In this episode, Courtney talks with Jennifer Reynolds, mother of 12 kids and lifelong hiker. They talk about hiking as kids and with kids all over the country, what kind of snacks can keep them all moving and they answer the question: “What have you learned from hiking with your kids?”

More about Jennifer:

I have always had a love for nature, ever since as far back as I can remember.

I started “hiking” and adventuring in grade school, in the large expanse of woods, creeks, and farmlands behind my grandparents home .
I would spend hours finding all sorts of animals and plants. I loved climbing on everything and playing in the water.

My first two children were born in the 90s and I did my best to instill in them a love of nature and a respect for the Earth. When they were little we lived with a 761 acre park right in our backyard. We would spend all day in the forest and hiking out and back in the creek at the bottom of the gorge there. On the weekends we would hike at other local parks or travel to the Natural Bridge State Resort Park in KY.

We are now a combined family with 12 kids. In the last 28 years I have traveled to 2 countries and all but 8 states. We can’t wait to explore more and revisit some. I have frequently been hiking with a child on my front and/or back. I enjoy hiking with my family and the Tri-State Hiking and Events Group, caving with the Louisville Grotto, and have many other hobbies and diy interests.

In this episode, Courtney talks with Nick Buchanan, one of the founders of the Tri-State Events Hiking Group in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. They talk about why Nick chose hiking as a way to improve his physical health, the surprising hiking challenges that can be found in the tri state area, how “outdoor people” tend to be so friendly and Nick answers the question - “How did you find hiking buddies?”

More about Nick:

“I am a divorced father of one son that loves to spend time with his son. I am a mechanical engineer by trade but explorer by hobby.

I hiked as a kid with my grandparents but as life got busy busy I lost this hobby. Late 2019 I was the most out of shape ever at 245 lbs. I found myself with high blood pressure and I decided I needed to make some changes to my life if I wanted to live a long healthy life.

Around Christmas time 2019 I started hiking. I hiked mostly by myself early 2020 but I did find a few friends to hike with time to time. When Covid hit I was sent to work at home. I really started walking, hiking, and working out daily. It kind of became an obsession and I at one time was averaging 25k steps a day. I also got myself down to 190 lbs.

One thing i decided was I would like others to hike with when my friends were not available. I tried some hiking groups on Facebook and it didn’t seem I could get anyone together the first couple times.

Then I finally found a group of 4 to hike with for Fathers Day 2019. This led to a couple hikes and to a Facebook messenger chat where we could plan future hikes. This chat was getting crazy and it was mentioned why don’t you make it a group. I had no idea what that entailed so Holly now my fellow admin help put it together. Within a few days we grew to a few hundred members

This was the beginning of an amazing adventure. I have had a chance to explore many amazing places and met so many great people that are like my family now. This has also led to me meeting to the most amazing person to share my life with. This has led me and my girlfriend to many great adventures together too. The outdoor world is amazing and I have been so pleasantly surprised the amazing people I have met there in the last 3 years. I am feel so lucky to have an amazing group to hike and enjoy the outdoor world with now. We have now grown to over 20k members.”

In this episode, Courtney talks with friend of the show, Christine “Lady Unicorn” Reed. They talk about learning to truly hear your body’s needs while hiking (or doing anything), how a diagnosis of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) has changed her perspective, how we can still engage with and enjoy nature while we are “pushing” and they answer the question: “Why are you going from “plodder” to FKT? (Fastest Known Time)”

More about Christine:

Christine Reed is a long-distance backpacker and author of the memoir, Alone in Wonderland. She shares her personal journey from sedentary office worker to rugged outdoorswoman in hopes of inspiring others to see something bigger for themselves-- whatever that may be. But also to remind us that a good story is about sharing something real and unfiltered of ourselves and connecting with others. She's found in the outdoor community the first place that ever felt like home.

In this episode, Courtney talks with Brittany “Puddin” McDonald. They talk about finding yourself in Nature, the amazing support in the hiking community, the hiking addiction and they answer the question: Why did you hike over 4000 miles?

About Puddin:

I started hiking the Appalachian Trail for self healing purposes after only completing one backpacking trip. When I reached Katahdin I continued on to the Canadian border. I then traveled to Alabama where I completed the Pinhoti Trail and connected my footsteps to Springer Mountain using the Benton Mckaye Trail. I then went back to the southern terminus of the Pinhoti and started walking south through the Alabama Roadwalk straight into the Florida Trail to Key west florida. Ending my first thru hike of 4400 miles.

In this episode, Courtney talks with Maren “Wizard” Wahle. They talk about the challenges of hiking in the sun, whether social media documentation is a great idea and they answer the question: What is it like to hike internationally?

