The path to becoming a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) can be a challenging journey. There is such a vast amount of specialized information that you need to know to be successful on your national and state board exams. We will cover a wide variety of information that you can easily review in short sessions. Auditory delivery of information can provide you as the learner with one additional resource. My hope is to help you with some of the basic concepts and challenges that you face as a student in the dental hygiene program and beyond.

This conversation left me considering so much of how I speak and listen to others. As a dental hygienist, we spend so much of our time communicating with others. Sometimes we may miss the most impactful component of communication - listening and confirming that we understand.
This conversation with Julie Leparri was truly enjoyable and inspired me to reconsider how I communicate with others. She is a expert mentor in so many aspects of communication and body language - I encourage you to listen with the intention of understanding her advice.
I am looking forward to her book release later this fall. We chat about many concepts she covers in the book as it is being developed. Her insight and knowledge has inspired me to be a better communicator and challenge some of my own bad habits when working with others.

How do we know if our patients need ortho treatment? When is the best age to send them for an evaluation? Is there a time tht is best? What are the concerns we should be looking for in our patients.
In this episode, we will review some of the assessment parts that are important for the dental hygienist to be looking at in addition to a full occlusal assessment that help us determine the risk level of ortho treatment needs.
We are tasked with supporting a healthy dentition for our ortho patients and need to provide education on the signifiance of proper form and function as well as proper care and routine.

In dental hygiene school you will learn each and every aspect of the ADPIED process of care. You will get into great detail about each component and how to perform them.
In this episode, we cover the medical and dental history process. It is important to understand the WHY behind what you are doing. This episode will cover risk management, quality assurance, and liability associated with the medical and dental records taken on our patients.

So you have started dental hygiene school and have already begun to feel a bit overwhelmed by how much information you have to learn right out of the gate. There is so much information coming at you so fast that it can easily begin to feel like you are lost in the basics.
In this episode, I cover some of the very basics at the beginning of dental hygiene school that begin to make students feel stuck right at the beginning. Give yourself some grace, you have never done this before!
Take action steps to learn things and stick with it. Things will get better and you will get better at learning. Enjoy the opportunity to try something new that you have dreamed about.

Taking an impression requires lots of practice! Dental Materials can have a huge learning curve. I promise you - it gets easier with time! Think of it like baking a cake! If you are messy in the kitchen like me, you will probably be messy with your dental materials.

Listen in as we discuss the research behind career satisfaction and challenges faced by the profession of dental hygiene. The research looks into the areas of the profession that the RDH finds to be both meaningful and challenging.
Linda articulates the research in a way that left me feeling profoundly aware of the work that needs to be done to create a shift for the profession.
Meaningful work is at the core of the profession - the research was eye-opening
Burnout is real - this research goes a long way into discovering the necessary steps we need to take to make the changes that will keep more people following their passion to provide high quality care to patients.
The research also looks at the areas that are going well in the profession and points out things we can build on to continue to grow and thrive.
I loved this conversation and hope you will find it beneficial and motivational for yourself as much as I did.

Life as a dental hygienist is all about blooming where you are planted so you may grow and develop. Take the time to nourish your opportunities and build resilience and grit in any situation. Look for ways to "fail fast and often".

As a dental hygiene student, you will need to develop an understanding of the difference between community dental health as it relates to patient care and what you provide your patients in the opertory.
Scope of knowledge and policy development will be key indicators of future impact on what the dental hygienist will be able to do around the area of prevention in communities. It is a pivotal time in our profession with conversations around workforce. Proposals to expand the function of the dental assistant, and the diminished requirements of the educator in academics.
My commitment is to develop clear pathways for students who wish to expand in the community based programs.

Pharmacology can be a bit confusing when you are first learning about how drugs enter and are processed by the body. It is a very important concept to know well as we move forward with the administration of local anesthesia.

The dental hygiene student is tasked with understanding general pathology to develop a foundational knowledge of the disease etiology, pathogenisis, morphologic changes, and clinical manifestation of disease.

Dental hygiene school can be challenging. It is hard to apply dental hygiene theory to clinical practice and recall all the important information you learn. Connecting the dots on information is especially difficult when you are first learning how to perform an assessment on your patient.

Melissa Alt and I covered so many topics in this episode. Join me as we discuss how to communicate for yourself in a new role, or in a new office with other providers and front desk personnel. It can be challenging, but I know you will discover something of value from this conversation.
Melissa also takes a risk and talks about AUTONOMY. This word can sometimes feel a bit of a risk to talk about, but we should all be discussing it. Patients benefit from a paradigm shift and continued improvement of workforce models. I think we need to put all of our cards on the table and go all in!

Create value in all of the skills that it takes to be an amazing clinical dental hygienist. If you are looking to leave the clinical aspect of dental hygiene - focus on your strengths and skills. This will go a long way in helping you map out a career pivot.
It takes a bit of courage and strength to look into the limits you have put on yourself and question why they are there.
Be......the clinician who is developing strengths as a leader
Do......the things that improve your skills every day
Have.....the career and future you are looking for.
Don't get caught up in the negative conversations and fear the future of our profession. Take the steps to secure your future in any role.

Taking radiographs involves many challenges! There can be som many things that cause issues and problems with obtaining a quality radiograph. There are anatomical issues like tori and palate structure. Then there are things like gag reflexes and gigantic tongues!
There are key strategies you can use to obtain a good radiograph. The truth is - sometimes nothing works! The best you can do is implement all of the strategies and patient compliance opportunities and hope for the best. Sometimes it is just not the day!

