Throughout Scripture, whenever God revealed His vision, He always expected a response. Noah built. Abraham went. Moses obeyed. The disciples left their nets and followed. Together We Go reminded us that the future of the Church is never built by spectators. It is built by stewards. Over the past three weeks, we have talked about vision, discipleship, community, generosity, outreach, and the calling God has placed upon Donelson First to remain the light on the hill. But this week, Senior Pastor Jeffrey Smith challenged us with an important truth:
"Vision without stewardship eventually remains only words."
This message was not merely about finances. It was about worship. Obedience. Spiritual maturity. This is part one of a sixteen week study through the book of James. Pastor Jeffrey begins this verse by verse study with James 1:1-12. "James is not writing as an outsider. He is not writing as an academic. He is not writing as a detached observer. He is writing as a brother who once doubted, a disciple who encountered the risen Christ, a pastor who shepherded suffering believers, and a servant who belonged wholly to Jesus! And now, believing, he speaks to us!"
"It is about discovering that before you ever do anything for God, you already belong to Him. And from this belonging flows a life of transformation."
In this the final part of Pastor Jeffrey's Advent series he teaches on the final components of God's provision and plan for Christ's birth: the magi. They recognized the star because God had been preparing them for years, through Daniel's teachings in Babylon. Every step of the advent story was a part of God's pre orchestrated plan.
"The same God who guided the Magi… The same God who warned Joseph… The same God who protected the Christ-child… …is the God who sees your tomorrow before you ever get there."
In Part 4 of our Advent series Pastor Jeffrey begins by a look into the person Luke. The one who wrote the story of Jesus's birth, without having met Jesus during His earthly ministry. The story of Jesus was related in order that all of us could hear of it and be blessed by it. It is the very promise of God fulfilled.

In Part 3 of our Advent series Pastor Jeffrey explores the cultural context and significance of the details surrounding our saviors birth. From the task of these particular shepherds to the language utilized throughout Luke God was writing a story that was understood to the Hebrews even as it was being written.
"Is this not just like the Lord? He takes the vocabulary of the culture - the words normally used to exalt earthly power - and He turns them toward a far greater truth."
Part 2 of our Advent series looks closer at the prophetic details perfectly fulfilled by the birth of Christ. Pastor Jeffrey details the historic context of Jesus's birth place, and the beautiful prophetic fulfillment found in it. " Every detail was divine. Every detail was anointed. Every detail precisely as God wanted it to be."

In Part 18 of From Fear to Freedom, we see that each of the plagues from God is directed against one or more of the 3 main forces in Egyptian life: the Nile, the land, and the sun. We also see that once the Pharaoh understood that God was more powerful than he, the King attempted to negotiate with God to broker a compromise of a meeting in the middle.
In this week’s time of study, we see the reality of the Pharaoh’s sin and its aftermath upon the nation of Egypt by reading the story as if we were in the story.
From the moment God revealed His will to Moses as Moses stood barefoot on holy ground before a burning bush, Moses was forced to decide upon whom his allegiance would rest. And his choice to journey back to the land where he had once been wanted dead was one that now placed him at odds with so very many people.
Though God has proven Himself faithful over and again in the story, we still see that Moses is a man vacillating between trust and fear. Join us in week 15 on our journey as we see how God continues to direct Moses’ steps.

As we continue our journey with Moses, we see God is concurrently restoring his faith and confidence after living 40 years with immense and unfathomable feelings of insignificance, all the while preparing him to do the unthinkable in the lives of millions of Hebrews, and too, in his own life.
As we continued our study and examined Exodus 3:11-22, Pastor Jeffrey taught us that Moses does not yet fully comprehend what God is doing. What we are learning from the man Moses is the responsibility we have, while exercising free-will, to obediently follow the ways and workings of God.
On day one of his new life, Moses comes to the far side of the wilderness where he meets with God and God reveals His divine plan.
Scripture tells us Moses spent 40 years, 14,610 days, living as a nomad taking care of sheep. That’s a long time! But as the saying goes, “What a difference a day can make.” On the day the bush caught fire, day one of a new life began as God chose to speak to Moses.
Moses stepped ahead of God’s plans, and it sent him on a 40 year journey. But what we are going to see is that, even amidst the missteps:
God still remains in control even when I have lost control.
As we celebrate Easter, we do so studying the parallels of two men - Moses and Jesus - remembering that it was obedience that led Moses from an Egyptian palace to the Promised Land and ultimate love that led Jesus from the cross to an empty tomb.