About Maren:

My name is Maren, I'm 28 years old, and I was born and raised in Germany. My parents emigrated to Michigan about 9 years ago; I made the move to join them full-time in February 2021, after finishing my Bachelor's degree in English and German philology at the University of Stuttgart. Since I didn't quite know what to do with myself yet when I got here, I figured it would be an excellent time to go live in the woods for a while. So, in April 2021, I headed down to Georgia to start my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I summited Mount Katahdin on October 2nd - and knew immediately that I wanted to get back out there. I took a break from long distance trails in 2022 for several reasons, but in February 2023 I got the chance to join some friends from the AT on the Florida Trail - what was supposed to be a little 2 week section hike turned into a 740-mile-5-week adventure. Now I'm back in Michigan and making final preparations to head out for my PCT thru-hike attempt in a few weeks! (And then I guess back to Florida next January to finish up the Florida Trail...?)

In this episode, Courtney talks with Lee “Boots” Fortune. They discuss the efforts Lee is making to help spread the message that the outdoors is for everyone, his controversial snack choice and they answer the question - What is Hike for Healing?

About Lee:

“My name is Lee but on the trail, on YouTube, socials, and even at work I am known as Boots (a name I came by honest). I have also been called a LAD (as opposed to LASH) as I routinely hike longer dayhikes (20+ miles). Last year along with my often times hiking partner, Steps, held our first Hike for Healing event in which we successfully completed the Tour de LeConte hiking over 45 miles in less than 24 hours. Through ongoing conversation, lots more interest, and vastly increased participation, we are having a Hike for Healing 2023 in which we will attempt to complete segment 1 of the Mountains to Sea Trail in less than 24 hours. I love my family, I love the outdoors, creating Youtube content, and I love hiking and exploring. I am also a musician of many years (what I actually went to school for), and, as a personal non hiking hobby enjoy making and playing cigar box guitars. :)”

About Chris:

Chris was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and grew up in Central Florida. He is a graduate of Davidson College and the Vanderbilt University School of Law. Chris enjoyed a long and successful legal career in Memphis, Tennessee, first as an assistant district attorney and then doing personal injury defense litigation as staff counsel for two insurance companies. Recently Chris made the decision to take a break from the practice of law and pursue opportunities in outdoor stewardship, a long-held passion. In 2022 Chris served as a backcountry caretaker for the Appalachian Mountain Company in the White National Forest, and was responsible for one of the busiest campsites along the Appalachian Trail. Chris has earned certifications in wilderness first aid and as a Leave No Trace Trainer, and recently became a member of the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club. Chris is thrilled to be serving as the long season Ridgerunner in GSMNP.

This is a very special bonus leftovers episode! We often keep talking after the "official interview" is done for the show, so this time Courtney talks to John "No Worries" and Missy "Hot Buns" Baatz, Keith "Fozzie" Foskett and Stephanie "Georgie" Quarles. These are pretty random! We talk about the danger of random falling animals in the tropics, our pre-historic connection to living outside and trails, and finally, the way in which our stories can help inspire others.

In this episode, Courtney talks with Patrick "Dosu Kinuta" French, a hiker with over 20,000 miles under his boots. They talk about the variety of trails to be found here in the United States and abroad, how he came to "walk the earth" for so many miles and they answer the question: "Why do you answer the SAME hiking questions over and over again?"

As a New Hampshire native Patrick has taken the State's motto of "Live Free or Die" to heart, abandoning material posessions to live life out of a backpack. Most of his life he felt out of place in a society that measured how successful you were by the things you owned. He found his true home and calling within a community of nomads called Thru-Hikers who welcomed him and filled his heart with love. He consistently pushes his limits and what is thought possible for the human body and mind to endure while helping with innovations by putting gear to the test in the worst of conditions for the betterment of the community.

In this episode, Courtney talks with Steve "Mighty Blue" Adams, the host of "Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail - The Ultimate Mid-Life Crises". They discuss the amazing trail community, what it's like to settle in and feel at home in the woods and they answer the question: "Why would you hike the entire Appalachian Trail, twice?!"

Steve's Bio: "I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2014, at the age of 62, as a complete hiking novice. Vowing never to hike again, I wrote a couple of books about my journey, and started podcasting, initially as a method of publicizing my books. Yet the podcast grew far beyond my books and kept me engaged with the hiking community. Since then, I have attempted (and failed) three times on the John Muir Trail, completed the Camino de Santiago (Les Francés), the West Highland Way in Scotland, and a second Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Then, in August / September 2022, I was able to successfully complete the TSX Challenge in California, when I summited Mt Whitney, to erase the memories of my unsuccessful JMT attempts.
Going forward into my 70s, I have little doubt that new adventures will tempt me once more. I'm still up for a challenge!"

He currently owns 11 hammocks from different cottage vendors, and loves each one of them. In this episode, Courtney talks with Joseph "Whiskey Joe" Ryan. Joseph completed his Appalachian Trail thru hike in 2021 with his best friend, Travis/Roosta. They talk about what life is like before and after a thru hike, Joey's signature "Whiskey Joe" drink and answer the question: "Is it hard to hike with your best friend?"

