-----------------------------Ep 246 I On When The Wrong Voice Wins: On Fear, Framing, and Fractured Followership

In moments of crisis, whose voice do we trust?

This week, we revisit the story of the spies — not as a children’s tale of giants and grapes, but as a modern case study in leadership failure, emotional mismanagement, and the dangerous allure of tribal familiarity.

Why did the people believe the fearful report over God’s promise?

Why didn’t Moses reframe the narrative when he had the chance?

Through the lens of leadership psychology, decision-making, and real-world parallels — including the current volatile situation in Israel — we explore what happens when fear sounds more familiar than truth.

Key insights include:

  • The hidden cost of leadership silence
  • Why followership fails without emotional containment
  • And how fear disguised as insight derails entire missions

This isn’t just biblical. It’s now.

Silent service builds the strongest foundations.

Who carries the mission when no one’s looking?

In a world that celebrates visionaries, Episode 245 turns our focus to the Levites — the silent leaders who kept the sacred intact as the people of Israel moved forward. They didn’t stand at the altar. They didn’t perform miracles. But they carried the weight, held the center, and made sure the sacred didn’t shatter in motion.

This week, we explore:

^ Why invisible leadership matters more than we think

^ How modern teams rely on sacred infrastructure to survive

^ What Starbucks, the Tabernacle, and your leadership team have in common

Because leadership isn’t always in the spotlight.

Sometimes it lives just outside it — and holds everything together.

“Leadership is about holding steady through the heat of uncertainty—allowing people to feel the pressures of change without ungluing the system.”
Ron Heifetz

------------------------

What do you do when you just don’t know?

When suspicion creeps in, when trust is fragile, when emotions are high but truth is unclear… the Bible doesn’t offer punishment. It offers containment.

This episode explores one of the most emotionally complex and misunderstood passages in the Book of Numbers — the ritual of the suspected woman — and what it teaches us about leadership in moments of ambiguity and mistrust.

You’ll learn:

  • Why the Bible pauses the journey not for logistics, but for emotional resilience
  • What modern leadership thinkers like Ron Heifetz, Adam Grant, and Wilfred Bion teach about “holding environments” and emotional containment
  • Four practical tools any leader can use to manage uncertainty without ungluing their team

Because leadership isn’t always about solving.
Sometimes it’s about creating a system strong enough to hold what you can’t yet fix.

“Freedom without formation is erosion in disguise. The leader’s first task is not to advance the people, but to ground them in sacred purpose and shared order.”

--------------------------

Before the Israelites take a single step toward the Promised Land, Moshe stops them.
Not to delay the mission — but to protect its meaning.

In this episode, we explore why sacred order is the only antidote to spiritual erosion.
What looks like a census and a camp diagram is actually one of the most profound acts of leadership in the entire Torah:
A leader forming a people before they fracture.
A leader grounding identity before asking for trust.
A leader building coherence before inviting movement.

From Bruce Tuckman’s team dynamics to Karl Weick’s sensemaking theory — this episode unpacks how Moses orchestrates formation as the only defense against collapse.

Whether you lead a team, a community, or your own life, this one asks:
Have you built a structure before asking people to move?
Or are you moving… without meaning?

This week, we close the book of Leviticus for the fifth time on Coaching the Bible. And we do it with I think one of the more emotionally honest episodes we’ve ever recorded.

It’s about burnout—but not the kind you fix with sleep or time off.
It’s about the quiet kind. The soul kind.
The kind that makes you smile while hollow. Lead while depleted. Achieve while unraveling inside.

We tell the story of “Bob,” a nonprofit founder who never stopped—until his soul did.
We unpack the Bible's command to let the land rest.
We reflect on the wisdom of modern thinkers like Dr. Christina Maslach, Dr. Gabor Maté, and Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith.
And we ask the hardest question of all:

What happens when we ignore the rhythms of our inner life?

This episode is for leaders who are always on.
For teachers, parents, creators, and caretakers who forgot what rest feels like.
For anyone who has confused exhaustion for devotion.

You’ll leave with tools, questions, a sense of possibility—and maybe, permission to pause.

Because 'Shemitah' (the Bible's term for leaving the land fallow in year 7) isn’t just about soil. It’s about souls.
And yours is sacred.

Tune in now to The Cost of Ignoring the Soul.
You don’t have to keep pushing through.

What if not being chosen doesn’t disqualify you—what if it defines you?

In the Bible portion known as Emor, we are introduced to a priest who is born into holiness… but barred from service.

He carries the lineage.

The responsibility.

The sacred calling.

But because of a physical blemish, he’s excluded from public ritual.

And yet—he is not dismissed. Not rejected. Not forgotten.

In this episode our 'The Leader Within' series, we explore what it means to lead without the spotlight. To influence without permission. To step forward, even when the world says “not you.”

This is a conversation for anyone who has ever been overlooked, underestimated, or told they didn’t “look like a leader.” It’s about reframing disqualification. Reclaiming agency. And realizing: you don’t have to be chosen to choose to lead.

Episode 239: Before You Fix It, See It – The Discipline of Diagnosis

Welcome back to Coaching the Bible: The Leader Within.

This week’s episode explores one of the most overlooked leadership skills: diagnosis. In a world that rewards action, leaders often move too fast—solving the wrong problems or making the right moves at the wrong time.

But the Torah, in its quiet brilliance, offers a different model.

In Parshiyot Tazria-Metzora, the priest doesn’t heal—he sees. He slows down. He waits. He returns. He examines again.

He models diagnostic discipline.

In this episode:

  • Why rushing to act weakens your leadership
  • What the priest’s model teaches us about judgment and clarity
  • How top performers in medicine, coaching, and leadership build diagnostic skill
  • A five-part toolkit to strengthen your diagnostic muscle
  • Why you can’t fix what you haven’t fully seen

Leadership doesn’t begin with action. It begins with presence, observation, and restraint.

Episode quote:

“You can’t fix what you haven’t really seen.”

Listen in. This is a different kind of leadership.

Episode 238 | Leadership on the Hardest Day (S5:E25)

Series: The Leader Within I Coaching The Bible

Sometimes leadership demands a decision. Other times, it demands a presence.

In one of the most emotionally complex narratives in the entire Bible, Aaron — fresh off the joy of national triumph — is struck by sudden, devastating loss. His response? Silence. But that silence speaks volumes.

In this deeply personal episode, we explore what it means to lead when your heart is breaking. We examine emotional mastery, attentional control, the role of presence over performance, and what it takes to be the kind of leader whose presence alone steadies the room.

From Torah to trauma psychology, Prime Ministers to boardrooms, this is an episode for every leader who's ever had to hold it together — not because they wanted to, but because they had to.

Ep 237 I The 4 Questions EVERY Leader Must Ask I Passover Special I Coaching The Bible I The Leader Within I S5:E24

What if the most powerful leadership breakthroughs don’t come from strategy… but from self-reflection?

In this special Passover episode of Coaching the Bible, we pause the weekly Torah portion and go inward. Because every great leader — biblical or modern — eventually faces four questions that change everything.

🟦 What’s it like to be led by me?
🟦 Am I focusing on what only I can do?
🟦 Where might I be wrong?
🟦 What am I pretending not to know?

These aren’t surface-level.
They’re not for the faint of heart.
But they are essential.

And you need to be asking them of yourself...regularly.

If you're leading a team, an organization, a family, or even just trying to live more intentionally — this episode is for you.

We'll explore how ancient wisdom and modern psychology come together to help us lead from within. Because when you grow the inner leader, everything else gets better.

Ep. 236 | The Call You Almost Missed

Series: The Leader Within | Leviticus Begins

This week marks the start of our fifth journey through the Book of Leviticus — and this time, we're going inward.

The Leader Within is a new series exploring how leadership isn’t just about power, plans, or platforms — it’s about presence, purpose, and personal growth. In this opening session, we examine the tiny letter that opens the book — the small aleph in the word Vayikra — and how it teaches us about the quiet, easily missed calls to lead that shape everything.

