When you believe life is happening to you, itās easy to feel powerless, stuck, and trapped in survival mode. But when you shift that belief to life happening for you, everything begins to change.
In this powerful episode of Female Fluence, we explore the mindset shift from victimhood to personal agency, from surviving to thriving. Resilience becomes the foundationānot because life becomes easier, but because your response to life becomes stronger.
Dr. Patricia Smith shares her extraordinary journey from being abandoned as a child in Jamaica, experiencing homelessness, and living on the streets, to becoming the CEO of a multimillion-dollar home healthcare company in the United States. Her story is a living example of how persistence, resilience, and hope can transform even the most painful beginnings into purpose-driven leadership.
This conversation dives deep into identity, mindset, leadership, healing, and what it truly means to reclaim your power and create a meaningful lifeāno matter where you start.
Key Takeaways
⨠Resilience is built through perspective, not circumstances
Learning to ask āWhat can I learn from this?ā shifts you from survival mode into growth and self-leadership.
šŖ You are not defined by your trauma
Your past may shape you, but it does not get to decide your future unless you allow it to.
š§ Mindset shifts create momentum
Moving from a victim mindset to a creator mindset unlocks clarity, confidence, and long-term success.
š± Persistence is a practical tool, not just a mindset
Daily choices, discipline, and belief in yourself compound over time and create real transformation.
š Leadership is born through lived experience
Adversity can become your greatest qualification when you allow it to inform how you serve and lead others.
Dr. Patricia Smith is the CEO of Sweet P Home Care Inc. and a powerful voice in resilience-driven leadership. Raised in Jamaicaās child-care system after being abandoned by her parents, Patricia experienced homelessness, instability, and unimaginable adversity. Despite the odds, she refused to give up on herself.
Through persistence and determination, she rose academically and professionally, ultimately becoming the CEO of a successful home healthcare organization in the United States. Patricia is also the author of IPersist, a book centered on hope, resilience, and personal transformation.

Photography has the power to reveal something weāve been taught to hide ā our own bodies. It shows us that nudity doesnāt have to live under the weight of taboo, shame, or vanity. Instead, it can spark confidence, acceptance, and radical self-love.
Ever wondered what happens when women truly see themselves through fresh eyesāpast the flaws and into the grace, strength, and beauty they naturally hold?
We often treat nude and naked as if they mean the same thing. They donāt.
Nude is the human form ā artistic, graceful, unapologetic.
Naked is raw ā vulnerable, exposed, unprotected.
And for many women, that distinction matters deeply.
For generations, culture has tied nudity to shame and silence, especially for women. Weāve been told to cover up, shrink, and edit ourselves. No wonder standing unclothed feels terrifying ā it forces us to confront not just our reflection but the conditioning stitched into us.
Boudoir becomes the rebellion.
A reclamation.
A choice.
My guest today, Liz Hansen, helps women redesign their relationship with visibility, nudity, and self-expression. She reminds us that what weāve been taught is ātabooā can be transformed into power ā if we choose it.
Todayās conversation explores the difference between exposure that diminishes us and expression that uplifts us.
This isnāt vanity.
Itās visibility.
Itās liberation.
Itās the freedom to be seen fully and lovingly ā by yourself first.
About Liz Hansen
Liz Hansen is the photographer and owner of Chicago Boudoir Photography, a boutique studio empowering women to celebrate their lives, bodies, and relationships through beautiful portraits. With nearly 2,000 women photographed, Liz blends artistry with emotional intelligence to create deeply transformative experiences.
She holds an MA in Education, runs a million-dollar photography studio, and teaches photographers inside her coaching program, Million Dollar Studio Program. Her work has been featured on the TEDx stage, NPR, the Chicago Reader, and with the Association of International Boudoir Photographers.
Key Takeaways from This Episode
1. Shame around nudity isnāt inherent ā itās taught.
2. Naked vs. nude matters ā one can feel threatening, the other freeing.
3. Visibility is a healing practice.
4. The ātaboo taxā is real.
5. Small daily acts rebuild body trust.
6. Empowering nudity has boundaries ā and theyāre personal.
7. Boudoir is not about the photos ā itās about ownership.
8. Success is built on clarity, confidence, and courage.
9. Vulnerability isnāt weakness ā itās a doorway to deeper freedom.
When a woman says sheās ānot ready,ā Liz meets her with compassion, tools, and gentle self-inquiry. Readiness isnāt perfection ā itās willingness.
Lizās message is simple:
You donāt need to change anything about yourself to be worthy of celebration.
Boudoir isnāt about exposure ā itās about empowerment.
Itās about choosing what expression feels true for you.
Our bodies hold stories: pregnancies, surgeries, scars, triumphs, aging, and evolution. But our worth has never changed. Itās time to see ourselves with softness, admiration, and ownership. A boudoir session can be the first step ā not into vulnerability, but into liberation.
Liz, thank you for joining us on Female Fluence.

