After building The Way of the Horse since 2015 and rebuilding her business multiple times — including starting over completely after moving to Lincolnshire — Dina shares the honest reality of what it takes to create a sustainable equestrian business.
Using a surprisingly powerful comparison between selling bread in a small honesty-box pantry and selling equine therapy services, Dina explains why passion alone isn’t enough. Your audience needs to understand:
This episode is packed with practical advice for horse business owners, equine facilitators, coaches, and anyone trying to grow a purpose-led business around horses.
In This Episode:* Why most horse businesses struggle in the beginning * The importance of clear messaging and marketing * How to identify your ideal client * Why consistency matters more than perfection * How to refine your offer instead of constantly starting over * The “bread analogy” that completely changed Dina’s approach to business * Why equestrian businesses are a slow burn — but worth it
Key Takeaway:People won’t buy what they don’t understand.
Your job is not just to offer something amazing — it’s to clearly communicate the transformation you provide.
Mentioned in This Episode:* The Way of the Horse * Dina’s Accelerator Clients * Upcoming Free Training – 17th May
If you’re building an equestrian business and feeling discouraged, this episode will remind you why persistence, clarity, and connection matter more than quick wins.
Until next time…
Keep walking towards what’s calling you.
It’s 7am.
You’re in the yard.
The horses are impatient.
Your phone is buzzing.
And your to-do list is already out of control.
Sound familiar?
In this episode of Taking Back the Reins, Dina is joined by Parvez to talk about one of the biggest traps equestrian entrepreneurs fall into: confusing being busy with making real progress.
Because let’s be honest — the to-do list feels productive. Ticking things off gives you momentum. But often, it’s filled with small, comfortable tasks that keep you moving… while the actions that truly grow your business quietly get pushed aside.
This conversation is a practical, honest look at how to protect your passion from burnout — and how to focus on the work that actually moves the needle.
In this episode, you’ll learn:1. Why your to-do list might be sabotaging your growth 2. The difference between motion and meaningful progress 3. How the 80/20 rule applies to equestrian businesses 4. Why “perfecting” small details can delay real results 5. The one question you should ask yourself every morning 6. How to identify the single priority that impacts income or peace of mind 7. A simple 5-minute daily reset to reduce overwhelm 8. Why momentum comes from focused action — not endless busyness
Parvez shares practical business insights alongside relatable examples from yard life, lessons, admin overload, and the constant juggle equestrian entrepreneurs face.
If you’ve ever:
This episode will help you reset.
Your TakeawayBefore you finish listening, ask yourself:
What is the ONE thing this week that would make the biggest difference to my income or peace of mind?
Then block 90 minutes and protect it.
Small, deliberate, focused action — repeated consistently — will always outperform scattered busywork.
You’re not behind.
You’re not failing.
You just need clarity.
And that starts with one priority at a time.
Building an equestrian business isn’t about overnight success, shiny Instagram launches, or chasing every opportunity that comes your way. It’s about doing the work slowly, intentionally, and sustainably—with the horses at the heart of it all.
In this episode of Taking Back the Reins, Dina Shale shares the real, behind-the-scenes lessons she’s learned over 15 years of building an equine-facilitated learning business and charitable organisation. No funnels, no hype—just honest reflections, hard-earned wisdom, and practical guidance for equestrian entrepreneurs who want longevity, not burnout.
Dina walks you through three things she stopped doing that were holding her business back, and three things she would absolutely do again if she were starting from scratch.
In this episode, we explore:1. Why chasing one-off work and random enquiries isn’t sustainable 2. The importance of relationships over scattered bookings 3. How underpricing leads to exhaustion, resentment, and burnout 4. Charging in a way that reflects your training, experience, land, horses, and emotional labour 5. Why having clear processes and procedures is non-negotiable 6. Letting go of trying to help everyone and focusing on your ideal client 7. Building a business model based on aligned, repeat work (not hustle) 8. Growing slowly and methodically—and why that’s a strength, not a weakness 9. Starting an email list early and building a relationship with your audience 10. Why working with someone who truly understands the equestrian niche matters 11. Finding your voice, refining your message, and speaking clearly about what you actually offer
This episode is for equestrian entrepreneurs, facilitators, and dreamers who want to build something meaningful—without losing themselves in the process.
