Ahoy cryptic cuties! This week we come bearing tales of two voyages that suddenly went very wrong. Kelsey covers the disappearance of Annette Mizener, a passenger aboard a carnival cruise in 2004 who mysteriously went overboard.

Alanna wraps things up with the Hawks, a lovely retired couple who just wanted to sell their yacht so they could spend more time with their grandchildren, a decision that would end up costing them everything.

Stay safe if you find yourself out on the open ocean (maybe bring a flare gun and a lifejacket?) and until next time keep it cryptic.

Sometimes it's a loss of income and prosperity, othertimes, something more destructive and very final. Whether the town died out, pardon the pun, or came to a catastrophic end, it's an tale worth telling and we say, put on your safety goggles and your hiking boots!

Hey cryptic cuties, you know we had to take advantage of the month of May to cover some airplane crimes.

Kelsey tells the story of Japan Air Lines Flight 123, when a typical trip turns into a fight to keep an uncontrollable plane in the air and save the lives of hundreds aboard. Alanna closes out the ep with Canadian Airlines Flight 108, and how investigations into its demise lead to a cowardly husband and his crazy plot to escape his life.

It's a wild ride this week, if your oxygen mask deploys make sure you put it on yourself first before helping others, and until next time, keep it cryptic!

This week, we had fun finding some other amazing animals, they may not all be psychic wonder horses, but damn are they wonderful!!

Kelsey keeps us up with the Koko shenanigans, you know like the Kardashians? Ok it's a stretch, but Koko reaches new heights in communication and very human traits, like ...being horny?? She's an enigma, like all of us!

To cap it off, Alanna tells some war stories of animal heros, like Unsinkable Sam, and two very, very good doggos.

Kicking things off, Kelsey dives into a robbery that takes a surprising turn when the thieves return some of the items to prove they were the real robbers. Ok, we could have called this episode a pseudoscience and a psychic horse, but I liked the alliteration so there we are. We love any fringe science, powerwe don't quite understand and stories about wild history with a dash of animal hijinks. This one has it all!So grab your furry friends and a nice apple for two wild rides!Kelsey covered the history of lie detector tests and their rise and fall in the courts and what we think of them today. We pick apart the science from the not- so science parts of the polygraph machine. And Alanna comes in clutch with a 1920's story of a mind-reading mare from Richmond, Virginia. Could her spot-on predictions be truly a sixth sense? We sure wish we had her inside sport's knowledge, maybe she talked to the racehorses and got the edge...

Hope you enjoy, and, hey(or should I say neigh?), let us know, we aren't psychic! So drop us a rating and refer a friend! Keep it Cryptic!

(Hey Cryptic Cuties, so sorry this is out a little late, it was my birthday yesterday and I did not get my editing done. I know I'm a bad girl, ironically we talk about late episodes at the end of the recording, how odd!! Hope you forgive me my sins lol)

Happy Freaky Friday, let's see how well you know your fairies! But be warned, most are not teacup-sized or full of pure goodness and pixie dust! Don't worry, we get to the pixies too.

Kelsey teaches an overview of the motley crew of fey-type creatures in New Zealand! Cliff notes: some are big and very hairy indeed! Not all look like Legolas, oh no!

Alanna's fairy feature starts with chicken-riding creatures and gets weirder as we go along! Sort of an A-Z of our favorite finds in fairy lore across the world. So get out your glitter and let's talk f*cked up fairies!

Kelsey details how multiple witnesses disappeared just before they could testify against one very dangerous man, it's crazy just how many crimes he got away with. What's up cryptic cuties? Welcome to what was planned as Kelsey's birthday ep, (but she went to Los Angeles instead) so here it is. Alanna lightens the mood with a very wild and entertaining tale of a prank that goes beyond anything you may have heard before. Listen to find out how 2 men's bet effected a whole town.

After a brief bit of book talk, the gals put on their scrubs for some insane stories of mysterious medical mishaps. Which may be putting it too mildly...

Kelsey kicks us off as usual, with a wild case of a Minnesota woman who defied doctors and all logic by surviving a sub-zero night spent outside. Having just barely survived our own polar vortex, ya darn tootin' this one shook us!

Then Alanna leaves us with the strange story of Brazil's very own so called "Melting Man". Which got us asking ourselves if sometimes going to a big party isn't a life-saver? It's a thinker.

You guys, this episode is right out of this world(and may sound vageuly liek a 90's talk show, we're aware!)!

Originally planned as part of our ET episode 106: A close Encounter of The Canadian Kind, it was cut due to length. And by that I mean, damn can we (I mean me, who are we kidding) talk our asses off sometimes!

So it has been in the Illuminaughty/ Patreon vaults until now, when alas we didn't get a new one out to you in time, we decided to release it.

