More on Spencer Nelson: AW (AW), OTA (IUSS), EN (EOD) Nelson Spencer's Navy career was as unique as he was and not one that most sailors have the opportunity or fortitude to serve, not then (70s, 80s and 90s) and still not today (2023). He was afforded three (3) different platforms and ratings in his 20 year career. AW-Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator, reflecting a specialization that was clearly born out of Cold War needs to monitor the activities of Soviet submarines. He was stationed in Lajes, Azores where the maritime patrol aircraft crews would gather intelligence by detecting, tracking, classifying, and analyzing both surface and subsurface contacts.
OTA-Ocean Systems Technician Analyst, same premise and mission as the AW in him, but he got to do it from land based duty stations, Naval Facilities. He served at NOPF on Ford Island, HI. In 1990, more than 1/2 way thru his career he challenged the EOD physical fitness requirement because he exceeded the maximum allowable age limit, by almost a decade!!!!!! He "sailed" through the requirements and finally found his passion and jov of his career, EOD. He served with Mobile Unit 3 in San Diego until his retirement 26 years ago, 4/30/1997. He deployed on numerous occasions to regions you are all well to knowing of but had the biggest joy.

One of the main issues with millennial veterans is lack of community that leads to isolation. Jenna is our superhero who bridges the gap between the crusty old SNCO and the young troop who did their 4-6 year service. She gave this younger generation a voice and a tool to connect them all as they transition out of the service. Her unorthodox approach is exactly what we never knew we needed to help so many. She is the host of Vet Chats on Instagram, and started a community specifically for millennial veterans. She became part of a local legion where she noticed she was the youngest in the area and wanted a way to connect with others around the same age as her. She found out she was not alone and her message has touched the lives of thousands. Link up with Kerry here:https://www.youtube.com/kerrysteuarthttps://www.warriorsascent.orghttps://midtownyogakc.org I joined the Air Force in 1991 and planned on retiring after twenty years but unfortunately I was medically discharged in 1999. I was suffering from migraines, pain in my legs and a few other issues but those two prohibited me from serving our Country. I eventually began to have battles with PTS that affected my home and work life. Although I might appear happy and healthy on the outside, on the inside I was truly struggling. I was struggling to find a purpose, an opportunity to serve. I was angry and bitter because I spent the next twenty years trying to find out what was the cause of my health symptoms and the VA Hospital was not very helpful. All this frustration and anger was taken out on my family, friends and colleagues. My eldest daughter had been suggesting yoga because she thought it would help my symptoms. I started my yoga journey with a practice of mindfulness and meditation and what I discovered was that for the first time in a long time I felt calm and relaxed. I would pause any time during the day when a trigger or any type of anxiety occurred and perform a meditation practice. I had this practice for four months before I even stepped into a yoga studio. The true foundation of yoga is our breath and I have realized through this journey, that yoga is not just the hour on the mat, but the twenty-three hours off the mat. The mat sets the foundation for the rest of the day. Yoga does two things for us each and every day. First, it allows us to realize the things in our life that we are doing well and secondly, those things in our life that need work. Yoga is truly for everyone and it transforms our life from the inside out.I am a Gulf War Veteran who spent eight years in the Air Force. I have a BS in Business Management, a 500hr Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance and have been retired since 2014. Suffering from chronic pain and PTSD since my time in the military, I understand first-hand the numerous benefits of yoga and meditation for pain reduction and mental clarity. I am a yoga instructor that recognizes and believes that yoga can cause both physical and mental transformations that result in less pain, reduced PTSD symptoms and a reduction in stress. I provide a variety of classes that serve those looking for a physical challenge as well as a complete mindfulness/meditation practice. I realize that people come to the mat at all different levels with different intentions and I welcome everyone to come and make the class their unique yoga experience. Moderation and balance are truly two of the greatest aspects of being mindful. Providing a variety of yoga including talks to the community through different facets allows me to connect with the community. I have to make sure to not overextend myself mentally, physically or spiritually, otherwise I will not be able to provide the type of positive energy to my family or the community.