✨ If you’re ready to stop guessing, start structuring, and build a business that supports you as much as it supports others, this one’s for you.

This episode is especially for equestrian entrepreneurs who lead with heart, passion, and purpose, but sometimes find themselves stuck in fear, overthinking, or self-doubt.
In this episode, you’ll learn:1. Why mindset matters more than strategy in the early and growing stages of business 2. How fear, procrastination, and “I’m not good enough” loops show up for purpose-led founders 3. The difference between making decisions from fear vs intuition 4. This isn’t about toxic positivity.
It’s about awareness, consistency, and choosing how you show up—every single day.
If you’re building an equestrian business and want it to be sustainable, aligned, and resilient, this episode will help you reset your focus and reconnect with your “why.”
🎧 Listen now and start building your business from the inside out.
Good intentions start charities — but they don’t sustain them.
In this episode of Taking Back the Reins, Dina Shale continues the conversation on the deeper, often unspoken challenges that stop charities and not-for-profits from growing, thriving, and becoming sustainable long-term.
Together with Parvez, Dina explores why passion alone can lead organisations into difficulty, and how clarity, commercial discipline, and mindset are essential — even in purpose-led work.
In this episode, we explore:
The “If we build it, they will come” fallacy — and why community needs must come before new projects
Why charities need commercial thinking, not just goodwill
The danger of “all tears, no hope” storytelling — and how it leads to donor fatigue
How to engage supporters through solutions, skills, and shared ownership, not just funding asks
The risk of the founder becoming the single point of failure
Why leadership mindset directly impacts sustainability, staff wellbeing, and organisational health
This conversation is for charity leaders, founders, and CEOs who feel the weight of responsibility — and are ready to build something that works with them, not only because of them.
☕️ These episodes are designed to feel like a calm, honest conversation over coffee — offering insight, reassurance, and practical reflection for those carrying a lot.
🎧 In upcoming episodes, Dina and Parvez will go deeper into structure, sustainability, and mindset — creating a safe space for leaders to learn, reflect, and grow.
Running a charity or not-for-profit often starts with passion — but passion alone isn’t enough to sustain it.
In this episode of Taking Back the Reins, Dina Shale is joined by Parvez for the first conversation in a new mini-series focused on the most common mistakes charities and not-for-profits make — and how to avoid them.
Drawing on decades of experience across the corporate world and the charity sector, Dina and Parvez explore the real, often unspoken challenges leaders face when they’re carrying responsibility, pressure, and accountability largely on their own.
In this episode, we discuss:
The “Passion Trap” — when founders unintentionally become the bottleneck
Chasing shiny objects on social media instead of clear, intentional communication
The difference between being busy and creating real impact
Why clarity, trust, and simple objectives matter more than complex strategies
This is an honest, grounded conversation designed to feel like sitting down for a cup of tea with someone who truly understands the realities of leading a purpose-driven organisation.
🎧 In the next episode, we’ll continue the conversation and explore sustainability, growth, and mindset in the charity and not-for-profit space.
In this episode of Taking Back the Reins, Dina Shale is joined by Parvez to explore what it truly takes to build sustainable charities, not-for-profits, and purpose-led organisations—especially when passion is high, but support and structure are stretched.
Parvez shares his journey as a first-generation migrant who spent two decades in global investment banking, working across technology, leadership, delivery, and large-scale transformation. Those years shaped how he thinks about execution, failure, governance, and why having the right people in the right room at the right time matters more than good intentions alone.
Together, Dina and Parvez reflect on:
Moving from commercial success into the charity and not-for-profit sector
The hidden pressures faced by CEOs and charity leaders
Why many charities struggle to become sustainable
The tension between trustees, volunteers, and paid leadership
How commercial thinking can strengthen purpose-led work without losing heart
Why leaders often feel isolated—and where they can find real support
This conversation marks the beginning of an ongoing series where Dina and Parvez will share honest discussions, lived experience, and practical insights to support leaders who are carrying a lot and don’t always know where to turn next.
If you’re leading a charity, not-for-profit, or values-driven organisation—and you’re trying to balance vision, governance, and sustainability—this episode is for you.