Apologies, friends, and hope this sneak peek behind the Patreon curtain can curtail your Castles and Cryptids Cravings for now!

What's it about? Why Akon the alien and his earth lover Elizabeth of course! If you've ever wondered what the alien D is like, this is the episode for you! and also 'cause y'know extraterrestrial enlightenment and stuff. Someone has to know more than we do!

Thanks for listening and catch you next week, keep it cryptic!

Happy 2024 cryptic cuties! We hope you missed us as much as we missed you. This week we have two interesting cases for you, starting with the disappearances of two young friends who went missing after attending a huge New Year's party. Did police catch the right person in the end, or is there an innocent man behind bars? Alanna wraps things up with the tragic and brutal deaths of the Petit family, who were targeted and suffered for hours at the hands of their attackers. Welcome to our 2nd last ep of 2023, and the last true crime ep of the year! (insert confetti cannons and air horns here) For this weeks ep we each chose cases where a person decided to kill the rest of their family members, depressing we know...

Kelsey tells the story of the Fisher family, a seemingly normal family with a few problems from the outside, and even more on the inside. Friends and coworkers are shocked after a sudden explosion rips through the neighbourhood, bringing about The Fall of the House of Fisher (see what we did there, we love you Mike Flanagan)

Alanna shares the story of 2 great pro wrestlers, Chris and Nancy Benoit. While the pair may have started as a storyline, they fell for real and started a life together. Years later their love story comes to a tragic conclusion that no one saw coming.

It's a dark ep for sure, but catch us next week for our last ep of the year (shameless patreon plug, where we have dozens more eps and videos!)

Magic Mirror on the Wall, who has the strangest tale of all? If you are anything like us, you like hearing odd and bizarre fairy tales and creepy "children's" stories! They are often short with simple characters and trumped up tropes- stepmothers are always evil! The poor boy turn hero and marries the princess, or prince! Short dude has long name like Rumpelstiltskin!

Kelsey and Alanna curated a short list of strange stories for round one of what's sure to be a fun series we can keep coming back to! Just listen to these titillating titles:

The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs

The Louse and The Flea

The Red Shoes

The Bird, The Mouse and The Sausage

It felt like forever since we did an international true crime ep, so this week we decided to cover 2 unsettling cases all the way from Kenya! (shout out to our Kenyan listeners). Kelsey kicks things off with the details of the Kenyan Starvation Cult, this recent and ongoing case has touched hundreds of families across Kenya.

Alanna overs the strange death of Mercy Chepkosgei Keino, whose death has been attributed to a hit and run. But this case may be more than it seems, as the events leading up to Mercy's death involve interesting CCTV footage (available on our website) from a house party. Is Mercy's death simply a hit and run, or is this a cover-up for something much more sinister?

Kelsey kicks things off with the Karpis-Barker gang, known for robbing banks and later for kidnappings, these criminals gained a lot of attention for their crimes. Everything came to an end when they chose the wrong person to target, someone who had a few friends in some very high places. Alanna gives us the run down an a handful of some other notorious inmates, including a man who liked birds and a few men who spent a long time working on their way off the island. We hope you enjoy part 1, and make sure to come back next week as we will be covering some of the ghosts that walk the halls of Alcatraz, one of the most haunted places in the world!

After cutting out 10 hours of cat cajoling, we have a short and neat episode about unexplained spheres, ghostly lights in the sky and other random oddities! Some subjects just can't be shoved into one category, or explained easily away. Unless you say its always aliens, which to be fair it probably is.

Kelsey covers one of the lesser known phantom lights phenomenon of the USA, the Gurdon light. Why do these hovering lights seem to show up in places all over the country? Where's Canada's mystery lights? Basically what the hell is going on? We theorize what's causing the lights and why they are probably not headlights!

Then Alanna takes us to the swingin' seventies and the mystery of the Betz sphere. Go figure that a Floridaman should be the one to find a mysterious smooth metal orb in their yard, no explanation. More strange still, was what it started doing once they took it into the house....

Which all prompts a look at some stone spheres around the world, and what they might have in common with their mysterious metal cousin.

Alanna tells the senseless murder of Laurie Show, who got caught up in the revenge plot of 3 teenagers, who became obsessed with making Laurie pay for her alleged crimes. Happy spook-tober everyone, for this ep we decided to tell some more occult related true crime cases. Kelsey tries to answer a 80 year old question, who put Bella down the Wych Elm? A case full of mysteries and unanswered questions, and also some wild theories; this case ties in to one Alanna covered way back in ep 22, so go listen to that one if you haven't before, because its great. Alanna closes the ep with a series of murders that are suspected to have been committed by a serial killer who was active during the 1960's and into the 70's. Is it some sort of wild conspiracy, or the trail left behind by a unidentified madman who may still be alive today? Catch up with you all next week cryptic cuties, and happy listening!Tags: Occult Murders, Occult True Crime, Who put Bella in the Wych Elm, Astrological Murders

Hey Hey, it's high time for another Haunted AF episode, cryptic cuties! A very low haunted episode, actually, as we bring you the haunted underground!

