It's Roksanna and Prarthna again. Today we spoke with Alex Wood ('26) and Carly Wilson ('26) of the women's soccer team. On Sat. Nov. 12, they will be playing the University of South Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tournament, so before they left we decided to chat. We talked about how they ended up in Winston-Salem, how they balance being a college freshman and a collegiate athlete, and what it's like to live on the same hall as a super cool podcast host. They wouldn't let us ride their scooters, but other than that we had a great time talking to them. We hope you enjoy it as much as us.

This is Roksanna Keyvan and Prarthna Batra, a pair of freshmen here at Wake Forest. We don't know every person here, we don't know every nook and cranny, and we don't know everything to do or everything there is to know about college at Wake Forest. But we do know that neither does everyone else.
We want this to be the place for all Deacs to come together, hear someone's story, and get to know someone a bit more personally. For our first entry, we spoke to Joe Devoy ('26) and Landon Ellis ('26), who are both spontaneous musicians. You have probably heard them play around campus, but have you heard their real song? In episode nine, Assistant News Editor Emily Toro joins the show to discuss the recent changes to the University Counseling Center’s (UCC) Treatment model. As Emily explains, the UCC’s recently adapted rapid access therapy model will only allow students to schedule same-day appointments on a first-come, first-serve basis. In episode eight our hosts first begin by discussing the panel that was recently held on the importance and implications of renaming buildings. As the university continues to contend with the renaming of the Divinity and Religious Studies Building, the students, faculty and administrators who gathered at the event learned about how names tell stories, but also how those who choose these names bear a privileged power, and thus, responsibility. Next, Cooper and Evan sit down with Dr. Sean Hannah, who served in the army for 26 years and is now a professor of management and holder of the Tylee Wilson Chair at the Wake Forest School of Business. Among other topics, Hannah tells the hosts about his distinction of being among the top percent of researchers worldwide across all sciences based on citations to his research. Lastly, Elisabeth Kuguru joins the show to share how her experiences at Wake Forest differ from the years she spent in Kenya, among other parts of the world.

As our guests explain, the student government will be co-sponsoring the Wake Forest Sexual Misconduct Campus Climate Survey with President Wente’s office. The survey will collect Wake Forest-specific data which the university can then utilize to implement changes that will better address sexual misconduct on campus. Next, the hosts discuss the changes that are being made to the University’s Counseling Center Treatment Model and will become effective starting on November 1st. Lastly, Meredith Prince joins the show and shares the reasons she decided to write an opinion piece titled “Mark Robinson does not belong in a position of power.”

In the first-ever episode of the Old Gold & Black's Sports Podcast, hosts Joseph Doria and Jack McKenney sit down with Donald Stewart, a graduate transfer from Stanford and wide receiver on the Wake Forest Football team. Stewart discusses the historic season the Demon Deacons are having, the off-season preparation (“the Awakening”) that has enabled the offense to thrive, and what it’s going to take for Wake Forest to win an ACC title for the first time since 2006. In episode 5, Cooper and Evan are joined by Maddy Barnick and Lucy Owen - two Wake Forest students who were a part of the team that was given over $100,000 to purchase pieces of art from galleries in New York City that will be added to the Student Union’s Collection of Contemporary Art. The nine new works can be seen hanging in the Hanes Art Gallery in Lower Scales as a part of the Means of Identification exhibition. Next, the hosts discuss the talent show being hosted by the Wake Forest Panhellenic Council to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which will be taking place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Benson 401 on Oct. 18. Lastly, Cooper shares part of his opinion piece about the “Benson piano man."

In episode 4 of the OGB’s Weekly Roundup, hosts Evan and Cooper begin with a discussion of Chase Bagnall Koger’s story about the overhaul of Wake Forest’s network of data systems led by LGBTQ+ Center Director Dr. A.J. Mazaris. As a result of the project, data systems across campus will now better reflect transgender students’ chosen names and pronouns. Afterward, Olivia Wang - an undergraduate student from China - and Professor of Journalism Justin Catanoso join the show. Olivia was struggling during the beginning of the semester, oftentimes felt out of place, and was ready to drop Professor Catanoso’s journalism class. However, an enriching conversation with Dr. Catanoso changed her perspective. As Olivia wrote in her Life Through the Lens Story, “I’ll never forget what Professor Catanoso told me: ‘You are the person who gets the chance to stand in the middle (between two countries) and seek for the truth. Be patient, take your time, and don’t be discouraged.’” Lastly, the hosts discuss Henry Parkhurst's story about mask enforcement across campus.

In episode 3, we begin with a discussion of the release of the 2022 U.S. News & World Report, which ranked Wake Forest No. 28 out of 1,466 bachelor’s degree-granting schools and national universities. Afterward, Paul Whitener joins the show to discuss the WakerSpace, a community ‘makerspace’ located in the back of Lot Q. Mr. Whitener, the Assistant Director of Digital Fabrication and Maker Education, explains to Cooper and Evan the different equipment students can access and the projects which he and his team can assist them in creating. Lastly, Ben Conroy joins the show to speak about his recent story, which explains how mental health services on campus such as the CARE Team are working to address heightened volumes of anxiety during this tumultuous fall semester.
