Another episode in The End and the Beginning series.

Jesus revealed the end of the law and the beginning of grace in what He said and did. We saw new pictures of this in stories we’ve known and read over and over. There are so many examples of this, but we narrowed it down to some of our favorites, and they are amazing and sweet!

It is true that Christians tend to stay in abusive marriages longer than non-Christians. We believe much of the reason is unreasonable and reckless “biblical” views. In this episode we share some of what we’ve come across in our ministry. Although some scenarios are extreme, and some may sound frivolous, the underlying problems are the same. 1) Too often there is more concern for the institution of marriage than there is for the abused people within the marriage, and 2) there is more pressure put on the wife to “fix” the problems, as in to submit more, pray more, and be more patient – sometimes even unto death.

“Men lead. Women follow. The Bible tells us so.” But does it? Could the idea of complementarianism (another word for patriarchy) come from poor translations or twisting of scripture? Did Jesus value and elevate women, or did He treat them as “less than?”   As an added bonus, Sonya Brunner stuck around and tackled this topic with us – and let’s say she had some questions…!

For more on this subject we suggest The Making of Biblical Womanhood by Beth Allison Barr, On Purpose by Julie Zine Coleman, the work of Marg Mowczko, and Sheila Wray Gregoire, author of The Great Sex Rescue.

Sonya describes herself as a “First Responder,” and she is – to women in situations that most of us can’t imagine. She has come to the aid of abused, imprisoned, addicted, and trafficked women and girls. Her own personal experiences have made her a passionate and safe advocate for them. In the episode Sonya focuses on how children are at risk, and what we can do to protect them.

If you’ve been in an evangelical church for any length of time, you are sure to have heard some version of “The Sinner’s Prayer.” You may even have gone down to the alter and prayed it yourself. Did you know it’s a fairly recent creation, traced back to the early 20th century? How does it fit with what we see in the New Testament and, more importantly, in the ministry of Jesus?

Hebrews 11 lists some of the “heroes of the faith.” We tend to think they were super special and had little to no flaws. But is that the whole story? We don’t think so! Today we get into the rest of their stories, and realize they were just people, who sometimes made some not-so-great choices.

On today's episode of The Three - Shiny Happy People

This documentary has been rocking peoples' worlds since it came out recently. Almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by the Bill Gothard IBLP movement, and many of those have been damaged to some extent. We give our reviews, talk about how some of these teachings still linger in evangelical churches, and also find there is hope and grace in the aftermath.

What we hear from others and what we say to ourselves becomes a narrative about our life – our story. We start to believe these things, and live them out even if they are not true (and a lot of them aren’t). But do you know that you have a new story? God has given us a beautiful story!

Words are powerful, and words of affirmation are words we all long to hear. We can be pretty good at affirming others, but pretty bad at affirming ourselves. If we believe what God says about us, why can’t we affirm ourselves with the truth? Why do we allow the judgement of others to frame our image of ourselves? How does God affirm us?

In today’s episode we finish up the Soul Care series with the often ignored part – the body. But even if it tends to be an afterthought, our bodies will remind us that we need to take care of it. It also stores any trauma we have experienced in our lives. Our bodies are important to pay attention to!

In this episode we begin to unpack the “3x3” in soul care, beginning with the spirit. We are three-part beings, just as God is three – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It’s important to understand how all three parts help us experience wholeness and oneness in our lives. The spirit is the essence of us, the core and source of our very identity.

Today we spend some time looking at Nicodemus. There’s not a lot written in the bible about him, but what there is prompted an interesting discussion. “God is writing a story of rescue and redemption…and Jesus… wrote Himself into that story.” These words are from the devotional, The Chosen – 40 Days with Jesus. In this episode, we use this as a jumping off point to explore a recurring theme – from the Old Testament to the New: humanity rebelled against God - God made a miraculous way for righteousness to be restored - God gave grace to the people who believed.

Trust. It's how we relate to each other and to God. You can't have a real relationship without trust. Trust isn't just a theory or mindset. In today's episode we go back to "Trust for Today" and talk about what trust enables us to experience, how it determines our choices, and how it reveals who we really are.

Yep, today for the podcast, that was where we were. We came in with nada. So we sat down at the microphones and just started talking. And it came. A lot of what we do here at the office most days: laughter, silliness, honesty, and why and how much we love being all together in this place. What we want to share with all of you, whether you are in our podcast community or in person locally. We are a safe place, an encouraging group of people, and definitely a fun place to be! So our "nothing" turned into a whole lot of "something!"

Let's talk a little more about grace (you know we never get enough)! What can grace do for us individually? We turn again to "Trust for Today" for our conversation starter. We dig into statements like "Grace can redirect my anger into concern," "Grace can release dormant love," and "Grace can cause me to work harder than by any other means."  Deep thoughts give way to some ridiculousness...of course. "Trust for Today" is one of our favorite devotionals, written by one of our favorite people, John Lynch, along with Bill Thrall and Bruce McNicol. In it, Sharon found "To Lent or Not to Lent" and we thought it was an interesting take on an Easter tradition. While virtually all believers are aware of it and what it represents, it is observed in different ways. Is it mandatory? Profitable? What does it mean? As we often do, we end up in unexpected rabbit trails!

God says He is our Father, but how do we know? The Bible is full of stories of His power, His wrath, His judgment - from our perspective, anyway. But where can we find pictures of Him as Father, or even as our Daddy? Relax, child, they're in there! In this episode, we share some of them with you.

(And there might be a little announcement of what we've been up to lately - and an opportunity for you to become a part of it.)

Leaders and followers. Husbands and wives. Government officials and the rest of us. Hierarchy is a system of the world, not of the Church. Yet it has permeated organized religion, and therefore marriages, relationships, and the way we live our lives. The opposite of hierarchy is oneness - God's design for us. Where did it start and how did it get distorted? Listen in and let us know what you think!

We've heard the phrase dozens, maybe hundreds, of times - "it is finished" or "the finished work of Christ." Jesus said it on the cross. We are encouraged to rest in this finished work. What was finished, though? Was Jesus saying His mission on earth was finished? Was His plan to make a way for us to Heaven finished? Did He finish His teaching? Yes! But those were only part of it! There is so much more to "it is finished" than we may realize - and we found lots of it!

Pandemics, social and political unrest, division, you name it - we lived through it in 2020!  It was easy to see the chaos, but maybe not so easy to see how Father was working in the middle of it all.  We took some time to ask Him to show us where He was for each of us in this last year.

Meet one of our favorite people, Kandi Taylor!  People use the word "testimony" lightly and easily sometimes, but that is not the case with this young woman.  She speaks with transparency and honesty about her life struggles, including being a military wife, her husband's long time addictions, and her own bout with cancer.  But Kandi's story is one of strength, grace, love, and overcoming - that is her testimony!

The "Dones" - those that have left the organized, institutional church, but not their faith and relationship with God.  We tackled this subject in a recent podcast, but the more we thought about it, the more we realized there was more to be said.  In this episode we share our personal experiences, stories from friends, and explore how we can help each other create a different community. We also talk about how we can connect with churches to help them better understand and adapt to the changing needs of believers.

It is not news to most of us that Christians have been leaving the organized church in large numbers.  They are not, however, leaving their faith behind.  They have been called the "Dones."  Why are they leaving and what are they looking for?  What is God doing?  Are you a "Done?" Join the conversation as we begin to explore this difficult subject.