Imposter syndrome is a condition where you do not believe that you are enough. That the compliments others give you are untrue. You are not able to hear a compliment from someone and you are afraid that someone will find out that you are not qualified in your role.

This episode is full of reflection and gratitude about my journey into the world of podcasting. I never had podcasting on my radar as a profession. The idea came out of a need to support dental hygiene students. I am a passionate educator, the rest just happened.
I hope sharing my journey into the unknown and taking on the challenge of doing something that was uncomfortable supports you to do the same thing. You are capable of doing hard things that feel difficult. The key is to take the action steps forward and just do it!
Do not compare yourself to others, just focus on you and getting better each and every day. The rest will happen. Little by little, you will see growth and improvement. Those things should provide you with just enough motivation when things get hard - and they will get hard! Anything worth doing comes with resistance.

Dabney joined O’Hehir University in 2017 as an instructor and continues to work part-time in clinical hygiene where she also mentors fellow hygienists. In September 2022, she expanded her expertise by opening her own clinical herbal practice, where she serves clients as an herbalist and health coach with a special focus on women’s health. Dabney is deeply passionate about health and wellness, dedicating her efforts to empowering patients and the community to explore the transformative potential of lifestyle choices and nutrition.
As a committed lifelong learner, Dabney had the desire to earn her BS degree even during her time in hygiene school, achieving her goal by graduating from O’Hehir University in 2015. Her action research paper, “Will my patients notice a difference in their oral health and energy levels if I ask them to give up added sugars for one week?” reflects her dedication to exploring the links between diet and health.
As a dental hygienist and a woman, she understands the phases and cycles of women especially those to work as hygienists. I have been recording podcast episodes for over four years. I have never shared the "Why" behind why I spend the time on the podcast week after week. It is a labor of love to do it. I sometimes wonder if it is worth the effort and if students are truly benefiting from the content.
The truth is, I value the information and the content. I feel as though if it helps anyone - it is worthy of my time and energy.
I will also say that it is scary to share failures and setbacks with others without developing a bit of fear. I believe that we have more in common that we realize. We are guilty of assuming that others have an easier path or a smoother journey to achieve their goals. At this point in my life, I am willing to share the journey without fear of judgement for the sake of showing others that we all fail. We all face challenges. We all have setbacks and have to figure out how to develop resilience and a bit of grit.

There are many obstacles to obtaining quality oral health services for our underserved populations. In my community, I have seen the challenges families face trying to get into a provider. Some of the challenges are things we may overlook.

I read the book Breath by James Nestor and couldn’t help but share the insight from what I discovered in it. I would highly recommend reading it to discover how you breathe yourself. In dental hygiene school, you have to take pharmacology. Drugs are an important component of the medical history and are used to support patients with a variety of conditions. It is important for the dental hygiene student to understand drug pharmacological effects, adverse reactions, side effects, and dental considerations. As providers, we should have an understanding of drug uses and precautions. In this episode, I speak with Rachel Leo Flagg, a professor who has been teaching pharmacology for over a decade to dental hygiene students about barbiturates and benzodiazepines similarities and differences. Rachel helps create an understanding of how to remember important information and the role of the dental hygienist when working with patients who are prescribed these drugs.

The best advice any experienced clinician will give you is to keep good clinical notes. In school, you will learn both the AETN - Assessment, Education, Treatment, and Next visit note style. You will also learn SOAP notes: Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Prognosis notes. Both designs provide the busy clinician with a framework for including all of the most significant and important information for each patient you treat and the services you provide. The Christmas break can seem too short, and full of many things that keep us from actually resting and recovering from the rigors of the fall semester. In this episode, I am going to share a framework that works well to provide you as a clinician with a guide to have a dynamic doctor exam that keeps everything flowing well in an office. Having a system provides you with specific steps to follow in order to create an exam that will be nothing short of fantastic, even when the schedule is tight. When we are successful in doing a comprehensive exam with the patient and the dentist, patients feel as though they are the center of the appointment - which is exactly what we want! In this model, we will discuss ways to make the patient feel included. We can meet the needs of every patient, even when we are behind schedule. The business of dental hygiene can be a little overwhelming to navigate at first. There are many offices that use specific practice management models and track all aspects of the clinical team. You will find that some offices have very structured practice management models, and some do not. Like any other aspect of running a healthcare "business", it is important to understand the "why" behind the business of dental hygiene as you start to navigate these practice models.While you are enrolled in the dental hygiene program, you will be exposed to some of the components of practice management models that are the most commonly used in the dental setting. A morning huddle is one of the most common practice management components used widely in many offices. Our huddle that we perform in the clinic prior to seating our patients provides students with the practice and content that is covered in most huddle settings. While private practice will cover an entire day of schedules - the basic structure and premise are the same. Communication and discussion on the flow of the day is the primary goal of the huddle and to highlight specific features of the appointments.Many parts of the practice management models used are not obvious to those who are not specifically looking. The goal of practice management is to provide the most up-to-date standard of care to patients in the most efficient and cost-effective way. The best way to treat patients successfully is to follow the research of all you have learned on best practices and use the framework that fits the specific office where you are employed. Let's take a look at the considerations for care and our role as a dental hygienist in the prevention of disease.
