Speak Your Piece is an award-winning program broadcasting from Cody Wyoming on KODI Radio, AM 1400 and 96.7 FM. Guests join us on KODI to discuss a variety of topics around Cody, the state of Wyoming, and nationally. Including local organizations, businesses, and citizens, to talk about matters that are happening around our community.
Casper native Brooke Schmill is touring the Cowboy State with her new film, "Turning Point" which is about suicide and the effects it has on family and friends of those who take their lives. Brooke spent two months talking to a mayor, a coroner, a sheriff, local volunteers, suicide survivors and parents whose children took their own lives. Schmill lost her friend to suicide in 2006 right after she lost her mother to cancer. She spoke about loss, grief, healing and how making this film was cathartic for her personal journey. She hopes that her film will spread the word about suicide in Wyoming and start conversations about getting people in crisis the help they need.

EJ House, CEO of the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the new initiative that will start in January. The Chamber has come up with a 401K plan that members of the Chamber who run small and medium-sized businesses can take advantage of and offer to their employees. With the summer tourist season closing down, he spoke about how Park County did as far as tourist numbers and revenue. Also, EJ shared his 9/11 story. He was working for the Pentagon in an off-site location outside of DC when the plane struck in 2001.

Rick Ridgeway, a self-described "adventurer, writer, photographer, marketer, and adventure capitalist," was joined by Corey Anco, The Willis McDonald IV Curator of Natural Science for the Center of the West, to talk about a multi-media presentation, meet-and-greet and book signing at the Center of the West. Rick spoke about his life as conservationist, including 15 years at Patagonia, and his new book, "Life Lived Wild."

Brad Cline, from the Wyoming Veterans Commission, spoke about changes in VA benefits. Changes that affect the PACT Act, Veteran Pensions, Survivor Benefits, as well as state benefits. He also spoke about becoming a life coach and how that he is using his skills in that area to help veterans in the Big Horn Basin.

Aaron Buck, Director of Yellowstone Regional Airport, spoke about the airport's upcoming event named, "Once In A Blue Moon - Run The Runway Event" which is a 5 or 10K run or walk on the runway that will be closed. Since a rare super moon will be in the sky, the event is at night. Aaron also talked about the terminal project that is almost complete and will expand the footprint of the terminal.

Cody native, Matthew Taggart, is a film maker who has a new movie entitled, "Counterfeit Kid." Matthew spoke about growing up in Cody, graduating from Cody High School and how his hometown can be seen in his work. He also spoke about his favorite directors, how his wife helps him in the process and what he would like to direct next.

Tam DeRudder Jackson, LindaRae Sande, and Sara Vinduska, all romance writers, spoke about the Cody Romance Roundup event that happens at the Chamberlin Inn Courtyard this weekend. 18 writers, all in the romance genre will be there to talk about their works, sign books and share specialty cocktails. Tam, LindaRae, and Sara also spoke about their particular careers, what makes a good romance novel, the difference between romance and erotica novels as well as how they became writers.

Brook Grant, who started Compete 4 A Cause five years ago, is gearing up for another event on August 12th at the Wynona Thompson Auditorium. This year they have added a Visual Arts Competition and will have a special guest singer. A little girl named Nilah Marx is the recipient this year and the goal is to raise $30K for the family to help with their daughter's care.

Newly-appointed Chief of Police for Cody, Jason Stafford, spoke about his first month as police chief, what he learned from his predecessor as well as the challenges Cody faces moving forward. He also gave his perspective on law enforcement policies and procedures and the shape of the Cody PD as it is now. Chief Stafford also spoke about his love of the outdoors and how he is also a freelance outdoors writer for a number of publications.

Yellowstone Regional Airport Director, Aaron Buck, spoke about the new terminal project that will expand the footprint of the interior by 2,000 square feet, making it roomier for TSA to do their job and passengers to move about easier to get to their flight. He also spoke about the Once In A Blue Moon Run the Runway event on August 30th on the airport runway under the blue moon. Aaron also spoke about the airport's goal to get another carrier to service Cody/Yellowstone by next summer by hiring a consultant.

World renowned British watercolor artist and Collier-Read Director of Curatorial, Education, and Museum Services Karen Brooks McWhorter spoke about the new exhibit that will be on display until mid-October. Entitled, Tony Foster: Watercolours from the Green River, is about many things, but certainly Tony's love of Wyoming. Tony spoke about how he got started in art, developed his style in watercolors and why he loves hiking in to an unknown region of the world and capturing its beauty in watercolor.

Bruce Salzman, President of First Hunt Foundation out of Meeteetse, spoke about what the foundation does and how it helps preserve and educate women, youth and families about hunting by helping interested candidates to go on their first hunt and enjoy the experience. First Hunt Foundation was started by a man in Idaho but it has expanded throughout the nation. Bruce also tells the story of how he was introduced to hunting and why he thinks it's important for ecological health.

Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction, Megan Degenfelder, back in May of this year, came up with a strategic plan for Wyoming Department of Education for 2023-2027. The plan includes six key goals: parental empowerment, career and technical education, citizenship, efficiency, teachers and literacy. We spoke about all these things and more about how she plans to improve educational experiences for students and educational standards in Wyoming public schools.

Ben Williams, owner of the W Arena, and Albert Dines, a band member of the house band at the W, spoke about the history of the W Arena and how, as musicians, they've played all over the country, and now they're hosting a house-band-session once a month where people can come with all levels of talents to jam in a relaxed setting. Sabine Born started 307 Happy Dog because she loves animals and teaching people how to be better dog owners. Trained in many types of canine behavior, Sabine shares her philosophy on dog training and answers the question, "Is there such a thing as a BAD dog?" She moved here in 2017 from Billings, Montana, but has been all over the world, getting her education and working on cruise ships that took her from the fjords of Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. Originally born in Hamburg, Germany, Sabine has always had a passion for animals, especially horses and dogs, and the wide open spaces of the Mountain West.

Today, I took a different approach on Speak Your Piece. I didn't have a guest, the person I wanted to hear from was you. I wanted to hear your opinion of what happened at the Public Meeting at the Cody Auditorium about the proposed LDS temple that will be built on Skyline Drive. The silence was deafening. I had one caller. One. The caller didn't attend the meeting, so I had to let her go. I know the community is talking about this, I read the social media posts, I see people in the grocery store. This is an important issue that we need BOTH sides to talk about the proposal. Thank you to Terry Skinner from Preserve Our Cody Neighborhoods who took my invitation to heart and came to the radio station to express his opinion. He attended the meeting and described what happened from his point of view.

Stephany Anderson and Donnie Anderson lost their son and grandson, respectively, and decided to keep his memory alive by starting the Skyler Gabel Group in 2016. The non-profit raises money for many youth programs in Park County as well as the state to honor Skyler, who tragically passed way too young at the age of 18. Mom spoke about Skyler and how he always wanted to be outdoors, whether that be hunting or fishing, riding into the mountains or teaching others the joy that is the state of Wyoming. Although Skyler felt confined and didn't enjoy being inside at school, he was an excellent writer and passionate about the Second Amendment and history. Donnie reflected on the lessons that Skyler taught him as a grandfather, noting that his grandson, "taught me that anyone could learn anything if there were passionate about [the subject matter]." The Skyler Gabel Group is hosting a Gear and Tack Swap Meet on Saturday, June 17th in Ralston across from Mule Days off the Powell Highway. Cody Beers, Public Relations Specialist for WYDOT, spoke about the busy week that the Department of Transportation had with the mudslide that closed the road in both directions outside of the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Cody also talked about other projects that are going on in Park County, including the Shoshone River Bridge project currently going on. He also spoke about road safety for tourist season as well as keeping your distance from wildlife in and around Yellowstone.

Debbie Cobb is a researcher and senior student at the University of Wyoming and is beginning a project about ghost and the paranormal in haunted, historic hotels in Wyoming, including the Irma Hotel right here in Cody. Her project is entitled, "An Analysis of Paranormal Experiences At Historic Wyoming Hotels." She is urging my listeners to share their experiences at hotels like the Irma and across Wyoming, to help her with this endeavor. It should be a fascinating read when Debbie is finished!

Megan Hays Reid, from Cokeville, Wyoming, is a contestant on MasterChef with Gordon Ramsey on Fox. Megan talks about how Fox producers found her in the middle-of-nowhere Wyoming through social media. She also spoke about why she and her husband uprooted their family and moved to Cokeville (pop. 500) to restore and run a motel as well as what happen during her time on MasterChef "United Tastes of America" which airs Wednesday night on Fox.

Singer Jillian Nordberg and her mom, Carolyn, spoke about when she first started singing at age 3, what kinds of songs she writes, and what she plans to do in high school. She will be a freshman next semester at CHS. Carolyn gave insight into how she and her husband navigate raising a child with an exceptional talent. Dean Lomax, Ph.D., from the University of Manchester in England, spoke about his appearance at Jurassic Fest that is happening in Thermopolis on June 23rd and 24th. Dr. Lomax will be speaking about his discoveries as well as his research into all things dinosaurs. He also spoke about his time in Wyoming and working on fossils and how he got his Ph.D. as well as telling the story of what it was like for him and his crew when they discovered the fossilized remains of a dinosaur species in Britain.

