In this episode of Oldish: Conversations on Aging in the 21st Century, co-hosts Dr. Janet Price and Gregg Kaloust are once again joined by their good friend Leslie Ross-Degnan for another installment of The Oldish Book Club. This time they read and discuss The Woman Who Met Herself, by Laura Pearson. It's a fascinating look at Oldishness through the eyes of identical twins who only discover each other in their 60s. It's a fine novel, and one we all enjoyed reading.

You can find this, and other books we read and love, in the Oldish Book Store on Bookshop.org. If you buy any book after clicking on this link Oldish will get a small commission, and an independent book store of your choosing will get a percentage of the cover price. It's a great way to support Oldish and your local independent book store.

Also, Leslie was this year's winner of Ann Whitford Paul Award for the most promising fiction picture book, for her story LITTLE CROW.

Leslie Ross-Degnan is the winner of the Most Promising Fiction Picture Book Manuscript Grant for her story, LITTLE CROW. Comfortable writing poetry, she needs just 243 words to tell Little Crow’s day from waking up to falling asleep. Like all children, Little Crow tries to do what bigger crows do, which leads to difficulties that will make for fun illustrations. Children will love the musical language and identify with the desire to do the same as big people. With the added perk of a counting story, this will make a delightful read to young audiences.

Co-hosts Dr. Janet Price and Gregg Kaloust sat down with dear friend Chris Balch to talk about our trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp with Everest to End Duchenne to raise awareness and funds for research to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We are stll hoping for a cure. We hope you enjoy our conversation.

Gregg Kaloust is writing a memoir of that trek and others he made with Chris, Everest to End Duchenne, and other friends. He is posting excerpts along with other writings on his substack at https://greggkaloust.substack.com/publish/home

You can learn more about Duchenne and efforts to find a cure at https://everesttoendduchenne.org. There's a link there to the documentary of that first trek.

In this episode co-hosts Dr. Janet Price and Gregg Kaloust follow up on our recent episode published after the debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. We wondered in that episode whether they were old or Oldish, and concluded that they must be Oldish. Imagine our surprise when it became obvious Joe Biden must have listened and concluded he is old, after all. In this episode we take full credit for Joe Biden deciding to pull out of the race. We plan to send a link to that episode to the Trump campaign in hopes that he might reach a similar conclusion about himself!

Tune in next time when we sit down with Dr Gloria Horsley and Dr Frank Powers, two psychotherapists who met online on the dating site Silver Singles, fell in love, amd wrote a book together. It’s Open to Love, the secrets of senior dating. if you are oldish and exploring, or considering, the brave new world of online dating, you’ll find this book a valuable resource, and we’ll bet you enjoy our conversation with them as much as we did.

In this episode of our continuing series The Dinking Game, linking pickleball and real life, co-hosts Dr Janet Price and Gregg Kaloust have a wide ranging conversation about how important it is to communicate clearly with your partner while playing pickleball and in the rest of your life, too.

Gregg is very happy with his new Tyrol Pickleball shoes. Tyrol is the only company that makes a shoe just for pickleball, and they are crazy comfortable and supportive, just like your playing partner. And the Vibram sole really stands up to the rough surface of the court. If you want to take care of your feet on the court, check them out at Tyrol Pickleball (note: if you purchase a pair or more after clicking this link we get a small commission. This of it as an easy way to support Oldish).

In this episode in the Oldish series The Dinking Game, co-hosts Dr Janet Price and Gregg Kaloust have a lively conversation about the Transition Zone in Pickleball, that area, sometimes called No Man's Land, between the back line and the non-volley zone (aka The Kitchen), and relate it to real life, and to Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön's Groundlessness. Get into your ready position, and give it a listen!

Dr Janet gives a shoutout to Erin McHugh, author of the bestseller Pickleball is Life, with whom we had a fun conversation about pickleball and...life, last year. If you haven't yet, listen now.

Gregg is very excited about his new Tyrol Pickleball shoes. They are lightweight, sturdy, comfortable, and with their exclusive Vibram soles should last much longer on the outdoor courts than his old shoes did. You can check them out at Tyrol Pickleball. (note, if you buy them after clicking on this link Oldish gets a small commission to help offset our costs of production).

In the latest episode of the Oldish Book Club co-hosts Dr Janet Price and Gregg Kaloust sit down with our friend Leslie Ross-Degnan to talk about The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules by Swedish author Catharina Ingelman-Sunberg. It's the first in the League of Pensioners series. It's a rollicking heist novel about a group of Oldish Pensioners who break out of the retirement home into...prison! It's entertaining, insightful, and quintessentially Oldish.

Leslie Ross-Degnan enjoyed years in the classroom, loving picture books with young children. Now, in her oldish years, she spends time writing children’s poetry & picture books, as well as writing reviews of new picture books. You can find her reviews on Amazon, Good Reads, and Barnes and Noble sites. Leslie also enjoys reading adult literature. When she heard about our podcast, she asked us if we’d be interested in reviewing and discussing grown up books with ‘oldish' characters. We said we were. This is our 3rd book review and discussion with Leslie.