Ever catch yourself thinking, āWhy is this happening to me?ā Itās a common questionāespecially when life feels heavy. But what if shifting just one word could shift everything?
Ask instead: āWhy is this happening for me?ā
That change in language moves us from victimhood into ownership. From feeling powerless to becoming deeply empowered. Itās not about loving the hard stuffāitās about learning from it. Adopting a growth mindset allows us to look for the lesson, the insight, and the strength within even the most painful moments.

A positive mindset is your most powerful asset
Every challenge carries a messageālearn to listen
Create a life by design, not by default
Healing begins when you believe you're worthy of it
Donāt wait for conditions to make you happyāchoose joy now

Betrayal in marriage is a shattering experience like an "atomic bomb" that detonates within a relationship, highlighting the intense pain and damage it causes. This analogy effectively conveys the feeling of complete devastation and loss of trust.
Discovery Day and Its Pain: The concept of "Discovery Day" aptly captures the moment of revelation, often accompanied by crushing words like "I have met someone else." This emphasizes the emotional weight of discovering the betrayal and the immediate grief it triggers.
Research shows the prevalence of infidelity, with 15% of wives and 25% of husbands reporting extramarital sex, adds a layer of understanding to the widespread nature of this experience. Undoubtedly, betrayal impacts self-esteem. Highlighting how betrayal hurts due to its impact on self-esteem is crucial. The act of someone close violating your trust can trigger feelings of worthlessness and insecurity.
On the podcast today, my guest, Vanessa Cardenas, is someone who overcame betrayal, and her message of healing and transformation offers hope and guidance to those experiencing similar pain. She is a Betrayal Recovery Specialist helping those who have suffered from the devastation of betrayal, rise from the ashes and recover their true identity. The distinction between learning from betrayal and accepting blame is essential. It emphasizes that understanding the situation does not equate to accepting responsibility for the actions of others.
She offers the reminder to be gentle with oneself, allow time for healing, and grieve before moving forward, underscoring the importance of self-compassion and patience during the recovery process.
Overall, this episode effectively addresses the complexity of betrayal, offering empathy and providing a starting point for those seeking to heal and rebuild their lives.

Are you ready to feel inspired? In this episode of Female Fluence, we are privileged to have Doina Oncel, a remarkable leader, to share her inspiring journey. From shelter life to becoming one of Canadaās most powerful leaders, Dionaās story is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Despite this daunting predicament, it is crucial to remember that rising from homelessness to homeownership is a realistic possibility. Countless individuals have successfully transitioned from a state of destitution to self-sufficiency, demonstrating the potential for overcoming such hardships. The situation becomes even more complicated when you factor in the additional challenge of abuse. Too often, victims who leave their abusive partner due to domestic abuse often experience homelessness.
With a stable job and affordable housing secured, financial education is a key factor in maintaining and eventually improving one's situation. Taking classes on budgeting, financial planning, and homeownership can be invaluable. Many local community centers, credit unions, and non-profit organizations offer these services free of charge. This is where a financial advisor comes in! As you will hear in the episode, Doina is a licensed financial advisor. Doina also shares that there are financial advisors who are willing to help those in need at no upfront cost to assist in stabilizing the financial life of the client.
Certainly, this journey is not easy and it requires a great deal of determination, discipline, and patience. However, with the right resources and support, rising from homelessness to homeownership is not only possible, but also achievable. For those who experienced the challenges of being a struggling immigrant, surviving an abusive relationship, or enduring life in a homeless shelter, Doinaās story is a powerful reminder that dreams can be realized by following the inner voice that guides and inspires us.

