Went to see the man, the myth, the legend himself, Sean Paul last week live in concert during the Reggaelake Festival in Amsterdam. My expectations were met above and beyond and he did not dissapoint. I haven't been to many shows so far, but this one definitely goes into the top 5. Here's a one minute impression of the overall vibes of the night.

We recently went on a trip to a local area, some would say nature park, that used to be a cocoa/coffee plantation back in the slavery days. There were quite some interesting things to see there. They basically just cleaned up the original plantation paths so people can walk around in this big area. They even hardened the main path with more sand, so the whole thing is not a completely muddy experience. But enough about that.
Whenever we go on trips to spots that emanate a bit of historical value, @tanjakolader does a great job of explaining the cultural and historical significance of the place. So you can read more about that here: Visiting Nature Park Peperpot 🎋 An Old Plantation in Commewijne Suriname Usually I'm just along for the adventure which often leads to fun distractions and exploring things that aren't on the main road or path. This is exactly what happens when we we're walking the designated route, when I saw that there was a path to the left with a lizard staring at me. So I called my parents, sister and Tanja, telling them I was gonna check it out.
To access the alternative path you have to cross a part of the swamp on three not so broad wooden planks that wobble a bit. Obviously we then crossed it. My dad and me went ahead first, and then the rest, after they decided it was safe enough. This is where the weirdness started as the iguana that was awaiting travelers started moving forward, staying on the path. Weird indeed, because these guys usually sprint into hiding at the slightest sound or movement from others. In this case we expected him to run to the right into the forest. But he didn't, he strolled along, as if to guide us somewhere.
So there we were then. Captain iguana in front closely followed by me, then my dad and then the rest. I was about 1 to 2 meters away from him, but he didn't seem to mind. My dad joked that it was probably the spirit of a plantation slave or worker leading us either to treasure or a trap. He even kept looking back at us, to check if we were still following.
After about 100 meters he stopped right beside an open piece of water. Looking back at us. We stopped as well of course and wait for quite a while to see if he would continue.
But he didn't continue. And that was that. The last thing I was gonna do is pass him to go further, not taking any chances that it might actually be an ill-wishing spirit. So I literally told him that if this is as far as he's going, then we will turn around and head back, which is what we did. I wonder if the lizard spirit understood me.
So after a fun and unique experience we headed back to the main path and continued the trip. Maybe one day I will return and explore that path beyond that point. Who knows what animal or other phenomenon might surprise us then.

I recently wrote about my experience playing outdoor volleyball after almost 2 years of not doing so. However, the essence of the previous sentence remains in the word "tried", Either it's difficult to catch me in action, or there was no action to speak of. I personally like to think that I'm too fast for the camera, but that's just me. Browsing through the attempts, I decided to share this video, where at the end you can see I instinctively go for a block. I say instinctively because at this point my body moves on its own, knowing what to do in different scenarios on the field. That's a double-edged sword though, because my body moving on its own did not agree with some muscles I haven't used as intense the past 2 years, which resulted in quite a bit of pain the next day. But it was a fun day, and it's quite interesting to see myself move, compared to being in the action.

I recently wrote about a trip through the rainforest of Suriname to eventually climb a mountain. https://peakd.com/hive-183952/@rarej/strolling-through-the-jungle-chilling-on-the-mountain-top-voltz-mountain-in-suriname That was about a four hour trip to the mountain and four hours back, almost a full day of travel. All while struggling with shoes that were on the edge of falling apart. But in that struggle, I took the time to take a quick 20 sec video of the 4 hour trip. Even though it may sound tiring, it is in fact very relaxing walking throughout all that greenery. Whether you have talkative people around you or just vibe with the aura of the forest, it is a very long walk that brings true inner peace. 10 out of 10 would do again.

That being said the rivers in Suriname are not all that bad. They can be very relaxing to travel on and swim in. As anything in life, there are positives and negatives to be applied. The Yin and Yangs of the world are all around us. Even though this same canoe-like boat had traumatized me the night before, I could feel the stress leave my body the day after as we were traveling to and from the next event for the weekend.

Living in a new home and all, there are certain things you take with you and certain things you don't. Having said that, we decided to not spend any money on unnecessary things and instead save that money we would have spent for future travel. This includes holiday/christmas decorations. So no lights, no tree, etc. Nothing except good delicious food of course, that definitely falls under the "necessary" category. But being the geek that I am, I did something to decorate anyway, which didn't cost me anything but some time and coding. As it happens I have 2 Arduino Uno's at home. These are microcontrollers, which are mini-computers, simply said, that enable someone to automate simple mechanical tasks or movements. A microcontroller consists of a processor that does all of the operation, and it also has various input and output pins to send and receive signals to and from different components. Coincidentally I am also a university lecturer in this subject, so it was smooth sailing from the start. Due to my position teaching this subject I also have a full starter kit of different components. So with little time, and a lazy attitude xD, I decided to do something simple in the form of flickering Christmas lights.
So I opened up the starter kit and went to work. And in about half an hour I had my setup.
It's a simple setup, with the green led lights connected to one digital output and the red led lights connected to another. Of course each led is in series with a 330 ohm resistor to make sure they don't burn out due to overload. To close the circuit all led lights lead to a ground port of the Arduino.
Before the action starts, I had to program the behavior of the Arduino. The behavior of the two digital ports used to be exact. Here's the code for any enthusiasts. But them again, an enthusiast would know how to make this from scratch. :) I had the two different colors alternate and then light up at the same time, with decreasing delay intervals, meaning they would flicker faster each time and then reset and repeat the process.

Once the code on my laptop was finished, I uploaded that through the Arduino software.
The moral of the story is that you don't need to spend money to bring a little bit of positive spirit into your home. Even if you don't have a microcontroller like me, something is still possible. A friend of mine, for example, made a tree and a reindeer out of cardboard boxes and that already cheered up his whole living room.