From biblical figures who resisted their call (Moses, Jonah, Esther) to everyday heroes who step into sacred roles — this episode unpacks what it means to feel called, how to discern it, and what tools we need to say yes when it matters most.

Podcast #235 | Pekudei | Beyond Sinai #4: The Legacy of Leadership – How Great Leaders Build What Lasts

Welcome back to Coaching the Bible. This week, we conclude our Beyond Sinai series with a powerful question: What remains after the leader steps back?

In this fourth and final session, we explore what it takes to build a leadership legacy that lasts — long after the speeches are over, the applause has faded, and the original builder is no longer at the center.

Drawing from Exodus 39–40, this episode unpacks the final steps of constructing the Mishkan and how Moses subtly transitions from central figure to sustaining presence — by embedding values into rituals, preparing successors, designing sacred space, and ultimately, letting go.

📌 In this episode:

  • Why rituals are more powerful than rules
  • How great leaders train successors to carry the mission
  • What it means to build shared space that reinforces culture
  • And why the ultimate act of leadership is knowing when to step back

This is leadership beyond charisma — it’s about building something durable, transferable, and holy.

🔗 Part 4 of 4 in the Beyond Sinai series:

  1. From Blueprint to Breakthrough
  2. Fueling the Mission
  3. Wearing the Weight

Whether you’re building an organization, leading a team, or raising a family — this is the session that reframes leadership not just as impact, but as endurance.

Am I building something that will last beyond me?

#230: The Leadership Covenant: Trust, Action, and the Decision That Defined a People

What if your team, your organization, or your community could commit to a vision instantly—without hesitation, without resistance?

"We will do, and we will hear."

At Mount Sinai, an entire nation made the most remarkable decision in leadership history: full, collective commitment before knowing all the details. No deliberation. No second-guessing. Just absolute trust in the mission.

This wasn’t blind faith.

It was the result of a structured leadership progression:

🔹 Collective courage – The first belief in change.
🔹 Persistent leadership – Trust built through endurance.
🔹 Decisive action – The willingness to move forward without certainty.
🔹 Leap leadership – Taking the first step before seeing the results.
🔹 Covenantal leadership – Committing to the future before all details are known.

What does this mean for us today?

How do great leaders create this level of alignment?

What psychological and cognitive mechanisms make this possible?

Where do we see this in history—moon landings, revolutions, business breakthroughs?

How can you apply the Sinai model to build trust, vision, and action in your own leadership?

This is one of the most powerful leadership conversations we’ve ever had on Coaching the Bible.

If you lead a team, build an organization, or seek to inspire lasting commitment, this episode is a must-listen.

Ep 229 I Strategic Leadership: Moses’ Pivot Beyond Survival & Into Systems

How do leaders transition from survival mode to building systems that last?

In this episode of Coaching the Bible, we explore Moses’ greatest leadership pivot—one that took him from handling every crisis himself to building a scalable system for the future.

After splitting the sea, confronting Pharaoh, and standing before God at Sinai, Moses should be leading at a higher level. Instead, he finds himself buried in every dispute, every decision, every detail—unable to step back. Enter Jethro, his father-in-law, who offers a radical leadership intervention:

“What you’re doing is not good. You will wear yourself out.”

This moment marks the first time Moses takes leadership advice from a human, not God. And what unfolds is a transformation from reactive, crisis-driven leadership to structured, sustainable governance.

🔹 How does the Eisenhower Matrix (Urgent vs. Important) explain Moses’ leadership shift?

🔹 Why do so many leaders struggle to delegate—even after major success?

🔹 What is the "Jethro Moment"—and have you had one in your leadership journey?

🔹 What is the Delegation Test, and are you passing it?

We unpack how modern leaders—from CEOs to community builders—face the same struggle as Moses: moving beyond hands-on execution to strategic, scalable leadership.

Listen now to learn how to pivot your leadership beyond survival mode and into systems that last.

Hey #Leaders-

Ever felt like you’re in a sinking ship and forgot how to swim?

Haven't we all?!?

This week on 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, I discussed why having a bit of faith can be your hidden life jacket.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀: Even when your project’s doing a Titanic, it's your job to be the calm captain. Remember, Martin Luther King Jr said something super smart about taking steps even when you can’t see the whole staircase. (It's our quote of the week).

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: From CEOs to local the heroes, we all hit rough waters. This talk isn’t just spiritual; it's about leading with guts when the going gets tough and when people are looking to you to be '𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯.'

We go deep on the following 𝟰-𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗦𝗢𝗦 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻:

1️⃣ 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻: Sit with the mess for a sec. It’s okay to not be okay.

2️⃣ 𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀: Do one small thing now to steer the ship. Think of it as your leadership cheat code.

3️⃣ 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗕: Have a backup plan. It’s like knowing where the lifeboats are.

4️⃣ 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: Find that one thing that 𝗶𝘀 going right. Yes, there’s always one.

We wrapped up with a gem from Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks,

“𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆.”

Basically, it’s okay not to have all the answers.

So, dear founders and C-suite legends, next time your world’s looking a bit dark, flick on the faith light. It might just be the spark you need.

Our Topic: 𝗢𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁...

Hi all!!

This week's episode completes Rd 3 of Coaching With The Bible. Congrats to all and thank you to all who have been with us each week: listening, sharing insights, posing questions, and being a source of encouragement and inspiration.

I appreciate all of you.

I do not take it as a given that you would give me your time and your attention each week when those could be spent in other places! So thank you!

It's true... I am an optimist.

I may appear to be a grouch or a curmudgeon at first, but int here is an eternal optimist...

How else could I have attempted fundraising for a living...getting turned down by potential donors and prospects on a consistent basis...

Believing in the cause is great, but it can get hard to move forward and just 'keep going,' that's where the optimist comes out:

it is covered over sometimes by what appears to be belief or confidence and while that's true, at its core, it is a mix of faith, belief, resilience, discipline, and a heavy and healthy dose of optimism that 'next time' or the 'next one' will work out and 'be the one'...

So my question for you is this:

^ Where and when are you the optimist or the pessimist?

^ What about each situation makes you one or the other?

^ Why do you think that to be true about you?

Join me as we begin to explore being an optimist.

Enjoy!

So, you messed up, again, huh?

Made some choices that would make even a reality TV star blush?

Said something no one should say?

Well, don't worry, we've all been there. It's called being human.

But what do you do when you've got to forgive the one person who's hardest to forgive – yourself?

Forgiving yourself for your flaws, errors, mistakes, and blunders, maybe one of the hardest things you will ever do (and on a regular basis!)

I don't think it ever gets easier, but how do we do it?

We'll focus on two questions today:

  1. What is the process to self-forgiveness?

  2. Why is it so hard to do?

Happy listening!

----------------------------------

🎙️ Episode 156 of "Coaching with the Bible" is here, and we're ready to explore the contrast between merely "being alive" and authentically "actively living." 🚀

Let me explain:

Life often 'just happens' and we go from Sunday to Saturday in a coma-like trance. Routine... Uggh!!!

We slip (sometimes numb) into autopilot mode: plodding along, day after day...maybe we notice it and maybe we don't.

At the same time, we know there's another way because we see it shows itself (hopefully) in certain moments in our life (but maybe not enough of the time): the full-throttle adventure of existence! 🌪️

Imagine waking up every day with boundless enthusiasm, prepared to conquer life's challenges head-on.

That's what "actively living" is all about and that's what I'm thinking and talking about right now.

It's about savoring moments and chasing your passions with relentless determination as if it were your last bite of the juiciest burger on the planet. 🍔✨ (LOVE a good burger!)

In this episode, we're going to talk about what it means to be 'alive' and what it would mean to be 'living'.

For you, it may mean unlocking the secrets that'll make the shift from the humdrum to the extraordinary.

Maybe it's injecting spontaneity into your routine, smashing through those comfort zones, and using setbacks as springboards to incredible comebacks. 💥💪

So, grab your headphones and join me on this exploration.

