Fort Worth Freedom Review: Recent Episodes

This show is brought to you by the Justice Reform League, a Fort Worth based non-profit focusing on educating and empowering Texans to become politically active and advocate for yourselves and your communities. The Fort Worth Freedom Review exists to serve that goal and the residents of the State of Texas. We will spend much of our time focusing on issues and policy that relates to Fort Worth and Tarrant County. While it is true that many of the problems that exist in our communities can solely be addressed and solved at the municipal level, there are also a number of issues that can only be resolved at the State level. Therefore, we will also discuss issues and policy regarding the State of Texas. Navigating the layers of our bureaucracy is difficult, and it is meant to be. If you don’t know who your city council representative is, what district you are in, who your State Representative or State Senator is or how they are supposed to function in the system--then it is very easy for those who wish to use the power of the office for personal benefit to continue doing so. If democracy is to function properly, you need an educated populace. You need information. You need the truth. We are here to bring it all together so when you go into the voting booth on any election day you are prepared with the knowledge of how to vote best for your community. Dr. Cornel West says “voting is a tool, not a mode of self-expression." We are here to show you how to use that tool most effectively.

Hello Fort Worth and welcome to another episode of the Fort Worth Freedom Review.
If you are new here, the Freedom Review exists to inform and educate the Fort Worth and Tarrant County community about the values and the functions of civic engagement, the goings-on of the local City Council, the Mayor, the County Commissioners Court as well as important news stories from our community and from the greater Texas community including state political issues.
My name is Anthony Sosa and today we have Amber O’Dell, Thomas Moore and Christie Beamer here to discuss local issues regarding the FWPD. This episode ran a little long so we had to break it up into 2 parts. This is Part 2 of 2 and in Part 1 Amber covered the Bowman and Del Carmen Expert Police Panel Report. This report was pretty thorough and dense and details many issues with the current state of the dept and lays a great foundation for the conversations to come here in part 2.
In this part, part 2, Christie breaks down the Sunset Commission for us, it’s role and its report on FWPD and “opportunities for growth.” Thomas will discuss some of the findings from No Sleep Till Justice’s FOIA request regarding FWPD incidents and finally I will present some recent news stories regarding FWPD and Keller PD.

My name is Anthony Sosa and I am here today with Amber O’Dell and Michael Cambpell to discuss the Governor’s legislative proposal and press conference regarding “defunding the police” --hosted here in Fort Worth at the Bob Boland facility on the South Side of town. In this announcement the Governor and his compatriots fear mongered lawlessness and chaos in our streets if the police were defunded. He shamed the city of Austin for the decisions of their elected officials and is proposing legislation to be taken up in the next session that will punish any city that “defunds the police” by freezing their property taxes at the current level.

Hello Fort Worth. You are listening to the Fort Worth Freedom Review. This show is under the auspices of the Justice Reform League, a Fort Worth based non-profit focusing on educating and empowering Texans to become politically active and advocate for yourselves and your communities. The Fort Worth Freedom Review exists to serve that goal and the residents of the State of Texas. We will spend much of our time focusing on issues and policy that relates to Fort Worth and Tarrant County. While it is true that many of the problems that exist in our communities can solely be addressed and solved at the municipal level, there are also a number of issues that can only be resolved at the State level. Therefore, we will also discuss issues and policy regarding the State of Texas. Navigating the layers of our bureaucracy is difficult, and it is meant to be. If you don’t know who your city council representative is, what district you are in, who your State Representative or State Senator is or how they are supposed to function in the system--then it is very easy for those who wish to use the power of the office for personal benefit to continue doing so. If democracy is to function properly, you need an educated populace. You need information. You need the truth. We are here to bring it all together so when you go into the voting booth on any election day you are prepared with the knowledge of how to vote best for your community. Dr. Cornel West says “Voting is a tool, not a mode of self-expression, “ we are here to show you how to use that tool most effectively.