In this episode of Taking Back the Reins, host Dina Shale explores how emotions serve as vital information—guiding us toward what feels right or wrong, when to act, and when to rest.
Through the lens of trauma-informed equine facilitated learning, Dina explains how horses naturally read emotions as cues for survival and connection—and how we, too, can tune into that same emotional intelligence.
Drawing from her experience as a somatic experiencing practitioner, Dina shares how suppressing emotions disconnects us from our inner wisdom, and how reconnecting with our “felt sense” helps us make aligned, confident decisions.
You’ll also hear a powerful personal story where trusting emotional intuition helped her avoid a life-changing mistake—and how emotions, when understood, can become one of our greatest guides.
Whether you’re healing from trauma, working with horses, or simply learning to listen to your body’s messages, this episode will inspire you to see emotions not as weakness, but as wisdom.

In this episode of Taking Back the Reins, Deena welcomes guest Gordon Forsyth, Chair of PACT (Parents and Autistic Children Together), to explore the realities of raising and supporting neurodivergent children. Drawing from two decades of lived experience as a parent and advocate, Gordon shares openly about the challenges families face, the lessons learned through trial and error, and the power of community in finding a way forward.
Together, Deena and Gordon dive into the importance of recognising behavior as communication, shifting away from punishment toward understanding, and building environments—at home, at school, and in the wider community—where children can truly thrive. Their conversation highlights how traditional approaches like talk therapy or rigid systems often fall short, and how somatic, body-based work with horses can unlock deeper awareness and healing that words alone cannot reach.
This is an episode full of honesty, hope, and practical wisdom for parents, educators, and anyone walking alongside neurodivergent children. After years of study, practice, and perseverance, Dina has completed her three-year journey to become a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner — a milestone that has reshaped both her personal healing and her professional work with horses. In this deeply personal episode, she opens up about the struggles and setbacks along the way, the determination to keep rebuilding, and the profound sense of purpose that continues to guide her work.
Dina explains how somatic awareness — understanding the body’s language of trauma, regulation, and resilience — has changed her life and the lives of her clients. Through inspiring stories, including powerful breakthroughs from clients who could not reach certain traumas through talk therapy alone, she illustrates why body-centered healing is the “missing piece” in mental health and personal growth.
Listeners will come away with hope, encouragement, and a deeper understanding of how trauma is not a life sentence, but an opportunity to build capacity, reclaim strength, and reconnect with the present moment. Whether you’re curious about equine therapy, exploring somatics, or simply seeking inspiration for your own journey, this episode is a heartfelt reminder that healing is always possible — especially when guided by the wisdom of horses.
In this special episode of Taking Back the Reins, Dina welcomes Mel Malcolm, a devoted listener who traveled all the way from New Zealand to connect in person. Mel opens up about her journey — from growing up on a farm, facing life challenges, and experiencing a mental health crisis, to discovering the healing power of horses. Her story is both deeply personal and universally inspiring, showing how equine therapy can help us reconnect with ourselves, release trauma, and rediscover joy.
Together, Dina and Mel explore the magic of working with horses, the importance of somatic healing, and how animals mirror back to us the lessons we most need to learn. Mel also shares her dreams for the future, her passion for wild horses, and her vision of helping others through equine-facilitated learning.
Whether you’re curious about equine therapy, seeking inspiration for your own healing journey, or simply love hearing transformational stories, this episode is a beautiful reminder that growth and recovery are always possible — especially when we let horses guide the way.

Join me on this episode of Taking Back the Reins as I delve into my transformative journey during my second week of training at Somatic International in London. After recovering from foot surgery, I embarked on this immersive experience, discovering profound insights that have reshaped my approach to equine facilitated learning.
I recount my days in London, navigating intensive training sessions with Somatic International, renowned for its structured and professional approach. Reflecting on my connection to horses, particularly a significant equine companion named Harry, I unravel how my experiences with traumatized horses unknowingly introduced me to somatic practices, fostering a deeper understanding of body awareness and healing.
Throughout the training, we dived into the intricate workings of the somatic nervous system, exploring the nuances of fight, flight, freeze, and more. Our charismatic instructor, Gavi, shared wisdom rooted in the teachings of pioneers like Peter Levine and Gabor Maté, enlightening us about our innate abilities to manage trauma responses.