It's time to liberate yourself from the shackles of monotony and start living life as the thrilling adventure it truly is! 🌄🌟

Tune in now, and let's explore together. 🎧🙌 #ActivelyLiving #CoachingWithTheBible #Episode156

This is Episode 149 (S3:E40)

Welcome back to another episode of 'Coaching with the Bible.'

In this episode, we delve into a profoundly relevant and sensitive topic that every leader may encounter on their journey: being the guiding force during times of grief and mourning.

For the Jewish community, this time of year holds particular significance as it marks a period of solemn reflection and mourning for the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

As we embark on this episode, we find timeless and timely lessons within the pages of the Bible that offer valuable insights into how leaders can navigate and support their teams through these turbulent and difficult moments.

Grief is a natural and inevitable aspect of life, touching every individual at some point on their path. As leaders, it falls upon us to not only guide our teams through the highs and lows of everyday challenges but also to be a steady anchor when they face personal loss and heartache.

In today's discussion, we'll explore the psychology of grief and mourning, understanding why this process is essential, how people work through it, and why it can ultimately be a catalyst for personal growth and enhanced leadership.

Let us embrace the seriousness of the subject, while also acknowledging the hope and growth that can emerge from navigating grief together.

Hey everyone! 🌟

I'm curious to know - what are the things that trigger you? 🤔

Understanding the 'why,' the 'when', the 'who' and the 'how' behind those triggers can help us work on improving our response to them.

Two threads in this week's reading brought this subject to mind for me:

^ The mental and emotional state of the people before, during and after the spies go on their mission

^ The color blue on the '𝘵𝘻𝘪𝘵𝘻𝘪𝘵' (fringes) of a person's 4 cornered garment (mentioned way at the end!)

This is Episode 𝟭𝟰𝟯 (S3:E34) and we are talking about #Triggering this week!

So, let's dive deep:

^ Why do you think those triggers affect you?

and

^How can we work to overcome them? 💪

'Nothing important was ever accomplished without chutzpah. Columbus had chutzpah. The signers of the Declaration of Independence had chutzpah. Don't ever aim doubt at yourself. Laugh at yourself, but don't doubt yourself.'

— Alan Alda

Episode 142 (S3:E33) is here!

This week we dive deeper into the story of what was to become known as '2nd Passover'. Specifically, our focus is in their request in the first place!

Our topic: Chutzpah

Why?

Because what lives at the foundation and core of their question, 'why should we be any less', is a deep belief and hope that there is a solution, and a satisfactory one at that! Their hope/belief stems from almost nothing. There would appear to be no source and no basis for the question, itself.

It is, to use a phrase I once heard from Professor Ruth Wisse, a 'monumental chutzpah!'

So then our focus this week:

^ What is chutzpah and its English language counterpart 'audacity'?

^ What makes for an audacious leader?

^ How can we implement chutzpah more positively and more regularly in our own lives?

Happy learning!

'It takes a wise man to learn from his mistakes, but an even wiser man to learn from others.'

--Zen Proverb

This week I'm asking a basic question: how do you learn from others?

Meaning, there is so so much that we are observing of the lives and experiences of others, and I wonder as to the following two things:

  • how well we are paying attention to it
  • how much we are 'pulling' from it into our own lives vs dismissing or ignoring it outright

Think about how many people you are around each day in a good number of situations and how well or poorly they handle those moments and then how you might handle it...

I don't know about you, but I think about this a lot.

As much of the literature on this subject stated, albeit jokingly we don't have enough time in our lives to make all the mistakes and learn all the lessons.

This week on Coaching With The Bible, Episode #141 (S3:E32): On Learning From Others

Drop me a comment about how you learn from others or create an environment for others to learn from you.

'Personal mastery is the discipline of continually clarifying and deepening our personal vision, of focusing our energies, of developing patience, and of seeing reality objectively.'

--Peter Senge

We've all heard the phrase 'jack of all trades, master of none'.

I think it's one of the saddest quotes of all time!

Think about it.

The person in the quote has 'skills' and in many areas, just has never gotten 'it all together' and doesn't have even one thing to really call his or her own!

Sad!

I want to hope that each of us finds something that we are in fact a 'master' of, whatever it may be: athletic success, scholarship, kindness, or leadership.

No one should go through life feeling that they don't have a full grasp of anything they can call 'their own.' Yet, I do think that many people do go through life that way.

This week's episode, #140 (S3:31), takes a look at the concept of Mastery.

We ask the question:

  • What does it take to become a master of something?

  • Do we really need 10k hours of work to get there?

  • Is there a tried and true path in the research that we can follow to become a master?

Our jumping-off point this week is the 6th chapter of the Mishnaic text, Ethics of The Fathers, known as 'Acquisition of Torah,' and the list of 48 ways that a person can use to become a Bible (Torah) scholar (ie 'master'). It's an amazing list of attributes, efforts, skills, etc and in truth, it can be used in basically every walk of life where a person wants to become a master.

Looking forward to it! I hope you are too!

Hello All!

This is 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝟭𝟯𝟵 (𝗦𝟯:𝗘𝟯𝟬)

We finish the 3rd Book of Moses, Leviticus, for the 3rd time together! Exciting stuff!

So, what gets you angry?

What are the things in your life that trigger your wrath, rage, and fury?

Is it always true?

Does the same situation or person ALWAYS make you angry or is it sometimes but not others?

If so, why?

Why do you get angry at all? What's at the root of it?

We know in the bible that Moses gets angry and that even God shows anger, too.

It does not appear to be a sin, but what can we make of it?

“Sometimes the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.”

― Angela N. Blount

This is Episode 138 (S3:E29)

Our topic of the week: On Unexpected Opportunity

I think we all have an idea about the direction of our lives.

We go to school. Major in a particular subject. Get a job. Move up. Try to make some money. Pay for life. Maybe meet someone along the way. Build a family. Make a home. Etc

It's a well-beaten path. We 'know' how it's supposed to go.

But what happens when it doesn't go that way? What happens when life gets in the way?

What happens when 'Option A' is no longer and you have to live 'Option B'?

Let's go one step further: what if you have to choose to live 'Option B' rather than having some circumstance dictate it for you? Ie it's your doing, your choice...

It's hard. Yet, we see it all the time.

How do you cope? What are the mechanisms you use to move forward?

Is there an alternative way to see it? Can you see it as what could be considered an 'unexpected opportunity' or a 'second chance'?

Does that change anything? Our mindest or our actions? Our level of happiness?

We go there by deviating a bit from the portion of the week and talking about an event that took place thousands of years ago on this date (Hebrew date) known as the 'Second Passover.'

Happy Learning!

'Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that...'

- Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr

-----------------------------------------------

Hi all!

I got a bit of a late start in prepping this week. Sorry about that!

This week, Episode 137 (S3:E28)

Our topic: On Hating Others

Hate is a terrible thing. It impacts us all, and only negatively. It hurts our bodies, minds and souls. It kills relationships and destroys societies.

Yet, we all have experienced and likely have felt some form of it (maybe even right now).

While we can't cover all of this subject in one episode, this week we'll focus on our hating of other people.

  • Why we do it

  • What it does to us

  • A set of tactics and strategies to reduce if not remove the hate we may feel.

I am super curious to learn how you deal with hate in your own lives, so drop a comment and let me know a strategy, an approach, or a way forward.

--Roald Dahl

So, when was the last time you did a random act of kindness for someone?

Or

When was the last time you could have acted kindly for someone and didn't?

This week... Episode 136 (S3:E27): On Kindness

We are continuing our work on The Ethics of the Fathers. This week chapter 2

It is true that 'Kindness begets kindness.'

The question we want to work on is 'How do I become a kinder person'?

That's a real question for me as I don't think of myself as the kindest guy around (I can admit that about myself...I'm working on it!), and I often feel that I am not aware of the opportunities for greater kindness that are around me...

and maybe for you too...

Every piece of knowledge is something that has been shared by someone else. If you understand it as I do, mentoring becomes your true legacy. It is the greatest inheritance you can give to others. It is why you get up every day- to teach and be taught.'