About Joey Ryan:
He started backpacking at age 11 through his boy scout troop and received inspiration from his uncle to thru hike the AT. He went on his first AT section hike at age 15 and realized that the trail life is where true freedom lies. Since then, a lot has changed, but his love for the outdoors has not. On May 9th 2021, Joey and his lifelong friend Travis/Roosta set out to thru hike the AT. He had taught Travis most of his outdoor skills and shared his dream of being a thru hiker. They stuck together for the entire trail and completed the goal they had originally set, together.

In this episode, Courtney gets unfiltered with Keith "Fozzie" Foskett, author and worldwide hiker. They discuss long trails all over the world and particularly in the UK, living a wanderlust lifestyle, and they ask the question: "How can we rebel against the status quo?"

Someone once described Keith Foskett as an anomaly (it was apparently a compliment). He has hiked thousands of miles and holds a deep respect for the outdoor spaces of this world. Well known in hiking circles, he has written several books and contributes to various outdoor publications.

He’s partial to a glass of Rioja and nurtures a weird interest in down sleeping bags and wool underwear. Encouraging people to chase adventures and live their dreams, he was born and still lives in southeast England.

In this episode, Courtney has a conversation with Anna "Mud Butt" Huthmaker about the hiking community that she created, Trail Dames. They explore the concept of how we can, and do, support each other on the trail so that we can experience the growth that exploring the outdoors has to offer. Anna and Courtney ask the question: "Does it take a village to hike a trail?"

In 2003, Anna Huthmaker hiked 700 miles on the Appalachian Trail and realized that nobody on the trail looked like her. She returned home and formed the Trail Dames. She wanted a group for “women of a curvy nature.”

ALL women are now welcome in the Trail Dames and Anna’s podcast reflects the supportive nature of women who hike. If you’d like to know more about the Trail Dames organization, click on the link below, but NOT before you listen to Anna!!

The Trail Dames mission is to welcome, empower, and educate women of all shapes, sizes, and experience and fitness levels to responsibly explore nature. TD accomplishes this by offering safe and supportive activities that promote personal growth, friendship, self-confidence, self-reliance, and a love of the outdoors. In this episode, Courtney chats with Andrew Forestell, aka Reptar. Andrew shares some of his craziest adventures and together they answer the question: How is being miserable fun?!

Andrew "Reptar" Forestell is an entrepreneur, photographer, and explorer on a journey to pursue sheer adventure and keep nature clean. After completing a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2015, Reptar realized he can do more than just share his journey; he can inspire a movement. Reptar self-released The AT Experience, which soared through community theaters and inspired many to take chances and live their lives to the fullest.

Subsequently, Reptar set out to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2017 and joined forces with the Granite Gear Groundskeepers to help clean up trash on long trails across the United States. After hiking more than four-thousand miles, Reptar stays determined to keep his head high and his eyes forward.

In 2020, he was featured on Discovery Channel's TV show "Naked and Afraid", and since then his heart and mind are the true lens of his camera. Reptar is currently immersed in creating a second film, The PCT Experience, as well as creating a survival game called Far North.

In this episode, Courtney has an unfiltered conversation with Jon and Missy Baatz that was so much fun it had to be broken into two episodes! In Part 2 the Baatz dive into life on a long trail with a spouse/significant other, how Missy surprised herself, and how the "drug" of happiness can get us hooked. They answer the question: How much is enough?!

Jon and Missy Baatz are a married couple whose hike on the Appalachian Trail in 2019 forever changed their lives. They left corporate life behind, sold almost everything they owned, and built a camper van to live in full time. Now they travel full-time, working just enough to fuel their passions.

In this episode, Courtney talks with Gary "Green Giant" Sizer, author and Appalachian Trail thru hiker (2014). Gary turned his lifelong love of story-telling into a best-selling book, Where's the Next Shelter? They explore how the trail changes you physically and mentally, what life looks like after a long hike and how hiking can grow from a hobby to an obsession.

Gary Sizer was born in New Castle, Pa. Years of military service and software consulting fed his passion for travel, which he chronicles in his latest book, Home is Forward. After walking the Appalachian Trail in 2014, his before and after pictures went viral, and since then millions of people have seen him in his underpants. Now Gary hikes and lives in the hills near Asheville, N.C., where he occasionally records stories for NPR's The Moth.

This episode I get to talk to Halo, a mother of four, a hiker, and a true trail angel! Halo shares with us some of the great strategies she and her husband, Disciple, have used for memorable hikes with their kids in tow.

She also gets real with me about how she manages to get in her own "me time" on solo local hikes. By the way, Halo also provided support for her husband, Disciple, who thru hiked the AT in 2017 and is legally blind. Wow! You can see both of their YouTube channels in the notes below.