Paris catacombs, move over you have had your time to shine, now it's time for the new haunts on the block! Have you heard of the Indiana catacombs? A labyrinthic network lying silently below the streets of Indianapolis? Well, if you haven't, Kelsey takes us on a tour of the dark passageways without ever leaving our comfy homes. Next stop, Ghost Station, NYC! the last stop on the left, don't get off, whatever you do....

Heading across the Atlantic we shall next visit historic Edinburgh, the city that's haunted AF. But not just the castles, the Edinburgh vaults are also a dank, dreary and creepy place to stoop into. Listen to see why they are still such a hotspot for paranormal activity, and maybe even cursed. Can't forget our final stop at the Capuchin Crypts, a Roman ossuary and macabre mosaic of skeletons and mummies.

Throw in a few side-stories and senior moments as we struggle to remember that bird's name that stole the crime scene knife that one time? (It's not Stabby the Crow, he's Canuck the Crow, I looked it up later, all good :) And that's our first episode of October! Happy Haunting!!

Don't forget to drop a rating wherever you listen! Come on, you're already in the show notes!! :)

In honor of Truth & Reconciliation Day 2023, we decided to shine a light on some cases of missing and murdered indigenous females and 2-spirit identifying people. We have a horrible history in Canada of crushing down the native cultures of our land, and it's only in recent years that Canada has begun trying to right those wrongs. One of the biggest dangers facing indigenous and First Nations females today is violence and death, especially in vulnerable communities and areas.

Kelsey takes us a few provinces over to Winnipeg, Manitoba where many women have gone missing and have later been found in local landfills. This makes it extra hard for investigators to recover the remains and bring closure to the families. But the biggest question remains, are they, and we, doing enough?

Alanna brings us back west to British Columbia and it's infamous Highway of Tears. This stretch of road runs red with the blood of the women abducted while travelling to neighboring communities. Just trying to visit family turns into a deadly game when walking this highway, and it's difficult to pin down the exact number of victims, as well as find the perpetrators.

Hopefully the more we speak out about the atrocities committed in our own proverbial backyards, the less they will get away with this shit.

Near death experiences. Are they as life-changing as TV would have us believe? Does everyone that comes close to their demise see a bright light or do they simply survive and live to fight another day?

We explore some famous and lesser known brushes with death, as well as some stories of survival to surpass all odds. Meet the man who spent the longest at sea on a tiny boat (over a year!) and find out which of the Man in Black, Johnny Cash's animals that almost gutted him out of pure heartbreak. Then hear how far back near death experiences have been recorded, and how close one can come to being taken too soon, by complete accident. Hope you have a unique name!! :)

Does this ep seem familiar? Well that's because we touched on it a bit with our special Dexter themed ep a long time ago, over 100 eps ago! Can you believe it? This week we revisit the idea by exploring killers who were inspired by others to commit terrible and senseless crimes. Kelsey covers the strange investigation into a shooter who terrorized New York City for many years, keeping its police and citizens on high alert night after night. Alanna switches it up and shares the tale of two teenagers who did some drugs and decided to watch the same movie on repeat for hours, leading them to try and recreate the events in the film. It's a wild ep this week, so be prepared. We hope you enjoy!

Ahoy-hoy cryptic mateys, we have sailed back into a podcast harbour near you! That's harbour with a U cause we speak the Queen's English here in Canadaland, dontcha know? It's fitting that Alanna just returned home from the Maritimes in Atlantic Canada, since we are hitting you with more maritime mysteries! We love the ocean, but she scares us a little too, gotta respect that shit, you know what we mean?? :)Kelsey takes us aboard the ship known as the Joyita, whose voyage proved less than joyful at its end. There were several prominent people on board including a doctor who was on his way to perform an amputation on a patient far away. But the vessel and its supplies would never make it to it destination. She takes us through the clues we do have and then we speculate wildly, of course.Alanna has an unsolved mystery that's shore to titillate and intrigue you! On the craggy cliffs of coastal Scotland, three lighthouse keepers go missing at the turn of the century. Was it the storm come to claim them, foul play or something even more sinister? Most of us can agree that the deep ocean can be scary as hell. There's even a specific word for the phobia of large underwater creatures or objects that I bet lots of us have- it's called megalohydrothalassophobia. But what's even scarier than the water itself, we ask? It's always the bad people who make this such a frightening place to be. Come hop on our lifeboat as we plunge into International waters! We could say you need to hear Kelsey's case like you need a hole in the hull! at least that's what the expression should be after hearing this story. Suspicious holes, coins of silver, tragedy at sea, this case has it all- except for an answer to what happened to Isabella Hellmann. The only one who did know something, the husband, wasn't saying anything.

