Discover the enlightening journey of Megan Tschanz, the author of 'Women Rising: Learning to Listen, Reclaiming Our Voice'. Megan takes us from her conservative evangelical upbringing to her eye-opening World Race mission trip experiences, which exposed the harsh reality of global oppression of women. Get ready to hear stories of patriarchal standards in Kenya and the sexual exploitation of women in the Philippines, and learn how Megan found herself questioning the gender norms taught in her church community.

Our discussion moves from Megan's personal experiences to a broader exploration of biblical womanhood, gender roles, and liberation within biblical narratives. Together, we dissect the intersections of feminism and Christianity and consider how our understanding of scripture can impact our views on gender equality. Tune in as we scrutinize the damaging effects of purity culture within the evangelical church and discuss the complexities of biblical sexual ethics in the modern world.

A company that’s created a ripple in the nutrition industry, Serenity Kids is recognized for its nutrient-packed baby food, toddler food, snacks, and toddler formula. As a doting parent himself, Joe, along with his wife, Serenity, embarked on this journey to fill the void in the market and provide balanced, non-sugary food options for children. He brings forth his strategies for creating diverse flavor profiles and shares a little secret on enticing picky eaters to experiment more. The conversation radiates a palpable sense of how much thought and effort goes into making every serving a nourishing feast for the little ones.

As we walk through the creation of a family farmer-centric supply chain, Joe highlights the importance of regenerative agriculture. We touch upon how it can be instrumental in reversing climate change, supporting family farms, and most importantly, ensuring the health of our future generation. This episode is a treasure trove of insights and advice on feeding children, fostering healthy eating habits, and raising a nutritionally aware generation. So, tune in and let's redefine child nutrition together!

What if you could read a children's book that resonates with adults and children alike, helping to navigate mental health struggles? This week, I was fortunate to sit down with Jenna Winship, a dear friend and author of such transformative children's books. Jenna's literature, deeply influenced by her own health and mental health journeys, offers a unique opportunity for parents and children to confront and replace negative self-talk with the truth. We delved into her beautiful books, including the enchanting tales of Million the Warm Wind, Clayton's Wings, and Penelope's Wildflowers.

Have you ever considered the critical role that trauma plays in our lives and how it manifests physically? Jenna and I explored this profound concept, discussing how threats can trigger trauma and the potential for healing through returning to a place of rest. We also shared some practical techniques, like blowing lies away in a balloon or practicing fish-breaths, that can assist in this process. In our conversation, the power of mantras emerged as a significant theme, highlighting how acknowledging pain, letting it go, and replacing it with positivity can create fresh neural pathways.

In a special segment, Jenna shared her writing journey and the inspiration behind her books. From the story of Million the Warm Wind, the COVID-helpful Clayton's Wings, to Penelope's Wildflowers, a tale born from Jenna's personal experience with fear and anxiety during pregnancy after a miscarriage. We emphasized the importance of embracing the present, letting go of the future worries that do not serve us, and a valuable lesson Jenna learned from her mother-in-law, 'grace for the place.' This enlightening conversation is a must-listen for parents and children navigating the complexities of mental health.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The emotional impact of children's books
  • Releasing emotions through playful techniques
  • The power of asking questions
  • Reevaluating the concept of being prepared
  • Embrace the present, let go
  • Impactful mindset shift and book recommendations

In this episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with Hilda Labrada Gore. She is the host and producer of the Wise Traditions podcast and the founder of Holistic Hilda. Hilda is not only a seasoned podcaster but also a certified health coach and an experiential anthropologist.

Hilda's passion for exploring ancient health traditions has taken her on a journey akin to that of Dora the Explorer 2.0. Her ultimate goal is to uncover ways to restore energy and vitality to humanity.

One of the beautiful stories Hilda is sharing with us today includes that of a midwife and healer from Ecuador whom she had encountered and imparted a profound lesson – that the human body is sacred. Struck by this message, Hilda thought about how she could share this with others and inspire them to treat themselves with greater care and respect. If more people understood that they were perfect and beautiful in their own right, perhaps they would nourish themselves differently. When we treat our bodies with reverence and care, we can experience greater health, happiness, and fulfillment in all areas of our lives.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Looking to the past for good health today
  • The story of the man with the walking stick
  • Making the shift back to real foods
  • The power of the body to heal itself
  • The healing cycle between humans and the land
  • The importance of looking to the past for good health
  • Planning your travel and making connections

It's a disturbing thought - the billions of microplastics that pollute our oceans can seep into the fish that inhabit them. And when we consume these fish, we are inadvertently also ingesting these harmful microplastics. It's a vicious cycle that has serious implications for both our health and the environment.

As the world continues to grapple with the issue of plastic waste and its impact on the environment, it's important to note that our own health is also at risk. Recent studies have shown that humans consume as much as a credit card's worth of plastic every week, highlighting the need for us to take action to minimize our plastic usage.

In this episode, we will delve into the various ways in which plastic affects our lives and explore actionable steps we can take to reduce our plastic consumption. I'm also sharing some tips for how to get plastic out of your home.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How we get plastic in our bodies
  • Microplastics and the gut microbiome
  • Why plastic is bad for the gut
  • How to avoid plastics and tips for shopping in stores
  • How to create a zero-waste kit on the go
  • How to get rid of plastic in your home

The average margin for farmers and ranchers in the country is only one and a half percent, making it challenging to create a sustainable system. However, connecting with our food and having an understanding of the whole lifecycle of an animal can help us achieve food stability.

In a conversation with Kate Kavanaugh, the owner of Ground Work Collective, we learn about her passion for animals and the land, which led her to open Western Daughters Butcher Shoppe in 2013. Three years ago, she and her husband bought a farm in upstate New York where they practice regenerative agriculture. Kate is also a nutrition therapist and the host of the Mind, Body, and Soil Podcast.

Kate believes that promoting both environmental and financial sustainability for farmers and ranchers is crucial. She and her team created the Ground Work Collective, which connects consumers with farmers and ranchers who use holistic land management practices. With over 2,000 farmers and ranchers on the site, Ground Work Collective ensures that each farmer meets their standards to the best of their ability. By sharing stories of farmers and ranchers with their customers and their meat's impact on customers, Ground Work creates a space where urban and rural environments can connect.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The decision to eat meat in her 20s
  • Supporting regenerative agriculture in the front range
  • The local aspect of meat through Ground Work
  • The importance of connecting with our food
  • What is a soil food web?
  • What it means to nourish our soil
  • How we can scale regenerative farming
  • Isolation vs. systems thinking

You might have heard the saying, "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey." But how often do we actually live by those words? We often focus so much on where we're trying to go that we forget to enjoy the ride. We hold ourselves back from being happy because we don't feel like we deserve it or we're not doing enough.

Today, Cassidy Ceresa from Cassidy Eats is here to remind us that we are worthy of happiness. She shares some tips on how to simplify well-balanced living without making major sacrifices. As a behavior change coach, content creator, podcast host, and head of parties at Partytrick, Cassidy is all about empowering people to make positive changes.

Cassidy believes that there is a world in which you can have a healthy, balanced lifestyle, where you don’t have to sacrifice a single thing and not restrict yourself in any way. Simplifying well-balanced living is never going to be "either-or" – it's always going to be both. Living a balanced, healthy lifestyle is not so much about being on track or off track. It's about making the commitment to understand yourself and serve yourself in an authentic way.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Balancing work and personal health and wellness
  • Self-worth and self-love are important factors in weight loss
  • Why tracking points do not work
  • Overcoming the fear of diet culture and diet thinking
  • Trusting yourself to know how to eat
  • You’re in charge of your own experience!
  • The concept of famine vs. feast
  • Healthy swaps are one of the biggest keys to success
  • Navigating people around you and managing access to your friends

If you were to cut yourself, and you get a little scab, what you’ll find if you put it under a microscope would be full of platelets. As that scab starts to remold itself you will find the platelets on the underside that you can't see. They are breaking open and releasing these things called growth factors and cytokines from platelets to instigate that healing process.