We all experience occasional anxiety - it is a normal part of life. However, it morphs into a problem when it starts disrupting daily routines and affecting overall wellbeing. People with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive, persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. This requires a proactive approach to manage and reduce it. Start by identifying triggers - what situations or thoughts spark anxiety. Focus on healthy lifestyle habits like regular exercise and a balanced diet. Learn relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing or yoga. Todayās modern lifestyle adds another layer to the situation as well - our technology. Growing up in a hyper-connected world through technology readily available at our fingertips, can often evoke intense feelings of isolation and loneliness. A report states that 48% of Generation Z and 44% of Millennials report some mental anxiety and this is largely due to the impact of technology. Remember, adequate sleep is crucial for maintaining mental health as well, so ensure you are getting enough rest. Seek professional help if required - therapists, psychiatrists, and support groups can provide valuable guidance and strategies to manage anxiety effectively. This generation faces chronic stress from many factors, including school shootings, student debt, joblessness, and politics. Remember, it's okay to ask for help and to take care of your mental health. After all, taking care of your mind is as important as taking care of your body. Anxiety levels are significantly elevated in Generation Z and millennials, therefore they feel a sense of urgency to discover strategies to reduce stress levels and develop effective coping mechanisms for their everyday lives.
This is where Dr. Lauren Cook comes in. Dr. Cook is a clinical psychologist, speaker, and author. She helps people strive to live their lives in accordance with their values. Dr. Lauren is passionate about bringing mental health to people of all ages and identities, particularly in the workplace (including when thatās from home!) There is a remarkable power that arises when you intentionally pursue your dreams. However, a lot of people become bogged down with self-sabotaging excuses that stunt their progress. The most common excuses are āIām too old to pursue my dreams.ā or āIām too busy with the kids to pursue my dreams.ā The truth is, there is never an ideal time to go after our dreams. There will never be enough time in the day, we have to intentionally make the time. There will never be the amount of support from others to motivate us, day in and day out. We have to motivate ourselves. I am reminded of a famous quote by John Wooden, "Don't give up on your dreams, or your dreams will give up on you."
Regrettably, many individuals abandon their dreams and aspirations. Today, I dare you to dream big, and never give up⦠no matter how old you are and no matter what discouragements you may face. This is the most vital gift you can give to yourself. My guest today, Angie Wells, is a beautiful testament to this.
Angie has successfully led the makeup department on numerous film and TV shows, collaborating with world-renowned directors as well as A-list actors in Hollywood, Europe, and New York City. She contributed to nearly 100 episodes of the popular show ā Blackish''. Angie has received two Emmy nominations and a MUAH Guild Award nomination. Her career took a remarkable turn when she was asked to design and do the makeup for the showā Mudboundā in 2017, followed by āHarrietā in 2019. Angie's journey in music began in an intimate Parisian supper club in Paris, where she joined a trio for a few tunes and was met with explosive applause from the audience. From there, her career in Jazz was sparked. Angie is a remarkable testament and inspiration to anyone who may be feeling like their dreams are being snuffed out. And to make matters even better, Angie seamlessly combines consistent, hard work with a glamorous touch! Tune in today for the motivation you may need to powerfully pursue your dreams!

Do you ever feel like your personal development journey has plateaued and like youāre not gaining traction? You may have devoted yourself to the path of well-being, but something feels missing. Or maybe you feel like thereās something looming beneath the surface, but you donāt want to face the trauma because it feels too big. To achieve true well-being, addressing and processing past traumas is essential. Our bodies retain the effects of trauma until we safely process it. Overcoming trauma can be a lifelong journey, but thankfully, healing is absolutely possible.
On todayās episode of Female Fluence, my guest is Demarra West, a licensed therapist since 2010, who generously gave us immense insight on how to achieve well-being and process past trauma. Demarra has endured eight out of the ten trauma incidents measured by the Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale. This led her to explore various wellness modalities that have not only facilitated her own healing but have also created more peace, joy, and abundance in every area of her life. Not only is she a Registered Yoga Teacher, but she is also certified in Yoga as a Peace Practice and Trauma Sensitive. Demarra is also a Reiki master, trained in EFT therapy, and the founder of āBe Well Beautiful Womanā, which provides accessible wellness and business support for female leaders and entrepreneurs. Demarra pulls from her many years of experience while working with clients, but also, from her own experience with years of enduring trauma herself. The healing that has taken place in Demarraās life thereafter is remarkable. This is an episode full of practical guidance on how to process past trauma and achieve well-being ā be sure to tune in!

