Week 1 of A Reason To Celebrate.
The nativity story is familiar to many. But just imagine being there while it was happening. Joseph, in the center of the story, was afraid and must have been confused and shaken to discover that Mary, his betrothed, was already pregnant. An angel appeared to him in a dream, saying this pregnancy was by the Holy Spirit. In fact, Mary had become pregnant to fulfill a prophecy spoken by Isaiah: that the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). Immanuel means “God with us”—God had come down to mankind. Joseph’s story shows us three ways that we can still experience Immanuel today.

Week 6 of Nearness
God fulfilled this promise through Jesus. Everything that the prophets spoke about the promised Redeemer was fulfilled in Christ. In Him, we receive our salvation, our victory, and all the blessings that God has for us. In this podcast, we will look at how God works to fulfill His covenant with His people.

They even felt like God had abandoned them. However, God remains faithful—to fulfill His promises, to the covenant He made with His people, and to His own character. After everything Israel had done and been through, God referred to them as redeemed, mine, precious, and honored.

While we don’t know when these will specifically happen, the letter reminds us of who we are in Christ and the disposition we must take: We are to wait patiently and be sober-minded, continually building one another up in the faith. In this lesson, we will look at some of the final instructions these leaders gave to the church in Thessalonica.

While the first part of this letter recounts all that had happened so far, the rest focuses on instructions for the believers, especially as they waited in hope for Christ’s glorious return. Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy urged the church to walk in holiness, love, and peace, fueled by a desire to please God alone.

Acts 17 gives us the account of how the church in Thessalonica was birthed. While waiting for the fulfillment of the coming kingdom of Christ, the church at that time encountered persecution and affliction. Yet, they were called to live, serve, and persevere in community. Today, we will look at what it means to be in church community while we wait for Christ’s glorious return together.

Isaiah spoke this prophecy after God had already pronounced judgment on His people because of their pride, arrogance, self centeredness, and acts of social injustice. To bring judgment on Israel, God used a different nation: Assyria. God would then punish Assyria as well because of their wickedness and refusal to turn to Him. However, God showed His faithfulness in preserving a remnant for Himself from Israel. Today, we will look at some things we can learn from the judgment on the people of God.

After His resurrection, when He ascended back to heaven, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would also come to His people. This means that the kind of Spirit-empowerment described in Isaiah 11 is made available to believers today.

Isaiah’s vision of God shows His holiness—His purity, sinlessness, and separateness from His fallen creation. God is so holy that the seraphim, heavenly creatures, covered their faces in His presence. They called to each other, “Holy, holy, holy.” This declaration signifies the otherness of God. He is nothing like us; He is far above and beyond us. Seeing ourselves starkly in the light of this holiness should cause us to bow down in worship.

Through Isaiah, God declared He would radically expose where His people were and their blatant abandonment of Him. He did not do this because of a selfish or possessive jealousy; on the contrary, He is jealous for His people because He wants the best for them. He desired the Israelites to understand that the things they prioritized and valued were empty. Instead of experiencing the life that they could have in God, they trusted in foreign idols, imported military support, magicians, and charms—things that were substitutes for God in their lives, that took their trust, time, energy, and resources. In response to this, God declared that He would take away the things His people trusted in to save them, to reveal that He was the only one they needed to look to.

God gave Isaiah a picture of what it would be like in His kingdom. In this vision, the kingdom of God was depicted as a mountain of the Lord that nations would flow to for peace and salvation. They would even speak to others and invite them to go up to His mountain—to the house of God—to learn His ways and walk in His paths. This prophecy reveals how God gathers His covenant people from different nations, showing that His covenant goes beyond Israel to all the nations of the world.

The Israelites thought fasting would give them some leverage against God: “If we fast, then You must answer our prayers.” God, through the prophet Isaiah, challenges this view. With His own “if-then” statements, God shows how fasting is the action of a righteous people living out their faith. When believers live out their faith, they are salt and light to the world, and it is felt and experienced by those around them.
