interact with your unique body and energy system.
  • What flower essences are (compare to essential oils) and some of the healing properties of a variety of essences including Hibiscus, Buttercup, Borage and Rock Water.
  • One plant Sara recommends using if you experience guilt, shame and rigidity around your food and eating.
  • A fun and simple meal-time practice to connect to your food and body and notice what truly feels “yummy” for you.

About Sara Marie Miller:

Sara Marie Miller is an Educator, Certified Clinical Herbalist, Nutritionist, Flower Essence Practitioner, Overnight Postpartum Doula, Reiki Master, Artist and Podcast Host of Thyme in the Studio. She loves helping folks be more resilient, happy and healthy through plant connection, nourishment, rest, creativity and self-care. She just launched a course: "Savor This Season: an Herbal Health Course" about making our food our medicine and working with Flower Essences for emotional support. A new version of the course will be available again in January.

Do you struggle with mental torment, constantly sorting through conflicting voices in your mind that are telling you what to do? You know, the one voice that says “keep eating” and the other voice that says “stop eating;” the voice of discouragement and the voice of encouragement. It can be overwhelming trying to navigate the multiple voices in your mind, which is why in this episode I share three frameworks to help you conceptualize and understand these voices:

  1. The Ego Self v True self

  2. The Wise Mind Model from DBT

  3. The Inner Parts (Child, Adolescent, Parent)

My intention is that you’ll be able to pick a model that resonates with you so that you can apply this new way of viewing the voices in your own mind, making it easier to discern who is speaking and which voice you are going to listen to moving forward. Being able to master your mind in this way is a key component on your healing journey, because as you improve your way of thinking, you’ll support yourself in improving the choices you make, not just when it comes to eating behaviors, but also in all areas of your life.

In this episode, I’m talking to attachment repair specialist Bu Nan Brown, who I just happen to have worked with over the past few months in my own healing journey, so I can attest to his expertise and healing magic. We discuss what the attachment styles are, how they can influence our personality and patterns as adults, and some of the key components of beginning the attachment repair process. We also explore how attachment can show up in your attachment to food. Bu Nan predicts that attachment work is going to be part of a big paradigm shift that’s coming in the psychology and healing spaces. After listening to this conversation, you’ll understand why. It’s truly at the foundation of how we think, feel and behave with others, the world and with food.

About Bu Nan Brown:

Bu Nan Brown is a priest in a Zen Buddhist order, Somatic Attachment Repair Specialist, Tea Ceremony facilitator, and a small-group facilitator. His journey to healing over the years has brought him through 15 years of focus on the questions, “What is the mind?” and “Why do we suffer?”

His journey eventually brought him through Authentic Relating, contemplative practices, embodiment practices, and into the field of Attachment Repair. In this newly expanding field, he has focused his practice to bring the skills and understanding out into the world so that people can stop the cycles of suffering that comes from unhealthy relationships, and learn to rest into the easefulness of deep connection.

If you have a narrative running that you need to be better, eat better, or have a better body in order to feel good, like yourself or have the life you desire, then this episode is for you. I explain the energetics of the word “better” and how it can subconsciously imply “not enough” and therefore activate a frequency of shame and self-loathing about how you are in this present moment. I advocate for why you should stop using the word “better” and offer alternative ways that you can speak about yourself and your desires to improve how you think, feel and behave that are energetically aligned with self-love and acceptance, not self-judgment. Making this one shift in how you think and speak about yourself can have dramatic effects on how you feel and therefore how you choose to nourish and move your body.

In this episode I’m having a powerful conversation with my Reiki master teacher, Christy Marsh, who was a huge guide for me on my own healing journey. We discuss what Reiki actually is (clearing up any misperceptions), some important aspects of healing, how to begin to shed your shame and rebuild self-trust, and how you can befriend food with some mindset and energy shifts. Christy was one of the first expanders I had who modeled to me the energetics of eating, revealing that the emotion and energy around HOW you eat matters more than what you eat. She shares her refreshing food philosophy and how you can liberate yourself from the prison of perfection that may be keeping you stuck in life and your eating issues. Trust me, you want to hear every word of this.

About Christy:

Christy Marsh is a Clinical Nutritionist, Holistic Health Practitioner, and a Reiki Master dedicated to treating the whole person. Using a “bio-individual” approach, she’s able to assess the unique needs of each individual. Christy is highly trained and educated to offer a whole regime of foods and herbs, energy work, body reading and lifestyle-fitness solutions that work.

Christy brings a positive spirit and light-hearted approach to the work she does; combining practical western modalities and a holistic attitude to whole body healing. Christy was trained in San Diego and had a practice in La Jolla for nearly ten years before returning to her native Midwest where she now resides. She lectures nationally on the benefits of healing within.

Believe it or not, you don’t just reach for food when you’re stressed, upset or overwhelmed simply because you don’t have willpower. There are very good reasons why your brain has learned this emotional eating pattern as a way to self-sooth, and it likely began in childhood. In this episode, I’ll be explaining the theory of emotional eating (and other more severe eating disorders like binge eating and bulimia) according to dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). With a better understanding of why you developed this cycle in the first place, you can release the self-judgment and shame you’ve been spiraling in and empower yourself to take effective actions to begin to change the cycle. New knowledge and self-awareness is the first step to change.

There is quite a bit of confusion about what binge eating actually is due to media portrayals of overeating that normalize using food to soothe or overeating as fun. I have clients come to me who tell me they binge, but after describing their behaviors to me it turns out they actually just emotionally overeat, but it’s not technically binging. On the other hand, some clients come to me and minimize their eating tendencies but upon deeper exploration we discover they technically meet the criteria for binge eating, according to the DSM-V manual. So this episode is meant to clear up any confusion! I explain mindless eating, emotional overeating and subjective/objective binge eating so you can better understand your own eating patterns. Because when you have this clarity, then you can make informed decisions about the best support to seek and steps to take to improve these patterns.

There is such power in sharing our stories, and this is mine. At least part of mine. The part of my life journey where I develop a variety of eating disorders, hit rock bottom, and then embark on my tumultuous path to recovery. I share the factors that created the perfect storm for my eating disorder to emerge like a ferocious monster taking over my mind and behaviors. I give you a glimpse of how bad it got for me, because I want you to know that I understand the depths of pain and suffering you may be experiencing as a result of your own eating issues.

The second act is the triumphant part of the story, where I achieve recovery and go on to become a therapist and energy work practitioner who now supports others on their healing journey. I offer an overview of my career path that has led me here, from being a researcher at an obesity center at Yale University to running an IOP program for binge eating disorder at UCSD, and more (so you can feel assured trusting my expertise and knowledge in this field).

I hope this episode leaves you feeling inspired knowing that if I can get better, so can you. And that you’re not alone on this journey.

After a 5 year recovery journey and 10 year career specializing in food and eating issues, there is one thing I can say confidently: your struggle with food is NOT just about food.

In this first episode, I share with you my framework for conceptualizing overeating issues called the 5 Bodies of Health, and give a brief overview of the physical, mental, emotional, energetic and soul bodies that may be underling your struggle with food. This will give you insight into your own self so you can identify areas you may benefit from focusing on addressing in your healing journey (other than going on another diet or trying to control food, ick).