What became evident was my heightened attunement to the body, a skill honed through equine interaction—which allowed me to grasp somatic principles more profoundly than many others in the training. This alignment between somatic practices and equine facilitated learning struck me as a potent tool for guiding individuals through trauma release.
As a graduate of the first year, I've already witnessed the profound impact of applying somatic techniques in my sessions. I've helped individuals experience remarkable releases from their trapped trauma, unlocking a pathway to empowerment and healing.

In this heartfelt episode of Taking Back the Reins, my emotions soar as I reveal the thrilling news—I've finally exchanged on our forever home! Embarking on a journey that traces back to nearly two decades of dreaming, the episode unfolds the saga of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering determination.
I recount a year-long quest, exploring over 30 properties across different corners of the country. The Golden Triangle’s pricey real estate posed formidable hurdles, making it seem nearly impossible to secure a piece of land. Despite encountering setbacks, including complexities with bank loans and the loss of desired properties, our unwavering resolve persisted.
Navigating the intricacies of acquiring a community project house, facing rejection, and wrestling with feelings of not belonging in a community, I share raw, poignant moments. The adversities faced while running my business in a community that initially didn't embrace us serves as a testament to our resilience.
With the exchange now complete, I'm revelling in the joy of having our dream finally materialize. The excitement of owning a piece of land outright, devoid of limitations, ushers in a new era for their business and personal lives.
This journey is just beginning because we have so much work to do on the property and we have huge plans for events, retreats and more at our new forever home for The Way of The Horse.
From recounting the struggles of fitting into a community to the hope for a fresh start in a new neighbourhood, this episode encapsulates the rollercoaster of emotions and experiences encountered on the path to realizing a lifelong dream.
Tune in to witness the power of determination, the resilience needed to overcome obstacles, and the sheer joy of achieving a 21-year-old dream. Join us as we celebrate this triumph, a testament to the mantra: never let go of your dreams.

In this episode, I talk to Ali about how she was the first person to sign up to my CPD Accredited EFL course (Project Pony) last August.
I remember her first conversation saying, I don’t know how I will pay for it but I know I need to do this and with you! Ali also said she thought she couldn’t do this as she didn’t have a paddock or a pony and I said "don’t worry about this now, let the universe sort this out for you. Your job is just to follow your instinct".
In this episode you will learn:
How you can overcome your limiting beliefs
How to feel the magic of EFL
How you don’t have to have a paddock full of ponies to start your dream job
How you don’t have to be a phycologist or a councilor to do this work.
How Dina supports you to learn, embody and integrate the magic of this work
Learning to listen to your instinct is important and never let the fear of not having money stop you doing something amazing !

Fear can be confused with vulnerability and it can feel similar in the body. But we also need to
dig deep and understand how fear can show up in how we behave and how it can affect us
when making decisions. When starting our in business we can feel fear of the procedures we
need to do and the ‘what ifs’.
Listen to this episode and learn how it has affected me but how I now understand that fear can also be my friend.
What You Will Learn:
How we don’t feel in our society we can talk about fear
How vulnerability and fear is similar in the body
What is perceived fear
Fear of loss
Fearing of starting out in business
The fear an entrepreneur will feel at the beginning of their journey into business
This podcast is about you learning to understand fear in a more deep and logical way.
How your body is so cleaver to be able to guide you and help you make sense of what FEAR is trying to communicate to you. Also how fear can stop you from achieving your goals if you don’t fine tune your emotions and instincts .
Fear to animals means one thing though. Fear of being eaten by the saber tooth tiger or bear!
Resources:
We think of vulnerability as being a negative emotion.
We connect it to grief & shame however, it’s the birth place of positivity in our own lives like love, joy empathy and belonging . It’s the birth place of us learning how to be confident and grow from difficult emotions.
What You Will Learn:
We encourage our groups to learn to be vulnerable and we offer a no shaming policy so that
people can learn to grow and be open about how they feel in circle.
Unzipping your metal armor is empowering and helps us grow in times of trust and with good
facilitators who can hold that space of safety.
Resources:
Boundaries is one of the most profound learning experiences animals can help us with. Boundaries teach us how we feel emotional, spiritually and what is comfortable for us.
