2024 officially marks my 10-year anniversary of being a competitive shooter. It also represents 10 years since I've legally been able to and have carried a gun daily. This milestone is something I'm proud of and something I really wanted to talk about.
In this episode, the roles are reversed, and I get interviewed by Dave Hartman of Prep And Press. We talk about my journey in shooting sports, what I've learned along the way in terms of gun and gear maintenance, how to prep for matches, and how to navigate the world of firearms ownership.
It's been a wild ride that has led me to start the Reticle Up podcast, managing brands online, shooting all across the country, going to SHOT Show for the first time, and more! I never imagined any of this would lead me here, so I'm excited to share about my 10 years in the firearms world! This educational episode is with Zach, the Owner of ZR Tactical. He shares his passion for Land Cruisers and other all-terrain vehicles, as well as his dream car. We talk about how many legal firearm and firearm accessory companies are blocked from using basic business platforms such as payment processors, website builders, and how much social media has banned his content from being shown. This episode is eye opening into what it takes to be an entrepreneur in the gun world.

My dear friend Brooke Proskovec is one brave soul for diving right into 3 Gun competitions by showing up to shoot with just an inner belt of her own. Brooke shared with me that she wanted to get into 3 gun competitions but didn't have any of the gear of her own to really sign up and shoot. As a Steel Challenge and USPSA shooter, Brooke knew her way around a pistol, but her first love was iron sights. I convinced Brooke to sign up and shoot the 2023 Zoo City Fall Brawl 3 Gun match and also convinced her she would want to shoot a pistol with a red dot optic on it specifically because of how challenging the match is for pistol shots.
Brooke and I shot one local Zoo City 3 Gun match before both competing in Open Division to work through Brooke learning all three platforms and also for me to get used to my new Genesis Arms Shotgun. Brooke shares how Open Division made it as easy as possible for her to compete in 3 Gun vs. trying to learn the shotgun and quad loading technique in Tac Ops Division.

Brennan Brennecke is a full-time firearms instructor at Vortex Edge and a competitive shooter. Brennan and I sit down to discuss what Vortex Edge is all about, how he got into instructing, and what his day-to-day looks like. Payton Grimes is a professional precision rifle shooter who, in 2022, walked away with the Ladies Open title at the IPRF shoot. Adam is a Steel Challenge competitive shooter who travels the country competing. In this episode, Adam shares how his shooting journey came full circle at one specific competition. He remembers going to his first big match and squadding with some of the biggest names in Steel Challenge. He had been following them online, watching videos of them shoot, and they inspired him to want to get better. Because of how friendly and welcoming they were towards him as a new shooter, he knew he was in the right community that he wanted to be a part of. Years later, Adam now strives to be the kind of person that welcomes new shooters as they did him.
Adam wasn't always pro gun. In fact, he shares how he converted from anti-gun, to being curious about firearms, to now not knowing life without them. Adam is a great role model on and off the range and always has a smile on his face.

Denny Chapman has an adventurous lifestyle and has made many accomplishments in the firearms industry. Denny was a contestant on the first season of Top Shot, was a Stunt Performer, a former mounted police officer, and a former mounted shooting competitor. Denny is now the Media Host for Big Daddy Unlimited so you may have seen his trick shot videos he's filmed.
Denny is genuinely excited about his work in the industry and is one of the friendliest people you'll meet. He spends time in the studio at Big Daddy Unlimited, but on the weekends, he's out shooting USPSA or Steel Challenge. Denny is a positive voice for the Second Amendment and shares a little bit about his beliefs in this episode.

I recently met Austin at the TN IDPA Championship match and had the pleasure of shooting on his squad. It took me a few stages in to notice Austin's burns and his disability with missing most of his left hand. You wouldn't know it by watching him shoot and he wouldn't tell you unless you asked.
Austin is one of the most humble and easy-going people I've ever met. He's had to re-learn how to shoot a gun again and how to play video games. He helps companies test out different products for disabled gamers to give them other opportunities to access their video game controls.
Austin talks about how competitive shooting is part of his physical therapy as he is still on his recovery journey from the burns on his body. He also gives back and is a firearms instructor teaching others how to shoot in his community.
Once again I'm in awe of resilient people who are out there making things happen without letting their disabilities limit their capabilities.