Alex Aguirre, co-director of Dano Youth Camp here in Park County, spoke about how their camp takes teens for 8 days to camping spots all over Park County. Author Eric Muller, who teaches law at the University of North Carolina and who taught for years at the University of Wyoming, has written a new book titled, "Lawyer, Jailer, Ally, Foe - Complicity and Conscience in America's World War II Concentration Camps," about three white lawyers who were assigned by the government to Japanese concentration camps in Wyoming and Arizona to legally guide and report to the WRA about their legal counsel as well as how they kept the camps running. Eric will be at the Heart Mountain Interpretative Center in July for the 2023 Pilgrimage.

Ken Straniere, PR and Marketing Manager, and Karen McWhorter, Collier Reid Director of Curatorial, Education, and Museum Services at the Center of the West, spoke about not one, but two new exhibits that are opening on May 20th. "The Tony Foster Watercolor Diaries from the Green River" features world-renowned artist Tony Foster who has traveled the world to capture in watercolors the most remote places on the planet. He fell in love with the West and particularly the Green River with its vast landscapes years ago and has been a frequent visitor to the Cowboy State although he lives in Cornwall, England. The Alfred Jacob Miller exhibit, entitled, "Revisiting the Rendezvous in Scotland and Today is about an artist who captured the fur trade back in its infancy in the American West. Both exhibits are described by Karen as "immersive" with artifacts from the era and the people who lived back in the 19th Century.

Cody resident Piper Fennimore has written a new cookbook entitled, "Seriously Delish" and spoke about why it's a book that has recipes that are all gluten free, her background from culinary school to working at the Ritz Carlton. She also spoke on how to get picky eaters to sample new foods and expand their palettes as well as her new cooking obsession.

Joy Hill, Park County Planning and Zoning Director and Dossie Overfield, Park County Commissioner, spoke about what phase the Land Use Plan is in. Currently, residents of Park County can review the adoption phase of the Land Use Plan and comment on things like land use, ag, water and easement rights as well as wildlife concerns. They also spoke on what have people been saying about the report on the Land Use Plan and how the consultant, Clarion Associates, has been instrumental in putting this phase of the LUP together. The next public meeting will be May 24th at 11AM in the basement of the Park County Courthouse.

Rebekah Burns, Executive Director of the Powell Economic Partnership, and Kiran Darai, Outdoor Recreation Planner and Americorp Vista member, spoke about the outdoor initiatives that PEP is working on. Kiran talked about what his research says about what people want in Powell as well as Park County as far as outdoor recreation opportunities. Rebekah spoke about the Bike to Work and Bike to School Program that encourages people to get outside and ride their bicycles. This will culminate in the John Wesley Powell Days celebration on May 27th at the drive-in in Powell.

People are encourage to meet at Montauk Park at 7AM in Cody and then will spread out to other parks and areas to help beautify. Gabrielle Saveri, who is a photographer and artist from Napa Valley, California, has a current exhibit at the Center of West Museum. The exhibit is entitled, Italy's Legendary Cowboys of the Maremma, will be on display until August 6th. Gabrielle spoke about her life's journey to bring her to the place where she could take photographs of the cowboys of Italy, why she was drawn to the subject and how it's influenced her life. "Julie", not her real name is a Park County resident who was pregnant at a young age and had a difficult pregnancy. Her doctor said there wasn't anything they could do to help her, but they gave a her the number to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. From the first call, Julie felt like there was someone who cared and could help. Although their mission may be over in the military, they must find a new one and Downrange Warriors tries to help veterans find purpose and meaning in their civilian life. They also spoke about how important it is for veterans to not poison their well, and take steps to make their well clean again.

Cody Beers, WyDOT Public Relations Specialist, spoke about upcoming projects in and around the Cody area since the weather is getting nicer. One project is a bridge rehab near the jail on the Chief Joseph highway. That project is expected to take 3 months and there will be traffic delays over the bridge during that time.

Sexual assault doesn't just happen to women, but men as well and it doesn't discriminate by race, class, gender or socio-economic factors. Doug McMillan, CEO of Cody Regional Health, spoke about his long tenure at CRH, how health care has changed over the years as well as the new clinic that CRH just opened in Basin. Doug also spoke about a new initiative from CRH which is First Flight Wyoming (an air transport service) which will serve the entire basin and be centrally located in Greybull.

Vernon Orndorff, Park County No. 6 Superintendent of Public Instruction, spoke about what happened last week with Cody schools. There was a "swatting" incident as well as a lockdown incident. Both were quickly determined to be not credible threats. The Superintendent spoke about what it's like to be an educator in charge of the security of thousands of Park County children, how supportive parents and teachers have been as well as improvements that can be made in the system to respond to threats of violence at our schools. Because the Superintendent could only stay a half hour, we also heard from Dan Frederick who started Sleep In Heavenly Peace, an organization that makes beds for children here in the Big Horn Basin.

