Welcome to Sagebrushers, the podcast of the University of Nevada, Reno. Brian Sandoval, proud graduate and president of the University of Nevada, Reno, is your host. Each month at Sagebrushers, which by the way was our university's first nickname, we take a closer look at the people, history and future of our beloved University. We explain why the University, ever since its founding in Elko in 1874, has been about so much more than ourselves, why we remain Nevada's best experiment in understanding who we are and what we are capable of achieving.
In this episode of Sagebrushers, University of Nevada, Reno, President Brian Sandoval speaks with Dr. Charlie Yingling, dean of the Orvis School of Nursing, and Dr. Shannon Richard, associate dean for undergraduate studies. Yingling and Richard provide insight into the strategies the Orvis School of Nursing is using to address Nevada’s nursing shortage and prepare students to serve rural communities.
A first-generation college graduate, Yingling earned his Bachelor of Science in nursing at Loyola University Chicago, followed by a master’s degree as a family nurse practitioner and a Doctor of Nursing Practice at the University of Illinois Chicago. Richard earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing and Master of Science in nursing from the University of Nevada, Reno and her doctorate in nursing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Both have extensive experience in nursing education and workforce development.
Sandoval, Yingling and Richard explore the unique challenges of Nevada’s nursing shortage, the expansion of the nursing program at the University’s Lake Tahoe location, accelerated pathways for second-career nurses, and initiatives that support student success, clinical readiness and community engagement.
In this episode, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval and Pearson explore how tobacco companies target vulnerable populations, the ongoing challenges in regulating tobacco and cannabis products in the US and how her research informs public policy aimed at improving health outcomes.

University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval speaks with Director of Dual Credit Initiatives Joe Nannini. Nannini provides leadership and support to all stakeholders connected to the University's dual-credit efforts, including the University of Nevada, Reno Collegiate Academy.
Nannini is a proud University alumnus. His experience in K-12 education as a teacher and a school administrator, combined with his work teaching and leading clinical experiences for the College of Education and Human Development, gives him a unique perspective on both the K-12 and higher education sides of the dual-credit equation.
During the episode, Sandoval and Nannini discuss how high school students in Nevada can take college-level classes through the Collegiate Academy program. They also explore the rigor of the courses, the support high school teachers receive from the University while teaching and the ways in which the program helps to improve the college-going rate in Nevada.
University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval hosts Associate Professor of Management Dan Jones, Ph.D. Jones’ research primarily focuses on how toxic personality traits predict unethical behavior across different environments, and he has spent years developing the construct of emophilia, the dispositional tendency to fall in love easily and often.
During the episode, Sandoval and Jones discuss the value of teaching social and personality psychology to business students and what the dark triad of personality traits consists of. They also explore Jones’ 2024 TEDx Reno Talk, “How to recognize a master manipulator.” In addition, the conversation covers Jones’ research on emophilia and how emophiliacs navigate relationships, break-ups, online dating and more.
In this episode of Sagebrushers, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval speaks with Dr. Geoffrey Blewitt. Blewitt is one of the lead scientists credited with making GPS accurate within a millimeter, resulting in discoveries related to the earth’s shape, dark matter tsunamis, mega earthquakes and more.
Blewitt earned his Ph.D. in physics from Caltech (California Institute of Technology) then joined the faculty of the University of Newcastle in the U.K., becoming a professor of space geodesy in 1994. He joined the University of Nevada, Reno in the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology in 1999, becoming a professor of geosciences.
During the episode, Sandoval and Blewitt discuss the science of geodesy as well as the many ways in which GPS benefits humans’ daily lives. They also chat about Blewitt’s research with atomic clocks and dark matter and explore what Blewitt’s recent election to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors a scientist can receive, means to him.
In this episode of Sagebrushers, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval hosts Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police Eric James. The University Police Department-Northern Command serves the University by leading an extraordinary group of police officers, support staff and partnerships.
James started as a police officer at the University in 2003 after serving in the United States Marines Corps for 12 years. His work focuses on supporting workplace safety, sexual assault prevention, education about the dangers of underage drinking, self-defense training and more. As chief of police, James empowers his officers to support the Wolf Pack through proactive community involvement and protection.
During the episode, Sandoval discusses with James what the department does, how it serves the campus, including innovative safety measures, and how it partners with other campus units, such as the School of Medicine and School of Social Work, to provide educational opportunities to students.
In this episode of Sagebrushers, University President Brian Sandoval chats with Vice Provost of Online Learning Carley Ries about the newly launched Nevada Online. The office focuses on providing fully online undergraduate degrees, certificates and graduate degrees.
Sandoval and Ries discuss recently added programs, including bachelor’s degrees in interdisciplinary studies, communications and sociology. They also explore the new partnership with Guild Education and plans for the office to expand offerings for adult learners around the country.
University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval hosts Angie Lenard, Ph.D., and Satish Manandhar, Ph.D., two postdoctoral scholars contributing to impactful research on campus. Around 70 postdoctoral scholars work at the University, playing a valuable role in advancing the research and teaching on campus.
Lenard and Manandhar help to lead the University’s Postdoctoral Association (UNR PA), an organization that was formed in 2021 by volunteer postdocs to represent postdocs across campus. The organization offers professional development opportunities, social events and other community building for any postdoctoral scholar at the University.
During the episode, Sandoval discusses with Lenard and Manandhar what a postdoc is, why someone would choose to pursue this path after receiving their doctorate and how UNR PA is working to connect with postdocs around campus. They also explore both scholars’ research – Lenard is monitoring chemicals on national wildlife refuges near California agriculture lands and Manandhar is running experiments on one of the largest shake tables in the country to determine how to better build structures atop soil.