Once you are able to set healthy boundaries, you are able to learn how to feel safe in your body and become empowered in your decision making.
What You Will Learn:
Once you start learning when someone has stepped over a boundary you learn how to feel
empowered and gain confidence from setting healthy boundaries. Beware though as setting boundaries ripples change in people and they way they see you change in the world!

The main purpose of therapy is to get you out from that box of fear, and give you a head start on how to move forward from your trauma and live your life without fear. Talk therapy requires you to speak about your trauma by reliving it through words, but this method doesn’t work for everyone. In today’s episode, you’ll discover that there are more options besides talk therapy on your road to recovery. What You Will Learn: Why talk therapy is not enough to heal from trauma How to get your mind and body in sync post trauma Why it’s important to move from your past and discover your soul’s purpose How equine therapy helped kickstart my healing process and move my life forward
Talk therapy only addresses the surface, but the actual resolution lies within your being as a whole. If you can’t figure out what triggers your fears, you won’t be able to manifest your soul’s purpose in life. This is why you need to find your inner drive and learn to be present in the moment in order to overcome trauma. When the pandemic started, people lived in constant fear and it took a toll on them. It had a traumatic effect on the minds of people without them realising it or understanding what’s happening in their bodies. In today’s episode, I want to share with you the reasons why being trauma-informed is critical post-pandemic, what to look out for when you spot people dealing with trauma, and the best ways to help them through a trauma-informed lens. What You Will Learn: Why it’s important to be trauma-informed right now How your nerves can reflect and affect other people around you The importance of being mindful and present in the moment Insightful tips on how to become trauma-informed What values are expected of a trauma-informed person
Before you decide to help out someone else dealing with trauma, you have to make sure you’re in tune with your own body, and that your nervous system has been regulated. Focus your attention on learning the things that can help release trauma, do a lot of research and you’ll be in a better position to help those dealing with trauma around you. The universe has its own way of connecting with us and sending us signs and guidance in an attempt to teach us a lesson. This is why it’s important to focus on what we wish to attract, and manifest ourselves in our truest form. In today’s episode, I’ll be sharing with you a story where the universe played its part in the transformational journey of a lottery winner’s son. I’ll be sharing my experience of working with him and how The Way of the Horse has helped him heal and turn his life around for good. What You Will Learn: What you can gain by letting go of your fears and trusting in the way of horses My chance encounter with a man that needed healing and how far we’ve gone in his healing process How an encounter with horses can transform your life forever The importance of communicating clearly to people what it is that you do
The Way of the Horse is to come into your life, help you improve your mental health and teach you how to live with your experience as you move forward. When someone experiences trauma, it’s advisable to seek out professional help. These professionals create a space for you to openly express your thoughts and fears, providing the support you need to feel better. But what happens when all that talk doesn’t really help? In this episode, I’ll be talking about the solution that equine therapy interaction has to offer when other traditional methods can’t. What You Will Learn: The logic behind equine therapeutic interactions and why you should consider it How equine therapy can be more effective than other forms of traditional therapy How you can develop yourself with the skills that equine therapy provides Why children are more responsive with horses than in a talk therapy
For you to handle the effects of a trauma, you need to do more than talking about how it makes you feel. Someone can walk you through your emotions, but it will lack the fix that comes with practicing what you’ve learnt. That’s why interacting with horses can help you learn to become stronger and better at managing whatever life throws at you in future. Childhood trauma is unfortunately as common as it is in adults. If children don’t have the opportunity to heal, they might suffer harmful consequences in the long run. Today’s episode is about understanding the effects of trauma on children, and how being trauma informed through equine facilitated learning can help them kickstart their healing. What You Will Learn: How children recognise and respond to the effects of trauma The impact of our equine facilitated learning programs on children Why parents and teachers need to be trauma informed for a child’s healing The importance of consistency and patience during the healing process
Everyone present in the lives of children has a part to play in their growth and how they react to the things happening around them. This is why it’s important for parents and teachers to be trauma informed and seek personal development, so they can be in a better position to assist in a child’s healing process. If you’re at a stage in your life where you’ve not been in control of your emotions, or how you react in different situations ever since a traumatic experience occurred, that’s the sign that you need to resolve your trauma. In today’s episode, I’ll be showing you just how important it is to dig into your experience and heal. I’ll be sharing my experience of a childhood trauma that I didn’t get through until my adulthood, and how I overcame it by interacting with horses. What You Will Learn In This Episode: My experience dealing with childhood trauma and how it affected my view of life The magical feeling behind horse riding and why you should try it What feedbacks to expect when learning with horses How horses have helped me overcome my childhood trauma