Airman Price had a dream - To become a Nurse in the USAF. She completed her degree and immediately applied for the Nursing Direct Enlisted Commissioning Program (DECP) held once a year, she was excited for her new future opportunities. Unfortunately, she learned learned the hard way that slots are limited and intensely competitive. She was told two years in a row her submission was not strong enough and eventually only had one year left to try again until her enlistment was up. Most would quit after the first attempt, but she did not.On her third year she gave it everything she had: an outstanding airman of the year, honor guard, and networking with mentors to point her in the right direction. She was asking questions and getting feedback - she did all this as a mother and as a new NCO, flooded with tasks in her current AFSC of Public Health. On that third attempt she received the news she was waiting for - she was selected! As of this writing (16 Dec 22) Deandra will be graduating her officer training this week and will go on to become a Nurse and an Officer in the USAF! Her life had two very different paths - SSgt Price or Lt Price. Despite all obstacles - this weekend we will welcome back Lt Price and we are so very proud of her! (At the time of this recording she was about to depart for her officer training.)

Madison’s “Why”
My friends call me Mads though my name isMadison. You can call me either. I grew up a dancer and because I wasn’t the best, I had to work hard. I spent time dancing with the NYC Rockettes, still one of my favorite “fun facts”. When I knew I wouldn’t dance on Broadway, I shifted gears and started to learn Cirque Arts before working in TV and Film.
I found myself in Los Angeles and London working 90 hour work weeks, convincing myself I loved my work and my life.
I have overcome grief and trauma in my life. I have felt embarrassed, ashamed, and afraid. I isolated myself from loved ones. I was in and out of therapist offices and harming my body in ways no one could see. I spent so much money, I couldn’t afford rent.
I teach, I coach, I train because change is hard. I have successfully done it myself and now I want to help you take the first step. I want to work with your lifestyle to create a custom plan for YOU while staying in your budget. I want you to know that even when you isolate yourself, I am there.
I want to be the person for you that I didn’t have.
"I am passionate about creating positive employee experiences, teaching leaders to be more effective, and helping people reach their full performance potential, both at and outside of work. It's impossible for a person to be their best self if they are disengaged at work. That's why it's so important to create workplaces that are concerned about the well-being of their people. When employees are highly engaged, they live happier, fuller, healthier lives, their organizations flourish, and our society benefits as well."

Scott DeLuzio is the author of SURVIVING SON: An Afghanistan War Veteran Reveals His Nightmare of Becoming a Gold Star Brother. He owns an e-commerce software development business and is an Army veteran, having served six years with the Army National Guard, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. Scott’s brother, Steven, was also deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. Unfortunately, Steven was killed in action on August 22, 2010. After returning home, Scott struggled with PTSD and the loss of his only sibling. Scott started Drive On Podcast to connect with current and prior service members. He interviews veterans and civilians to discuss personal triumphs, life experiences, resources, and emotional hardships to give hope and strength to the military community. Scott lives in Surprise, Arizona, with his wife, Vicki DeLuzio, and their three children.
Surviving Son is a compelling true story that provides the reader with an insight into the life of a combat infantryman who fought in Afghanistan at the same time as his younger brother, Steven, who was killed in action just miles away. Scott takes the reader on a journey through his upper-middle-class childhood to his call to service after 9/11. With college degrees and a bright future ahead of them, they left the safety of suburban life to fight on the front lines in Afghanistan. When Scott was asked why he would do this, he responded, “Why not me?”
The story provides many details that give the reader a clear picture of what it was like to fight for their country in a hostile war zone. Scott explains with raw emotion how he learned of his brother’s death, and minutes later, he was engaged in combat with the Taliban, the same group responsible for his brother’s death. He vividly reveals how he continued to struggle with PTSD from the stresses of combat, the loss of his only sibling, and the transition to civilian life.