-- John Wooden

Hi all!

Welcome back! I hope you had a great great holiday.

Quick question as always to get us started:

^ Who do you consider 'mentors' in your life?

Ok, what makes those individuals a mentor vs being a teacher or a coach? Is there a difference?

^ What value have they brought to your life/ impact have they had on you?

This week, in Episode 135 (S3:E26), we'll begin a conversation on Mentors.

We'll take a detour from the portion of the week and dip our toes in the classic work known as 'Ethics of the Fathers', a tractate of the Mishna that quotes hundreds of what you might call 'mottos', 'words to live by' or in the modern day, 'personal hashtags' of the most famous sages from the 1st thru (approx) 4th century.

As always, happy learning, and let me know what I missed and should have discussed.

As always a question to start with:

  • Where in your life do you experience the most freedom?

--> Is that while at work or at play?

--> Is that while reading and studying or on a run?

If we dipped our toe into slavery last week, then this week: Freedom.

This is Episode 134 (S3:E25)

  • How do we develop a greater sense of freedom in our lives?

  • What are the actionable steps we can take today to have more freedom, and perhaps more importantly, what would that mean for me?

  • What would that look like or feel like?

'Mental slavery is the worst form of Slavery. It gives you the illusion of freedom, makes you trust, love and defend your oppressor while making an enemy of those who are trying to free you or open your eyes!'

--Unknown

What are the things in life that hold you back?

^ Is it your past bad experience?

^ Maybe it's something someone once said to you and it stuck.

^ Maybe it was just something negative that you began to think about yourself and now it's 'true'?

All 3 statements/questions belong to a category of negative self-talk related to 'limiting beliefs.'

You are, on some level, suffering from a 'slavery of the mind'.

It is true that even after a person is physically no longer a slave to anyone or anything he or she can and likely still is mentally enslaved by whatever it was.

Take the story of the people of Israel upon their leaving Egypt. They were no longer slaves. They were physically free. How about in their mind and their soul? Were they 'there' yet?

Mental slavery or as others call it psychological slavery is something that holds so many of us back from achieving great success in our lives.

-- J.D. Stroube

Well, if last week we spoke about questions then this week is obviously going to be about answers!

This is Episode 132 (S3:E23)

Our topic: On Answers

As much as the Passover Seder IS about questions as we discussed last week, it is ALSO about sharing timeless and timely answers.

They are the kinds of answers that have connected with us from the beginning and still hit home with us today.

But, how do we (generally speaking) go about answering questions?

What is our approach? Do we have one? Perhaps we don't...yet

And

Curious: When was the last time 'I don't know' was your answer to a question?

“To ask is to believe that somewhere there is an answer. The fact that throughout history people have devoted their lives to extending the frontiers of knowledge is a compelling testimony to the restlessness of the human spirit and its constant desire to go further, higher, deeper. Far from faith excluding questions, questions testify to faith – that history is not random, that the universe is not impervious to our understand, that what happens to us is not blind chance. We ask, not because we doubt, but because we believe.”

--Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

This is Episode 131 (S3:E22)

Our topic of the week: On Questions

When was the last time a question that someone asked you stopped you in your tracks? Left you speechless? Without an answer?

Now, the opposite.

When was the last time you asked a jaw-dropping question of someone else? Not to embarrass or make them feel bad, but more so to draw out a new perspective or a different answer.

In coaching, I get to ask a lot of people a lot of questions and then have great conversations about goals, success, failure, process, blockages, mindset, and more.

It's one of the more interesting and gratifying parts of the work.

But how about you? What questions do you ask? What questions are you asked?

The questions move us forward and give us the opportunity to challenge, to rethink, to unlock and to grow all at the same time.

This week, we talk a bit about the questions and forget about the answers for a while.

'There are no small parts, only small actors.'

  • Konstantin Stanislavski

Q: In which relationships in your life are you 'the lead' and in which are you a 'supporter actor' or a 'bit player'?

I know, seems like an odd question, but the truth is that at every moment we are managing different roles for different people in our lives.

This week we go deeper into the idea that it's ok at times to not be 'the lead' and that the smaller role we play is not actually small at all.

The key for us is appreciating when and where we lead and where we don't

AND

perhaps equally as important is appreciating who is now or has in the past played those roles for us.

This is episode 130 (S3:E21)

'Everything that is past is either a learning experience to grow on, a beautiful memory to reflect on, or a motivating factor to act upon.'

What's the first thing you remember in your life? Your first/earliest memory?

Not a simple question!

Now, do you actually remember it happening or do you know that it happened and more so remember people around you talking about it so often that it's 'become' a memory?

Almost imprinted on your mind...

I think I have a pretty good memory (not even sure what that means anymore!), but I had a hard time with that question...

It's questions like that that we'll explore in this week's episode of Coaching With The Bible!

Hi all!

This is episode 128 (S3:E19)

Happy Adar! Purim is on the way! woot woot!!!

Our topic this week: Perfection

Simple question: Have you ever not started something because you knew that in the end, it would not be perfect?

Another simple question: Have you stopped pursuing an idea, a project, or an opportunity because you felt that it wasn't 'just so'?

I imagine the answer to both for most of us is 'yes'.

Why? Because for whatever reason we are conditioned to believe that 'perfect' is a thing that we can achieve and on occasion, it creeps in and stops us from going after what is real: excellence.

Let's dive in.

Our topic this week: Following The Majority

Picture 2 moments in your mind:

The first, where you followed the crowd simply because they were doing something (good or bad), but without any real thought as to why you were there.

The second, where you DID NOT follow the crowd and you held your ground, stayed with your logic, reasoning, and point of view.

^ What was the difference?

This is Episode 126 (S3:E17)

Our topic of the week: Sinai

Not simply what happened at Sinai. I think we all know that part.

^ But what does Sinai mean for us in the day-to-day?

^ Have we experienced our own 'Sinai' moments?

^ What impact has those moments had on our life?

^ Do they direct us, orient us, and anchor us when we have to make decisions?

^ Do we leave them in the past purely as memory?

In this week's episode, I'd like to introduce you to the term 'Sinaitic experience' and the concept of 'true north.' I am not the author of either though I am intrigued by both. I hope you will be, too.

Hi all!

This is Episode 125 (S3:E16)

Our topic this week: On Singing

The Bible this week tells the tale of the crossing of the sea and the subsequent Song of the Sea recited EVERY SINGLE DAY during the morning Jewish prayer.

It's a fascinating thing to me to imagine what the scene must have been like at the sea, hearing 2mm people reciting a song in unison.

The power, the spirit, the energy, the emotion, the freedom.

^ Where does that come from?

^ Why do we sing?

^ What can we take away from here?

So much to learn! Enjoy!

This week we read the story of the last 3 plagues, the commandment of the Paschal lamb and the exodus (Parshat Bo).

Our topic: On Compassion

We will dive real deep into an act of kindness not found in the text, but in the famous commentary of Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin, known as Netziv, that takes place literally in the dark.

Hi all!

This is Episode 123 (S3:E14)

I hope you had a great week!

Our portion of the week is Va'era

Our topic of the week is: On When The Boss Is A Dictator

How many of us have worked for a 'Pharoah' in our day?

The boss who takes all the credit, dismisses all the blame, points fingers, fires at will, listens to no one...

I bet it's a lot of us!

So this got me thinking about what it might have been like to be a magician or advisor in the court of the most powerful person on the planet: Pharoah.

Could you argue or disagree without consequence?

Could you have alternate ideas?

Could you yell, rant, rave, and scream at such a supreme leader?

Amazingly, the answer would appear to be: YES!

And that got me thinking about how best to live with or survive in a difficult work situation.

Could you even thrive in such a place?

How?

Hi All!

This is Episode 122 (S3:E13)

We begin Book #2! The Book of Exodus and the story of the formation of the People of Israel, from slavery to freedom, from a nation of tribes to the chosen nation.

