When our portfolio is in the green, we often credit our skill and knowledge for the success.
BUT, when our portfolios aren’t looking too great, we often attribute the losses to “bad luck” or “the down market”
This is fundamentally because, as humans, we have inherent biases, that prevent us from seeing the absolute truth of why things happen.
Now, if you’re able to understand these biases, and truly analyze whether your recent performance has been through luck or skill, you will have a mindset edge over everybody else investing in the stock market.

On this podcast, we’ve referenced Warren Buffet several times.
And how can you not? He’s one of the greatest investors of all time, and there’s a ton to learn from his wisdom.
And as you probably already know, Warren Buffet’s major principles of investing come from the ideas of value investing and long term investing.
By long term investing, we essentially mean that you buy a particular stock that you really love, which could be because of a plethora of reasons, and then you hold it for a long period of time, in the hopes that it will continue to exponentially compound and grow.
It sounds pretty smart and it’s clearly worked for Warren Buffet and a ton of other famous investors.
But is there more to this story? Have we prematurely set this philosophy as the gold standard for investing without deeply analyzing if it’s always effective for everybody?

Advice of what stocks you should buy, advice of what investment philosophies you should follow, and just general advice about what you should do with your money.
And oftentimes we follow this advice. Because if it’s coming from an expert, who has a lot more experience than we do, and who has had a lot of success in the past, who are we to question it?
This is generally called “Copy-Cat” investing. Doing exactly as the experts tell us to do.

What if copying what an expert is doing without the full understanding of why they are doing it could cause you to make huge mistakes when market conditions inevitably change?

Investing in the stock market is difficult.
I think we all know that. There are so many companies to choose from and endless annual reports to read before making decisions about where we put our money.
And for most of us, choosing what equities to invest in aren’t our full time jobs, we have so many other things to do and focus on in our lives.
So to solve this problem, the financial world has created Index and Mutual Funds.

Index funds or Mutual funds?

There aren’t many companies that truly embody their founders the way Amazon does.
Jeff Bezos is Amazon. Amazon is Jeff Bezos.
But not entirely anymore. In July of 2021, Jeff Bezos stepped down as CEO.
Though he remains the company’s executive chairman, he no longer runs day to day operations.
Regardless of which, Amazon’s principles set in the early days of its existence by Jeff Bezos, still reign supreme at the company.
These principles are a big factor in the company growing it’s revenues to almost 400 billion in 2020.
And in this episode, we dive deep into Amazon’s core philosophies, that they shared in their first letter to shareholders, all the way back in 1997.

In the history of companies that have existed, I think it’s fair to say that there has never been a stock that has divided public opinion so intensely. You either hate Tesla, or absolutely love them. And this has led them to being both one of the most shorted stocks in history, and at the same time, has driven their stock price to over a trillion dollars. Yup, a trillion.
Some people say Tesla is the biggest organized scam that has ever existed, some say it’s the most innovative and important company on the planet. But regardless of whether you hate or love the company and it’s eccentric billionaire CEO, Elon Musk, you need a framework to assess whether they are over or undervalued.
For this episode, we summarized Aswath’s Damodaran’s 3 major views on what you need to keep in mind before investing in Tesla. Aswath is a professor at NYU and an extremely well renowned investor. And every year, he conducts a valuation of what he feels Tesla’s stock price should be, and could be in the future, based on their most recent earnings report. Here’s what he keeps in mind while valuing Tesla.
Btw, stay tuned right to end, where we share the actual price that Aswath values Tesla at, and whether he thinks it’s currently a good buying opportunity.

The funny, yet often anxiety causing thing about investing is that there is no one way to be successful.
The legendary investors that you might have heard of, Warren Buffet, George Soros and Peter Lynch, all took different paths to generating wealth.
And that’s where it gets confusing for us as investors. Who do we listen to?
Well, it turns out, the answer to that question lies in two places. First, you have to understand the different investment philosophies you can adopt, and second, you must understand which philosophy best suits your personality.
So in this episode, you’re going to get answers to both of those points.
We spoke to Divam Sharma, who’s the co-founder of Green Portfolio, to walk us through the most widely adopted philosophies. Value Investing, Dividend Investing and Growth Investing. He also walks us through which personality types should adopt each strategy.

Startup disruptors often have similar characteristics.
They have a grand vision for what the world should look like. Energetic Founders who are willing to take big risks. And piles of venture backed funding to make a dent in the market.
Traditional, public companies tend to have one defining characteristic that they all share. A deep focus on profitability. If they aren’t profitable their stock price will drop. This focus, while it keeps the business moving, tends to lead to a risk averse culture. Which then in turn, leaves them open to disruption.
This pattern is extremely evident in the FinTech world. Players like Paytm, Policybazaar and Mobikwik have come in and digitized the finance world, and the traditional players are having trouble keeping up.
Oh and those startups I mentioned, are leaving the venture backed financing world, and going public.
In this extremely exciting episode, we spoke to Sonam Srivastava, who’s the founder of Wright Research, about the prospects of Paytm, Policybazaar and Mobikwik as they enter the public markets, and whether or not, you should be looking at them as an investment.

When you are investing in public markets, the fundamental question you have to ask yourself is "is this stock over or undervalued?"

Annual statements, trend graphs, PE Ratio's and more.
The information overload causes overwhelm and indecision.
But legendary investor, Aswath Damodaran, thinks differently.
As a professor at NYU, he teaches his students how to simplify valuation. He says anybody can do it and Financial consultants can just make it look difficult
He has 4 simple rules to simplify the seemingly complex process of Valuation.
What are they? Listen the podcast to find out!