Alanna's case is just as mystifying, if not more so. There's several players involved, but the main characters were on a honeymoon just like Kelsey's couple, and it turned into a dark cocktail of drinking, discord, and dark intentions. The case of George Smith IV is a mind-boggling web of witness statements, secret videos and the death of one half of this promising young couple, just starting out on their lives together. One thing is for sure, when it comes to law and order, the high seas are sometimes a hard, dangerous place to be.

Hey everyone, for this weeks episode we dove into 2 more cases of bizarre Government conspiracies. Kelsey covers a dark spot in Canada's history, a time when the fear of spies and communists led the Government to funnel thousands into a "Gaydar" to better weed out any Homosexual workers. Targeting and investigating thousands of government, RCMP and Military employees. Alanna shares the story of Project Montauk; a strange tale of underground superheroes and some of the tests they endured. If this sounds familiar, is has inspired multiple tv shows including a very popular Netflix show. Can you guess which one? We hope you enjoy, until next time, keep it cryptic!

Hey Cryptic Cuties it's crime time again! Remember when Kelsey covered the infamous Moors Murders way back in Episode 22? Neither do we at this point, really! So it's about time for another case of couples who kill (or Moor Murders if you will :P) Kelsey kicks it off with a typically dark case of course, notorious killers Alton Coleman and Debra Brown. They were not your typical serial killers, they picked victims who were known as pillars of the community, often asking for their help as a ruse to gain their trust. They also had a habit of leaving tokens or items from previous victims with newer victims bodies. Alanna closes it out with the Lonely Hearts Killers, several book tangents and pauses for cat insanity. We're sorry, we love reading and Kelsey's cat is probably possessed by some minor demon, we cut most of his attack on Kelsey's ankles out. Raymond Martinez Fernandez hooked up with Martha Beck, abandoned all their kids and embarked on a life conning and eventually killing wealthy women. They were the swindlers before there was even Tinder. Or as Alanna kept saying it Tindler Swindler. It's a tongue twister, try it!! It's ep 111 so we just had to cover numerology, it was a sign. Kelsey shares a brief history of Numerology, or Arithmancy as it was once called. Everything from onomancy, to birthday numbers and life path numbers, we have a lot to discuss (and calculate). Alanna redeems herself with a deep dive into Angel Numbers (briefly mentioned in our 86th ep). If you find that every time you look at the clock it's 11:11, or 12:34, listen closely because this ep is for you. So grab a pencil and some paper and follow along as we learn a little more about ourselves through the wonderful world of numerology. We hope you enjoy!

We start the episode off in true Castles & Cryptids fashion- lots of cat craziness and pet talk, interrupted by sounds of Gordo playing fetch with his bottle cap. Tell us- what's wrong with your pet? Meaning what crazy weirdo things do they do that's unique to them? Please tell us, we're dying to know!!

Kelsey breaks down the killing of Marta Russo, but the one major thing this case lacks- is a motive!? Struck down in broad daylight on campus, the death was a shock to the nation. We take you through the various theories- including conspiracies!

Then we take a sharp turn into the life and crimes of Charles Ponzi- that's right, father of the Ponzi scheme. Ever heard of him? Well, we took a look into the scam, the man, and how it's still alive and well today, or it's offshoots and copycats at least... ..

Alanna wraps up the ep by teaching us all about the dragons featured in Dungeons & Dragons, what their attacks are and how to use them. We've decided to feature more missing persons and unsolved cases on the pod, to help highlight and bring attention to more cases that could be solved someday. There's unfortunately too many to choose from. Kelsey brings us the tale of Diane Augat, who went missing quite quietly in 1998. Strange clues and traces of her are the only things that have ever been found, and theories include foul play. Alanna covered the disappearance of Keith Reinhard, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his last hike. He was not the only man to never return from Pendleton Mountain, and certainly not the first to go missing in a deeply wooded or National Park area. Could some of these deaths and disappearances be connected? If you have any info on Diane's disappearance, you can call Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-TIPS. Some still call this case the best documented UFO sighting ever to happen in Canada, and it occurred way back in the 60's at a place called Falcon Lake, Manitoba.

