Ever feel like life is taking longer than it used to? You’re not imagining it. In this episode, Mark Ostach introduces two new terms — “Life Lagging” and “Digital Pulse” — to describe the hidden costs of distraction in our always-on world. From red lights to PB&Js, Mark paints relatable (and hilarious) pictures of how our digital habits create micro-delays that ripple through our day, our relationships, and even our health.

Blending storytelling, neuroscience, and a touch of humor, Mark invites you to pause, breathe, and reflect on how technology might be speeding up your digital pulse while slowing down your actual life. You’ll leave this episode with a renewed awareness of your own rhythms — and practical ways to reclaim presence, focus, and purpose in a hyper-connected world.

Takeaways:

  • Discover what “life lagging” means — and how it’s silently stealing your time and energy.
  • Learn how to reset your “digital pulse” before burnout sets in.
  • Find small, powerful ways to re-sync with the real world and the people right in front of you.

In this episode, we explore generative dialogue—the art of asking questions that move past small talk to create energy, insight, and trust. Instead of “What do you do for work?”, questions like “How do you spend your time?” or “What are you most proud of in the last 30 days?” open doors to meaningful stories and connections. Through examples from leadership, training sessions, and even airplane conversations, we see how intentional dialogue can transform relationships, build vulnerability, and spark authentic human connection.

What happens when you follow a nudge instead of your dinner reservation? In this episode, I share a powerful story about an elevator ride that led me not to a meal—but to a front-row seat at a national bishop conference. Through the lens of social science, spiritual surprise, and human connection, we’ll explore how curiosity isn’t just a trait—it’s a doorway. A simple question, a glance, a moment of presence can change everything. This story is a heartfelt reminder that some of life’s greatest connections begin with just one open door.

In today's episode, I share the story of an unlikely friendship that began with a simple request on a street corner in downtown Detroit.

When I first met Lester, he asked for a few bucks—for cigarettes, baklava, and hot chocolate. What started as a small exchange grew into a connection that changed my life. Over time, Lester taught me that the greatest gifts we give aren’t things—they're time, presence, and dignity.

This episode is about slowing down, seeing the people we often pass by, and remembering that connection isn’t complicated—it starts with a smile, a conversation, and a willingness to notice.

I hope this story reminds you that sometimes the people carrying the richest stories are the ones we almost overlook.

What happens when a stranger on a plane becomes a messenger of hope?

In this episode, I share a powerful conversation with John, a fellow passenger I met on a flight home from Mississippi. From stories of unexpected provision to the faith-filled prayer of a child in a duck blind, this episode is packed with the kind of storytelling that reminds us: we’re never as alone as we think we are.

Whether you’re in a season of doubt, transition, or simply trying to stay afloat—John’s stories (and the timing of them) just might be the reminder you need. Because sometimes, the hope we’re searching for shows up at 30,000 feet.

Takeaways:

  • Provision often shows up through people—especially when we least expect it.
  • There’s power in childlike faith (and Pop-Tarts).
  • Be interruptible—someone’s story might be the answer to your prayer.

In Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke explores how our relentless pursuit of pleasure is rewiring the brain and fueling a rise in addiction, anxiety, and distraction. She explains how modern life—filled with smartphones, streaming, and social media—has tipped our internal balance, making it harder to experience real joy and connection. In this episode, we unpack the science of dopamine, the power of delayed gratification, and how embracing discomfort can lead us to deeper purpose and lasting peace.

This interview sparked my interest in this book and podcast episode.

When an elderly couple in their mid-80s missed their flight due to bad weather, they also missed the opportunity to accept an award and share their heartfelt message with a large audience. But in a quiet moment at the airport, our paths crossed, and they shared their reflections with me instead—what it truly means to be a man of God. Their words, filled with wisdom and grace, reminded me that sometimes the most profound messages aren’t meant for the masses but for the one who is meant to receive them. This was a divine appointment, and I can’t wait to share their message with you.

Ten years ago, I set out to write my first book. After completing the manuscript, I handed it to an editor whose constructive criticism sent me spiralling into a year-long bout of writer's block. When I finally crawled out of that dark space and rediscovered the joy of writing, I made a new commitment to myself: I would write a story once a month and send it as a newsletter. This shift took the pressure off writing a book and instead allowed me to write when I felt inspired.

After six months of sending out monthly stories, I had 500 subscribers from the events I spoke at across the Detroit region. My audience included friends, family, work colleagues, and a few influential figures—among them, Detroit billionaire Dan Gilbert. I was building momentum as a writer and felt good about my new habit.

Listen in how I took a moment of rejection to a place or growth and be inspired on how you can do the same thing.

What I’ve learned is that it’s human nature to let our loved ones know that we are safe, alive, and back seemingly “in control” on the ground. However, I’m beginning to realize that we never really 'land safely' in life -- from the time we come out of the womb to the time we take our final breath, we go through seasons, situations, and circumstances that are filled with exciting take-offs, scary touchdowns, and a whole lot of unexpected turbulence. In this episode, Mark will explore what it means to "Land Safely."

Most of our day is filled with communication. Not conversation.

Communication is about events.

Conversations are about people.

Communication provides instructions.

Conversations provokes vision.

Communication creates buzzing notifications.

Conversations create compassion and reflection.

Communication adds to your TODO list.

Conversations make you forget about your TODO lists.

Enjoy this episode where Mark discusses the Power of Conversations.

Let me introduce you to Susan Wilkie, better known as Mrs.Wilkie.  There’s nobody quite like her. She has been a kindergarten teacher for over 35 years!

According to my rough calculations:
She’s taught over 700 students
Engaged with over 1,400 parents & grandparents
Dealt with thousands of teary eyed situations
Celebrated hundreds of students losing the infamous 'first tooth'
Ventured to over 105 field trips
And breathed life into so many children for over 6,300 days!

This was her final year of teaching and this podcast is a tribute to her.

May this remind you of your most favorite teacher and the wisdom and insight that you've gained from them.

This holiday break my family and I watched a ton of movies, including ‘A Dog’s Purpose’. At the end of the movie, Bailey, the main dog shared the following 5 life lessons:

  1. Have fun when possible.
  2. Find someone to save and save them.
  3. Lick the ones you love.
  4. Don’t get all sad faced about what happened or upset of what could have happened.
  5. Just be here now.

This movie and these lessons got me thinking about the life lessons I’ve learned from our dog, Jones, who unfortunately passed away over the holiday break. Enjoy these lessons and a little reflection question for you after each one.

Most people use their alarm clock as their phone. This creates the immediate reaction to begin doom scrolling before you’ve even gotten out of bed. Finding space for 10 mins of analog time before you start your digital day can impact your intent, modify your mood, and transform your trajectory for the day.

It’s pretty straightforward: You reflect what you receive. That’s it. The things you think about, talk about, and tend to obsess about, are the things you reflect. And the people you come into contact with each day receive those things. Like a sponge ringing out water, your life rings out the water that you've previously soaked up. When we soak up thoughts from the fountain of our future fears, we clamp a stronghold on the water that is intended to fuel our present state of life.  Unfortunately, the more we focus on the things we don't want, the more fuel we give them leading to those things pouring out of us and onto people around us.  This can hinder our ability to relate to one another, differences in all. If you want to change the way you relate to your family, co-workers, neighbors, or friends, the imitation principle may be a concept worth exploring more.