Hence, through PRP injections, they’re harnessing that same power by pulling platelets out of your blood, in this instance a PRP, and causing that same kind of healing process in areas that don't usually have good blood flow.

In today’s episode, let’s have a talk with Chaz Fausel, MD, a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Specialist about the different stem cell and PRP injections available in the market right now and how they can impact your health over time.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How stem cell therapy works
  • What causes conflict
  • Kinds of injuries they treat
  • Types of shortcomings that
  • The Future of Insurance for stem cell treatment
  • Chiropractors using inferior products and blind injections

If you’ve never heard of mistletoe therapy, well, you are not alone. Though it’s not a widely known therapy in the United States, this has been used in Europe for over 100 years, to not only kill cancer cells, but to also help cancer patients deal with some of the adverse effects of both cancer and cancer treatment.

In this episode, I’m joined by Ivelisse Page, executive director and co-founder of the nonprofit organization Believe Big, which helps cancer patients face, fight, and overcome cancer. Diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer at the young age of 37, Ivelisse has been busy doing so much with Believe Big, getting mistletoe therapy in the hands of anyone facing cancer. Currently, they offer grants to cancer patients to pursue and release the financial burden that thousands of families have to gain access to this care that's not typically covered by insurance. They're also working with Johns Hopkins to do a four-phase study on mistletoe therapy.

Whether cancer is a first-hand experience of yours or you know of other family members and friends who have to deal with cancer, hopefully, this episode will shed light on mistletoe therapy as an affordable and effective treatment.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Ivelisse’s story of cancer diagnosis
  • Getting individualized care instead of standardized care
  • How mistletoe therapy is used in the realm of integrative medicine
  • The effect of mistletoe therapy on the patients who are on it
  • The basics of mistletoe therapy: mechanism, dose, and cost
  • The future of mistletoe therapy in the U.S.

A lot of patients come to these GLP-1 medications thinking it’s a magic pill for losing weight. However, this may not be a lasting solution for you. Also, if you've never checked your blood sugar, it’s critical to check it first before even trying to decide if semaglutide is right for you.

In this episode, I’m going to answer some questions that came up on my Instagram reel where I talked about my personal semaglutide usage as well as the symptoms I've been experiencing. Today, we expound on the weight loss effects of semaglutide, how that works, and more!

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The mechanism of semaglutide
  • How it promotes insulin sensitivity
  • What happens when you haven’t healed your body before taking it
  • Blood sugar testing and blood sugar monitoring

You could be treating food sensitivities but if you’re too focused on just that, you may be barking at the wrong tree. It’s important that while you’re looking to heal your gut, it’s also important to make eating fun!

In this episode, we’re joined by Alison Marras of Food by Mars, as she talks about when and how to utilize healing diets like AIP and Paleo. Alison is a nutritional therapy practitioner who is passionate about supporting women dealing with food sensitivities, gut issues, and autoimmune stuff.

It’s important to have a healthy relationship with food. However, diet is just one component of our overall health. Sure, it’s extremely powerful. But if we keep overcorrecting with our diets, we're potentially getting way too much power to it that we fail to look at the other critical stuff (ex. movement, sleep, stress, etc.)

While food is medicine, all those things are medicine, too, so we need to pay attention to those as well. Listen in as Alison shares her wisdom and learn why you shouldn’t feel so crazy around food and gut healing that you forget the other components of health that are just as important.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The need for supporting the foundation of our health
  • What makes up an AIP diet
  • Addressing the root cause of your health issues
  • Advice for food allergies and food restrictions
  • Focusing on what you can eat versus what you cannot eat
  • Principles around healing your gut
  • Understanding the individual differences in sensitivities
  • The importance of a healthy relationship with food

People who have struggled with chronic illness can be so misunderstood, especially with Lyme disease that’s like a “silent” illness. In this conversation, I’m going to share the mic with Brooke Geahan of the Heal Hive where she talks about bee venom therapy in curing Lyme disease and other chronic infections.

Brooke contracted Lyme disease that had infiltrated her immune system and the use of antibiotics wasn't helpful at all. For three years, she tried to find a way through, and that included losing her job and her home. She basically went from being a fully independent woman who had a lot of dreams ahead of her to literally losing everything. Every protocol she tried just made her sicker and more bankrupt in every way – emotionally, financially, and spiritually.

After a nurse who dealt with the same disease helped her out, she was able to walk within a week. Brooke dove into the science of bee venom, specifically, the actual mechanics of it and its health benefits, which eventually led to the creation of Heal Hive.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Cultures where the bee venom therapy started and why it’s not as popular in the U.S.
  • How the bee venom works
  • Best practices to prepare your body for the bee venom
  • Why it’s imperative to understand what's going on in people's systems
  • Dealing with the trauma of chronic illness
  • Other health benefits of bee venom therapy

There's data suggesting that although 97% of women are taking a prenatal during pregnancy, 95% of them are nutrient-deficient. Food alone doesn't provide us with all of our nutritional needs anymore. How do we then bridge this gap to ensure that mamas are getting the nutrients they need at such a crucial stage in their lives as well as their babies?

In today’s episode, we’re joined by Ryan Woodbury, to talk about how to choose the optimal prenatal vitamins. Ryan is the co-founder of Needed, a science-backed, practitioner-supported, and mama-centric family nutrition brand. They're passionate about optimizing perinatal health and ultimately family health in order to support and help mamas thrive.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Examples of nutrient deficiencies in pregnancy
  • The connection between the mom’s gut and the baby’s gut
  • Nutritional gaps in prenatal vitamins
  • Focusing on optimizing the wellness of the baby vs. avoiding illnesses
  • Why methylated forms of folate are important

Hey guys! We're actually overdue for a new healing update since the last one I did was back in Episode 39. Before jumping to today's episode (or even after), it would be helpful for you to listen to Episode 43, where I had my health coach, Cynthia Mathes, talk about the Best Ways to Lose Weight Naturally. I am working with Cynthia on this targeted approach to both healing and weight loss.

We did a lot of healing work over the last four months on my gut and I’m going to share with you how we’re treating it. The gut is connected to pretty much everything else in the body and keeping it healthy is definitely crucial. One challenge currently at hand is that I'm supposed to be in this weight loss portion of the process, yet it has not worked. However, I'm still very much encouraged by the sheer amount of healing that I have experienced over the last four years.

Today, I’m going to talk about the last piece of my healing and wellness journey: blood sugar. My blood sugar is higher than it should be and apparently, high blood sugar can make weight loss close to impossible. Listen in as I explain how we’re approaching this. Hopefully, all the things that I'm learning are also going to help you learn more about your body, your health, and your wellness.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Findings from my GI map
  • How having a healthy gut is important for healing
  • How blood sugar works
  • How blood sugar affects metabolism
  • Tips for managing blood sugar
  • The benefits of a continuous glucose monitor (CGM)
  • How Semaglutide works

Would you rather just manage the symptoms of an illness or disease, or would you drill into its root causes so you can fix the underlying factors?

Joining me today is Dr. Soyona Rafatjah, a board-certified family medicine physician, and the co-founder and medical director of PrimeHealth Denver. PrimeHealth is a functional medicine practice that uses a whole-body approach and advanced diagnostic testing to provide exceptional and individualized care. Treating a variety of conditions, they also specialize in gut health, women's health, thyroid disorders, and mental health.

Where Western medicine struggles with – is where they thrive. But that’s not to discredit the role of Western medicine, which is also important. Therefore, a combination of both can be helpful. PrimeHealth is a great place to start if you're on a budget, but still, need a lot of help and support from a functional standpoint.