Stefan Michalak was an industrial mechanic and amateur geologist who was exploring around the lake east of Winnipeg when he noticed a gaggle of geese abruptly take off, honking madly. Although Stefan was an educated and multi-lingual man, he was not at all prepared for the meeting that was about to take place, indeed, likely no one would be....

PLEASE NOTE: We did take a detour from our regular scheduled programming this week, as you may have noticed. Medical malpractice, malicious intent, negligence and straight up murder, we cover it all in this weeks episode. Alanna switches things up and goes first with a listicle of scary nightmare inducing medical accidents?? that have resulted is quite a number of lawsuits. We cut the list in two, so join our patreon to hear the rest (you know you wanna). Kelsey closes out the episode with the story of an "angel of death" nurse; btw we both hate that name. With dozens of patients killed in a little over a year, this serial killer is credited with the most killings in Germany since WWll. Buckle up for this heart wrenching episode, and make sure you double, triple check those hospital forms before you get put under. Happy listening. Leprechauns! So much more than just a 90's movie starring Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston. What do you know about the mythical little men? Why the hell do they keep their gold at the end of the rainbow?? And what about some of those other little mythical dudes that are leprechaun-adjacent? Kelsey kicks it off with answers to these questions, and teaches us about the origins of St. Patrick's day too! It's edutainment at it's finest. To close it out, Alanna goes over some of the Irish folklore creatures that you may not have heard of, like the Pooka/Puca, who says the kinda things to you that'll make you poopa your pants! Followed up by a few more folk, like the banshee. You probably have heard of this wailing, harbinger of death, but might not know much more about this shrieking spirit....Ireland, we love you and all your crazy stories! Now let's go have some cabbage and champ. Keep it cryptic and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Our international true crime series continues this week as we dive into 2 ( or maybe even 3) cases of murder in Scotland. First, Kelsey shares the extremely angering World's End Murders, the tragic death of 2 girls at the hands of a man who had a shockingly long wrap sheet. We discuss what role bad character evidence and the laws of double jeopardy play at trial, and how there may always be exceptions to a rule. Alanna closes out the ep with a massacre from medieval times that will give you total Red Wedding vibes (shout out to GOT fans!), along with a reading from a very special book. We hope you enjoy the ep, and until next time, keep it cryptic.

Hi and Hej hej(hey hey)! It's time for Swedish folklore, let's gooo!! We've barely grazed the surface on any Scandinavian or Norse mythology, so for this one, we're keeping it simpler with tales straight outta Sweden.  From the Aurora borealis and its associations, to the Lindworm/Lindwurm-um, yikes, to the Vittra, we've got something almost from A-Z! Kelsey takes on the Lindwurm, a fearsome beast from below that is sure to remind you of one movie or another, and all it's other incarnations. Followed up with a second course full of Northern Lights myths and legends, sure to dazzle and delight. Alanna caps it off with a handful of names like the Nack, a nude dude that hangs out in the river and might drown you, to be confirmed, and the Vittra who may sound familiar if you've listened to episode 91! But they are a little different, because they have invisible cows this time. So lasso up your headphones for an eclectic episode of Sweden's best lore and legends!

This week we explored two very different cases of arson. Kelsey covers the Pillow Pyro, who set dozens of fires in fabric stores that ultimately led to the deaths of four people. The case becomes even more complicated when the culprit attempts to profit from the fires by blurring the line between fact and fiction. Alanna shares the story of a devastating fire at The Happy Land Club. With a single staircase as the only exit, unsuspecting partiers were left fighting for their lives against the flames. We hope you make it all the way through the ep, it's a sad one. Thanks for listening. Tags: Arson, The Pillow Pyro, The Happy Land Club Firelinktr.ee/castlesandcryptids  Website: castlesandcryptidspod.squarespace.com

We wouldn't be who we are today without cryptid stories!! This time we rounded up some kooky, weird and claw-some creatures that can be found in rather chilly climates.  Kelsey brings the gnome-guys home with the Barbegazi, who give off some Hobbit vibes and are found in France and Switzerland. Then the Nisse, aka the Tomte, who are a cryptid of many names! Not to be confused with Nessie, slightly different! think more helpful on the farm....less plesiosaur.  To top it off, Alanna had to highlight a combo cryptid called Batsquatch, who might be a cousin to Mothman?? Plus a Beaver Eater from up north and a cryptid   connection of Cyclopian eyes?? Unintentionally Cyclopian is our new band name, it's canon. Keep it cryptic, friends!

Welcome to part 2 of our hostage crisis episodes. This week Alanna takes a deep dive into the origins of the term Stockholm Syndrome. What starts as a bizarre bank robbery transitions into a hard situation for police to handle when hostages begin to take the side of the criminals. Is it a real thing, or has the term been applied a few too many times? We discuss this and more in the exciting conclusion for one of our wildest ep topics yet. Happy listening!

