A podcast about all things that exist at the intersection between learning, marketing, and the technology that can make it all happen.
Hey, everyone! Listen to the intro for the longer version of this, but for family-related reasons, I'm putting the podcast on indefinite hiatus. I'm not sure if I will leave the podcast live online or if I will pull it down, but please go back and listen to previous episodes just in case. I may return to the podcast, but I also may not; I just need to take some time for life to settle.

The two scenarios with which I'd like to help you, small business owners:
Think like an instructional designer to solve customer-facing learning problems (e.g., courses or effective lead magnet job aids).
Think like an Instructional Designer to solve internal learning problems.
Note on this: You know that advice that you sometimes hear thrown around about creating a business that you'd be willing to sell in several years? Well, whether or not you're interested in selling your business, it is definitely a wise choice to start now creating documents that give exact instructions as to your workflow on key business tasks and procedures. The reason? At some point, especially if you're a solo-preneur, there will come a day when your business takes off where you'll need to hire someone to help you take care of certain tasks that are important but could be done by anyone. I'm talking about a virtual assistant or VA. Even if you're a larger, well established business, you may find yourself in a situation where you have several key employees who are absolutely vital to your business but for whose positions there is no manual; in other words, if one of these employees was hit by a bus (God forbid), the whole ship will go down. This is where I want to help you think like a learning design professional who can diagnose exactly what these vitally important employees do and come up with a living document for their workday procedures that could be passed to someone else if that person is out for a few days. It'll ensure that your business runs more smoothly because you'll have peace of mind and your employees can take time off without huge interruptions to your business internally. Incidentally, this will also make your business more "sellable" since your internal operations will be cleanly documented, which will make it easier for the next owner to train new employees.

Hey folks! This is my first official test of Descript, which is an amazing new audio/video editing tool that also allows you to automatically create a transcript from an audio file, create an AI-generated clone of your voice for making edits (when you make a mistake an need to fix without having to re-record), and other simply amazing tools. We'll get into those later, but today, I wanted to see how this worked, and so I've recorded this episode in my car (per the usual), using my worst microphone (the apple earbuds mic), but I've also checked the box in Descript for "Studio Quality," which seems to add noise reduction, compression, and other things to bring out your voice clearly, even in less-than-ideal environments.
I've also made the transcript for this episode available, exactly as Descript heard it (mistakes and all). It's actually pretty accurate. If you want to check out Descript for yourself, I recommend a free trial (not an affiliate link): https://www.descript.com/

Quick tip I learned yesterday, and I thought I'd pass it along: If you're using a piece of software that you purchased with an educational discount, you need to make sure that you are in compliance with the End User License Agreement (EULA), if you are (or are planning to) use the software commercially.

On this episode, I get into some of the exciting things going on with my website-building tool, Thrive Suite. I didn't really mean to get into this in today's episode, but I started chatting about major selection in college, which is what I discuss with undergraduate students all day in my current day job. Essentially, your most important skills are based on hard experience, not really what's printed on your diploma, so I encourage students to think about internships and being involved in projects they believe in and for which they can play some sort of meaningful role.
It's the same for you in business: You need to focus on projects and experiences that actually move the needle in your work. This kind of activity will help others to notice you and the value that you can bring to their business and/or lives.

Camtasia really is just the best tool for creating great training and simple marketing videos. It's super easy, and I was particularly reminded of this today while returning to some work I did on an opening graphic for a series of videos I'm planning to release. Hey y'all! I'm working form home today, which means I'm on a real studio mic. Over the break, I'm going to be making several episodes like this where I sit at my desk in the mornings to record. Since the university will be shutting down for a week or so over the break, and I don't want to get behind making podcast episodes, I'm going to be practicing recording from home.

In this episode, among other things, I talk a little about my experience thus far with Descript's free trial. I also get into what I think TechSmith (the company that makes Camtasia and Snagit) should do in response. Most notably, TechSmith already has the technology with Audiate to compete with Descript; they just need to integrate it better with Camtasia.

In this episode, I reflect on the paper I'm writing as the final project for my Management of Technology Resources course (EDET 746). I also look ahead to next semester's classes (three more to go before graduation!), and I also think about what life might be like once this master's is done.

This episode is admittedly a bit all over the place but this is kind of indicative of this time of year; things are slowing down with my course, I'm thinking about the holidays, and what I'll do with my free time once I don't have any schoolwork to worry about.

For my current master's course, Management of Technology Resources, we had to read the following article, about which I share my thoughts in today's episode:

In this episode I get into some of the differences between Camtasia and Descript, and I try to answer the question: Who is winning between these two amazing pieces of software?
I also get into some of my thoughts on the hitsongdesign.com concept and how I might approach teaching without using examples from actual hit songs, which is an interesting pedagogical problem.

I watched this YouTube video the other day and it kind of put the brakes on my original idea of using existing hit songs as material to teach composition and arranging techniques to songwriters on my YouTube channel (I haven't started doing this just yet). The idea was to use these hit songs as teaching material and to hopefully grow the channel a bit more quickly, but I'm not sure it will be possible to do this any longer. That said, I'm still planning to teach this composition and arranging to songwriters on YouTube; it's just that the growth of the channel may need to be a bit more slow and steady than I had originally thought.
Here's the video I watched: https://youtu.be/E5Whrmqx9UY

I'm currently writing a paper on the technology plans at two higher education institutions: Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL, and Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, TN. Along the way, I found this really interesting article, titled Technology Problems and Student Achievement Gaps: A Validation and Extension of the Technology Maintenance Construct, which really got me thinking about my own blind spots as a person of privilege. The article also provides some interesting suggestions as to what higher education institutions can do to help reduce the achievement gap due to technology-related problems.