Soyona is passionate about integrative therapies – focusing on nutrition and wellness, meditation, yoga, massage, community support, etc. – things which she found to be a very important part of a person's healing, as opposed to how medications are causing all these crazy side effects.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How she got started in integrative medicine
  • What is integrative medicine
  • Most common root causes of stuffiness
  • Getting to the bottom of the root causes of your symptoms
  • Why gut health is a huge part of functional medicine

The next time you’re enjoying your morning coffee and your chocolate banana pancakes for breakfast, think about where those products you’re buying actually come from and who is farming them. The ugly truth is that those products could be the result of people exploiting children, women, or slaves who aren't even getting paid.

According to the World Bank, many smallholder farmers around the world are living on less than $2 a day. Sadly, the commodity prices are not set by the farmers themselves, but they're set on Wall Street. And so, there's a total disconnect between what the realities are on the ground.

Today’s conversation is very important because we’re going to discuss the impact of choosing Fairtrade with Kate Stritzinger, the director of Marketing and External Relations for Fairtrade America.

If you want to start prioritizing buying Fairtrade products, visit fairtradeamerica.org to see all of Fairtrade America-certified products there. Additionally, you can find products in your local market and grocery store by finding that Fairtrade America logo in blue and green with a person raising their hand up.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The working conditions for farmers outside of the fair trade program
  • The percentage of women in the farming industry and the challenges they face
  • Examples of goods or products with the worst working conditions
  • The benefits of Fairtrade to farmers
  • How Fairtrade is including producers in the process
  • How consumers can positively impact the farmers

Traumatic experiences are very powerful, and our body is even more powerful because it tries hard to protect us. Those protective mechanisms are so important because they help you survive at a time you may not have been able to survive what you went through. But at a certain point, those survival mechanisms may be hindering your growth and they're not helping anymore. It’s time to let go and move forward.

In this episode, Katie Levitre shares her struggles with anxiety, depression, and OCD and how psychedelics have played such a huge role in her healing journey. Katie also shares her intention of breaking that cycle of generational trauma so she can give her kids a life – not free of struggles, but a life free of the fear that has been passed down through many generations.

This is the first time that Katie has shared her entire story using mushrooms publicly. And it's truly an honor that she was willing to share her story on our podcast. Hopefully, you can keep an open, non-judgmental mind as we talk about using mushrooms in a therapeutic medicinal way.

Mushrooms have just been legalized in Colorado so this is definitely a changing landscape in terms of using mushrooms for wellness. If you need some deep internal healing and you’re considering this as a possibility, make sure you’re doing this in a state where it is legal. Finally, share this episode with a friend who may be struggling with mental illness and who you think would benefit from using mushrooms in a therapeutic way because this may be exactly what they need.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Her postpartum experience
  • What happens during lactose overload
  • Her transformative experience of using MDMA prescribed by her psychotherapist
  • A totally different experience using psilocybin
  • The difference between antidepressants and MDMA
  • Things to consider when you’re thinking of getting started with psychedelics

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I want to start off this show about gratitude with gratitude for YOU.

Holidays can be a super stressful time. I’m recording this before Thanksgiving, but if you listen to this podcast ON Thanksgiving itself, I will be hosting 10 family members for Thanksgiving.

First of all, what exactly IS gratitude? Even though we kind of instinctively KNOW what gratitude is, it can be hard to put into words. Is it an emotion? A feeling? A practice? A virtue? All of the above?

The definition of gratitude is “the state of being grateful : THANKFULNESS.” And thankfulness is defined as “the state of being conscious of benefit received.”

Psychologists Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California, Davis and Dr. Michael E. McCullough of the University of Miami define gratitude as a two-step process: 1) “recognizing that one has obtained a positive outcome” and 2) “recognizing that there is an external source for this positive outcome.”

Gratitude is an amazing practice because it helps us focus on the GOOD that is happening in our lives, whether that is big or small. It can also be a time to realize that the goodness is coming from a higher power, from God. It’s reassuring realizing that there is someone out there bigger than ourselves who is working for our good.

Where did gratitude come from?

According to a White Paper on Gratitude called “The Science of Gratitude” from the University of Berkley, some scientists suggest that gratitude may have evolved as a mechanism to drive reciprocal altruism, thereby turning strangers into friends and allies who are more likely to help one another.

What are the benefits of gratitude?

According to Harvard Medical School, Positive Psychology research shows that gratitude is consistently shown to be strongly related with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

I want to share a few studies on gratitude to further prove the overwhelming benefits of gratitude. In the first study called “Counting Blessings versus Burdens”, two psychologists, Dr. Robert A. Emmons and Dr. Michael E. McCullough they asked all participants to write a few sentences each week. One group wrote about things they were grateful for that had occurred during the week. A second group wrote about daily irritations or things that had displeased them, and the third wrote about events that had affected them (with no emphasis on them being positive or negative). After 10 weeks, those who wrote about gratitude were more optimistic and felt better about their lives. Surprisingly, they also exercised more and had fewer visits to physicians than those who focused on sources of aggravation.

Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, tested the impact of various positive psychology interventions on 411 people, each compared with a control assignment of writing about early memories.

“When their week’s assignment was to write and personally deliver a letter of gratitude to someone who had never been properly thanked for his or her kindness, participants immediately exhibited a huge increase in happiness scores. This impact was greater than that from any other intervention, with benefits lasting for a month.”

Research on how gratitude affects the heart is limited, but it suggests a correlation between positive psychological attributes, such as gratitude, with improved outcomes in cardiac patients.

The positive effects of gratitude can be physically seen on brain imaging. Areas of the brain associated with emotional regulation and mental calmness were more active when participants were instructed in a gratitude meditation.

Start Practicing Gratitude Today

If you’ve never started a gratitude practice, now is a great time! You can practice gratitude about past experiences, things that are currently happening in your life, and staying hopeful and grateful for the future.

Here are some ways to start practicing gratitude:

If today is Thanksgiving and you’re around your extended family, take this time to each share one thing you’re grateful for. This can be a special way to feel closer together as a family.
Get a separate journal or pad of paper that is dedicated exclusively to your gratitude practice. At the same time every day, maybe as you wake up each morning or before you go to bed, write down three things you’re grateful for. They can be super tiny or huge celebrations.

It’s culturally encouraged to give thanks before meals! Remember to either say a prayer of gratitude or if you’re not religious, you can practice a moment of gratitude to all the hands that went into growing and making your food. This moment can actually help you calm down and enter into a parasympathetic state, which also aids in digestion!

Practice the art of writing thank you notes! You might be accustomed to writing thank you notes for gifts, but you can expand that practice to kind notes that don’t need a reason. This has shown to benefit both the giver and receiver. If you’re not a letter writer, you could also say thank you with a phone call or text.

Write down your thankful thoughts on small pieces of paper, and put them in a jar. Then go back and read them when you’re feeling.

Practice gratitude around the dinner table. Have each person in your family share one thing they are grateful for that day!

We don’t often find women in leadership roles inside the church, and to see women in leadership is a breath of fresh air. When Megan Hermes started seeing the massive empowerment from Jesus for women, that's when Megan started wrestling with the idea of stepping into the light and becoming an evangelist.

Serving the ministry full-time for 20 years now, Megan Hermes is the Staff and Operations Pastor at Hope Valley Church in Denver. Along with her husband, she started the campus ministry which started at a campus university church.

You might disagree with the things we talk about in our discussion today, but what’s important is that we continue to learn and grow from these conversations. Because Jesus loves not just sinners, but even women as well.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The story of The Resurrection: the person whom Jesus called first to tell everyone that He has risen – is a woman
  • Other examples of passages in the Bible where women were leading the church
  • How Jesus is bringing the new kingdom
  • A verse in the Bible says women should be allowed to learn and have the capacity to teach.
  • The gift of influence among women and the issue of patriarchy
  • How to apply Jesus’ radical love today

There is a wealth of information available when it comes to pregnancy and preparing for birth, about the baby, and how to keep your baby alive. But postpartum care is such an underrated topic that we don’t really get a lot of information about it.