"I officially retired on 1 Sep 2021 after serving 30 years in the United States Air Force. I served as an Independent Duty Medical Technician, First Sergeant, Inspector General Program Manager, Medical Group Superintendent and Command Chief Master Sergeant. I was able to overcome many obstacles and barriers as a black woman in chaotic, unconventional and dynamic environments. I served as a Command Chief Master Sergeant at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota during the onset of the pandemic, social and racial injustices and significant changes in the mission. I created a lifelong hashtag mantra called #SLAY, as a way to motivate and inspire myself and others to authentically show up as the best version of themselves. I attached meaningful context to each letter of the word of adopted philosophies that I applied during my career and compel others to do the same; “S” stands for Stay Ready to Be Ready, “L” stands for Lead Out Loud, “A” stands for A Sense of Family and the “Y” stands for You Are Built To Last. I am now the founder and CEO of #SLAY TO SUCCE$$, a professional coaching business for high achieving women who desire to Kill It, to Dominate It and to Nail It, without sacrificing their health, careers, relationships and happiness. (This episode was recorded live at Black Rifle Coffee Company Niceville - full video on Spotify or Youtube. Special guest host: SSgt Mike Rosa) "My name is Airman Kwasi Smiley and I grew up In Hamilton Ohio. My career is in the Air Force but I’m most passionate about Space and understanding the Universe. My short term goal is to start school and my long term goal is to be the best dad I can be. What I’m most thankful for right now in life is my family and when all is said and done, I’d like to remembered for just being "me" - being myself." Kwasi and his family were on their very first PCS across the U.S. as a family. Trucks were loaded and babies were crying yet they were having a good time and excited about their move from New Mexico to Florida. Half way through the trip a group of professional criminals hot-wired their vehicle attached to their U-Haul, and stole all of their belongings. Personal documents, heirlooms, furniture, pictures, electronics...gone in the blink of an eye. His supervision acted fast and created a go-fund-me for $10K. After friends and family desperately tried to spread their story around - Eventually this news hit the infamous AMN/NCO/SNCO Facebook page and his story went viral. Organizations like the Eglin First Sergeant Council, EveryWarrior.org, and Black Rifle Coffee Company (Niceville) chipped in and his family walked away with $15K. Although this doesn't replace everything - the love and support from the Veteran community was felt by the Smileys and it helped tremendously. It's what being a "Veteran" is all about. More on Janae: Sixteen-year-old Janae Sergio walks the streets of Hollywood, California terrified and focused on how to survive while avoiding attempts to be lured into drug addiction and sex trafficking. After making a life-changing decision to join the U.S. Navy, she experienced yet another petrifying adventure when at just nineteen, she was amongst the first service members to be forward deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Some would label her a hero for her contributions to preserving freedom around the world. But most importantly, Janae became the hero she always needed for herself. She went on to become a successful businesswoman where she was recently selected as the Chief of Air Force Lodging managing a portfolio of 88 Air Force Hotels.
After gaining a large social media platform, she turned her childhood dream into a reality by opening an online fashion boutique where she helps women step out of their comfort zones and embrace their own “flaws” as what makes them unique. Janae’s perseverance has been a source of inspiration for millions of people around the world. This story will have you reflecting on the hero you can become for yourself. Prior to being sent to war, Janae was no stranger to facing the unknown as that’s exactly what she had to do when she was dropped off at a homeless shelter at the young age of 16. "No one is going to rescue you. It is never too late to take the first step towards becoming the hero you have always needed."
As Master Guns is on his way to retire I want to honor him by playing a clip from our original conversation recorded in Dec 2021.

About the Book:
Entrepreneur Jesse Itzler chronicles his month of living and extreme fitness training with a Navy SEAL in the New York Times and #1 LA Times bestseller Living With a Seal, now with two bonus chapters.
Entrepreneur Jesse Itzler will try almost anything. His life is about being bold and risky. So when Jesse felt himself drifting on autopilot, he hired a rather unconventional trainer to live with him for a month-an accomplished Navy SEAL widely considered to be "the toughest man on the planet"!
Living With a Seal is like a buddy movie if it starred the Fresh Prince of Bel- Air. . .and Rambo. Jesse is about as easy-going as you can get. SEAL is. . . not. Jesse and SEAL's escapades soon produce a great friendship, and Jesse gains much more than muscle. At turns hilarious and inspiring, Living With a Seal ultimately shows you the benefits of stepping out of your comfort zone.
About the Author:
JESSE ITZLER only eats fruit 'til noon, loves Run-D.M.C., and enjoys living life "out of the box." In fact, he doesn't even have a box. The author of the New York Times bestseller, Living with a Seal, cofounded Marquis Jet, the world's largest private jet card company which he and his partner sold to Berkshire Hathaway/NetJets. Jesse then partnered with Zico coconut water, which he and his partner sold to The Coca-Cola Company.
He's a former rapper on MTV and wrote and performed the NBA's Emmy Award-winning "I Love This Game" music campaign and the popular New York Knicks anthem "Go NY Go." When he's not running ultra-marathons, eating vegan food or being a dad to his four kids, Jesse can be found at the NBA's Atlanta Hawks games, where he's an owner of the team. He is married to Spanx founder Sara Blakely.
About SEAL (David Goggins)