Our topic this week: On Curiosity

All week I have been thinking about this topic and I think we generally both overlook and undervalue its importance.

At the heart of our creativity, our freedom, our thinking, and our success is the quality/value/skill of curiosity.

But I wonder, how much time do we give ourselves to continue to develop it, to cultivate it, to grow it?

If this is so vital to who we are (and I think it is), why don't we spend more time understanding it and working on it?

So, this week, we blend Moses, Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, killed cats, and a Curious Monkey named George!

We are often told that opportunity is everywhere... Did you see it? There went another one...

But how do we really find opportunities in life?

Is there a method or a set of skills we need to have to see the opportunities that are 'right in front of us'?

I think it's super hard, but we can do better!

Some of us will see the thing' in front of us and think: 'OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME' and run toward it!

Yet some of us will see the same thing and think: 'RISK' 'THREAT' and run for the hills!

Same exact thing!

Why? What is happening at that moment?

Why is one person ready to attack and the other ready to run?

That's opportunity!

This week we will learn from Joseph and his brother Reuben. We'll encounter Aaron and Boaz along the way as well, along with a handful of famous entrepreneurs.

Hi all!

This is Episode 117 (S3:E8)

Our topic of the week: On Fear

When we last discussed the story of the meeting between Jacob and Esau we focused on the possibility that Jacob was suffering through a crisis of confidence. I still that is true, though this year I'd like to direct our attention to Jacob's sense of dread and fear.

I'd like to suggest that everything Jacob does right up until he meets the mysterious man in the night is done out of fear, and from then on, not so.

I think we can learn so many things about how we can better handle (manage?) the fears that we face each day.

Like so many of the other topics we've discussed, we all have fear.

We fear all kinds of different things and it is quite different for each of us.

For the most part we try (and hard) to defeat it.

I'd ask you this question:

^ Do you more often win or lose your battles with fear?

^ Is there a better way to deal with life's many fears?

I think so.

Take a listen and, as always, happy learning.

Hi all!

Our topic of the Week: On Dreaming

We all dream and we do so all the time.

So many of those dreams are forgotten and even among those that we do remember, well, we try to share them with others, they don't make any sense at all.

Why we dream is I think a truly interesting subject and one we start with this week, but our main focus is the famous dream of 'Jacob's Ladder.'

Here's the question:

^ What is Jacob dreaming about?

^ How does he take that dream and make it his reality?

^ Does his reality match the dream?

^ What about our dreams?

^ How are we acting (not acting?) upon the dreams we have all the time?

--> Dreams about life, learning, growth, love, success...

^ Is there a method that we can implement that gets us there or close to our dreams?

Looking forward to diving in with you!

Abraham gets tested many times. So do all of us. Each day, each week, each month, and each year. It feels like it never stops. Especially the last number of years...

This week's topic: On Closing

This week we close out the annual cycle of studying the 5 Books of Moses. In the Jewish community the holiday of 'Simchat Torah' (translated as 'Joy of Torah'), is celebrated upon this accomplishment. It is a special day of singing, dancing and of course eating!

The next thing we do? Well, begin again! No breaks.

I wanted to jump a bit into how the 5 Books end, how Moses' life and story come to an end and then spend a few minutes talking about the art and skill of 'closing'.

Closing a deal or an 'ask' or a game is an expertise that some of us just seem to 'have,' but, the truth is, it is one that we can also learn, grow, and develop. We may marvel at someone who always seems to get the deal done or finish every project, and we should because it is impressive. At the same time, we too can be more like that and therefore succeed more often and at a greater level.

Let's learn!

See you in Season 3!

This is Episode 103 (S2:E49)

Our topic this week: On Being Wholehearted

I usually come to the podcast each week feeling 'ok' about where I am in relation to the subject matter of the discussion. So when I'm talking about strategy, leadership, or fundraising-related topics, it feels comfortable, as if I know what I'm talking about (at least a little).

Not so much this week.

Wholehearted living is such an important topic and vital for living a meaningful life, and I and so many people struggle with it.

If you're new to the concept and even if you've read, heard, or have worked on being more 'wholehearted' in your day-to-day, then this week is worth a listen.

We'll link Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Dr. Brene Brown and work to weave in some commentaries and a little bit of Hasidic thought as we work to develop a more 'wholehearted life.'

Here's Brene Brown's definition:

“Wholehearted living is about engaging with our lives from a place of worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion and connection to wake up in the morning and think, ‘No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.’ It’s going to bed at night thinking, ‘Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.”

Our topic this week: On Role Clarity

One of the things I spend a lot of time on with leaders is getting clarity around the role(s) that they and their employees/ teams/ partners play in their respective teams.

Getting clarity there: what is the role, who does it, how will they do it, how will it be measured, who else needs to be communicated with, etc, is VITAL to success.

A lack of clarity, or better true ambiguity, leads to frustration, disappointment, sometimes anger, and ultimately failure.

Hi all!

This is Episode 99 (S2:E45)!

We begin the 5th book of the bible, known as Deuteronomy (Devarim) and our topic this week is:

'On Framing & Reframing'

  • How often have you stared at a problem for an endless amount of time only to realize that you cannot find a solution?

It has happened to all of us!

The reason is often connected to the frameworks which we set in our minds and the frames through which we experience and understand the world around us and our own lives.

Well, when we are stuck, what should we do to get 'unstuck'?

--> Reframe!

I share a lot of time with leaders reframing constructs, problems, issues, and mindsets. That time together is vital and can sometimes being extremely difficult to work through to the other side.

When we can get to the core of the issue and then apply a different context, vantage point, and/or perspective we usually find our way.

Hi all!

Episode 94 (S2:E40) is here!

Our topic this week: On Problem Solving

This week, the Bible speaks about a few challenging situations that the People of Israel face as they are about to enter the Land. Some of these are familiar to us, as similar ones have happened before, and some are new. In each case, there seem to be a few possible solutions, again some we've seen before, and it's interesting to see which ones God and Moses actually use.

What is the process that they are using to solve problems?

What is the process that you use to solve problems?

We'll talk this week about 2 approaches that are popular in the business world: The Ohno Technique and The Kipling Method.

Super interesting!

Happy Listening!

Quote of the Week:

“We can not solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them”

Hi all!

I hope you're having a great week!

This is Episode 93 (S2:E39).

The reading this week is Korach and our topic is: Persuasion

We will run the actions of Korach through a test of the 7 Universal Principles of Persuasion to see how many (all?) he uses to try to influence the people and then seize power from Moses and Aaron.

Appreciating how persuasion works will help us toward developing greater skills (ie it is learnable) and ultimately greater success and impact.

Happy Learning!

Hi all!

Episode 92 On Trust

Ask yourself the following question: What, at its core, was the impact of the sin of the spies?

You might say: not going into the land

You might say: 40 years in the desert

You might say: disappointing God and Moses

I'd argue that in actuality, those are all results/consequences/punishments, but not the core impact.

This week's episode goes to the core: a breach of the trust-based relationship between God and the people of Israel.

We will discuss the benefits of having and building trust, a path to repair breached trust relationships, and my time in defensive driving school!

It's always fun and interesting here at Coaching With The Bible!

Enjoy, and as always, Happy Learning!

Hi all!

This is Episode 91 (S2:E91)

Our Focus this week: On Better Judgement

(Yes, I used the UK English spelling of the word judgement vs the US English judgment! Don't judge me!)

Think for a moment about a time when you made a bad judgment call. We've all done it. Hopefully, in your case, it was not painful or too consequential!

What was that moment like?

What was the situation like?

What were the consequences of that?

Why did you make that decision?

We've all done it.

So now, let's think about the future and how we might make better judgment calls.

What could we do differently?

What would it require for us to be more 'intuitive' in making better decisions the next time?

How would we know if we've done a better job the next time?

All of this is what we are discussing in this week's episode of Coaching with the Bible.

Our focus this week is better judgment and the storyline that we're going to focus on is the moment when Joshua attempts to defend the honor of Moses just after the moment when Eldad and Meidad are prophesying in the camp.