Gals Day at the Range is an event like no other where women of all ages can come out and learn how to shoot in a fun environment. This year's Gals Day was an action-packed event that included shooting pistols, rifles, and shotguns. We ran ladies through a Steel Challenge stage, a USPSA stage, and set them up to shoot shotgun clays and 100-yard rifle steel.
This event was only possible because of sponsors who donated ammunition, supplies, and everything we needed to have a fun time. Hunters HD Gold brought the Magical Mystery Tour van and set up at the event. DoubleStar brought rifles for the ladies to shoot outfitted with Timney Triggers, and also brought a full-auto rifle that many women shot for their first time.
All of the range officers who taught women how to shoot safely volunteered their time to be there. We all had a great time helping out and if you're interested in volunteering or attending, next year's event is on May 13, 2023, at Camp Davy Crockett in East, TN.
Every lady went home with a prize thanks to generous donations from sponsors that included ammunition, gift cards, hats, case gauges, patches, holsters, and more!

Martin is a 9-year-old competitive shooter following in the footsteps of his father, Diego, who grew up shooting on his Olympic team in Guatemala.
Martin just recently switched to shooting USPSA, Carry Optics division. He started out in Steel Challenge, learned the fundamentals of shooting, firearm safety, and is now learning how to shoot on the move and draw from a holster.

David Power is one of the most involved people I've met in the industry. KB and David sit down to talk about the all-new 51Fifty Evolve Rifle that completely eliminates the need for takedown pins making rifle disassembly and building that much easier. KB and David share their story of how they finished the prototype just before Shot Show 2022, cutting it close by less than a month. They knew they had a valuable product and these two entrepreneurs bought their booth before ever having a prototype in their hands. Now that's what we call entrepreneurship.
David also shares his experience in the firearms industry and his new design for rifle scope mounts. Then, the entire 51Fifty rifle team joins in on the podcast and shenanigans ensue!
The EVOLVE line of rifles, pistols, and SBRs is 51Fifty's new line on the time-tested AR platform, just EVOLVED. The AR15 was originally designed back in 1956 and we thought it was time to change things up a little to address what we felt is a weak point. So, we started with the Magwell, flared it out, and shortened it to allow for quicker magazine changes. We then set out to address the pivot pin and takedown pin system.
What we came up with we call the Rapid Action Cam System or R.A.C. for short. This system uses a pivoting cam on a lever similar to a safety selector. It allows for a tighter lock of the upper to the lower receiver. R.A.C. more importantly allows people with dexterity or arthritis issues to more easily service their weapon and allows the adjustment of weight needed to engage/disengage. R.A.C. also allows for quick one-handed changes of the upper receiver to go from a long-barreled setup to a close quarter setup or to change to a different caliber upper.

Corey Scheel has been competing in shooting competitions for some time now and has shot different divisions in USPSA and even dabbled in some 3 gun competitions.
After PCC's started to become popular and Corey began shooting one, he found a problem he knew he could design a solution for. PCC's can have a lot of recoil, making it a challenge to eliminate dot bounce and make accurate follow-up shots quickly. Corey designed the Roller-Delayed Buffer System to reduce the amount of felt recoil and dot bounce shooters experience. His system works in most all PCC's and after trying it myself, I'm hooked!

Jeffrey Abraham is the Owner of Class 3 Firearms Dealer & Training Company, Not Right Shooters. Jeff shares his experience shooting 3 Gun, PRS, Sniper competitions, Run and Guns, USPSA, and more. In the first episode released in 2022, I sit down with Dexter Bradley, a GM USPSA open shooter on the Army Marksmanship Unit Action Shooting Team. Dexter shares his early introduction to firearms and competitive shooting, and how that helped him earn a spot on the AMU team.
Dexter shares about his experience on the team and how he sets goals for himself for the shooting seasons. One of his goals was placing Top 10 in the 2021 USPSA Open Nationals, where he landed 7th place. Officer Jim Kuzak was ambushed in the line of duty and shot 5 times. He was left paralyzed from the waist down, but rather than dwelling on what he could no longer do, he chose to make the most of his second chance at life and inspire many others along the way.
Jim is an adaptive competitive shooter and is testing what's possible for competitors confined to a chair in shooting sports. In this episode, he shares the challenges of shooting in a wheelchair and about the iBot that's about to change everything for him.
Jim shares his perspective on why civilians should carry a gun every day of their lives and stay vigilant. He also talks about the importance of medical training and medical gear.

Thomas Ray is a 16-year-old student angler aspiring to become a professional one day. Thomas goes by @theokayangler on social media, but he is light years ahead of many when it comes to knowing how to wrangle fish.
Thomas is the son of a competitive 3 gunner and shares many of the similarities between competitive shooting and competitive fishing. He talks about different rods, reels, fishing lines, and when you should use one over the other. He talks about the bait he uses the most and the freshwater fish he loves to fight to reel in.
Thomas spends many weekends in fishing tournaments and when he's not competing, he enjoys catching and releasing fish. He is wise beyond his years as he shares the importance of conservation and how we can be better about not polluting our waterways.
I'm personally excited to see what this young man's future holds!