James Klessens, CEO of Forward Cody, spoke about what challenges lie ahead as Cody and Park County gear up for another tourist season. He spoke about the housing problem that exists in Cody and how crunching the data isn't enough, action needs to be taken if Cody wants to solve the labor shortage problem that is currently going on. They said that the stats are going up on the number of individuals and families who are being served in our area. They are in need of monetary as well as food donations to help serve needy families. Downrange Warriors, a group of vets and first responders who help others with trauma and PTS from serving their country or community, spoke about how important forgiveness is in the healing process. Forgiveness of others and yourself is a key element in recovering from trauma that happened a year or 50 years ago. They also talked about Governor Mark Gordon will be at CMA church to welcome and say thank you to veterans who served on Saturday. They are also offering a new course that is designed for first responders that will start in September.

Ryan Brown, founder of Celebrities for a Cause, spoke about this year's event which will have over 30 sports celebrities from June 28th thru July 1st. There are a number of events scheduled like a screening of the movie Vision Quest, a golf tournament, awards banquet, and free concert. Wisa Uemura and Franco Imperial from the San Jose Taiko, along with Michael Gould, shakuhachi master spoke about their appearance at Northwest College on Saturday night, March 18th at the Nelson Performing Arts Center. The program is called "Rhythm and Flow: A Community Performance of Taiko and Shakuhachi." They discussed the drum and the Japanese flute and how they perform together, the cultural significance of both instruments as well as how the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation has such a strong connection to the artists.

Bruce Salzman and Tim Barry, both from First Hunt Foundation and Wyoming Outdoorsmen, spoke about the programs that First Hunt Foundation offers. They offer turkey, doe, pheasant hunting as well as fly fishing for people that never learned how to hunt. Some people who are taking advantage of the programs are middle-aged women and kids. The percentage of hunters has almost dropped in half in recent years from 10 percent of the population to around 5-6 percent. First Hunt Foundation wants to change those numbers by offering mentorship and knowledge on how to hunt and fish.

Aaron Buck, Director of the Yellowstone Regional Airport, spoke about a number of projects going on at the airport. The building expansion project is just a tad bit behind schedule, but it's still in budget and should be completed by August, Fliers will notice a roomier TSA experience and the airport will be able to house equipment that won't be exposed to the weather. Also, the Approach Lighting Project is almost completed, they're just waiting for the FAA to sign off on it and it will be operating hopefully in the next couple of weeks. Aly Martin is a middle schooler who has written and published a book entitled, "Thea" which can be purchased at Legends Bookstore in Cody or from Amazon. Aly wrote "Thea" at 11 and is currently writing around 20 other books in some form. She hopes to publish a couple more of her stories in 2023. Robin Martin is Aly's mom and editor. Mom works as a paralegal and says Aly's talent began to surface at an early age, but she never expected her daughter to write a book at the age of 11.

Rulon Gardner is one of the most iconic athletes to come from the Cowboy State, growing up on a dairy farm in Afton. After being out of wrestling for many years, he is training to go back to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France. A 1989 Star Valley graduate, Gardner defeated Aleksandr Karelin, nicknamed "The Russian Bear", who was considered one of the best Greco-Roman wrestlers in the world. Gardner's win over Karelin cemented his place in all of Olympic history. Rulon would go on to win the gold medal in wrestling at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia in 2000.

Corri Siggins and Jody Oliver, from the Women Empowerment Campaign, spoke about how the non-profit's mission is to embolden and empower women and keep the community safe using knowledge as their greatest weapon. Larry French and Larry Dodge, citizens of Park County, have come up with a food preparedness plan for Park County. They estimate that the project would cost about 663 thousand dollars and would store bushels of corn, wheat, oats and beans. That comes to about 15 hundred tons of food for the 30 thousand people in Park County if the need should arise. So far, they've approached the county commissioners and the Department of Homeland Security for Park County about their idea.

In 2008, Carrie underwent back surgery and was on opioids for 12 years, with no relief. She tried medical cannabis in Colorado and noticed her symptoms subsided instantly. Brian Schroeder, the Superintendent of Wyoming Schools, was on SYP talking about the USDA wanting new guidelines for states to follow if they want Fed money for lunch programs. Superintendent Schroeder said that 25 states have resisted and if they need to and the AG sees fit, they will sue the Federal Government over the mandate. He also said that Wyoming has enough money in its coffers to cover the costs of the food program for students.

The airport is moving forward on a 10,000 square foot expansion on the east end of the airport. State Representative Rachel Rodriguez-Williams, from District 50, stopped by SYP and talked about the last legislative session and one of her bills that was signed into law by Governor Gordon. HB 92 is a Pro-Life bill that is also a "trigger bill" if the SCOTUS overturns Roe v. Wade.
