Welcome to The BroncCast! The official Cal Poly Pomona athletics podcast. Hosted by Assistant Athletics Director for Communications Tyler Lobe, The BroncCast will feature your favorite Broncos coaches, student-athletes, department staff members and even some outside guests to talk anything from sports, academics, life in general, and issues facing our world today. Most importantly, we hope to have a little bit of fun with this, so tune in each week for new episodes of The BroncCast!
In the fourth episode of Season 2 of The BroncCast, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications Tyler Lobe sits down with two student-athletes from the CPP men’s soccer team -- senior Jordan Aldama and junior Jerry Ramirez. We discuss the success the men’s soccer team is having so far this season, highlight a couple CCAA Player of the Week awards earned by Jerry this season, chat about the historic career Jordan is having, get into what it takes to be a student first, athlete second, talk about grilling and baby oil, then finish it off with some trivia to see how well Jordan and Jerry know their own teammates.
This episode also highlights Innovation Brew Works on the Cal Poly Pomona campus. Innovation Brew Works is a professionally managed café and brewery, but also serves as a learn-by-doing brewery laboratory for CPP students, alumni, faculty and the general public. Echoing the learn-by-doing philosophy of Cal Poly Pomona and corresponding with the brewery’s official tagline “Crafting an Education”, students acquire hands-on experience with brewing and brewpub operations.
Innovation Brew Works is open seven days a week. They also host Bingo on Tuesday nights and Trivia on Thursday nights. Both begin at 6:00 pm, they are open to all ages and are free to play! In the third episode of Season 2 of The BroncCast, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications Tyler Lobe sits down with three student-athletes from the CPP women’s soccer team -- senior Allyssa Larkin and juniors Nicolle Villarreal and Gillian Ortin. We discuss the student-athlete balance of athletics and academics, relive a couple SportsCenter Top 10 worthy highlights, talk about favorite TV shows and movies, reveal some hidden flag football talent, and we wrap it up with some trivia to see how well Allyssa, Nicolle and Gillian know their own teammates.

In the second episode of Season 2 of The BroncCast, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications Tyler Lobe sits down with men’s soccer freshman Max Laguna, women’s soccer graduate student Emma Barrow, women’s cross country senior Samantha Aguilar, men’s cross country freshman Leandro Candray and volleyball sophomore Jazmyn Wheeler. We discuss their seasons through the first couple of weeks of action, talk about the hit TV show Outer Banks with a couple of my guests, get into the Lionel Messi transfer from Barcelona, why gothic horror movies are at the top of someone’s list, and we also discuss a special performance at Carnegie Hall by one of our talented Broncos.

In the first episode of Season 2 of The BroncCast, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications Tyler Lobe sits down with CPP volleyball sophomores Kaitlan Tucker and Daisy Duke to talk about their perfect 3-0 start to the season, a special award earned by one of them this week, how it's going from doing nothing last year to the grind of double-days and game day prep, how different school is today as compared to pre-pandemic, and of course, Tyler couldn’t help but make reference to a popular TV show from the early 1980s.

In Episode #12 of The BroncCast, we sit down with 2020-21 Cal Poly Pomona Student-Athlete Advisory Committee executive board members Nia Vance (women's track and field), Ryan Fields (men's track and field), Ayana Fields (women's track and field) and Jessica Llamas (women's soccer). We discuss all things SAAC, including what the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is and how they operate as an on-campus student group that represents Cal Poly Pomona, how other student-athletes can get involved to make their voices heard, highlight some upcoming SAAC-sponsored events and initiatives, find out what Ayana does that makes her look like a rock, then we get into the March Madness spirit with a little bit of Division I mascot trivia.

In Episode #11 of The BroncCast, we sit down with Assistant Athletics Directors Scott Tsuji, Pam Donnelly, Jenny Heimstead, Mike Farrell and Sarah Macias to discuss how we continue to work virtually during these unprecedented times to serve our student-athletes, we revisit the most memorable moments that our incredible teams and student-athletes have given us throughout the years, why the word Broncos and the word family is often used together around here, and after a lopsided trivia battle of NCAA Division II mascots, we offer some words of encouragement in these trying times.

In Episode #10 of The BroncCast, we sit down with head track and field coach Chris Bradford, seniors Kyle Lawson and Imani Williams and sophomore Ayana Fields to revisit the week that COVID-19 canceled all NCAA competition, including Indoor Track Nationals in Alabama, chat about how student-athletes and coaches mentally and physically prepare for meets, why the pandemic has made it tougher on learning in a virtual environment, all before we learn that state capital trivia doesn’t come easy to everybody.

In Episode #9 of The BroncCast, we sit down with CPP head baseball coach Randy Betten, senior first baseman Brennan McKenzie and sophomore pitcher Reese Stevens to recap the shortened 2020 spring season, discuss the recent renovations of the new-look Scolinos Field, get Coach Betten’s thoughts on three of his former players making it to the Big Leagues in recent years, then play a little movie trivia at the end.

Episode #8 of The BroncCast is another special episode as we feature the true celebrities and unsung heroes of our athletics department, the Cal Poly Pomona Sports Performance staff. I sit down with Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Performance Ruem Malasarn, Assistant Athletic Trainers Lauren Salas and Albert Torres and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Chase Sanders. We discuss the transformation of the CPP sports performance office during Ruem’s 20-year tenure on campus, how they work closely with the student-athletes to make sure they are taken care of, both physically and mentally, what measures are being taken to keep everyone safe if and when we return-to-play, and we play a little trivia to wrap it up at the end, only to find out that someone watches a little too much television and wins a prize for it.

Episode #7 of The BroncCast is a special one as we welcome the three individuals that make things run at the California Collegiate Athletic Association, or more widely known as the CCAA. We sit down with Commissioner Mitch Cox, Associate Commissioner for Compliance & Internal Operations Carol Rivera, and the Director of Communications Jessica Lantz to discuss all things CCAA. We chat about what the current status is with regards to return-to-play in the spring, how the conference office operates with just three full-time staff members, it is Officials Appreciation Week and we give appreciation where appreciation is due, touch on the Name, Image and Likeness proposal from the NCAA, the upcoming changes to the CCAA Network, why to choose Division II over Division I or Division III, and we wrap it up with a promo of Tuesday night's Bachelorette premiere on ABC. Oh, and we find out about the childhood acting career of Commissioner Cox.