Morgan Leonhardt is a National Champion at just 14 years of age. She has been competing in shooting sports since she was 9 years old, traveling all across the country with her dad, Kevin Leonhardt.
While Morgan got started in 3 Gun and enjoys the sport, her focus has moved to the USPSA Carry Optics division. She has trained with some of the best shooters in the world and puts in hours of dry fire and live fire practice every single week. She shares what her training regimen looks like and how she breaks down every single aspect of shooting a target to focus on what she needs to improve on.
Morgan also just recently placed 5th in Open and took the High Lady title at Fort Benning MultiGun Championship. Her story of why and how she dove into 3 gun is unorthodox, but it got her in the game! We talk about how she's customized guns to her, including shortening the stock on her shotgun to fit her right.

Chase Rains started out in competitive shooting like so many of us did before him, by just showing up to shoot without a clue of what to expect. Chase spent a short time shooting before deciding to take a class and from then on, things changed. He began to understand the game of USPSA and worked to improve his accuracy within his speed limitations.

Brian Nelson began shooting at the early age of 10. As part of his homeschool education, Brian was required to map out travel and lodging to and from shooting events, budget the cost of matches, and more as he and his dad traveled to shoot competitions.
Brian has just about shot every type of shooting competition and discipline there is, and he's good at all of it. He also gives back by putting on the Red Oktober AK match every year.
Brian works for his dad's company, which you might have heard of, Practiscore. He shares his experience working with him and what he's been working on lately that's kept him so busy.

Brady Hardin is a Master Class Single Stack USPSA competitor, but he actually got started shooting in Limited. Brady realized that if he was going to carry a gun every day, that he was going to go get training and be educated on how to use his firearm.
He started shooting IDPA to get familiar with drawing from a holster, being accurate in neutralizing a target, and reloading, all while under the pressure of a timer.
Then Brady found USPSA and has since shot both IDPA and USPSA on a regular basis. He's dabbled a few times in Open and is looking forward to shooting this division more.

Tanner and Aaron met through shooting competitions. These two goobers are now completely inseparable. Invite one, you get both. Tanner shoots Open while Aaron shoots TacOps (for now), but they're still extremely competitive against each other despite the different divisions.
Tanner and Aaron share many fun stories, but one in particular about a road trip that led to staying in the lowest of low motels they've ever found. I've been lucky to have met and shot with both of them and I can say without a doubt, that squadding with them is an experience like no other.
Aaron also puts on matches in Kentucky and makes multigun competitions friendly to the newest of shooters.

Patrick Free just reached his goal of being classified as a Grand Master in Carry Optics this year. He shares his journey of making this classification, the classes he took to learn, and what his goals going into Nationals were.
While Patrick's National competition didn't go as he expected, he shares what he learned from the experience to prepare for next year's Nationals.

Austin started shooting at just 5 years old. In his early youth, he began competing in trapshooting as a junior competitive shooter. He faced a lot of stigmas as a junior shooter with a lot more firearms knowledge than your everyday civilian.

Tim was one of the very first people I met when I moved to Tennessee. At the time, we both were teaching the Tennessee handgun carry classes at the same range. Tim is the Founder of LFX Firearms Training specializing in defensive firearms training.

In 2017, Tim accepted an apprenticeship from Tiger McKee at Shootrite Firearms Academy. Bryce and Blayne Dupuy are two brothers that are taking USPSA by storm. I was lucky enough to meet them and their parents on the road shooting major matches. These two are wise beyond their years, humble, and manage to balance school work, shooting, and family time.

Maylin and I sit down and talk about her experience taking a concealed carry class in Florida, why finding a good instructor is so important, and how to vet some of the classes that are out there. She shares her experience and how she worked her way up to carrying concealed on her body. Maylin just recently got into competitive shooting and has shot two very different style matches - an outlaw CQB style match and an annual USPSA mini-major (or so we like to call it).
She shares her experience of being a brand new competitor, what goals she set for herself, and how supportive her husband has been of her. Sometimes it's easy for us to lose sight of what it was like to be brand new and how much we can still learn about ourselves with each competition we go to.

Adam is very active in the competitive shooting community, traveling to USPSA, IDPA, and Steel Challenge competitions on the weekends and road-tripping home late after they're done.
Adam filled a large void in the market for a quality firearms instructor in South Carolina after realizing a need for advanced instruction and real-life scenario training. Aaron Sellers quickly dove into competitive shooting, but he didn't start with a PCC. In this episode, I ask Aaron about how he started out shooting a 45 caliber pistol in competition to finding a love for PCC.