We prepare a lot more for birth than we do post-partum – a period when there are so many changes happening, not just physically, but also emotionally, in their relationships, their career, and their life as a whole. Yet we’re seeing so many gaps in the space of postpartum care and support. Once the baby is out, all attention goes to the baby and we forget there’s also healing that has to happen for the mom.

Today, we speak with holistic nutritionist Katie Braswell and Dr. Nichelle Gurule, a chiropractor, personal trainer, and a mom of three with her fourth on the way. Together, Katie and Nichelle created The Wild Mama Co, which offers a holistic approach to preparing for postpartum so moms can live happily and healthily in this vulnerable phase of their life.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What is the fourth trimester?
  • Why it’s so important to support moms as they transition to postpartum
  • The gaps that need to be addressed in postpartum support
  • The importance of rest
  • How their course is preparing women for postpartum
  • The lack of education about how to prepare for this transition

According to the National Institute of Health, 30.7% of adults are overweight, 42.4% of adults have obesity, and 9.2% have severe obesity. This means 82.3% of American adults are not metabolically healthy.

We’ve also been sold this lie over and over that in order to lose weight, all we have to do is eat less and exercise more. But it’s not just about diet or exercise. Long-term habit changes make all the difference. Your weight could also be a sign of something else deeper going on. And so, it’s basically a congruence of things.

In today’s episode, Cynthia Mathes, my personal health coach and weight loss coach, joins us to talk about the best ways to lose weight – naturally!

Cynthia offers a completely new and fresh perspective to this conversation. Aside from being a Master Primal Health Coach and Toxin and Detox Specialist, Cynthia holds several certifications in functional nutrition, weight loss, root cause illness, and functional labs, to name a few. As the founder of Cynthia Mathes Wellness, Cynthia helps overweight women with chronic symptoms begin healing so they can lose weight and keep it off for good.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The truth about crash diets and weight loss pills
  • The importance of root cause protocol in weight loss
  • The phases of weight loss and how they work together
  • Mindset makes up 90% of the journey.

In this episode, I’m sharing my second child’s birth story, my precious Owen’s birth story. Having a premature baby previously has put me into the high-risk category. I'm definitely glad to have birthed another child, but at the same time, it was another really scary experience. Overall, it was a much better experience, knowing the complications we had in the past with Ella and having this second complicated birth.

Back in Episode 10, I talked about how I had a premature baby, Ella, when I was 23 years old. It was a traumatic birth experience for me because we weren’t sure whether it was a stillbirth or she would get to live at just 5.8 ounces. Ella stayed for five weeks in the NICU. Ella is nine and a half years old now and she’s doing great.

During this pregnancy with Owen, I experienced preterm labor four times. Having had a baby with complications, there was absolutely no question in my mind that we were going to do it in a hospital. It's not to say that every single woman needs to have her baby in a hospital because you know what's best for you.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The sacrifice you have to make when you’re having kids young
  • Struggles with this pregnancy
  • The connection between short-statured women and premature labor
  • Birthing in a hospital vs. a birthing center/home
  • My labor journey and why it took six hours to get my epidural
  • Why Owen had to be vacuumed out of my body

I am all for loving your body, no matter your size or weight. Also, part of loving your body is to make sure you are in your best health and you’re feeling your best. And so, if you feel like something is off and maybe you want to get to the bottom of something, then you’ve got to get to the root cause of it. You never know what kind of healing your body needs to have and you might just save yourself from a very serious disease.

Today, we are going to talk about my health journey, bringing you back to my childhood all the way to where I am right now.

As a child, I struggled with my health, especially with my gut. Back in the day, it was just either you had peanut allergy or not – and that's it! There wasn't any elimination in the diet. There were no nuances that we have now today, which I am so thankful for.

That understanding just didn't exist when I was a child because there was a huge disconnect between what we ate and how we felt in our bodies. And so, part of my work today is to make that connection again, because that’s what has really changed my life and I am now able to feel my best.

Feeling so empowered by that, I want to share this message with other people struggling with health issues that healing is possible – and healing is for you!

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Feeling out of control with my health issues as a child
  • What sparked my desire to learn more about health and wellness
  • My first big step into movement
  • How my health declined from becoming vegetarian/vegan for three years
  • When and why I switched to a paleo diet
  • The importance of running full thyroid panels for pregnant women
  • How the keto diet messed up my metabolism
  • Healing my body with the help of Katie Braswell and Cynthia Mathes
  • Other health tests you should consider doing

Love bacon? But you don’t want to feed it to your kids because it’s processed, it’s got nitrite, and it’s unhealthy. Well, you and your kids can actually eat all the bacon you want. You just have to make sure you know where you’re getting it from.

Out of all the meat out there, it seems that pork has been the slowest to come around when it comes to ideal practices and humane stewardship. But Pederson’s Natural Farms has been doing this for a very long time. In fact, they’re the first to make no-sugar bacon available nationwide.

In today’s episode, Neil Dudley, vice president of Pederson's Natural Farms, joins us to talk about raising humane pork. He gives us a word picture of how they raise pigs at Pederson's Natural Farms. Additionally, we talk about organic – what that means for pigs and pork, and why it’s important to vote with your dollar.

At the end of the day, your nutrition is a key building block of your health and happiness. It affects every aspect of your life so it’s time we all reevaluate the food that we bring to the table.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The history of Pederson's Natural Farms
  • What makes Pederson’s products different from traditional processed meat
  • A tangible picture of humanely raised pigs
  • Maintaining the biosecurity of farrowing farms
  • Sourcing meat from other local farmers
  • Organic vs. non-organic products
  • Why you can’t totally eliminate nitrite from bacon

Did you know that only 2% of the people making clothing in the fashion world earn a living wage? That means 98% of the clothes we wear are made by someone that cannot make ends meet, and 75% of them are women. These are women working 60-70 hours a week, six days a week, just to live. How crazy is that?

We can all do our part in empowering women and ending poverty. In today’s episode, we welcome Barrett Ward, the CEO of ABLE Clothing, and Marissa Pardo, ABLE’s VP of brand marketing. In order to continually and increasingly empower women, they make beautiful, long-lasting, wonderful products that we all want to buy, regardless of their mission. But doesn’t it also feel great when you know there’s a purpose or story tied to your every purchase?

I’ve pretty much known Barry and Marissa since 2009 through Mocha Club, an international community committed to fighting extreme poverty in Africa. Aside from going down memory lane, we discuss how ABLE creates economic opportunities for women, which they believe is the key to ending generational poverty around the world.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The importance of understanding cost per wear
  • What you can do to prevent things from landing in a landfill
  • How they define “responsibility” at ABLE
  • Who makes ABLE products locally and abroad
  • How their manufacturing process works

How do you usually deal with pain or sickness? If you think medicine is the only way to heal, well it’s not. There are a lot of factors that contribute to one’s sickness. Maybe you have dairy issues, or soy issues. And while you might get rid of those foods that you're sensitive to, you could still be dealing with relationship issues or trauma, which could play a huge part as well. That is why having a holistic approach to treating any kind of pain or sickness is important in maintaining your overall well-being.

Joining today’s conversation is Amanda Love, a registered holistic nutritionist. Amanda teaches women how to cook simple but delicious, allergy-friendly, healthy meals, and she integrates a holistic approach through mind-body-spirit.

Born six weeks early, Amanda was growing up getting sick all the time – with sinus infections, sore throats, and whatnot. She looked completely normal but why would she be so sick for 10 days at a time? In 2010, Amanda was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a disorder that is characterized by “widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues.”

In this conversation, Amanda talks about her symptoms with fibromyalgia, some treatments that she has tried – what didn't work, and the things that work best for her to manage her pain and symptoms. Hopefully, at the end of this episode, you will learn one thing or two that you can prioritize in your life to help you feel better – because that's the goal!