Have you heard about the hostage situation that took place in 1988 in Gladbeck, Germany? If not, buckle up, you are in for a very wild ride! One that the hostages could probably never have imagined finding themselves in. The criminals attempt to rob a branch of the Deutsch bank in Gladbeck,  North-Rhine Westphalia, and the resulting run from the bank turns into sort of a mashup of Speed meets Taken...only there's no Liam Neeson in sight to save them. Tragic and terrifying, the situation played out almost like a Hollywood movie. In fact, the media covered every minute in great detail, prompting questions and reformed laws on how hostage situations are covered and handled by reporters in the future.....

We are seeing double this week as we cover two cases of very strangely behaved twins. Kelsey covers the Spahalski twins, Stephen & Robert, who seem to share more than just genes with each other. Then, Alanna walks us through the bizarre story of Ursula & Sabina Eriksson, who suddenly began acting strange and caused a huge scene on a highway, before one of them eventually murdered someone. At what point does twin telepathy go too far, and can one twin's illness or murderous impulses be caught by the other? We explore these questions and more during this week's ep. Happy Listening!

This week we time travel back to the 1800's to bring you some vintage crimes, all in honor of Kelsey's birthday! This one goes out to all the Capricorns out there! For Kelsey's birthday wish she covered H.H. Holmes, a murderer wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in a lot of misleading media coverage. But of course, when you use names like the Murder Hotel or Holmes Horror Castle, things are bound to get blown out of proportion.. so how well do you really know Herman Webster Mudgett? We step forward in time a bit to the 1920's to talk about the Hex Hollow murder in Pennsylvania. This harkens back to our previous episode because the practitioners of an old sort of folk magic in this region believed strongly in curses. And would do almost anything to get rid of one...Alanna tells us the dark tale of how one man's life ended because of a curse, poor Nelson Rehmeyer. And he had no way to ever see it coming.....

Alanna closes out the last ep of 2022 with two interesting Yule Witches, Frau Perchta and Befana, neither one you would want to meet if you have been naughty instead of nice this year. Life imitates art, they say, so it's no surprise that some crimes cases actually have twist endings or red herrings. Sometimes we just really have no idea what's going on, onscreen or in our own home...Or who to suspect.  Kelsey takes on the crazy case of Daniel LaPlante and his reign of terror in Massachusetts. He was an unlikely suspect for committing such a crime spree, and proved to be more evasive than anyone had guessed. To cap it off we have another brutal attack with the story of Ryan Waller and Heather Quan. Police had a tough time figuring out what happened in their home on Christmas day in 2006, and the fallout would turn out to be just as tragic as the main event.

This week we revisit one of our most popular international true crime ep countries, Japan. Focusing on folklore and urban legends this time, we explore just a tiny amount of Japan's rich and very long history. Kelsey reads a small collection of popular folktales, with some of the variations slowly becoming more and more bizarre (be warned that a clam wife may pee clam juice in your bean soup).

Then, Alanna shares a variety of urban legends popular with the more superstitious Japanese residents. From tunnels to computer pop-ups, to cursed poems and bathrooms, we've got you covered. One day in beautiful England, Stephen Cameron was on his way to get some snacks with his fiancée in London. Kelsey guides us on a tour of the Yonaguni Monument; a huge underwater sandstone structure with unknown origins. Is it man made, or a slow erosion of rock over thousands of years? It very well may be a bit of both, check out the pictures on the website and decide for yourself. Then, Alanna shares the story behind The Bloop, an extremely loud sound heard from points thousands of miles apart. Hello cryptic cuties! Weee're baa-aack!  This week we covered a covered a couple of cases under the loose theme of day of the dead/Mexico crimes, and we will say they turned out to be two very different crimes. Kelsey tells us the story of Digna Ochoa of Mexico, a former nun turned human rights lawyer and certified badass. She advocated all her life for those with less of a voice, all the while fighting off the threats from those who disapproved of her work. This tale highlights ongoing issues even today, for those who work to help those in need.  Alanna caps it off with a case in California, that happened on November 2nd, 2016. Sherri Papini went missing while out on a jog along the Old Oregon Trail, leaving her family frantic with worry. We'll take you through the ups and downs and the updates on the case from this year, and it's a wild ride, but no one gets dysentery, at least??

