Audio blog by writer and blogger, Jess Chua. Self-narrated episodes based on personal blog posts covering creative writing, books, film reviews, and thoughtful thoughts.
Here's one of my old witch-themed, microfiction pieces that I recently narrated.
I've also included a link to a YouTube/video version below.
I've always enjoyed lyric videos and would like to try it for some of my dragon poems once those are completed.

SCRIPT
Hello, I’m Jess Chua, and welcome to Microcast Musings.
This is my quiet audio journal. It’s made up of voice notes, with mundane rambles mixed in with mythic inspirations.
I’ve been running a dragon website, Dragonsinn.com, since 1999, but I’ve only recently been sharing my thoughts or poetic writings verbally, whether it’s through this microcast or my tiny YouTube channel.
So if you enjoy creative and personal reflections, join me for a moment as I share snippets of thought, and (hopefully) some moments of growth.

SUMMARY: Welcome to episode fifty: "A Change in Pace." 🎉 I think it’s a fitting title because this microcast started as a way for me to gently challenge myself, especially around speech anxiety.
Over time, it’s shifted into something more exploratory. Now it's less about getting it "right" and more about following curiosity through sound and rhythm.
Speaking about sound and rhythm, I thought I’d start this off by sharing some brief thoughts on how I write and speak—and how recent experiences have made me think about it in new ways.

It's been about a month since I deleted the Reddit app off my phone, specifically to make more time for reading and writing.
The first few days were a bit of a shock as I didn't realize just how much of a distraction it had been. I noticed I was feeling more emotionally intense with certain things once I'd stopped scrolling out of habit.
I'll still always have a soft spot for Reddit, as it was there for many during some very difficult times of my life, and I don't think it's all bad if it's used in moderation.

I also mention a 555 writing challenge I'm taking part in this week. That's possibly gonna be the topic of a future microcast.

Mini review/recap of my first small group public speaking class, via Magnetic Speaking.
I was a bit intimidated as I was the only one in the group not currently in a leadership position, but hey, we all have to start somewhere...the coach was great and I'll be joining the next session.

Mini book review on "French Women Don't Get Fat," which was published back in 2005.
I briefly mention my increasing sedentariness over the past 1.5 years, a bit of puppy fat during my teenage years, and some thoughts on being more streamlined with blogging and microcasting.

Britney Spears' memoir is being released on 24 October 2023.
I briefly talk about her abortion, JT, and an interview she did with Diane Sawyer back in the early 2000s which was way out of line in so many ways.

I've started a YouTube channel to post short videos / vlogs.
They'll be a way for me to keep track of and share various writing and sketching projects.

Today, I ponder on my early publishing credits under my retired pen name.
I've been thinking of adding some resources to my website on how writers can start to build publishing credits in literary magazines and journals.
Also, a thought about starting a YouTube channel (an anomaly for a recluse like me).

For my 10th microcast, I do a poetry reading of my poem "I Should've Known."
It was originally published by The Five-Two crime poetry journal, and also appears in my debut chapbook let it rip.

I had no notes written down for this microcast. In future, I'm gonna try and do a little bit of pre-planning in terms of speeding up my thoughts, so that there are fewer staccato pauses when I'm deeply thinking about something.
These are the 3 videos mentioned in the episode:
1) The Jackson 5 | Dancing Machine - Tonight Show with Johnny Carson 1974
2) Michael Jackson - Jam | Live at Wembley, 1992 | Remaster
3) Michael Jackson's Drummer Jonathan Moffett Performs "Give in to Me/Dirty Diana" (Rock Medley)
Recorded in Maine and using my Bose headset.

I had very sparse notes written down for this microcast, so that to me is progress as someone who occasionally struggles with impromptu speaking. I'd like to slightly improve on the pace and energy in tone in my next microcast, if possible.
As a follow-up from the previous microcast, I decided to share some thoughts on things that make me feel confident in this microcast.
Recorded in Maine and using my Bose headset.

Sharing some thoughts on hurricane anxiety and how I'd like to reflect on ways to stay confident during stressful situations.
P.S. Trying to hide my wires from my parents' cats who like to chew on them.
P.P.S. Maybe I'll be a bit more descriptive with my various hurricane experiences in my next microcast.

I try out my Bose headset for this microcast, and share some thoughts on life in Maine plus how I'd like to improve my author bio.
I recorded this while lying down. I'm going to try standing or sitting up straight next time to see if that helps with my speech volume.