Happy Learning and Enjoy!

Quote of the Week:

'Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgement.' - Will Rogers

Hi all!

This is episode 90! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G that we have reached this moment. Admittedly, it's a bit hard to believe, though I'm guessing episode 100, will be harder to believe!

Thank you everyone for listening each week. I appreciate it and I appreciate you.

This week is a special episode (S2:E36) because we are celebrating my birthday (today) and our topic this week is: BIRTHDAYS!

What is the connection between the Nazir and your/my birthday?

If you guessed holding back from wine, you'd be wrong! Not doing that!

So, let's think through what if any connection we can find between those two seemingly unrelated things...

Can't figure it out? Well, take a listen and, as always...

Hi All!

This is episode 89 (S2:E35)!

This week we begin the 4th Book of the Bible, known as Bamidbar in Hebrew and Numbers in English.

Our topic this week: On Belonging

This week, the Bible tells us about tribes, leaders, numbers of people, and flags (of all things!).

I got super interested in the issue of the flags and wondered about the origin of that idea and what flags actually mean.

Why do we have them, why do we need them, and what does it say about us?

That led me to start thinking about identity, purpose, fitting in, belonging, and authentic self...

So, in a nutshell, this week's episode took me along a long and vital path! So much to discuss on this subject! (I say that every week!)

As always: Enjoy and Happy Learning!

Quote of the week:

'The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.'

Hi all!

We have reached the end of Vayikra (Leviticus), the 3rd of the 5 Books of Moses. Congrats to all!

This is episode 88 (S2:E34)

Our portion: Bechukotai

Our topic: On Learning

Most of the time, if I am not working, then you will find me reading something. Almost anything.

I like to read mainly because I like to learn. Almost anything.

Really I like to learn about everything, the universe, faith, business, leadership, sports, and politics. Name it and most likely I'm interested.

That is why this topic is so important to me.

I think it needs further treatment, but for today we'll talk about infinite learners, lifelong learners, toiling, and even shteiging (great Yiddish word!).

Happy learning!

We are closing in on the end of the book of Leviticus. Our portion (here in Israel) is Behar.

Our topic this week: On Sabbath

We are going to a deep dive into building a form of Sabbath into our lives, based on the concept of the land lying fallow for a year, and of course, the weekly commandment to observe Sabbath on the seventh day.

Amazingly, we will quote both Rabbi Elijah of Vilna and Ferris Bueller. Don't miss that!

Ask yourself this question and then start to listen:

'How have you built the idea of sabbath into your day-to-day'?  If you haven't yet, then take a listen! You need to.

Hi all!

Happy Israel Independence Day and Happy Mothers' Day!

This is episode 86 (S2:E32)

When I say the word 'respect' what is the first thing that comes to your mind?

For me, it was 'R-E-S-P-E-C-T' by Aretha Franklin. So, we're not going to go in that direction this week, but we are going to talk about the value and importance of respect.

Our subject comes to us this week by way of the seven-week 'Counting of the Omer' period that is discussed in the week's reading (Emor). The Bible does not describe this time period as either happy or sad, but it would seem from the commentaries that it was meant to be a happy time that joins the celebration of the Exodus and the giving of the Law on Mt Sinai seven weeks later. Yet, we commemorate at least the first handful of weeks as a time of mourning in memory of the death of the students of Rabbi Akiva. The Talmud describes the reason for the death of the '12k pairs' of students as a 'lack of respect for one another.'

How does that happen?

What does that mean?

What is respect/disrespect and where do we see it (not see it?) today?

How do we grow our self-respect and respect for others?

As always, super important topic (a bit long today!).

Enjoy & Happy Learning!

Hi all!

This is Episode 83 (S2:E29)

A special edition of Coaching With The Bible for the holiday of Passover (Pesach).

Our topic this week: Storytelling

Quick question:

  • How well do you know your parents' story?
  • How well do you know your family history?
  • How tied in are you to how your family got to where it is?

Well, in this week's episode we connect our personal story to our communal story, and our personal narrative to our covenantal narrative as we aim to understand the value and benefit of telling good stories.

Knowing the answer to those questions above is crucial!

We'll also tackle a bit about what makes for a good story and how we can share our own story at the seder and why that's important.

Happy listening and Happy Holidays to all!

Hi all!

This is Episode #77 (Season 2:23)

This week we once again complete the Book of Exodus with the building and establishment of the Tabernacle (Mishkan) in the desert. A story that has occupied much of the bible text for the last 5 weeks.

Our topic this week: On Measuring Success

The question: How do we measure our successes in life? Is it purely a calculation of numbers, overall impact? Is it emotional or is it something else? If we look at the bible story would we measure the people's success by virtue of the number of donations, or the time spent volunteering to build the Tabernacle or would it be the end when God 'rests' on the building?

Each is a worthy measure in its own right, but which is correct?

Or is there no right answer?

Let's find out.

Hi All!

Welcome back to Coaching With The Bible! This is Season 2, Episode 22, and overall #76!

Our topic this week: Talent

We talk about talented people all the time. Some we see as 'prodigies' and others as 'naturals.' They have 'God-given ability' the likes of which we could never approach.

Is that actually true? Is there truly a thing as 'innate ability?'

When you think about it, ask this: What is 'talent'? What do we mean when we use that word to describe someone's ability?

Hmmm... Good question, no?

So, this week, we will look at the choice of Bezalel to build the Tabernacle (heb. Mishkan) for the people of Israel. Where does he come from and where does he get the ability to do the things he is tasked with?

How then, does that relate to us?

Such an important topic!

Welcome back to another week of Coaching With The Bible!

This week: Ki Tisa, Episode 75!

Our Topic: Anxiety

We will look at one approach to understanding what the people of Israel were thinking when they determined it was time to make the Golden Calf. We will not excuse the act, but rather explain what is going on in that moment and perhaps appreciate how that could be us, though not in building idols but in many other moments and situations in life.

I get a little vulnerable this week and I hope it helps deepen your understanding of this top-layer conversation on anxiety.

Hi all!

I hope you are having a great day!

This is Season 2 Episode 20, #74

Our topic this week:

Tetzaveh: On Showing Up

We take a look at George Washington at his first inauguration and the High Priest as he enters the Tabernacle. Yes! A comparison between the two exists! But that's not our focus...

Our focus is on the idea of how each 'showed up' when they needed to.

What is it that the leader has to have in mind and pay attention to when it is that he/she has to 'show up' somewhere?

What is 'showing up'?

Showing up is the impression, the vibe, the energy, and the presence we bring to any moment that we find ourselves in. It could be a meeting, a sporting event, a dinner with family or friends, or even a religious service. It begins before we arrive, but it shows itself in the first moment that we do arrive.

How do we come into those spaces and moments?

How do we prepare for them?

As a leader at work, in the community, or at home we actually do get to choose how we can show up. So the question then is, how do I think about it and how can I prepare better for those opportunities? So Important!

Enjoy & Happy Learning!

Showing up is essential. Showing up consistently is powerful. Showing up consistently with a positive outlook is even more powerful. – Jeff Olson

Hi all!

Episode 71 has arrived!

This week we are discussing 'Boundaries'

Some will call them borders, others will call them fences, and still others, walls. They are the things that separate us and divide us, or so we might think!

What if boundaries are actually good for us, help us, allow us to grow? Then maybe they're not so bad and maybe we should consider the boundaries we have and perhaps more importantly the ones we don't yet have...

This week, we will take a look a the People of Israel as they stand at the foot of Mt Sinai to experience the revelation and the receipt of the Torah from God and focus on the boundaries that God sets up around the mountain in advance of that all-time powerful experience.

Hi all!

We have reached another milestone! Episode #70!!! Feeling quite grateful and thankful!!!

This week's discussion, for Season 2 Episode 16, is Beshalach: On Obstacles

The people of Israel hit the ground running this week and run into obstacle after obstacle, adversity after adversity, problem after problem and the question is 'why?'