The first step to healing from a traumatic experience is acknowledging that it happened and affirming yourself that you can overcome it. On your path to healing with horses, you begin to understand nature and grow towards the peace that you’ve always wished for. However, this growth doesn’t happen overnight, so remember to be patient with yourself. There isn’t a lot of difference between humans and animals when faced with danger. We both provide a response in whatever traumatic situation we might find ourselves in, but what matters most is how we handle it. In today’s episode, I’ll be talking about how horses use the four trauma responses. I’ll talk about the various ways horses teach us to reconnect with our instincts by understanding trauma, providing a response and managing it. What You Will Learn: Four types of trauma responses and how horses react to danger The survival tactics of horses as prey animals out in the wild What makes horses different from humans when in danger My experience learning and growing with a horse that was exhibiting trauma responses
When a horse goes through trauma, its instincts help in deciding what response to give. This is why it’s important to pay attention when observing how they respond to the things going on in their surroundings. When you put in the effort to build a relationship with horses, only then can you truly learn to deal with trauma in the way they do. Horses have always been a beauty to behold, because of how nature seems to radiate around them. They have a unique way of communicating without words. From their body language and honesty you can tell just how much they feel at that moment. In today’s episode, I’ll be talking about the various ways horses can positively impact people. You’ll find out how they can help you get a sense of meaning and purpose for living while building a healthy relationship with them. What You Will Learn In This Episode: How horses can positively impact our lives as humans What makes relationships with horses different from the ones we have with humans Five top quotes from our Project Pony clients on what horses have to offer My experience of learning to control my energy and emotions while growing with a horse
Unlike humans, horses eliminate that false element when communicating how they feel. You’ll find out that when you’re with horses, it’s easier to express your emotions in a way that uplifts you into a state of peace. When you open up to the benefits that come with learning with horses, you get to feel just how much they can positively impact your life. When you’re not at peace with yourself, with your feelings and emotions, you’ll feel disconnected on all levels. This is how trauma feels like on the inside, and if you don’t do the inner work, there’s no way to regulate your inner peace. In today’s episode, I’ll be showing you how much more there is to horses than just riding. You’ll understand how horses can help people deal with trauma on different levels, and why you should consider learning with horses too. What You Will Learn In This Episode: What trauma is and how it generally affects human beings How horses can help us deal with trauma in ways that humans can’t The impact our trauma informed programme had on people Why we need to sync with our nervous systems when managing our emotions The unique way horses use all parts of their brain
Living in today’s world, we’ve gotten so lost in our own patterns that we’ve forgotten how to be in tune with our feelings. That's why we need horses to learn to be in sync with our emotions just as they are. Once you make a decision to understand how emotions work, you’ll begin to learn the value of peace and practice it in your everyday life. This podcast is for you if you love horses; if you have tried all other sorts of talk therapy but it just hasn't worked, and you want to try something completely out of the box. It is for you if you have had trauma like me, and know deep down that there is something else out there that will get you on your own Highway to Healing. So what’s all that fuss about horses? And what is trauma-informed equine facilitated learning? As prey animals, horses have a highly tuned body that helps them to sense danger. They are super-tuned into nature, into the weather, how things change around them, and how their fellow herd members are feeling. As humans, we are also able to recognise the sensations in our body, as we too have evolved from an animal. So learning with an animal helps us go back to those age-old tools that we've forgotten. Understanding the psychology of horses and how they've evolved helps us to understand trauma and how to process it. Taking Back the Reins podcast is going to be packed with tools and insights to help keep you in tune with your instincts, and to raise your mind-body awareness. I’ll be teaching you how to be mindful of your surroundings, and how to become emotionally agile enough to manage the symptoms of anxiety and depression at its early stage. I can’t wait to share with you how horses have helped me and many hundreds of people that we’ve helped in our business. So if you’re ready to take back the reins of your life, stay tuned and join me on this educational ride!
