Our emotions can cause a roller-coaster of feelings and if they are not managed effectively they can cause a lot of problems. As a wise and effective leader or manager, it’s very important to be mindful of how you are feeling and how to appropriately manage your emotions. If we don’t manage our emotions we lose access to our Prefrontal Cortex, the part of our brain that helps us understand, memorise, recall, make decisions and inhibit basic urges - this makes us less intelligent. This short 150-second video gives three simple tips for managing your emotions and becoming an even more effective leader and manager. Food for Thought: ❓How broad is your emotional vocabulary? ❓How good are you at reframing your emotions? I look forward to seeing your thoughts and comments about this effect. Managing emotions is all about improving your self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Our brains are fundamentally lazy. They are designed to conserve energy. This makes it very easy to make assumptions and jump to conclusions.
There are always two sides to every story and as a leader or manager is it very important to check your assumptions and explore why other people see things very differently to you.
A useful model for doing this is the Ladder of Inference.
This short video gives a quick overview of the model and how you can use it to check your thinking and the thinking of others.
Food for Thought: ❓What assumptions are you making about the people you work with? ❓How can regular use of this model help you become a better leader?

Humans are hard-wired for taking advantage of immediate rewards as a survival strategy. This means that we feel rewards in the future are less valuable than the prospect of immediate gratification.
Neuroscientists call this Temporal Discounting.

Could this be damaging your business?
Our brains are always jumping to conclusions about the behaviour of others and the Fundamental Attribution Error is one of the many cognitive biases that can damage relationships by undermining trust, teamwork and collaboration.
Cognitive biases are hardwired automatic responses that helped our ancestors survive back when life was very precarious for humans. But in today’s complex world, where we all have many interdependent relationships with lots of different people these biases can get in the way and damage trust and cooperation.
As leaders and managers it is important to understand these biases so we can counter them and prevent them from harming trust and productivity.
Watch this video and learn about the Fundamental Attribution Error in just 150 seconds!
Food for Thought:
❓Where are you making Fundamental Attribution Errors?
❓How might your behaviour be creating Fundamental Attribution Errors in your people, peers or customers?
❓What do you need to do more of in order to avoid these errors?

Back in 1908 two scientists popularised the concept of the impact of pressure on performance.
We all have a sweet spot where we achieve optimal performance, but that spot may be different for different people.
If we are out of the sweet spot, we may underperform due to a lack of pressure or because we have more than we can cope with.
Food for Thought:
❓Where are you currently on the performance curve?
❓Where are your team members and how well are you managing the pressure for them?

How well are you managing your stress bucket?
It’s easy to notice when others are stressed, but it can be difficult to identify our own levels of stress because it tends to creep up on us and then one little thing can create an outburst or other stress response.
We all have a stress bucket, but they tend to be different sizes so therefore have different levels of capacity. This short video explores this concept and what you can do to increase the capacity of your stress bucket.
Food for Thought:
❓How full is your stress bucket?
❓What can you do to release some of the stress?

Are you trapped in your Comfort Zone?
It is quite common to get trapped in a comfort zone. It happens when we make the only alternative to the comfort zone the Fear Zone or the Danger Zone.
This makes the thought of stepping out of our comfort zone very uncomfortable, so we avoid it.
But there is an alternative zone to step into which creates very different feelings. This makes it far easier to step out of our comfort zone and expand our skills, knowledge and influence.
Check out this video to discover what it is.

Are you being compassionate enough for your people while holding them to account for their performance?
There is a paradox when it comes to guiding people to be their best.

Leaders are often isolated from feedback about their performance and their behaviour due to their position. It takes courage to give feedback to a leader or manager especially if they take it very personally or become defensive.
Are you overly self-critical?
Or perhaps unintentionally defensive?
There is a paradox when it comes to Self Actualisation and it requires a delicate balance of two traits critical to leadership success. When we get the balance right we make it easy for others to give us feedback and this means we can make better decisions and continuously improve our performance.

In today’s episode, we will be discussing ‘Understanding Empathy’. It’s a really critical part of success in today’s complex environment. Both at work and in our personal lives. And, it’s really interesting that even Darwin said, “It’s an evolutionary process that has helped humans to become even more effective”.

This is a simple 20-minute deep relaxation exercise using the Body Scan technique.
Regular use of these exercises will provide you with the opportunity to develop a very powerful mindfulness and deep relaxation routine. It is best to use headphones or earbuds and ensure that you are sitting comfortably in a place where you will not be disturbed. A quiet room with speakers will also work well.
*For obvious reasons do not listen to these whilst driving or operating dangerous machinery.
If you have any questions about your relaxation practice, or if you would like to discuss leadership coaching or development please contact me at david@talent4performance.co.uk.
I am confident that you will find these introductory meditations extremely valuable because once you have begun to explore the concept of mindfulness and create a regular practice, you will find your effectiveness as a leader and manager can improve way beyond what you thought was possible.
Do let me know how you get on!
With kind regards,
David

In today’s episode, we will be discussing the SCARF Model developed by Dr. David Rock and his team at the NeuroLeadership Institute. It is a useful model to remember the five primary threats and rewards that drive our behaviour.
By understanding the five elements of the model it can help to reduce and dampen your stress response and give you some pointers to create a reward response. This means you will be in a better position to use your prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain you rely on in order to be able to understand, memorise, recall, make decisions and inhibit unwanted behaviours.