Why does God have to constantly make it so difficult for them? Can't they rest? They've been slaves forever! How about a week off, then bring on another challenge?!? It seems endless... What is going on?

The truth is, I think many of us feel that right now it's the same for us as well. If that is the case, then what is going on? What can we do about it? How do we handle/deal/approach it? What does the story of the People of Israel in the desert this week have to teach us about life's many obstacles?

This week's topic: Alignment

Let's change it up a bit and use a quote to start us off:

‘How we think of ourselves (our self-image) and how we behave in accordance with that image in the real world is the stuff of congruence. It’s one of the most profoundly powerful drives we have as humans – to live in consistent alignment with who we think we are, how we want others to perceive us, and who we want to become. When we don’t behave as the person we believe ourselves to be, we feel “off”, “out of sorts” and often frustrated or angry. If we think we’re lions, for example, but we act as mice, we secretly loathe ourselves.’ – Brendon Burchard

Our time this week is a look at an act of valor, risk, heroism on the part of Moses, the core principle that act teaches us, and then the question about our own 'red lines'. We will get into a discussion about the development of our moral and core values and how we can continue to work on them as we continue to work on ourselves.

Episode 52 is here!

This week: On Forgiveness

A slight departure from our usual dissection of a subject that is based on the weekly reading of the Torah and instead, a topic that is timely to the holiday of Yom Kippur: Forgiveness.

So, my question of the week: How forgiving are you? When someone (friend, relative, co-worker) wrongs you, how quick are you to not only NOT just blame, yell, argue, fight, etc, but rather to forgive?

Not an easy question to answer (especially if we are being truly honest with ourselves), but one we need to take quite seriously all the time and in particular at this time of the year with the New Year just ushered in and Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) ahead of us.

Take a few (extra) minutes this week to explore this topic and let's get to working forgiving others!

Shana Tova, Happy New Year, and may you be fully sealed in the Book of Life!

Hi All!

Episode #51 is here. This week we discuss a timely topic: Repentance.

With the Jewish New Year upon us in just a few days, our minds are a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. One of the many things we are thinking about and perhaps actively working on is repenting for all that we may have done wrong during the past year. Repentance as a commandment is beautiful, if somewhat difficult to fulfill.

We often feel a sense of guilt about all of the 'bad' we may have done, and then feel guilty about the guilt and about the repenting, and so on and so on! It's hard!

This week, I want to delve a bit into the benefit of the repentance process and take a moment to zoom in on two things:

  • How close in actuality we are to it
  • How to say 'I'm sorry'

Apologizing is a key ingredient to successful/proper repentance.

Happy Learning!

2 last items:

  • Happy New Year to all of you celebrating the incoming Jewish New Year this week, and wishing you and yours nothing but a year of blessing, success, happiness, and health

Hey! This is a SPECIAL EDITION of Coaching with the Bible!

That's right! Episode #49 is coming to you early in the week (no worries, there will be another later this week) because we have an important matter to discuss: YOU

The High Holidays are fast approaching, 2 weeks from today and we need to get to work on: YOU

Ask yourself this question:

How often have I reviewed myself in the same way that probably happens at work (annual performance review) or happened to me as a kid in school (test or semester report card)?

My guess is probably never.

Yes, on occasion when we say or do something we shouldn't have said or done, we'll look back on it and feel bad, maybe even apologize. A full-scale personal review of everything? Not likely.

No worries, that was my answer too! (until now!)

But to quote a world-class coach, John Wooden: 'Without proper self-evaluation failure is inevitable.'

I invite you to take a listen to this special episode focused on 'the what, the why, and the how' of a personal annual review, and then below I share a special link to your first 'personal annual review'.

As always, we'll begin with the current week's Torah reading and work from there to our own lives.

This week, different than before, I'm asking you to share:

  • Your comments, critiques, questions, and ideas about the below-linked review
  • If this resonates with you, then share it with others (friends, family, colleagues)

The more people who work through this the better their upcoming year will be and by extension, the better all of us will be.

Note #1: Your answers are your own and neither I nor anyone else has access to nor needs to know your answers

Note #2: To use the document, first make a copy of it and then get to work!

Happy Learning and Growing!

How self-aware are you?

For example, when scenarios pop up that you've been in before, do you think/work it through before acting/reacting, or 'nah', you jump headlong in without a care in the world?

Do you try to understand and appreciate why you do what you do when you do it (a bit of a tongue twister there!)?

Do you try to tune into your emotions, feelings, and thoughts while you are in a moment that can go either way?

Do you take time to reflect, evaluate, and introspect before heading into the same day-to-day scenarios or do you go with what comes natural or out of habit?

How does all this fit into the bible and where does the bible discuss this?

This week's episode, #48, is entitled 'On Self-Awareness,' wherein we take our first direct look at the critical role that reflection, evaluation, and introspection can play in our lives. We'll briefly touch on the benefits, barriers, and some active practices to improve the level and quality of our self-awareness!

Parenthetically, I am quite self-aware that I went a bit long during this week's episode (see what I did there!)

Hi all!

Episode 47 is here!

How comfortable are you at saying the following words: 'I don't know?'

It is so hard for so many of us to utter those words. For some, it's a matter of feeling tarnished by not knowing something. For others, it's a sense of diminished intellectual capacity. It can sometimes be brutal to say it out loud. I imagine we've all been there.

That said, most (if not all) of us, can acknowledge that we do not know everything, nor that anyone thinks that we do. Yet still, we struggle with it.

  • Why can't we say it?
  • Why must we learn to do so?
  • How can we go about beginning to say these 3 words?

Where in this week's portion does this matter come into being? Fun topic!

Say it with me: I DON'T KNOW!!!! (I feel better!)

Hi all!

Episode 45 is here!

This week we go a bit deeper on a concept we've mentioned before while we were exploring other ideas: Mindset.

We hear a lot about 'mindset' in many places and from many people, from athletes to entrepreneurs and everyone in between, but there is one overarching question: What is 'mindset?'

Once I know the answer to that one, I have a key follow-up question: how do I develop what some call a 'winning mindset'?

Well, as always, we look to the bible for some insight and then we'll bring in a bit of Dr. Carol Dweck, the authority on the subject, and Rob Dial, the host of the Mindset Motivator podcast.

Do you ever go Above & Beyond? 'Go The Extra Mile'?

When?

Why?

How?

For who?

Do you know someone who lives that way? Meaning, their entire mindset and approach to EVERYTHING in life is 'going above & beyond?'

(If that's not you, totally ok, though I am so curious to ask you how THAT person makes you feel! I won't ask, but I think I know!)

It is a legitimate approach to life and one that highly successful people often ascribe to.

How about you?

The bible teaches us this idea this week in commentary on the words 'Do that which is Right & Good In The Eyes of God'. What does that mean exactly and how, if at all, does this differ from all of the commandments, laws, rules, etc already defined and described in the bible?

Let's find out on this week's episode (#44) of Coaching With The Bible!

We'll learn about the concept of 'Going Above the Letter of The Law' and we will learn from Rashi, Ramban (Nachmanides), R' Aharon Lichtenstein, The Netivot Shalom, Wayne Dyer, Zig Ziglar, and Gary Ryan Blair (a new personality on the podcast!)

I went a bit long this week! Sorry about that, though I'd ask you to stay to the end!

Hi all!

Episode 43 opens up the 5th and last book of the Five Books Of Moses, known as Deuteronomy (or Devarim).

We pick up our conversation with a discussion of the key role that teaching plays in being a great leader.

Quick question to consider as we begin: Think of the great leaders in your life, were they also great teachers? If so, how? If not, how did they lead if they did not teach?

We'll learn from Pres Washington, Rabbi Sacks, Harvard Business Review, and from our own experience of great leaders as teachers.

Thanks for being with me through the first 4 books and I am raring to go on Book 5!

Hi all!

We have reached episode 40! AMAZING!

This week's topic: On Succession

We delve a bit into Moses' concern for the person that would be chosen to follow in his footsteps as the leader of the People of Israel and the person to be tasked with taking them into the Land and settling it with them. An ENORMOUS task!