Enjoy this formerly Patreon exclusive episode! We won't be releasing a new episode this week, until Kelsey is feeling well and has a voice! (Sorry for the switch!)  Kelsey kicks it off with a double feature, first up is Philly's Phantom Bus to Nowhere. The bus appears to those who are a little lost in life, but once you are on it you cannot see the world outside the windows.....or who else was there.... This is followed up by the tale of the Bunnyman of Viriginia, which if you haven't heard of it, we will let you hear the whole story first to do it justice. It wasn't what Alanna thought it was at all! Then Alanna tells us about Dear David, the creepy child-ghost who evoked terror on a Twitter thread and tormented Adam Ellis in his apartment. Why are Adam's cats always staring at the weird hallway, and what the hell does this kid want?! To see the pictures/posts from this story, please see the bustle.com article by Lucia Peters that was referenced: https://www.bustle.com/life/what-is-dear-david-here-is-everything-writer-adam-ellis-has-tweeted-about-his-haunted-apartment-from-start-to-finish-7714979 Cause I'm not sure what I'm allowed to re-post, cause copyright maybe?! Let's take a haunted tour starting at the "Castles of the Rockies", the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Located in Banff National Park, Alberta in a valley carved out by glaciers, this haunted hotel has a long history marred by a few unexpected deaths.  Some spirits are super helpful and some seem straight out of The Shining, so take your pick! Next stop is Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana, which has a very violent past and tons of tragic deaths on site. No surprise some spirits stuck around after the trauma that happened here. There's even pics, so it did happen!! :P  Finally it's on to the Castle of Good Hope, how appropriate to begin and end with a castle! It's the oldest existing colonial building in South Africa, so it certainly has a long history as well. From the bakery to the torture chambers and dungeons, this historical site has something for everyone! Don't forget to visit the haunted bell tower, you might just see Lady Andy Bernard!!

Kelsey covers the story of the Papin sisters, who left behind a murder scene so disturbing, Alanna wishes she could erase it from her brain. Then, Alanna walks us through the mysterious stabbing of Robert Wone, a young man with a very bright future ahead of him. Why was the crime scene so strange? Why did even the first responders think something fishy was going on? You'll just have to listen to find out. From witches to political executions, it's got all the dark and twisted history! and some statues too. Then its on to Britain to meet a few famous occultists and a Black Sabbath bridge. This week we head across the world to India, where there are a lot of people, and thus there's bound to be quite a bit of crime. Kelsey regales us with a few fun facts about India before taking us on a dark and twisted road. It's a tale of a young man named Sharath with a love for fast bikes, a bright future, and a family who loved him. Their world would be turned upside down when he was kidnapped, and they likely never knew who to trust again after this heinous act. Trust no one..... Alanna caps it off with another dark story of betrayal and gruesome violence. We head to the fringes of Bollywood and the life of Laila Khan, an up-and-coming starlet who had much potential as an actress and model. She was reported missing with 4 other family members after a family gathering, and police would uncover a disturbing sequence of events in the months that followed.  The chilling thread that runs through both cases is you never really know WHO you can trust, or what's going to happen, but always trust your gut, and remember we all need to look out for one another! This week we try to cover a lot of victims by covering the highest kill count serial killers we could find. Sound dark and also super sad? It certainly is. But it's odd how the few killers always seem to get the most coverage- Bundy, Dahmer(covered him:), Gein, etc. And of course they are horrible, but there are a few evil murderers that top them all, the ones that kill tens, or even hundreds, of innocent and undeserving victims.  Canada doesn't have a ton of serial killers, we mostly have moose and they are scary enough if you come across one. But Robert Pickton was the worst one Canada has probably ever seen. His family's pig farm became a macabre part of Canadian history, and the aftermath led to some changes in criminal investigations of missing persons. Even worse than him, however, was Luis Garavito of Colombia. Although he had a dark childhood from the start, it does not excuse his heinous murders of minors. He knew how to torture others because of wounds inflicted on him and so many people suffered for it.  Buckle up guys, and I guess send us the therapy bills? Sorry. We are super excited to bring you a wild, hand-picked, fan-picked episode this week! An esteemed member of our Illuminaughty Patreon group chose Australian Crimes and we got to go hog wild picking whatever case we wanted!  So they are very different cases; first up Kelsey brought the stealth and wealth by covering the Bank of Australia robbery. The names read like a cast of characters, (seriously, Valentine? Dingle??) and it would probably make a great George Clooney film. It happened at the first bank of Australia, and this story has a lot of firsts, including the first time a bank robbery led to a bank taking back all its ....money? It gets real, y'all, real weird.  Alanna comes in clutch with a double feature- a true crime and one that borders more on weird mini-mystery. This week we decided to travel all around the world to explore some of the craziest and most interesting places we could find. Kelsey starts us off with a collection of almost all naturally occurring wonders. From some of the saltiest places of earth, to a few places with enough acid to melt your face off and everything in between. Alanna covers a number of stone circles and stone megaliths that have puzzled visitors and researchers alike for centuries. We wish we could travel to all of these places, if only we had unlimited time and money......sigh.  You definitely want to check out the website for pictures this week. Happy listening!