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The possible correlation between immunity and being born premature
  • Amanda’s story of fibromyalgia and how bad her symptoms were
  • Factors that affect gut sensitivity
  • Things that didn’t work to alleviate her symptoms
  • Things that work for her: food, sleep, trauma healing
  • Ways to promote better sleep

Imagine a healthy ecosystem where there’s everything from your livestock, to the ground-nesting birds to the field mice, the snakes, the insects, and the life within the soil. With regenerative agriculture, it serves all those communities in a way that creates a net positive return. But what is regenerative agriculture and how does it positively impact our health and the environment?

In today’s episode, we welcome Taylor Collins, co-founder of Epic Provisions, the world’s first 100% grass-fed meat, fruit, and nut bar. About a year after Taylor, and his wife, sold Epic Provisions to General Mills in 2016, they purchased Roam Ranch, a 900-acre land in central Texas. There they continually raise their 100% grass-fed livestock – in an environment where animals have the ability to roam freely.

Taylor explains how they bought the land at its worst condition and used animal impact to restore and return it to its previous biological potential – a clear testament of Mother Nature's capacity for forgiveness, which is greater than our own species’ capacity for destruction.

Taylor and Katie are also active in helping grow regenerative supply chains at their new parent company Force of Nature. Today, we talk about regenerative agriculture and our hope for the future of this planet because of regenerative agriculture, and because of the work of people like Taylor and his wife, Katie.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The benefits of regenerative agriculture and what the system looks like
  • The time and work it took to build Roam Ranch
  • The connection between our own health and the health of the land
  • The consistent reuse of soil in regenerative agriculture practice
  • The principles of regenerative agriculture
  • Why there’s no such thing as plant-based regenerative systems
  • Why becoming vegan is the worst thing you can do if you really care about animals

Have you been curious, like me, about water filtration and its importance? I finally did the deep dive into all the research and am excited to share with you the best water filter in my humble opinion! We’ll even go into a cost analysis – and you may be surprised!

This post is sponsored by Berkey Water Filters, but all research, thoughts, and conclusions are my own! Thank you for allowing me to create content with the brands I love to continue to bring you content for free!

With the body being made up of 70% water, we all know how important it is to stay hydrated to keep our bodies healthy. Drinking water is a must for being healthy, but what if the water you are drinking is actually potentially harmful?

Most of us aren’t aware of what’s in our water. We simply trust that what shouldn’t be in the water won’t be. Why would anyone let the water be contaminated? The truth of the matter is that no matter where you’re getting water from – if it’s not filtered properly, you are most likely drinking contaminated water. Let’s take a look at what is potentially in our tap/bottled water and learn what we can do to make sure our water is safe.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • News stories about contaminated water
  • Possible contaminants that may be present in your water
  • What the U.S. is doing about the contaminants in tap water
  • Drinking water contaminants that are not monitored by the EPA
  • Threats to our drinking water
  • Effects of these contaminants in your water (even just a fraction of them!)
  • How to find what’s in your tap water
  • Facts about bottled water
  • The drinking water solution

A lot of white people are quite hesitant to start a conversation about white supremacy. Either they don’t know how to get started or they’re nervous about the backlash of being anti-racist from Black people or other races.

In this episode, Jill Nagle, the co-owner of Evolutionary Workplace, joins us to discuss how we can dismantle the white supremacy mythology. Jill makes this important point of how white supremacy only hijacks part of our humanity. It corrupts our willingness and ability to look at hard truths. Whiteness only exists socially, because there is no biological basis for the distinction among races. We all belong to one race – and that’s the human race!

This problem is rooted in history and we are still carrying it in our bodies until this day. But we end up arguing, polarizing, and canceling each other – instead of reckoning with history, and all the trauma, abuse, and pain – so we could all heal as one.

When I asked Jill about what a successful life looks like to her, she said that she finds success in acting with integrity, showing up for people she loves, and catalyzing transformation that helped the world evolve into a safer, more loving, understanding, and compassionate place.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What is white supremacy mythology
  • The different connotations of supremacy
  • The dangers that come from white supremacy
  • Why people are resistant to dismantling white supremacy
  • Undoing the harmful effects of white supremacy within our white bodies
  • Ways that white people can help dismantle white supremacy

Plastic is everywhere. It means it's even in places you never thought about (like in the clothes you’re wearing right now!). Microplastics are in our oceans. They're in the water we drink. It's everywhere! Unfortunately, plastic is non-biodegradable so it will be here with us for thousands of years. Therefore, plastic is a huge problem.

Admittedly, using less plastic is probably the hardest thing that our family has to deal with. It's so hard to get down to very minimal plastic usage. In today's episode, we're joined by Morgan Cook of Mostly Eco Morgan as she talks about what you need to know about sustainable living and how to use less plastic.

Morgan started out by studying fashion in New York City and ended up learning a ton about the environmental and ethical issues within the fashion industry. So she became really conflicted about her dream of pursuing fashion and eventually decided to launch her blog Mostly Eco Morgan.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Eliminating single-use plastic in your life
  • Ways to reduce plastic when doing groceries
  • What sustainable living means to her
  • What we can do as individuals to reduce the impact of climate change
  • Growing your own food
  • Practicing thrifting, renting, and borrowing

While industrial farming breaks the cycles of nature, regenerative farming works to restart the cycles that we broke with technology in the industrial farm. In this episode, learn more about the benefits of regenerative agriculture and how it works right from this fourth-generation farmer Will Harris.

Will Harris is the CEO of White Oak Pastures, a 152-year-old farm that uses regenerative agriculture, including managed grazing to reduce carbon recharge waterways, preserve habitats, and support rural economies.

White Oak Pastures is one of the only farms in the United States to operate two on-farm USDA-inspected abattoirs for slaughtering red meat and poultry. The conversation doesn't need to be “cattle or no cattle.” Instead, it’s about how we are raising cattle as a critical part of a healthy ecosystem. Farm animals are not only critical for our health, but they also regenerate the land – and that’s the missing link that sadly, many people don’t understand.

In this episode, Will shares how it was like transitioning to regenerative agriculture, the impact of greenwashing done by other companies, and the importance of doing your research when it comes to choosing the food you buy.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Why he decided to go back to a traditional way of farming
  • How the transition affected his finances
  • The concept of greenwashing
  • The importance of certifications and how they manage them
  • Zero-waste system
  • What is regenerative farming?
  • The benefits of regenerative agriculture
  • Understanding the value of getting involved in the process
  • The need for pain to see changes

Do me a favor. Go to your kitchen and check out the kind of cooking oil you’re using (if you don’t know yet). If you’re either using canola oil, soybean oil, or vegetable oil, then I highly suggest you take them out of your house right now. And if you think sunflower oil sounds good, then you better think again. These highly processed oils and fats, typically from seeds, are everywhere – and they’re bad for your health too! So how do we avoid them?

Our guest today, Dr. Anthony Gustin, has fully dived into the world of seed oils. Today, he explains what seed oils are and why they’re so unhealthy for us.

Dr. Gustin is the founder of Perfect Keto and Equip Foods. He is the host of The Natural State Podcast and author of the bestselling book Keto Answers. A former sports rehab clinician turned entrepreneur, Dr. Gustin really has launched several businesses and he is now an amateur farmer. Trained in functional medicine, he has ordered labs and set treatment plans for hundreds of patients.

In 2017, Dr. Gustin founded Perfect Keto to make the ketogenic diet accessible both from a product perspective of sticking to it, as well as content information. Since then, he has published over 1,000 articles and 75 podcasts, and written a book, solving problems and making the keto diet easy to do.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Why anyone should start trying a keto diet
  • Some health benefits of a ketogenic diet
  • What are seed oils, examples, and history
  • Why seed oils are bad for us
  • The effect of bad quality fat on your mitochondria

Celebrating our ten-year anniversary as a married couple, Chaz joins today’s episode as we share some marriage and relationship tips. It’s funny how it feels like it’s just been weeks ago and we also don't feel like we have everything figured out.