The question though is: what if any succession planning, development, and execution have you set in motion in your life, whether that is business or personal? what does it mean to establish a plan of succession and why don't most people have that done?

Important subject! We'll hear from Rabbi Sacks, Rabbi Hayyim Angel, Marshall Goldsmith and others as we scratch the surface of succession.

We ALL know of the cowardly lion from 'The Wizard of Oz' seeking only a bit of courage.

I imagine we can name others who we deem as 'courageous' or 'brave' and certainly have many we believe to be cowardly.

The question is: what does it actually mean to be a person of courage, where does it come from, and maybe most importantly, how do we get some?

This week on Coaching With The Bible (episode 36) we go deep on the 2nd of the Three Traits of Great Leadership: Courage

Our focus this week will be the story of the spies and in particular Caleb, the spy of the tribe of Judah.

Can't wait for this one!

If I asked you what does it mean to be arrogant, you could tell me without issue. You might even want to point out a person or two (please don't!)

If I asked you what does it mean to be conceited or cocky, you could tell me that, too.

If I asked you what does it mean to be humble, what does it look like, I think you are more likely to tell me what it isn't than what it is. Sometimes that is easier because humility is hard to define and explain.

What does it mean to be humble or display humility?

Is it something we can build and practice or is it inborn?

Why is it important (it truly is!) In every part of life to be humble?

Let's learn from the MOST humble person who has ever lived: Moses.

In this week's episode, we begin to tackle the subject of humility, why it's important for leaders, and how to grow it.

How do we create unity on our teams?

To me, this question opens up a long conversation about the concepts of unity and diversity and goal setting and success, etc. It's a BIG one and it is also one that we will only begin to delve into this week. More to come...

So...

  • How do we create unity on our teams?
  • Does unity relate to or stand distinct from last week's discussion on harmony?
  • What lesson(s) do the biblical tribal leaders teach us about building unity?
  • How do we see that in the long listing of gifts that the bible details in this week's reading?

Hi all!!!

Quick shout out to my oldest daughter who is proudly and bravely defending our people as a member of our armed forces! I don't think anything I ever personally do, will come close to that! So proud of you!!!

Please have her and all of her fellow soldiers in your prayers today and every day.

This week's episode is entitled 'Bamidbar: On Harmony'

Harmony is not usually a word we associate with coaching. I get that. We would more often speak of congruence and alignment whether around an idea, a plan, or a goal. However, just based on the way I think about the work and the goals we are trying to achieve, I don't think those terms go far enough, nor do they always get us to where we ultimately want to be. This is why I am partial to the term harmony. When we think of harmony in the sense of flow, being in sync, teammates intuitively knowing where to go, what to do, and how to act, then we can see how this idea fits into Coaching With The Bible.

In this week's first episode of the Book of Numbers, we talk about harmony and how we see that concept built out by the architecture of the encampment of the people of Israel in the desert. We'll go a bit deeper and learn from the concept of 'emergence' as it relates to the way fish swim schools and birds come together as a migrating flock.

We will then touch on an interesting approach to building harmony within our teams based on a structure first introduced by Dr. Bill Tuckman in the late 60's known as 'Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing.'

Ah!!! So much to learn and so little time!

Happy Learning!

PS Wishing all a Shabbat Shalom and a Shavout Same'ach (Happy Day of Receiving The Bible!!).

Hi all.

A tough couple of weeks here in Israel. I hope you and yours are safe, healthy, and happy.

As we head into the holiday of Shavuot and the acceptance, once again, of the Torah from God, that we do so with great reverence, humility, respect, joy, and excitement. There is so much to learn and so many ways to grow.

As we did at the end of both Genesis and Exodus, I thought I'd share a short BONUS summary episode for Leviticus entitled:

'Leviticus: Upon Reflection III'

Leviticus included only 7 episodes, even as it contained 10 bible portions!

As I mentioned in both prior 'Upon Reflection' episodes, our ability to reflect provides us with a great opportunity to appreciate, give gratitude, grow, and learn again both from what we did and did not do well the first time through this book. Leviticus holds within it so much depth that I think we barely scratched the surface, yet it did feel as though we hit on some deep insights and ideas.

In our 7 episodes we learned about:

  1. Intentionality
  2. Preparation
  3. Owning Mistakes
  4. Office Gossip
  5. Sanctity & Holiness
  6. Vulnerability
  7. Consequences

Another incredible list of topics and ideas!

Take a listen for the key summary lesson from Leviticus and looking forward to Book 4: Numbers (Bamidbar)

Happy Listening and learning! Thanks for being with me each week!

Episode 31 coincides with the conclusion of the Book of Leviticus! (That happened way too quickly!!)

How much of what happens to us in life is a direct result of our actions? It's a heavy question, I know, and not one that is answerable in a single podcast.

Allow me though to continue with the following:

When the Bible describes incredible blessings and horrific curses in this week's reading do we see them as blessing and punishment, and up to God to determine whether we receive one or the other? What happens if we see and understand them as directly connected, for good or otherwise, to what we did or did not do? Meaning to say, if we view them as a consequence, ie the direct result of our actions/inactions, and therefore positive or negative consequence, rather than reward/punishment, how does that potentially impact what action/inaction we take?

In this week's episode, we discuss consequences and by extension, the manner in which we plan, consider, and strategize the actions we take and the ones we skip in bringing about a specific result. How far down the line can we or should we think before we act, and how much better our decision-making practices can be if we did plan this way.

We'll discuss the concept of secondary and tertiary level thinking as well as briefly mention the role of choice as it exists between, as Stephen Covey writes, stimulus and response.

Happy listening and learning and congrats on completing Leviticus/Vayikra!

We have reached episode 30!! Definitely worth a moment or two (or three) of gratitude and appreciation! Thanks for being with me each week along this journey. I know that it's not a given, so I appreciate it. Thank you!

This week's topic is one I think many of try to avoid: being vulnerable and our capacity for vulnerability. We avoid it, I avoid it. I can admit that, which made preparing and presenting this a bit more difficult. What can I say, I am (still) a work in progress and my willingness and ability to be more vulnerable can only make me a better person. I definitely know that and can put that out there.

The literature and data are clear: the path to courage, leadership, joy, and (even) creativity all require a dose of being vulnerable. If we want to get to our best, whole-hearted selves, then we need this conversation and self-work.

So onward and upward with being vulnerable! (Do we celebrate that? I have no idea!)

Our starting point will be the story of the blasphemer way at the end of the reading this week and we will then use the work of Dr Brene Brown to unpack the concept and develop a plan of action for ourselves and for our teams.

Happy listening and learning

So this week we went on location! Our episode was recorded live from the local baseball field, and incredibly that fit right into our topic for the week.

This week: On Sanctity & Holiness

How do you mesh work life and spiritual life?

Where does sanctity and holiness fit into the work environment? Or perhaps it doesn't at all?

If you are the leader, is there a way to balance those different aspects of your life and somehow bring that into the office space and into your teams?

Initially, I struggled with this one, so let me know your thoughts on where we end up!

Happy listening and learning. Have a great week!

Have you ever heard the quote: 'The only thing to be doing behind someone's back is patting it'? Well, that idea was shared with me years ago in one of the office environments in which I had worked. Unfortunately, the person who shared it, didn't live by it, but the idea stuck with me and very much rings true to me.

What is it that we are or are not doing behind the backs of our teammates? Are we talking about them? gossiping? sharing personal details either true or worse, false?

What is the impact both obvious and hidden on morale, success, productivity, trust, etc?

This week on Coaching With The Bible we get into the matter of 'The Office Gossip'.

Using the lessons from the Bible's leper as learned in this week's portion of Tazria-Metzora and the deep understandings of the Sages, we'll form an approach to designing and implementing a basic but solid structure to manage the gossip in our work and leadership environments.

  6. Empathy

How did that clarify Esther's 'why' and 'purpose' and how did Mordechai explain that to her in a way that clearly hit its mark?
