January 11th, 2025 is the 20th Anniversary of this legendary day at the Tower. Since its the 25th Anniversary, we decided to re-release this episode. Enjoy!
January 11th, 2000 is a very historic day in Oklahoma City concert history. Slipknot was scheduled to play the Tower Theater for the 3rd time. The first show, they didn't have enough room to play the show due to being the opener on a Coal Chamber & Machine Head Package Tour. Max & Jimmy Johnson from Element, scramble, put their heads together to figure out how to get Slipknot back to OKC to play a headlining date. They have an off day on a Monday 10 days later, resulting in Slipknot coming back to play for 400 or so people with Element & Lowlife opening the show. Max see's the popularity of the band growing & wants to bring them back through again & the January 11th, 2000 date was booked. Keep in mind, during this time, 23rd street OKC, was not the nice vibrant neighborhood that it is now! It was a dangerous place to be with vacant store fronts everywhere. We set down with Max Baker Jr. & Jeff Brownen to tell their accounts of what happned that day, where they were during the chaos, the discussions between the band management & the booking agent, & paying the band, all before Slipknot decided not to play. There were rumors for years about what happened that night, Hopefully this clears up some of the chaos & confusion & brings people back together!
Published & Aired Feb. 28th, 2000 on MTV News - "It was a bad gig, man. We learned out lesson," Corey Taylor (#8) continued. "We're never going to play there again. We're going to play a place that will hold everybody. And he will not be involved," percussionist Shawn Crahan (#6) added.

Fast Forward 22 years later to 2022 & Max Baker Jr. was involved in a Slipknot show in Oklahoma, where his company The Baker Boys did production load in & load out.... and yes, Max was in the building, from start to finish!

He came across a vendor who was selling an 11 x 17 poster print of Stevie Ray Vaughn performing at Lloyd Noble in 1986 while playing his Number 1, SRV Fender Strat, while wearing a Native American Head Dress, which is from a photo that Max Baker Jr. took with a camera that he snuck into the show! He recognized the photo & the vendor confirmed, it was indeed from a photo that Max had taken!!!!!! We also discuss an absolutely incredible metal show that came through the Cains Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma.... Lamb of God, Trivium, Machinehead, & Gojira!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another legendary show we discuss is the Red Hot Chili Peppers make up show at the Cox Convention Center... The make up date featured Mickey Avalon as the opener instead, & OKC did not like Mickey's performance at all... So much so, they loudly boooooooooo'd during his entire performance.. Extremely Loud Boo's!!!!!! So much so, Flea came out very pissed off & let the fans know exactly how he felt about their behavior!

We finally made it to this legendary show at the Zoo Amp in OKC.
The Flaming Lips - UFO's at the Zoo! (which is available on DVD)
This show was one of the most epic shows ever at the Zoo. Everything from Wayne being lowered onto the stage from a UFO, to him getting in the bubble & walking out onto the crowd. There were so many people at the Zoo for this show, the security guards & police, stepped away from the gates & let everyone inside the venue... Literally the most people i've ever seen at the Zoo.
The end of this episode we revisit a Lynyrd Skynyrd show that happened at the Buffalo Run in Miami where the show almost didn't happen from a mishap on the stage.

We often say this show, or that show was Legendary, or a historic event.... This one truly was Legendary.... So many people in one place. A logistical nightmare... Working events like this are not for the weak or faint of heart. When the pressure is on, & the clock is ticking, quitting is not an option, that is when The Fabulous Baker Boys shine & the job gets done... GO RANGERS!!!!

Earlier this year, the reality show that Mike was a cast member of, "Ride of Your Life w/ Courtney Hansen" that aired on MOTORTREND TV wrapped up airing of Season 1. While Mike was in the middle of filming season 1 for that show, He got a call about an audition for an upcoming movie being filmed in Oklahoma. Little did he know that it was a Martin Scorsese production and would be his film adaptation of the book, "Killers of The Flower Moon" which was based on true events that took place in Oklahoma. Jay Ramone actually got to meet Robert Plant that night at the Kings of Leon show... One of the most famous lines that everyone has heard Max say, "You wanna meet the band????"..... HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAX BAKER JR!
We decided to release this Episode on Max's Birthday (he doesn't know we decided to release it early for his bday)! March 20th, 1987, The Ramones were on the "Animal Boy" Tour which came through Dallas, TX at The Longhorn Ballroom (newly reopened BTW). This was the very first time Max had interviewed an artist. Up until this point as a journalist, he had only taken photographs for JAM Magazine. He hadn't actually interviewed anyone yet. Max has said for years that he had the cassette recording of him interviewing Joey Ramone backstage at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, TX. None of us believed him, & we were wrong. He did indeed interview Joey Ramone. He found the cassette & we have digitized it & included the interview in this episode. The audio from this cassette has degraded over the years. There was a few hours of clean up work needed, just to be able to understand what Max & Joey are saying because of all of the noise & things going on in the Ramones dressing room while this interview was taking place. Marky is drumming on the table in the background the whole time. The rest of the band are carrying on with whatever conversations they were having, so there is a lot going on but we did our best to clean it up enough to be able to hear Max's questions, as well as Joey's answers.
On the Ramones - Animal Boy Tour, there were 2 setlists that were used but i couldn't find the exact setlist for the Dallas show. Heres is the link to the setlist from the New Orleans show in the same month - https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/ramones/1987/mcalister-auditorium-tulane-university-new-orleans-la-4bc98f92.html