What distinguishes those who rebound effectively from adversity? They refuse to be overwhelmed by negative emotions or thoughts. Instead, they take the time to process their experiments and then resume their forward momentum. Their mental resilience propels them to seek opportunities instead of linger in despair. Adversity is a potent teacher, offering a valuable opportunity to learn from mistakes and gain insights that enhance the likelihood of future success while fostering a sense of peace with the circumstances.
On todayās episode, we are fortunate to have Alana Stott as my guest. Alanaās journey has been one of remarkable resilience and transformation. She confronted a traumatic injury during her challenging teenage years, marked by isolation as well as sexual abuse, neglect, and self-loathing. Today, Alana is an author, consultant, speaker, producer, CEO, and philanthropist. Her primary focus is on supporting vulnerable women, children, and veterans and combating human trafficking. She empowers women to excel in all aspects of their lives, firmly believing that nothing is insurmountable when coupled with the right mindset and a robust support system.
Her latest book, 2023, " She Who Dares,ā is a powerful memoir that chronicles her path of self-discovery, revealing unwavering resilience, boundless optimism, advocacy, and a refusal to be defined by labels and constraints. Alana is also the visionary behind multiple brands aimed at empowering women and children to live their fullest lives. In addition to her literary pursuits, Alana Stott dedicates her time to coordinating evacuations of women in Afghanistan, taking down sex traffickers, and participating in war crimes tribunals. Her tireless advocacy has garnered significant recognition, including the prestigious title of Member of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), awarded to her by King Charles, in acknowledgment of her outstanding contributions to supporting vulnerable women and raising awareness about mental health.

Do you ever wish you could step out from the sidelines and learn to shine? You may have a message you want to share with the world, invent something no one has ever seen, or turn the side hustle into a full time business. But as you know, life is all about experiencing the ebbs and flows of the human experience and with that comes degrees of success and failure. However, abandoning your dreams represents one of the simplest and most certain ways to ensure failure. We cannot succumb to surrender when challenges arise because when we lose hope, when the fear of failure looms, when the path to success appears uncertain, we give up.
Our dreams were put in our hearts for a reason and itās our responsibility to bring them to life. The phrase āgive upā should not coexist in your mindset. Itās a recipe for self sabotage. The underlying reality is that when you contemplate giving up, there exists untapped inner strength within you, a reserve you may not have fully realized. Thatās why, during those moments of despair when we find ourselves in a dark place, itās essential to remind ourselves of our strengths and untapped potential ready to be explored!
We are in for a treat because Ahyiana Angel is the incredible guest on my podcast today. Ahyiana Angel is the CEO of Mayzie Media & as a result of her own career transitions, from NBA Publicist to Author, as well as the host of the Switch, Pivot or Quit podcast. Her work has impacted corporate spaces like Google and has been featured by Forbes, Entrepreneur & Create, and Cultivate. She is also the author of the book ā Quit Playing Smallā which is a book that will inspire action, evoke emotion, and spark ideas to achieve greatness. If you are an overachiever, yet feel as though what you do is never enough or you somehow don't deserve your rewards, this episode is for you! Many of us can relate to this shared experience; despite our numerous accomplishments, we often grapple with self-limiting beliefs that hinder our ability to embrace our success. Instead of basking in our achievements and feeling proud, weāre plagued by the nagging feeling that weāre somehow deceiving others. Questions like. " Do I truly deserve this? Did I genuinely achieve this? Do I possess the necessary knowledge?ā These niggling thoughts become our constant companions and it can stunt our growth in a major way.
This phenomenon is known as āImposter Syndrome.ā Imposter Syndrome is an internal psychological struggle where we feel like a fraud in certain aspects of our lives, even in the face of undeniable success. This persistent fear of being exposed to fraud can profoundly affect high achievers.
Today, I have a delightful guest on my show, Sarah Khambatta ā who is trained and certified in Leadership and Life Coaching through the International Coach Federation. Over the years, she began consulting and co-creating with various leaders and private clientele. She has worked with many business leaders and business executives. Over the span of her coaching career, she has noticed many overachieving individuals (including herself) battle with Imposter Syndrome. Through this, she has been able to develop a clear path to break through this self sabotaging syndrome and thrive on the other side!
At the same time, she serves on the Los Angeles Chapter Board of ICF and has trained as an Organizational Systems Coach. Subsequently, She won the global award for ICF Chapter recognition for Leadership, Diversity, and Innovation. Later, she formed her own company, Dreams Transform Reality, where she helps people get a clear vision of the work they love and overcome Imposter Syndrome.

