A beauty podcast from mindbodygreen, the leading brand in health and well-being. Through this series, we’ll dive into the science and soul of beauty’s most pressing topics.
“When we age our whole body ages. What happens is our cells just get tired and stop working as well as they used to. The hair follicle is no different,” says board-certified dermatologist Neera Nathan, M.D. “It’s a collection of cells, and after a while they start to deplete. Eventually our hair follicles just aren’t as able to grow hair as well, just as our skin isn’t quite as able to regenerate collagen the way it did when it was younger.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Nathan about how nutrition affects hair health, how to reverse graying, common causes of thinning, and more.

It makes you feel like you can’t achieve something,” says celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles, founder of the shopping destination Reed Clarke. “I’m a bit punk rock in the fact that that sort of stuff drives me nuts. I don’t think it’s fair for women to have that extra burden of not only needing thousands of dollars worth of products, but needing to feel like they need to wear 20 products at a time.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Stiles about how she helps her clients (who include Gabrielle Union and Lily Collins) look their most authentic, mastering a red lip, and how to adjust your makeup style as you age.

“Skin care isn’t an exact science. We can get into the nitty gritty details of ingredients all we want, but that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know how to use it in your own routine. That’s why I think it’s so important to learn how to implement, improve and troubleshoot your own skin care routine for your skin type,” says cosmetic chemist Victoria Fu, who co-founded Cosmetic Confessions alongside Gloria Lu. And Lu agrees: “It’s empowering for someone to be comfortable enough with their skin that you know what it needs everyday.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mbg beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Lu and Fu about industry pet peeves, why formulations are never black and white, and why we should stop focusing on ingredient percentages so much.

“It’s positioned as empowering for the consumer to ‘do their research’ on ingredient lists, but I actually think it ends up being disempowering. You need an advanced degree in chemistry to keep up with the ingredients, formulas, and latest research. How can we expect the average consumer to do that?” says Jaleh Bisharat, founder of beauty e-retailer NakedPoppy. “And unfortunately there’s just not as much independent research as we need. There’s a lot of data holes.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Bisharat about how machine learning can improve the beauty shopping experience, why the consumer shouldn't need to be “armchair chemists” to shop smarter, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than you found it. “I really do believe in the foundations of beauty, which are skin, teeth, brows, and hair. If you care and focus on those foundations, if you embrace the things that are working for you, then you can build out from there in any direction you want. “My background is in biotech, where we share all our data, equipment, and results. And when I tried to get the same info from beauty companies, I was met with silence,” says Barb Paldus, Ph.D., founder of Codex Labs. “It’s common in other industries, too. If you go to buy a microwave, it will tell you the wattage. If you buy a box of cereal, it will have a nutrition panel. The beauty industry doesn't operate like that, and I think that’s a problem.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director Alexandra Engler chats with Paldus about how she moved from biotech into the beauty industry, the changes she wants to see in the space, why we must consider the skin microbiome health when using beauty products, and how to optimize skin health through diet. “If you use natural and organic ingredients in your skincare, or even in your diet, you will in the long run, look better, healthier, and more beautiful than those who go for the quick fixes. Quick fixes and aggressive treatments may look good for a night, a week, or even a month or two. But If overused, they can damage the skin. And as the months and years go by, the skin can actually look worn and unhealthy.
