Today, Tom interviews Jeff Mooney, professor of Old Testament at California Baptist University. Dr. Mooney presented a paper at the Evangelical Theological Society comparing the large amount of laments found in the book of Psalms and the relative lack of laments found in Christian songs sung in churches. Why does this lack of lament matter? Jason and Tom thought this topic demanded our attention.

This is the third of three missions-focused messages originally delivered by Jason DeRouchie in the fall of 2022 at Midwestern Seminary and Spurgeon College’s FUSION Youth Weekend. The title of today’s message is Now Missions. All three of these messages grow out of Colossians 1:24-29. In these verses, Paul provides the foundation for his and the church’s global mission. These messages clarify what fuels the work of Hands to the Plow Ministries, and we hope they will help motivate listeners to be goers or senders for the sake of Christ’s name.

In this third episode in our series through Samuel, Brian Verrett finishes looking back to Genesis. Picking up from our previous podcast, we learn that the Pentateuch does more than just present Adam as a priest, a king, and a failure. The Pentateuch also anticipates that the promised seed of the woman will be a final Adam who will fix what Adam's sin broke. Because of this anticipation in the Pentateuch and other books, 1-2 Samuel hopes for a new Adam and a priest-king who will defeat the serpent.
In this third and final lecture at Dallas Theological Seminary, Jason clarifies from Zephaniah 3:11–20 how Yahweh motivates his charge to wait for him by promising to save his global remnant in a way that satisfies both the Redeemer and those he redeems.
In this second lecture at Dallas Theological Seminary, Jason shares from Zephaniah 2:1–4 and 3:8–10 that God's faithful remnant should patiently pursue Yahweh to avoid punishment and to enjoy satisfying salvation.
In the first of three lectures focused on Zephaniah, Jason provides background to the prophet and a careful look at the beauty and horror of the day of the Lord.
In the second episode of our series on 1 Samuel, Brian Verrett considers Adam and his calling. This episode, like the first episode on 1 Samuel, provides important background information to studying 1 Samuel (and the rest of the Bible!).
In this episode Jason interviews Tom. The conversation begins with a question about becoming a Christian who loves the peoples of the world. How does biblical theology relate to missions? Jason also asks Tom about the beginnings of Hands to the Plow and HTTP's current work training pastors and leaders.
Brian Verrett's The Serpent in Samuel: A Messianic Motif thoroughly explores the author of Samuel's focus on the crushing of the serpent, a theme introduced in Gen 3:15 and built upon in subsequent Scripture.

Jason and Tom respond to a question about the Old Testament saints. Did they know about the Trinity? The podcast begins with an overview of passages from the New Testament proclaiming the deity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Jason and Tom argue a knowledge of Hebrew and Greek isn't necessary in order to faithfully preach/teach/understand God's word. Hard work, however, is always necessary. Use good translations and resources available in your own heart language.
Jason and Tom talk about differences between Kings and Chronicles. The writers of these books were doing very different things. Preachers, teachers, and readers need to be aware of differences between the books and resist the temptation to turn them into one book.

Passages to study in connection with this episode include Exodus 14 (the description of the first exodus event), Exodus 15 (the song celebrating that event), Isaiah 12 (a description of the second exodus), Psalm 118 (not covered in this episode), and Revelation 15. Study notes regarding the use of the "song of Moses" in Revelation may be found on pages 102-104 in our Preacher's Guide to the Book of Revelation: https://handstotheplow.org/wp-content/uploads/Preachers-Guide-Revelation.pdf
Today, Jason DeRouchie and Tom Kelby talk about the Old Testament prophets. How much did they know? Did they know about the books that had been written earlier? How much did they know about the gospel and the Messiah?