Prior to joining the Nevada Football program in December 2023, Choate was co-defensive coordinator for the Texas Longhorns, the head coach for the Montana State Bobcats, and the running back and linebacker coach for the Boise State Broncos. He was also a former linebacker for the Montana Western Bulldogs. University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval speaks with Jessica Keefhaver, the director of the Path to Independence Program within the College of Education and Human Development. The program, known as P2I, is an inclusive, two-year, non-degree certificate program offering a college experience to students with intellectual disabilities through the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities. The program currently accepts eight to 10 students into each cohort.
During the episode, Sandoval and Keefhaver discuss Keefhaver’s background as an educator working for Washoe County School District for 17 years. They also explore how the P2I program supports its students, assisting with course selection, offering social activities and providing housing options. University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval visits with Senior Editor for News & Features John Trent. Trent is a two-time graduate of the
Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism, earning his bachelor's degree in 1987 and his master's degree in 2000. He has a long history of telling the University’s stories and of writing award-winning articles and high-profile speeches in Northern Nevada. Trent is currently under contract with the University of Nevada Press for a 150-year history book of the University, which is scheduled for release sometime in 2024.
During the episode, Sandoval and Trent discuss Trent’s personal history and ties to Northern Nevada and the University where his father was a faculty member starting in 1967. From meeting his wife while they both worked for the student newspaper to some of the discoveries he has made through his research for the 150th book, particularly about the University’s early faculty including Hannah Clapp, Leroy Brown and Fred Hillman, Trent shares a wealth of information about how this campus has transformed many lives, including his own.
During Native American Heritage Month, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval visits with Director of Indigenous Relations Daphne Emm - Hooper. Emm - Hooper has dedicated her career to public service, most recently serving as the city manager for the City of Fernley and previously holding the role of executive director for Nevada Urban Indians. She is also the co-founder of the Nevada Tribal Leadership Development program at the University.
During the episode, Sandoval and Emm - Hooper talk about the Office of Indigenous Relations’ efforts to support University compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, returning ancestorial remains and Native American items to their communities. They discuss the new benefits offered by the Native American fee waiver after Nevada legislation was passed during the 2023 session and the role of the land acknowledgment on campus. Emm - Hooper also shares how her team supports the 28 Indigenous communities around the state and the role of higher education in her career and life.
University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval visits with the School of Social Work Interim Dean Lillian Wichinsky and Associate Dean Eugenia Weiss. In addition to her leadership role, Dr. Wichinsky is an associate professor and a community practice social worker. Dr. Weiss is also an associate professor, whose research interests include promoting well-being for vulnerable populations such as Latinx, women and military and veteran populations.

Prim Campus. Parsons, who also serves as the director of the Summer Arts Workshops, is a sculptor whose work has been showcased around the country.
During the episode, Sandoval and Parsons talk about the Holman Arts & Media Center, a recently remodeled space that allows students and faculty to work on projects in a variety of mediums including pottery, sculpture and 3D printing. Hauptman is a nationally recognized researcher of advanced heart failure, cardiac care delivery and clinical trials.
During the episode, Sandoval and Hauptman explore Hauptman’s medical background working with underserved populations and pioneering new clinical protocols. They also discuss the impacts of the new affiliation agreement between UNR Med and Renown Health, the importance of graduate medical education and other plans that Hauptman has for the school. In this episode of Sagebrushers, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval meets with and Dr. Sarah Bisbing, director of the Whittell Forest and Wildlife Area and an associate professor of forest ecosystem science in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources. The Whittell Forest is a 2,650-acre property owned by the University that serves as a living laboratory of forested mountain land in a primitive state for research and instruction.
During the episode, Sandoval and Bisbing explore Bisbing’s journey to the University, her research related to forest persistence potential (ensuring that there are forests in the future), and her role as director of the University’s forest. They also discuss what the biggest threats facing forests are, what it means to work in a living laboratory and what makes the Whittell Forest unique. In this episode of Sagebrushers, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval meets with Dr. Jake DeDecker, director of the University of Nevada, Reno Extension and associate dean for engagement in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources. DeDecker, who began his role with Extension in the summer of 2022, previously worked with Extension at Michigan State University.
During the episode, Sandoval and DeDecker explore DeDecker’s background growing up on a pig farm in Illinois as well as their shared experience of participating in the 4-H program as children. DeDecker also talks about the broad-reaching impact of Extension, which is located in all 16 Nevada counties and Carson City, and the unique roles it plays in each community. In addition, they discuss the evolution of Extension from its agriculture and mechanical arts roots to the community education and economic development program that exists today.

