In the final message for 2021, College President Dr Sam Murton provides an update of what she's been up to and who she's been meeting over the past week, and takes the opportunity to acknowledge our GP and rural hospital workforce who have done an amazing job over what has been another challenging year.
The Consult will be back again in 2022 with more updates from the President as well as interviews with our members on topical workforce related issues.
The fourth webinar in the series focused on one of the major areas of concern for GPs and rural hospital doctors right around the country – funding. This was already an issue in pre-COVID times, but as our panellists highlighted, COVID-19 has shone a bright light onto the health system and exposed the cracks – including funding for GPs and their practices working on the frontline of the pandemic.
Our panellists Dr Jeff Lowe, Dr Karl Cole, and Dr Fiona Bolden brought different perspectives and experiences to the webinar and had a wide range of insights in response to the questions that were asked. It quickly became clear that everyone around the country is facing the same issues.

The third webinar in the series delved into the tools and technologies that have been useful for health professionals and the public as we navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic.
We were fortunate to have as panellists, Dr Janine Bycroft, Executive Director of Health Navigator, Dr Lara Hopley, Clinical Director of Digital Innovations at Waitemata DHB, and GP Dr Sandhya Ramanathan, whose successful YouTube video on treating mild COIVD-19 at home has been viewed over 500,000 times and has helped millions of people who have had COVID-19.

In the second of the College's COVID-19 webinar series on 17 November we focused on patient care and equity. Panellists Dr Rawiri McKree Jansen and Dr Aniva Lawrence discussed how to care for people who aren't engaged with health services, Māori or Pasifika whānau or high-risk groups.
The takeaway message from this webinar was that GPs have a duty of care and a responsibility to provide medical care, so let's keep talking.

The first of the College's COVID-19 webinar series on 10 November brought together health practitioners from Norway, Singapore and Ireland who shared their knowledge and experiences about how these similar-sized and populated countries have managed COVID-19 in their communities.
New Zealand is now in the greatest period of COVID-19 transition since March 2020. The difference this time around is that the pandemic is no longer new and novel, the workforce is short on energy and there is still a lot to be done. But hearing these experiences of what has and hasn't worked and what challenges we may be yet to come up against was incredibly useful for our members.