As Kool & Tha Gang would say, "Celebrate Good Times, Come on!!!!" We are celebrating the release of 50 Episodes of The Here's The Deal Podcast, The Max Baker Jr. Story. We begin in June of 2004 w/ a mini gathering in OKC & an Infinite Records Showcase at Bricktown Live. Jeff Brownen finds an All Access Pass from a couple of Drowning Pool shows, one in Tulsa & one in OKC. The pass featured Moore, Oklahoma's own Jesse Jane. Seeing the picture of Jesse jogged Max's memory about being in a music video with Jesse Jane... Max played a preacher who got a lap dance from Jesse inside of a Church... The band was called "Shotgun Rebellion" & the song is called "Devil's Daughter" with the video shot & produced by Clark Deal at 3130 Studios & is available to stream on Youtube. Max's Mom was not impressed with his acting debut... HAHAHAHA!!!! One of the biggest bands in the world in 2023 is The Killers, who are selling out Arena's & Stadiums, Max discusses a show w/ The Killers live at Bricktown Live in 2004, a less than 500 capacity venue, where tickets were less than $10.... Every band has to start somewhere....

A Bob Dylan sing-a-long to start this Episode. We pick up in 2004 w/ The Crossroads Guitar Festival again then transition into a chain of events in Max's life, that would knock him back down to the bottom. Monday June 7th, 2004 is a big moment in this story. However, if it were the end of his Rock N Roll Adventures, this podcast wouldn't exist. This is an in depth conversation about the pitfalls of owning a record store selling new & used product.
"My old band, from Tulsa/Claremore played our very first Oklahoma City show for Max at Bricktown Live opening for Old School NYHC band Murphy's Law w/ OKC band Old Major on Wednesday June 9th, 2004. I didn't know until recording this episode what Max was going through in his personal life. My mind is completely blown right now!" - Jay Ramone

One of the most legendary shows at Bricktown Live in OKC ever!!!!! Damageplan came to Bricktown w/ local bands Lock n Load & Element... The day of the show, Dimebag Darrell Abbott (Pantera/Damageplan/Hellyeah) decided he wanted to have a cookout, went across the street to Bass Pro Shop in Bricktown & bought a grill & all the supplies needed & had a cookout, right outside the frontdoor of the venue next to the bus... We should have catered 4 fried chickens, dry, white toast, & a coke for this Episode as we begin in Blues Brothers style. We discuss the Nate Dog from Element, Tribute show on Feb. 29th, 2004 w/ Failsafe, Disjointed, Wither, Old Major, etc... This was the first show at the Diamond Ballroom where Max had 2 stages inside the venue. One stage would have a band playing, while the 2nd stage was loading on & setting up. Move forward to March for an Infinite Records showcase with Lure & more OKC bands. March 21st, 2004 @ the Diamond Ballroom, Ill Nino, Flaw, 40 Below Summer, & Element80 rolled through OKC on a $400 tour package. We finish with a show at the Coca-Cola Bricktown Event Center, where an artist did not approve of the limosuine provided to take them from the hotel to the venue... There are two ways to handle situations like this.... You can get upset, throw a fit to the promoter until you get what you want or don't get what you want, but by acting like this, you make everyone's day difficult.... or.... you can be cool, be respectful & figure out a solution without being disrespectful to everyone you're working with that day.... Twista & his camp, handled it incorrectly.... So unfortunately, strict curfew rules apply once the show is over.

We decided to release Episode 45 a little early.... So bare with us as we get out of order on this one. Episode 44 has not been skipped. It will still drop on Monday as originally intended. Part of getting older that no one likes to talk about or deal with is, losing those close to us along the way. Many of these people played a huge part of Max's life, concerts, event productions, building stages, driving artists all over this state & being part of the Adventures of Max Baker Jr. On February 22nd, 2023, we lost another legend, Ronnie Gene Simpson (63). Max met Ronnie at a very young age riding mini bikes, ripping through the southside as well as getting banned from a school talent show. They reconnected as young adults and began working shows & events together, leaving a trail of stories along the way. This episode is a tribute to several of our fallen brothers that helped create these stories....

We begin this episode with Back to Back All American Rejects shows at the Brady Theater in Tulsa & the Bricktown Events Center in Oklahoma City. The Tulsa show was filmed for a DVD release... After that we discuss another Tulsa Pimpadelic show.... Where are they now????? We'd love to hear from someone from the Pimpadelic camp to get them on this podcast! June 8th, 2003, KATTFEST featured Godsmack as the headliner... 20 years later, Godsmack headlines KATTFEST 2023! This podcast is as much about the Music & Entertainment Business as it is about the history & legendary concerts that have come through Oklahoma. We discuss what happens next for the next crop of Classic Rock artists... 1990's Grunge artists are now, technically Classic Rock artists. How do they continue to tour & remain relevant?!? We also discuss an Otherside show with Killswitch Engage that didn't happen, the band cancelled the day of the show due to travel issues. The fans were extremely upset about the show not happening & taking it out on Max. The attitudes being thrown at Max, made him think it was a good idea to put the Tour Managers cel phone number on the front door, encouraging the attendee's to call the TM & voice their displeasure. (...not recomended btw)...
