Donald Trump tried to illegally influence the 2016 presidential election by preventing damaging stories about his personal life from becoming public, a prosecutor told jurors Monday at the start of the former president’s historic hush money trial.
“This was a planned, coordinated, long-running conspiracy to influence the 2016 election — to help Donald Trump get elected through illegal expenditures to silence people who had something bad to say about his behavior, using doctored corporate records and bank forms to conceal those payments along the way,” prosecutor Matthew Colangelo said. “It was election fraud, pure and simple.”
President Joe Biden has officially signed the bill that will ban TikTok unless ByteDance sells it off in the next nine months. The bill also contains funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, and will introduce a series of sanctions on foreign adversaries.
The Senate voted 79 to 18 in favor of the bill late Tuesday.
“For years we’ve allowed the Chinese Communist party to control one of the most popular apps in America that was dangerously shortsighted,” said Senator Marco Rubio, the top Republican on the Intelligence Committee. “A new law is going to require its Chinese owner to sell the app. This is a good move for America.”
Only 18 percent of teens support a TikTok ban. Additionally, Republicans are more likely to support a TikTok bank—although this number declined from 60 percent in March to 50 percent in October. Only 29 percent of registered Democrats said they would support a ban as of October.
The app is officially banned from US government phones due to its ability to collect data and potentially send it to the Chinese government. National security concerns about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) collecting data is the primary reason behind the bill, which was originally named “the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.”

Senate passes $95 billion package with aid for Ukraine and Israel
The Senate passed a $95.3 billion foreign aid bill with assistance for Ukraine and Israel in a vote early Tuesday morning, setting up a showdown with the House as Speaker Mike Johnson has said he does not plan to bring the bill to the floor.
The foreign aid package includes billions of dollars to support Ukraine and for security assistance for Israel, as well as humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza, the West Bank and Ukraine, among other priorities.
The bill includes $60 billion to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia, $14.1 billion in security assistance for Israel, $9.2 billion in humanitarian assistance and $4.8 billion to support regional partners in the Indo-Pacific region in addition to other policy provisions, according to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Johnson told reporters on Tuesday that he is not planning to put the package on the House floor, setting up a major clash between the two chambers

The Dems Try To Bankrupt Trump. It’s Incredibly Ugly.
This is the case in which Attorney General Letitia James came into office pledging to target Trump, which prosecutors should not do. One does not go into office vowing to target “that guy.” Rather, one vows to prosecute a crime — not find the criminal. The person who does the crime is by definition, the criminal.
If a specific person is targeted, then that looks very much like malicious and selective prosecution, which is exactly what James was doing.

Former President Donald Trump must pay $83.3 million in damages for defamatory statements he made denying he sexually assaulted the writer E. Jean Carroll, a federal jury ruled Friday, handing down a stunning verdict after less than three hours of deliberation.
The jury awarded Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. The compensatory amount included $11 million for repairing her reputation and $7.3 million for emotional harm.
Carroll's attorneys asked the jury to award $24 million in compensatory damages. The punitive amount, lawyer Roberta Kaplan said, should be enough to "make him stop" defaming her client.

After GoFundMe decided to freeze $10 million raised for the thousands of truckers protesting in Ottawa, GiveSendGo, an online Christian fundraising platform, stepped up to help the truckers receive donations.
Meanwhile, Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., announced that he was going to investigate the “deceptive practices” of GoFundMe.
“It is a fraud for @gofundme to commandeer $9 million in donations sent to support truckers and give it to causes of their own choosing,” DeSantis tweeted shortly after GoFundMe reversed their policy and said they would refund donations.
“I will work with [Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody] to investigate these deceptive practices—these donors should be given a refund,” added DeSantis.

Gas lines in America may be rare, but they're not unprecedented.
The gas shortage in the Northeast, the result of Superstorm Sandy, is inflicting plenty of pain. But it's a localized phenomenon that's not expected to last for long.
During two separate oil crises in the 1970s, Americans from coast to coast faced persistent gas shortages as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, flexed its muscles and disrupted oil supplies.
In 1973 and again in 1979, drivers frequently faced around-the-block lines when they tried to fill up.
Drivers would go to stations before dawn or late at night, hoping to avoid the lines.
Odd-even rationing was introduced — meaning that if the last digit on your license plate was odd, you could get gas only on odd-numbered days. New Jersey and New York have just reintroduced the system.
Back in the '70s, some gas stations took to posting flags — green if they had gas, yellow if rationing was in effect and red if they were out of gas.
To conserve gas, the maximum speed limit was cut to 55 miles per hour. To cut energy consumption in the broader economy, daylight saving time was introduced year-round at the beginning of 1974, facing criticism from parents whose kids had to go to school before sunrise in the winter months.
When the second crisis hit in 1979-80, President Carter described combating it as the "moral equivalent of war," and many Americans feared that oil shocks would be a recurring nightmare.
