This episode/mix was arranged exclusively for a recent show I did in Eugene, Oregon USA. Big up's to the Gaia-Tribe who continue to preserve why we do this thing called electronic music. This is just the beginning of many more to come...

Over the past 10 years I have seen dance music and its technology evolve from analog performances into the digital age. With Serato DJ's preserving the vinyl format, it goes without question that we will continue to utilize the turntable and digital modules to present our craft for another 10 years and beyond.

The age of the digital performer is upon us though, and with this I have been experimenting with different mediums, especially those which involve capturing a set within the Ableton Live platform. This interface literally turns the performer into a producer, and the producer into a performer overnight. With basic production knowledge, a fledgling performer can hone his arrangement skills and quickly create digital ready tracks or mixes to distribute over the net. Likewise, producers who have traditionally stayed within the realms of the studio are now finding themselves venturing out to perform on their laptops with midi interfaces and other compatible gear to produce memorable shows.

The simple ease of use within this software allows for creativity to literally flow uninterrupted...

The Able-Technolgy podcast and its subsequent episodes/mixes are only one example of utilizing this interface's powerful features. For this mix I performed simple editing and automation to existing tracks contained within my music library, and added sporadic production through out the mix to enhance the flow.

The more I work with Live... the more technical each consecutive episode/mix will be, but for the time being please sit back and enjoy the premiere episode of the Able-Technology series podcasts ( A Funky House Mix )

Well it took almost 5 weeks to produce this mix, but I think you'll agree after listening, that this one may have been well worth the wait.

As I continue to move progressively forward with the Ableton Live interface, I continue to discover new ways to be creative within the mix. This time around I leaned more towards using tracks from the Electronic Breakbeat spectrum of dance music.

There are 18 tracks intermingled for this 60 minute mix and production which include favorites like Violet's "Burn the Elastic", of which I added effects plus some fresh vocal samples. I also managed to mash up the Beastie Boys "Intergalactic" with some new school beats and enhanced Chicken Lip's "He not in". If you listen closely you might also hear a snippit of Planet Rock as well.

This is by far one of the most entertaining productions I've done to date, and it was a welcome return to the Breakbeat genre, of which I haven't mixed an entire set for close to 10 years. It brought back some great memories of my early days of clubbing, and at the same time, allowed me to re-work some classic songs layering some newer productions over them.

This isn't a classic breakbeat mix however, as there are also some new hit wonders in the set as well... keep an ear out for them and enjoy!

This mix was done the old fashioned way... It's a straight turntable mix...No Ableton, No Serato, No Mp3's, No Wav files, nada... it's clean, it's simple and to the point. I wanted to post this piece to demonstrate some performance skills and pay homage to the old turntable media. I miss the roundness of vinyl, I miss the warmth of its sound, I miss the fidelity it produces, but honestly, I don't miss the price tag of the vinyl format. I remember dropping hundreds of dollars monthly just to put together a decent set... Thankfully those days have gone by the wayside, and putting together smart sets don't cost as much anymore. To further add, production vehicles such as Ableton, have allowed us to put our OWN music in our mixes... NOW that I like even more!