In this episode, I practice for a presentation I have to give next week on my recommended best practices to make any lecture interactive. My audience in this case is faculty at a university, but I think the principles in this particular presentation could be applied in a number of different scenarios.
At one point in the presentation, I mention a service called Kahoot! and so I wanted to be sure and link it (not an affiliate link).
Finally, I don't think I mention this in the episode, but the format for the title of my lecture and this podcast episode came from a book called Advertising Headlines That Make You Rich: Create Winning Ads, Web Pages, Sales Letters and Moreby David Garfinkel.

In today's episode, I try to break down the YouTube marketing/teaching strategies of the two audio recording companies I follow: PreSonus, makers of Studio One, and Steinberg, makers of Cubase. Cubase, in this case, is the older, more established brand, having been around for about two decades longer than Studio One. That said, the two companies have a pretty different approach to their YouTube strategies, and I try to unpack why I think PreSonus is coming for Steinberg if they're not careful.

In this episode, I get into this idea of garnering a sense of emotional connectedness in online courses to help ensure retention rates. I have personally benefitted, in my current M.Ed. program, from activities, such as group projects in online courses that--while pedagogically sound--also fostered a sense of belonging. Since completing these assignments, I look forward to checking in with classmates with whom I have worked in the past; these connections have, in part, kept me going and make me more motivated to finish the master's.

I got my first grade back in Management of Technology Resources the other day, and so far so good. I think paring down your tools to a simpler (and less expensive) setup is key to greater productivity. I tend to hoard really cool software tools, and often these tools do the same kinds of tasks, but this redundancy is what needs to be eliminated. Learning keyboard shortcuts and general navigation for software that performs the same tasks as your other pieces of software can slow you down and is just way more expensive than it needs to be.

I'm still in between classes, and now that the dust has somewhat settled from my internship, I have a few thoughts on the best way to use Camtasia and PowerPoint together. I love the period between classes in this master's program. Camtasia's built-in interactivity features such as quizzing and interactive hotspots, which can be inserted and used directly within a video, are simply brilliant. Sometimes you just work too hard and it's time for a break. Sometimes you don't realize how much you need a break until you're forced to take one, so the key is to escape fairly often on mini vacations, preferably trips that take you off the grid for a little while. Trust me; this really works.

That's right. I'm noticing that—due to the informal nature of recording these episodes in the car—that the content is getting a bit long and ramble-y. So, in the interest of keeping things more to-the-point, I'm hatching a plan to keep episodes shorter (and also to keep my Buzzsprout monthly quota of time within the limit).
What does this mean for you? It means the content should be better in general: higher quality and more valuable (at least, this is the goal).

In higher education, we tend to get a little testy when we think our students aren't reading their emails, and while this can be a real problem, we also don't tend to think about how many emails students actually receive on a daily/weekly basis (spoiler: it's a lot of emails!). In this video, I talk about a huge blindspot for me as a content creator: Accessibility. This is an incredibly important topic and one that I have largely ignored, I'm ashamed to say. Though accessibility should be considered no matter what, as it is the right thing to do, it can also be considered a key to unlocking a wider audience for your content. While creating new videos, podcast, blog, etc., we should always think about who wouldn't be able to consume this content due to a disability, and then make every effort to make it accessible to all.
In this episode, I also make reference to a University of California Systemwide Talent Management video on Microsoft Word and Word-to-PDF Accessibility Remediation, which shouldn't be considered the final word on this topic, but was helpful to me in this process. It also showed me the work that must be included in my future workflow when creating accessible documents.
I still have a long way to go in my journey learning about accessibility, but I'm so grateful that I am finally starting to incorporate best practices into my workflow.

Today, I'm thinking about Job Aids or Visual Guides because I've been neck deep in a project for my internship that requires me to create a 1-page Job Aid. I'm also thinking ahead to when I will have a more high quality intro to this podcast, which will be possible to insert after the fact with Buzzsprout's Dynamic Content feature.

Gosh, having a live podcast is exhilarating, but also scary; it means I have to be on top of this thing and really focus on being consistent. School is going well, but is stressful for other reasons. Basically, there are a ton of things happening all at once, but I know I can do it; I just need to remain focused.

In this episode, I get a little into my thoughts on Ryan Levesque's book, Choose, which he wrote after is hugely popular Ask. Specifically, I share thoughts on how a business with a more utilitarian aspect (e.g., plumbing) could find ways to get into an enthusiast market.

In this episode, and in keeping with yesterday's conversation about software, I share a bit about the story of the rise of Dorico, a music notation software I use to create music.
I don't know why I love music creation software so much, but apparently I really love to talk about, and Dorico is right up there near the top of the list when it comes to tools I use for music.

In this episode, I consider how hard it is to write and maintain high quality software, particularly audio software like what I use on a daily basis. Please think about this next time you're tempted to be upset over the lack of some feature in your favorite program; so many folks go on rants on the internet without thinking about how hard it might be to add the feature (or how long the list of requests might be).

I may start hosting a podcast for my day job, geared toward college students! I will keep you all posted on whether or not this happens, but it seems like a really interesting idea. My boss, a couple coworkers, and myself have started to parse through what this might look like for the University Advising Center here at the University of South Carolina, and I think it will be a cool exercise to see how a podcast could serve students who are trying to figure out their major. Again, more on this soon.