When we got married in June of 2012, I was 22 and Chaz was 24. We were pretty young but we thought it was a perfect time. We were also forced to grow up together because we ended up getting pregnant a lot sooner than we had anticipated. Everything we did, we were learning for the first time together. And quickly, we just knew we had to stay together and figure it out.

We are both opposites and we're lucky that we have personalities that mesh well. One of the biggest things in our relationship that I love the most is that we make sure we don’t go to bed angry and that we don’t hold onto things.

We know that's not the case for everybody. But if you are dating someone, we encourage you to seek someone where it feels so easy. It's like your relationship can feel like a flat road. Otherwise, if it's feeling like a daily uphill battle, or you feel like you're fighting a lot, that can be a red flag.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Constantly checking in how each other is feeling
  • Asking open-ended questions
  • Finding work-life balance as parents
  • Why we don’t follow traditional gender roles
  • Habits we’ve developed that have impacted our family life
  • Not going to bed angry and not holding onto things
  • Assuming and believing the best in each other

Imagine this: one drop of oxybenzone (a compound used in sunscreens) in six Olympic-sized swimming pools is enough to negatively impact a reef of that size.

Now imagine what that could do to our bodies?

Unfortunately, a lot of Americans don't make that connection. It’s time to switch from harmful chemical sunscreens to a much better and safer option.

In this episode, Caroline Duell, founder and CEO of All Good, talks about why clean, mineral-based, and reef-friendly sunscreen matters.

Based in Morro Bay, CA, All Good is a company that uses organic and botanical products that serve everyday needs while seeking solutions for a better world. Personally, I love All Good products because they meet all of my standards – they're a certified B Corp, part of the 1% for the Planet Movement, Leaping Bunny certified, climate neutral, reef-friendly, and woman-owned.

What started out as a homespun label and pure labor of love that she gave away to friends or sold at farmer's markets has become an official business eight years later. Today, All Good is a growing brand that has become a staple for people who need it.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • An overview of their products
  • How they have come to design their products
  • Their certifications as an outward communication tool
  • What does it mean to be climate neutral?
  • How they’re dealing with sustainability issues
  • Creating mineral-based, safe sunscreen products
  • The worst ingredients in sunscreen and their harmful effects
  • The importance of Vitamin D supplementation
  • Chemical vs. mineral: Why mineral is the way to go

Do you have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear? Maybe you just don't know how to pair them up. Or maybe the clothes you have no longer work for your lifestyle right now.

In this episode, I’m excited to share this conversation with entrepreneur and author, Alison Lumbatis, who created an entire system called Outfit Formulas. Today, we're going to talk about all things style capsule wardrobe and how to dress every single day, which Alison has made easy for you! Listen in to learn all about style, not only how to dress, but how it can really change your life and show up in the world.

There are different catalysts for the need to rebuild your wardrobe, be that you’ve gained weight or lost some, or maybe you’re entering corporate America for the first time (or leaving corporate America).

Whatever your reason is, know that you have to dress the body you have right now, and giving yourself permission to do that is immensely powerful. We always talk about changing inside-out. Where do you fall on the gluten spectrum? Whether you have celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and you're living gluten-free, or maybe you're just curious about what would happen if you eliminated or lessened gluten in your diet, equipping yourself with the right information is beneficial to your nutrition as a whole.

In today’s episode, Jenny Finke of Good for You Gluten-Free talks about living gluten-free, celiac disease, and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). Author of the book, Dear Gluten, It's Not Me, It's You, Jenny has been gluten-free since April 2012 when she was diagnosed with celiac disease. Aside from her experience of living gluten-free every day, Jenny also has the nutritional qualifications and credentials to confidently chat with us about this topic as a certified holistic nutrition and wellness coach.

Being diagnosed with celiac disease is a journey of learning and growing – and when you know better, you can do better. Jenny remembers her struggles with finding resources that spoke to her when she first went gluten-free 10 years ago. All the information she gathered was about how to live gluten-free and nothing about body healing and the emotional aspect of dealing with the disease.

Jenny then created Good For You Gluten-Free to share some personal stories and recipes, and even why you’re still feeling sick even if you’re already on a gluten-free diet. Quickly, it has grown into a great information site for everyone looking to lead a healthier life.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What is celiac disease?
  • Understanding non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS)
  • Eliminating gluten from your diet
  • How to avoid cross-contamination
  • Going to places you trust when eating out
  • Things you need to know when getting tested

The term “organic” has become a buzzword for quite some time now, and a lot of companies label their products as such claiming it’s a healthier option. But is organic food really better for you?

Today, we are going to talk about organic food in the United States since every single country has different requirements for the label “organic.” We dive in specifically to what the USDA-certified organic label means in the United States.

The research I've done revealed to me that the term organic is completely misunderstood in our environment. A lot of people think that being organic means being more expensive. Many think organic means it came from the ground, so why pay more for an organic product than a regular one?

My goal for today is to clarify what the word organic means, and why it is better for you and the environment. As more and more of us buy organic, hopefully, it will encourage more farmers to make the switch because we are voting with our purchases.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The official definition of organic
  • The lack of clarity about what certified organic really means
  • Organic vs. natural
  • More USDA definitions specific to what you’re growing
  • The benefits of organic foods and products
  • The dangers of pesticides and herbicides
  • Why organic is better for the environment
  • Why organic products are more expensive
  • Ways to make organic cheaper
  • How organic certification inspection works

Are you a neat freak or are you clutter-blind? Does a sink full of dishes ever bother you or do you just pass by it as if you didn’t even see it?

You see, there's a connection between people's motivation based on their Enneagram type and how they respond to clutter, whether they are super controlling and averse to clutter, or clutter blind.

In this episode, I’m joined by Laurie Palau, the founder of Simply B Organized, and she can help you clear the clutter for good. Laurie is also the host of the top-rated podcast This Organized Life and the author of the book “Hot Mess.” Laurie has been studying the psychology of clutter for several years and has recently been diving into how she can use the knowledge from the Enneagram to help people clear their clutter.

Today, we’re going to do an overview of all nine Enneagram types, the common pitfalls, and the things that people can do when it comes to clutter and organizing their homes and their lives.

Knowing your Enneagram type can be extremely useful when it comes to organizing stuff around your house and your life – whether we’re talking about the material/physical clutter, emotional clutter, or calendar clutter.

Laurie points out that it's not about labeling people or labeling things, but it's important to be able to provide language where you can articulate and communicate what you do. Because a lot of times, we get frustrated with things since we don't have the language to articulate them.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What is an Enneagram?
  • Looking at the psychology of clutter
  • The Enneagram image and its Christian roots
  • Developing grace and empathy for other people
  • How the Enneagram impacts your life
  • How it allows you to understand other people better
  • An overview of the nine types

Imagine if you could put wonder into your life. How would that benefit and bless you and the people around you? Today's guest, Taylor Hughes has built his life around this idea of chasing wonder. A magician, author, speaker, entertainer, and coach, Taylor talks specifically about publishing a book (especially if you're thinking about the self-publishing route) as well as some tips and expertise around public speaking.

As a speaker and performer, Taylor does a lot of storytelling – some comedy, some magic – but it's always about trying to connect people to this idea of wonder and what else might be out there for you in your life if you stay just present and engaged.

Taylor fell in love with magic tricks when he was seven years old and he has just become obsessed with magic since then. Over the years, when the tricks didn't work, comedy worked itself into the show. Then his wife eventually encouraged him to show off his storytelling skills. Now, his focus isn't on the tricks he wants to do, but on what stories Taylor wants to share.