What constitutes a cult? Charismatic leader that plays or knows God, demands of undying devotion and very disgusting acts of violence?  and well, we have all those in spades in this episode of cruel cults and scary loosely religious based followings.  Kelsey covers the High Priestess of Blood and her unusual rise to goddess status in the small town of Yerba Buena, Mexico. The whole town ended up under her spell and was controlled also by the Hernandez brothers. Things grew very dark, very quickly, and everything from human sacrifice to pedophilia was condoned. Then, in a nod to Canada Day, Alanna teaches us all about a Canadian cult called the Ant Hill Kids. Yes, they worked hard, but has anyone heard of the death spiral? It's when ants lose the pheromonal trail and form a never ending spiral that they will walk to their death.... So it's not a surprise they don't question their "fearless leader" when he mutilates and tortures his followers and family. This is the story of a fanatic gone wrong.

What happens when you microdose arsenic and belladonna cocktails as part of your healthy routine? Nothing good, you guessed it! Oh sorry, they were digestive tonics, you say? old-timey medicine was straight-up bonkers y'all! As we see in Alanna's case, not all poison crimes are crystal clear; Florence Maybrick was accused of killing her husband James, but it's complicated by toxic family and secrets and lies. Perhaps James held the secret to a very famous mystery as well... Kelsey balances cat-wrangling and spinning a wild tale for us all, a story of a family annihilated. The members of the Staudte family start dropping off one by one, but who is to blame? The answer is nightmare no one wants to consider could be true. Watch out for those pillars of the community! and learn when to shut the hell up!

When you hear Hello Kitty you think soft and snuggly but as this is true crime, Kelsey's story is anything but. She tells the tale of Fan Man-Yee, a hardworking young woman who fell prey to predators in her midst. It's a heart-wrenching, horrifically cruel case that hurts to hear. Buckle up. Alanna has another tragic tale of a woman who was failed by the system, Xiao Huamei, otherwise known as the chained woman held captive by her keeper/husband. And to top-it off, a SECOND case of women being victimized by men- this time in the backseat of their ride-share cars. What circumstances lead to this occurring, and why does it seem to only ever leave behind a pair of legs? Alanna closes out the episode on a much lighter note; introducing a group of real life "superhumans". From withstanding cold and ice for long periods of time, to drawing extremely detailed skylines of cities from memory, we explore some of the truly amazing things the human body is able to achieve with some hard work and dedication. It's Part 2 of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer's horrific acts of violence. It kind of reminds us of that old saying from sing-alongs, you know,  same song- second verse, a little bit louder and a little bit worse! It's certainly going to be one of those things! Hopefully not too much louder, we try to keep the volume consistent :P Picking up where we left off, we go through all of his kills, close-calls, and eventual incarceration (yay!) and death. He should have been caught a lot sooner so prepare to be angry with us! Maybe grab a pillow to scream into and a piece of chocolate that Dahmer DIDN'T have his hands on, then join us for the conclusion of the life and crimes of the despicable Dahmer, aka the Milwaukee Monster.  linktr.ee/castlesandcryptids  Website: castlesandcryptidspod.squarespace.com

There seems to be a running theme with this week's episode- and it's love triangles! Well, one might be more of a rhombus, not sure, let's just say, It's Complicated.  Because how could we have Crimes of Passion without first having the passion? And who drives you more crazy than your significant other?? Evelyn Nesbitt was sometimes called the Marilyn Monroe of her times- a beautiful, photogenic and charming lady that had wealthy men falling at her feet. Kelsey pulls us onto the rollercoaster of life; her rise to fame, the drama of her love life, and her never-ending resilience. There's enough stories in her life to fill SEVERAL books (and it has). Love triangle #2 is more your standard variety- Boy meets girl, meets another girl, doesn't give up first girl. Chaos ensues. Parachutes are involved, it's not good.  To complete the trifecta of terror, Alanna ends it off with a Simpsons-centric crime. To kick off our Octoberfest of scary stories that we're bringing you all month long, we tore into some horror movies based on supernatural events. Some of them are true, others more, true-ish? As with all "based on a true story" films, we have to take the "truth" with a grain of salt.  Kelsey covers a creepy case based on a foreign film that is loosely based on the story of Manuel Blanco Romasanta. This Spanish man was suspected of being a werewolf.....but was probably something a lot more sinister. And soapy. Alanna covers her favorite horror author, King of horror himself, Mr. Stephen King! From Carrie to Doctor Sleep, Stephen King's stories have inspired more movies than any other author. Can you guess how many? that's right, a shit ton!