The state of Donelson First is strong, and God is doing a new thing. We anticipate and expect that God will continue to do more than we can ever dream or imagine as He continues inspiring people to know, grow, and go in Jesus.
As it relates to the state of the Church, we have a lot of work to do. We have to let the world know that the way to the kingdom of God is narrow and that there is a cost to following Jesus. To live is Christ is the hardest thing we will ever do while on this planet.
We consider how we as the Church can love the unloved, and feed the poor, and support the elderly.
All of these pursuits are noble, and needed, and necessary.
But do we spend equal, and even more, time and thought and tenacity on becoming as Christ? In the final message of our May I Ask A Question series, Pastor Jeffrey asks us to consider: Has the Church forgotten the Christ of Christianity?
If I am to love, to truly love others, I am to do so fully aware that such love requires of me no compromise to the ways of Scripture. The problem for much of Christianity is that we condemn without compassion, and we label without love. We should be the loudest voice of love that does not merely highlight the sins of humanity. Rather, the voice above all others that points to the beauty and richness and grace to be discovered in a life of freedom that begins with Jesus.
Contrary to the peace of the world that is dependent upon circumstances, the peace Jesus offers is optimally manifested amid persecution, pain, tribulation, and tears. None of these thoughts are true; none whatsoever! And to the contrary, such teachings are simply false doctrine. The Holy Spirit is a divine person. The Holy Spirit is God Himself; a Spirit who is available, ready, accessible, and intricately and intimately involved in the life of a Christ-follower.
Time is such a critical aspect of life. It too is a gift for us each that, if not careful, can be misused. In this episode, Pastor Jeffrey discusses this gift in relation to the creation of the world, the existence of dinosaurs and the afterlife.

No matter my worldly knowledge, personal successes, accomplishments, accolades, and notoriety, if I get my eternity wrong, nothing else matters. I need salvation because the dreadful reality of the presence of sin in my life requires there is no other way for me to avoid spiritual death.
Many Christians view holiness as a lofty position at which one almost never arrives. God views holiness as a state of being I can achieve as I daily resolve to do what is right. Holiness requests I forsake the life I want for the life God demands.
Everything I need to know about God’s expectations and parameters for divorce & remarriage are in God’s Word. On many topics, God states repeatedly what He feels and believes in Scripture. However, God does not always do this. While there are few verses on the topic of divorce in the Bible, those mentioned are extremely clear.
Asking “Why me, God?” insinuates the expectation that life is to be easy, and, as a Christian, God is expected to isolate me from humanity’s misfortunes. Of course, this is not true. Such knowledge may not change my situation, but it does give me an opportunity to embrace peace and trust rather than anger in the midst of my dark moments.
There are many different interpretations and disagreements among the Church. Two people won’t see everything, every situation, and every life choice the same every single time. This is okay. What is not okay is to use such disagreements as an excuse to draw battle lines of conflict over which you never work to dissolve.
In the Bible, the main things God wants us to clearly know, He made clearly known. Both the first and the last call of Jesus to His followers was one of evangelism. So it is obvious that sharing the gospel is critically important to Jesus. It too should be important to me.
God welcomes my questions. God can handle my questions. However, God does not have to answer my questions. If God can be trusted when He speaks, He too is worthy of my trust when He is silent.
After life on planet earth, every human faces the same reality. Every human will either go to heaven or hell, and every human gets to decide which one will be their eternal destination.As a follower of Jesus Christ, eternity does not begin when I die. Instead, it begins when I surrender my life to Jesus.
Church without Jesus is nothing more than a collective group of people completely wasting their time. If we strive for personal holiness in our lives, we then corporately reflect the nature of Jesus Christ as the Church.
To better understand the cross and the reason for why we celebrate the empty tomb, we first must understand the fullness of what Jesus did and why He did it!
To not believe that the truth of all Orthodoxy centers on the person of Jesus Christ, is to not believe in any Orthodoxy. Without Jesus my life has no meaning. Without Jesus, my choices, big or small, really do not matter, and eternity is horrific... and hell awaits us all.
Family is extremely important to God. Therefore, family must be extremely important to me. I must take seriously my role in helping my family shine as an Orthodoxy-led family.
Nowhere in scripture does God muddy the waters on the gender or the sexuality by which we have been created. Nowhere. Our children are confused because we are allowing the messaging to encourage their confusion. Orthodoxy is the only guide that will lead humanity in the right and holy and ordained direction.
Humanity – the pinnacle of God’s creation. God was really showing off when He created man and woman. And now the ownership is on us to live up to the standard by which we have been created.
Lies, no matter how convincing, are still lies. Lies mislead. Lies create confusion. Lies have consequences. Lies will always lead to death. There are many lies surrounding the events of the origin of the world. How you view the first chapter of the Bible dictates how you view the remaining 1,188 chapters of the Bible, and, ultimately what you deem as truth… or lies.

The answer might surprise you.
The markers for a moral compass, for right and for wrong, to distinguish the east from the west, have already been established for us. Fortunately, we do not have to define the markers. We just have to follow them.

I will live a long, sad, and sorrow-filled life of bitterness and regret. Both sorrow and joy are simultaneously a part of my journey as a Christian.
Learning to live with joy is potentially one of the most challenging exercises for the Christ-follower. But learning to live with joy will too be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling and completing and freeing exercises for the Christ-follower.