One of the most important things you will be taking away from this episode is how you need to commit to something you’ve always wanted to do as if it’s a done deal, then work background. Whether that’s writing a book or speaking in front of everyone, it’s all about the message you want to get across. And once you get that right, all the fear and doubt will naturally fade into the background.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Taylor’s transition from youth pastor to a magician
  • Learning how to pivot through the pandemic
  • Taking a negative situation into encouragement
  • Lessons from book writing and self-publishing
  • Average publishing timeline
  • Committing yourself to something you want to do
  • About Taylor’s first public speaking course
  • Why you should start writing down your takeaway sentence first

In this episode, let's talk about chronic health issues with Jennifer Robins of Predominantly Paleo and Legit Bread Company. Jennifer has received over 20 different diagnoses from a variety of health care specialists. And today, we’re going to hear her story of how she came to be on the other side of it.

Jennifer dealt with a lot of symptoms that included severe panic attacks, which she thought attributed to her breast implants that she got back in 2009, without being aware of the dangers associated.

March is Breast Implant Awareness Month, which is what initially sparked me to interview Jennifer on the show today. But we will specifically focus on the struggles of chronic illness in general.

We discuss the role of neuroplasticity in healing chronic illnesses. A lot of pain management is mental, but there’s no way you can just think yourself out of it. It takes time and certain techniques to retrain your brain to behave and believe differently than it ever had before.

Healing takes place not just by treating the diagnosis as well, but you have to carefully examine a lot of other things that might have been on the periphery. Whether that's childhood trauma, or recent trauma, or things even in the past two years with the pandemic, everything that you experience can play a role in your physical and mental well being.

If you are dealing with any chronic illnesses, hopefully, this conversation will give you ideas on how to continue to heal your illnesses as well as give you some spark of joy and hope in knowing that healing is also possible for you.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Jennifer’s health journey
  • The potential side effects of breast implants
  • Making changes in her diet
  • The role of neuroplasticity in healing chronic pain and illness

Nine years ago, I had our first baby girl, Ella. Today, I want to celebrate my sweet little girl by sharing her birth story with you.

Just a brief backstory, my husband, Chaz, and I met back in college and we got married at 21. Six weeks later, we got pregnant with Ella. It wasn't the timing that we were hoping for. I was 22 when I got pregnant, and 23 when I had Ella. I was so young and I barely knew anything. But we definitely got to a place where we were excited about being pregnant.

Fast-forward to March 10, I experienced some stomach cramps at 5 am. Thinking it was just a stomachache, I went to the bathroom, started pushing, and had the weirdest feeling I had ever felt in my life. And so, I called Chaz into the bathroom and he got a pocket medical flashlight out and told me I was crowning – meaning, Ella was about to come out!

When we got to the hospital, my body couldn't process what was happening. It was a traumatic situation seeing how things were happening too early, too soon, and way too fast. The entire time, Chaz was sobbing thinking I was crowning because the baby was stillborn. He was upset and I couldn't even process anything so I didn't know what to think.

When I was at the ER, the doctor asked me to push. Still confused about what was happening, I did it anyway, and Ella came out – and she’s alive! Then she was put in the NICU for five weeks where she did phenomenally well.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Ella’s birth story
  • The original birthing plan

Cooking can be joyful, but some of that joy could get lost when you’re cooking day in and day out. So how do you make cooking more fun, less stressful, and awesomely tasteful?

People have this idea of what meal prep is in their heads, but they got it all wrong. In fact, it can be as easy as doing a two-hour prep for the week or whatever that looks like for you in your own kitchen. At the end of the day, meal prep does not have to be overwhelming, and it can set you up for success throughout your entire week.

In today’s episode, Teri Turner of No Crumbs Left joins me to talk about our virtual book tour for Prep, Cook, Freeze – it’s my new cookbook that I’ve cooked up to help you embrace batch cooking, making quick and easy meals that you can enjoy with your family and friends!

The batch-cook-freeze-a-section was actually the backbone of this method, minus the element of those terrible freezer meals that your grandma used to pull out. So as you're prepping once for two weeks of meals, you eat it once fresh, freeze a part of it, and then eat it again another time. And what’s fun about it is you’re still bringing in the fresh element, which means that while you’re thawing something from the freezer, you’re also bringing fresh ingredients into the mix.

Teri Turner is a Whole30 paleo gluten-free blogger and author of the bestselling No Crumbs Left Cookbook. Teri has the superpower of making Whole30 recipes marvelous, with her Marinated Red Onions MAGIC ELIXIRS (TM) and Heroine Chicken as just two of the most talked-about and most celebrated recipes.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Teri’s blogging and podcasting journey
  • Making a nutritional choice for a developing child
  • Why embrace batch cooking
  • Great recipes for Prep, Cook, Freeze
  • The easiest things to freeze
  • More stress-free tips for prepping food
  • Our book writing processes
  • Strategies to make cooking joyful

Have you ever bothered to check the content label on the back of your wine bottle? Well, guess what, there probably isn’t any. And that’s because these large wine conglomerates do not want you to know what’s in them.

The truth is, to make wine in large quantities and exhibit different taste profiles, those large factories use a lot of additives and chemicals. And by the way, just because a wine is organic doesn't make it natural.

Natural wines only make up less than 1% of the world's wine supply. In this episode, Todd White, the Founder of Dry Farm Wines, talks about the dark secrets of the wine industry and how natural wines make a much healthier and tastier option. The largest buyer and seller of natural wines in the world, Dry Farm Wines are sugar-free, additive-free, lower in alcohol, and irrigation-free – saving around a billion gallons of water per year.

Like the food industry, the wine industry apparently has so much going on behind the scenes. And this episode has just given me so much clarity around what we should be looking for in wines. Hence, if you must drink wine, choose what's going to make you feel the best with the lowest risk.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How Todd grew Dry Farm Wines
  • Why the wine industry loves higher alcohols
  • The dark secrets of the wine business
  • What makes a natural wine
  • The difference between wild yeast and lab-cultured yeast
  • Some dry farming basics
  • Getting the word out to make an impact

This is a very special episode as I'm bringing in my husband, Chaz Fausel, for a fun, light conversation as we look back on our ten years of marriage. We share stories of how we met, why we’re so different in so many ways, and some tips for a successful marriage.

Chaz is an introvert and Enneagram Type 9, while I’m a Type 7. The 9s are typically steadfast while the 7s are all things fun. Chaz is good at processes, systemically looking at things, and being able to change things. I, on the other hand, am such a dreamer. I’m very future-oriented, always thinking about the next trip and the next fun thing we're going to do. And so, we are essentially opposite in every single way. We have different personalities and that’s probably the main reason we complement each other.

Chaz is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) doctor. Today, we also cover the difference between acute inflammation and chronic inflammation as well as the impact of eating in a low inflammatory style as it relates to decreasing chronic inflammation.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How we met
  • Chaz’ medical journey and why he chose PM&R
  • His career backup choice
  • What is inflammation?
  • Acute inflammation versus chronic inflammation
  • How to deal with chronic inflammation
  • Knowing your baseline level of inflammation
  • Tips for a successful marriage

Let’s face it – it seems inevitable to get COVID at this point, especially with the Omicron variant. Although COVID became a reality in the United States in March 2020, it actually took two years for me and my family to get it. Still, I’m thankful it was the Omicron variant and not the previous variants that seemed a lot harsher. In this episode, I’m sharing with you my journey through COVID as well as the protocol I followed to manage and help alleviate our symptoms. Overall, I’m thankful that my family and I just had mild symptoms and that we have the tools to get over it.

I just would like to say, too, that 98% of the protocol I’m sharing with you today was from my functional nutritionist Katie Braswell, who was here on the podcast back in Episode 04 talking all about thyroid health. Whatever I’m sharing here is in no way medical advice but just a personal protocol that I chose to follow. These are things I noticed were very beneficial, and that worked for me. So be sure to always ask your doctor before starting anything new.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • My COVID journey
  • The symptoms I experienced
  • Gargling warm water and taking Epsom baths
  • Eating nutrient-dense food
  • Supplements I’ve taken
  • Getting enough sunshine for Vitamin D and energy boost
  • Using Immune- boosting essential oils

In this episode, we are graced by the presence of educator and advocate for the liberation of Black children, Keonnie Igwe. Keonnie started her career as a teacher and then moved into being a children's minister for a couple of years. Currently, she works in policy full-time and goes to school full time for Master of Divinity where she focuses on race, religion, and religious education.

