US Representative George Santos, a New York Republican, has pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements to Congress. He is accused of deceiving donors, stealing from his campaign, and lying about being a millionaire. Santos is also alleged to have cheated to collect unemployment benefits he didn’t deserve. Despite calls to resign, Santos has refused to drop his reelection bid. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. House Republican leaders are taking a wait-and-see approach, saying Santos is innocent until proven guilty.