HEROBITES is a bi-weekly podcast clip for your mid-week motivation jump-start to inspire or educate you with our former guest's insight. Today’s clip is from episode 20 featuring SEAC #3, John Wayne Troxell - and the story on how he became world famous by turning an E-tool, into a symbol of courage.
Video recorded by a Stars and Stripes reporter on Dec. 24, 2017 in Afghanistan, shows Troxell delivering a speech to cheering troops as General Dunford and Florent Groberg, a Medal of Honor recipient looked on. Troxell, speaking from a stage, said that ISIS will be “annihilated, period!” before he launched into specifics.
“That may be through advising, assisting and enabling the host-nation partners,” he said. “It may be by dropping bombs on them. It may be by shooting them in the face. And it even might be beating them to death with your entrenching tool, but we are going to beat this enemy!”

Today’s clip is from episode 19 featuring Tiwanda Griffin-Greer in which we hear what happened the day she was trapped in her office with a gun wielding assailant and how she lived to tell about it.
A first-hand witness of an active shooter event that tragically unfolded at Lackland Training Annex in 2016. SMSgt Griffin-Greer discusses struggling with survivor’s guilt, invisible wounds, and giving 100% to the Air Force and her family.
We survive by telling stories: This episode is dedicated to the memory of Lt Col Bill Schroeder, and to honor him for his selfless actions to save the life of a fellow Airman, even if it cost him his own.
I was honored to be invited to the Facebook page let’s talk about growth to have a discussion on why I started my podcast and other great questions for me, it was so much fun! From BBC News - The invasion came by sea, air and land. Thousands of US troops descended on Panama, seeking to unseat its de facto leader and bring him to Miami to face drug charges. It was 20 December 1989, and the once close relationship between General Manuel Noriega and the US had deteriorated to the point of no return. In an address to the nation, then President George H W Bush said he had ordered military forces to Panama to "protect the lives of American citizens" and bring Noriega "to justice". The announcement came days after Panamanian forces killed an American serviceman. At the time, Noriega was also facing a US indictment for drug-trafficking, as well as claims he had rigged a 1989 election. Operation Just Cause, as it was dubbed by the US, saw more than 20,000 US troops invade the country and seize control of key military installations. Officially, 514 Panamanian soldiers and civilians were killed in the invasion but some local groups say the real number is closer to 1,000. Twenty-three US military personnel died.

I spend time with author Vitale Buford discussing her life and one of my favorite books EVER...Addicted To Perfect. This brutally open and honest memoir shows the dangers of chasing perfection and Vitale covers many strategies she's learned to kick a ten year addiction, toxic relationships, and an eating disorder. She is now living her best life! Tune in to find out how!
more on Vitale: "I’m an agent of transformation and lasting change. It’s taken me years to reach this place in life and it’s my mission to help others get where they want to be much, much faster. Aside from a professional coaching certification through iPEC (Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching) and 10+ years of corporate coaching, I’ve developed a superpower for helping stuck individuals and companies take action through learning one necessary, fundamental truth – They’re worth it. I’ve infused my professional education with my personal experience of overcoming a 10-year addiction and an eating disorder to create a unique coaching system. No two people are the same and neither are their blueprints. Each person receives a customized plan as individual as they are – based on a combination of education, experience, and intuition. I believe in high-fives, homework, and celebrations, and my favorite thing in the world is getting lost with my son and feeling like a kid again."

In his own words:
I spent over 37 years in the Army which culminated in the senior enlisted role in the Department. I was responsible for gauging the pulse of the entire enlisted force. It was a phenomenal role and I deeply enjoyed.
The greatest competitive advantage our military has is in our people. No country trains, educates, and empowers its people to the extent that the United States does. That means that when people leave the military, they are highly qualified to succeed in almost any role.

On the next episode of HeroFront I sit down with my best friend Ronnie and discuss our first assignment in the Air Force together, Andersen AFB, Guam in 2004. We discuss how our horrible first impression set us up for failure for the rest of our time there, using the "haters" and other poor supervisors to further drive our current success, and best of all we discuss the shenanigans we got into together that make for some really hilarious stories. We tried to angle this episode for any new Airman out there wanting to make a difference and how to not shoot themselves in the foot doing so. Lastly, this episode features my wife Angie! After a few glasses of wine she insisted on getting on the mic, and hilarity ensues. Enjoy! I love you all!