In the world of health problems, a topic often overshadowed is Rare Diseases. These conditions are classified as rare if they affect fewer than 200,000 people at any given time in the United States. Astonishingly, there are over 6,800 distinct rare diseases in existence. A heartbreaking statistic reveals that approximately two-thirds of Americans suffering from rare diseases are children. The truth is rare diseases touch all of us in some way, as we are all connected to someone affected by one.
Rare diseases constitute a significant and often overlooked public health concern. Shockingly, nearly 95% of these 7,000 known rare diseases lack any form of treatment or cure. Itās a stark reality that about 30,000 million people in the United States- half of them children- live with a rare disease. Additionally, these diseases are often chronic, worsening over time and posing life-threatening challenges. Furthermore, arriving at a correct diagnosis can be an agonizingly long and frustrating journey, sometimes taking years of testing and enduring misdiagnoses.
The discussion will take an emotional turn today, as we talk with our special guest, Cristol Barrett OāLoughlin. Her personal journey has been marked by the devastating loss of her three older brothers to a rare disease.
As a founder & CEO of Angel Aid Cares, Cristol is fiercely passionate about providing social, emotional, physical, and financial relief to caregivers, particularly mothers of children with rare diseases. A former UCLA instructor, she co-founded the advertising firm The Craftsman Agency and is humbled to advise global brands like NBA, Disney, Fox, Cisco Systems, and Google. During her tenure at IBM Life Sciences, she helped accelerate advancements in biotechnology. She has been a powerful speaker at TEDX , where she talks about the importance of Caring for Caregivers, which I highly recommend for everyone to watch.

Female rivalry often occurs when a woman uses her power to keep undermining, mistreating, or unfairly competing with another woman. Unfortunately, as women, we often internalize these experiences and blame ourselves. In our patriarchal society, there has been a long history of internalized sexism that has led many women to see each other as competition. Itās time to break the cycle of women against women and embrace collaboration over competition instead!
**In this robust conversation with Dr. Backstrom, we conclude that collaborative confidence empowers women to translate self-awareness into meaningful action. This approach amplifies leadership confidence and maximizes our impact. Dr. Backstrom emphasizes that every one of us is a strong, capable, and talented leader, and it is crucial to nurture our own remarkable abilities while encouraging other women to do the same.

Parenting is the most challenging job in the world, and as we all know⦠we donāt get a manual. On top of it all, due to social media, we are constantly shaming ourselves because we are our worst critics. We look carefully at the filtered lives of others through the lens of social media and feel immediate pressure to create the perfect family.
Itās time for a reality check. In this episode, we are expanding on that reality check and setting aside this illusion of perfection. We actually need to set boundaries for our children. Boundaries teach children self-discipline, safety, and coping skills. Spend time with your children, but ensure they understand that your time is valuable too, and you canāt just drop everything to meet their every demand. This, in return, will make them appreciate & respect you more. Model your desired behavior because your children constantly observe you by showing gratitude!

In todayās episode, we will delve into the profound significance of embracing and acknowledging the full spectrum of our emotions, both positive and negative. We will unveil the detrimental consequences that arise from suppressing our feelings in an attempt to project strength, ultimately causing harm to ourselves. It takes immense strength to admit when we are not feeling strong and instead confront those profoundly difficult emotions.

Women are taught from a young age that if we say yes to everything and do everything perfectly, we will live a fulfilling and happy life. This is far from the truth. In fact, the more we put on our plates, the more distant we become from what is truly important to us. Society tells us that we should balance our work life and home life till we run ourselves to the ground. My guest, Dr. Sohee Jun, believes differently and has some great words of wisdom to back it up. In this episode, we discuss topics from her book, and she gives simple tools to shift our mindset from having to do it all to choosing our priorities from a place of our values during different seasons of our life. I know you are going to enjoy this episode!Ā