Join us today as Keonnie offers a wealth of knowledge about liberation, white privilege, white normalcy, white supremacy, and some things we can do to go deeper into our anti-racism journey beyond just reading books about racism.

I got to ask Keonnie two other questions after our episode and I wanted to share her answers with you:

At the end of your life, what would a successful life look like to you?

More Black children who are so deeply loved and truly safe that they are free to be themselves and create a world where that's the norm- both those I raise and those I know.

What's an area that you feel like you're truly intentional about and what's something you'd like to be more intentional about?

I'm really intentional about my language around children and justice work. I'd really like to be increasingly intentional with my time and who/what I give it to.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Using the term liberation over racial reconciliation
  • The impact of systematic disenfranchisement
  • The material realities that need policy change
  • Using your white advantage to make an impact instead of turning back
  • How we can take action and ways to work against white saviorism
  • How white normalcy has turned into white supremacy
  • How to get involved

January is thyroid awareness month. In this episode, Caroline dives into all things thyroid in her conversation with holistic nutritionist Katie Braswell of Wild + Well, based in Boulder, CO. Katie explains that a lot of practitioners will often say your hormones are out of whack. They're not wrong – but what's the deeper cause?

In Katie's experience, it could be due to food sensitivity or even something like mold exposure and parasites in your history that need to be cleared from the system so your hormones can work appropriately. And one of the biggest things she sees is liver stagnation. Our livers are responsible for detoxing the system and clearing things. And so, when we see that the liver is not functioning appropriately, that's where we need to take a deeper look as it relates to hormone changes. Because, oftentimes with hormones, there's a little more going on that we really need to look into.

Katie's end goal is to try to get the clients off of the medication and get to the point that the thyroid is functioning on its own. Because once you start doing thyroid medications, you can sometimes get to a point that the thyroid stops firing. It stops working on its own, and that's a dangerous place to get into because you will then be subjecting yourself to a lifelong situation of thyroid medication to manage your health. Therefore, there has to be this delicate balance.

This conversation is important because there might be things discussed here that could be indicative of some thyroid issues that you’re probably just letting off the hook. Knowledge is power. Therefore, it’s always better to err on the side of knowledge and get the test and help you need before things could fall off the wayside. So you have to advocate for yourself and get the care and support that you deserve.

Katie's Bio:

Katie Braswell, of Wild + Well, is a Holistic Nutritionist based in Boulder, CO. She is passionate about working alongside women throughout their journey through childbirth, especially after her experiences with the birth of her son. Katie’s specific areas of interest are preconception health, fertility, prenatal nutrition and supplementation, gestational diabetes, breastfeeding, and postpartum nutrition/care (focusing on nurturing mama and baby). She believes in meeting her clients where they are in their health journey to regain balance and vibrant health!

She specializes in functional nutrition for families – especially the mama or mama-to-be who is looking to maximize their time adventuring with their little ones! Katie believes in meeting her clients where they are in their health journey to regain balance and vibrant health. Katie offers one-on-one nutritional and supplementation consultation packages, custom meal plan and prep consults, as well as, private and group yoga classes. Check out her website to learn more!

Wild + Well does not provide any medical advice and is not intended as a substitute for the advice provided by your healthcare professional. I am not a doctor nor do I claim to be and nothing you read here should be taken as medical advice.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The thyroid and its function
  • Early signs when the thyroid can go wrong
  • Screening and tests to check your thyroid health
  • Diving deeper into the root causes of thyroid dysregulation
  • Looking at the role of liver stagnation
  • Mineral supplementation and food sources to improve thyroid health

An expert in the nutrition field, Alison Marras of Food by Mars joins us today to talk all about the gut and how you can heal your gut naturally. As a nutritional therapy practitioner, Alison stresses the importance of doing whatever you can to support your body. Our bodies are super resilient, especially women. But what are we doing to support it? This is where food and lifestyle can be incredibly helpful.

Alison started Food by Mars in 2014 as a creative outlet because she was burning out at work. Seeing how her health was on the decline, she thought it was fun to learn food photography and practice more cooking. As she was progressing, her nutrition changed and she leaned more into the paleo diet. Realizing how you can take your health into your hands, she wanted to make preparing food easier for people and making it really delicious.

Most of our immune system is in our gut, that's why we have to pay attention to it, and support, heal, and nourish it. Food is medicine and it has an impact on your body. Unfortunately, people tend to demonize food.

Alison explains that food sensitivity is more like a symptom than the root cause itself (with the exception of food allergy.) But the idea is you could get back to those foods eventually after you start healing the gut. The reason you start to see so many symptoms is you can't assimilate the nutrients even when you're eating healthy. Hence, when your digestion is out of whack, nothing is going to really work appropriately. But once you're able to dig in and look at the root cause of things, you will realize it's not that hard after all.

Ultimately, you need to get these foundational things working so your body can heal itself. We don't want these food issues to stay in our lives forever and be stuck to this rigidity. We want our diets to be as expansive as possible. That’s why Alison is here to teach you how to do this joyfully and easily because we're all in it for the long haul.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Understanding your gut
  • How leaky gut works and why it causes food sensitivity
  • The need to assimilate your nutrients
  • How the food sensitivity testing works
  • Some meal planning tips to help you heal your gut
  • When to do elimination diet and spacing out reintroductions
  • The different phases of the AIP (autoimmune protocol) diet
  • Getting help from digestive enzymes and minerals

In today's episode, Caroline shares her story – growing up in Brentwood, a town south of Nashville, TN. Consistently ranked as the 10th wealthiest county in the United States, Caroline didn’t realize she was living in a bubble with people exactly like her in every way. According to Caroline, you can't fully appreciate how different your life experiences are until you've actually come out of the snowglobe and you're living life on the other side. When Caroline left, she realized that what represents her world doesn't necessarily represent the whole world.

Growing up in the South also affected Caroline's views of health and wellness. In fact, the Midwest and the South tie in for the highest rates of adult obesity at 34.1%. Caroline and her husband, Chaz, went vegetarian for five years until they started questioning whether it was the best choice for their daughter. They tried to stay up to date on the latest nutrition science when they started feeding Ella solids until they learned about the Paleo Diet and they thought it just made so much sense.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Living in her Brentwood bubble
  • Growing up feeling she had a major health issue
  • Caroline’s educational background
  • The decision to be a vegetarian and their transition to paleo
  • How Caroline benefited from a paleo diet
  • Her journey creating recipes, writing a blog, and turning it into a cookbook

How do you build a healthy, connected, and intentional life that fulfills your greatest purpose? In this episode, Caroline Fausel shares how it all started. She talks about her journey, how she became an intentionalist and why she created this podcast.

A voracious reader herself, Caroline also shares some books that have changed her life and shaped her aspiration for intentionalism in all aspects of her life.

For instance, the book “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer heavily influenced her to become vegetarian. She thought it was a good way to bio-hack her genetics and keep certain diseases at bay. Learning about factory farming and what’s in our food also sparked her passion for the environment. She believes that while individual action is not enough to turn the entire environment around, it's definitely a huge part of it, and it's something she could do.

Eventually, upon reading “It Starts with Food” by Melissa and Dallas Hartwig, which talks about nutrition science, she went straight from vegan to the paleo-based Whole30 diet, which she and her husband, Chaz, did for 30 days. It was an intense time but they felt better than ever and they became more intentional about what they were eating. And so, the book is what started it all for her – the lifestyle, the blog, and this podcast.

In this episode, Caroline shares how becoming intentional has dramatically changed the way she lives her life – as a wife, as a mother, and as a human being.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Books on nutrition
  • Books on minimalism
  • Books on marriage
  • Books on parenting
  • Books on personal growth and development