A professor of geography, Heaton served as Sierra Nevada University’s (SNU) executive vice president and provost during the acquisition year of the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe location from 2021 to 2022.

The Sanford Center, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, enhances the quality of life and well-being among Nevada's elders through research, education and community outreach.
During the episode, Sandoval and Reed discuss the programs and services offered by the center, the center’s efforts to provide support for elders around the state and important insights regarding the aging process. They also highlight the legacy of Graham and Jean Sanford, who founded the center in 1993, and the center’s plans to honor its 30th anniversary this year.
In this episode, University President and host Brian Sandoval interviews Cary Groth, the director of the Sports Management programs within the College of Business. Groth is a highly accomplished athletics administrator with over 40 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics and the founder of the PICTOR Group.
During the episode, Sandoval and Groth explore the evolution of the Sports Management programs, which include a sports management minor at the undergraduate level and an executive certificate at the graduate level. Groth also discusses the role of the Sports Management Executive Board, with industry leaders from every intercollegiate and professional sports organization within the state of Nevada and national sports leaders in intercollegiate and professional sports.

In this episode of Sagebrushers, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval hosts the dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Erick Jones. Jones was most recently a senior science advisor in the Office of the Chief Economist at the U.S. State Department prior to joining the University in September of 2022. Sandoval and Jones discuss Jones’s background working with supply chains as an industrial engineer, his first nine months as dean and the partnerships the College of Engineering has made with corporations and government agencies. They also discuss the lithium initiative and the ways in which the College of Engineering and other schools and colleges on campus are giving students hands-on learning opportunities that they cannot receive anywhere else in the world.
President Brian Sandoval takes listeners around the globe during his conversation with Dr. Sudeep Chandra, a professor of limnology, and Dr. Zeb Hogan, a research associate professor of biology. As friends and colleagues for 20-plus years, Chandra and Hogan have worked together to protect bodies of water and fish species in places such as Mongolia, Cambodia, Russia and Lake Tahoe.
This extended episode looks at Hogan and Chandra’s work with the Wonders of the Mekong Project, an international collaboration based out of the University’s Global Water Center to research, educate and advise on water and biodiversity issues in the Mekong River basin in Cambodia. Sandoval, Chandra and Hogan also recount the January 2023 visit to Cambodia by Sandoval and other University faculty to build connections between the University and the Cambodian government, the benefits of the new University of Nevada, Reno Lake Tahoe location for research and policy development, and the popular National Geographic television show “Monster Fish,” with an in-person exhibit now open at The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum.
In this episode of Sagebrushers, President Brian Sandoval hosts GAIN Scholar Jess Buelow. The GAIN Scholars program, which stands for Graduate Acceleration through Innovation and Networking Scholars program, is funded by the National Science Foundation. The program, overseen by the University’s Graduate School, works to increase the retention and success of first-generation and historically underrepresented groups within graduate programs.
During the episode, Sandoval and Buelow, a second-year Ph.D. student studying ecology, evolution and conservation biology at the University, discuss the impact and benefits of the GAIN Scholars program as well as the challenges faced by someone who is the first in their family to attend graduate school. Buelow also shares her current research projects related to bumble bee behavior, cognition, and nutrition and debunks a common myth about local honey being a cure for allergies.
In this episode of Sagebrushers, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval hosts the dean of the Honors College, Matt Means, for a discussion of his two-plus years in leadership and the college’s ongoing efforts to make honors education attainable for more students. “Sagebrushers” season 2 kicks off with an important conversation about neurodiversity in honor of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, celebrated March 13 through March 17. During this first episode of the season, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval hosts University Neurodiversity Alliance member Dr. Jeffrey Hustler, an associate professor in the Psychology and Neuroscience departments. Sandoval and Hutsler explore the meaning of the term neurodiversity, the role the alliance plays on campus and ways faculty can support neurodivergent students in their classes. Hutsler also discusses ableism, common barriers that neurodivergent people face and his research working with individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.
