So what is sociology anyway? Sociology tends to be a background discipline. Our research impacts the world around us, but you rarely hear about sociologists in the news.
Have you ever wondered how society works? Have you ever been people-watching and realized, wow, we’re really weird creatures. Why do we wait in line? Why do we shake hands when greeting people in the United States? Why do other cultures have different ways of greeting people? Why do we go to school? How has going to college become something that is expected of so many people? Why is there still racism and sexism? How do all of these things impact us?
These are just some of the questions that sociologists set out to answer.
Dr. David Merolla joins Dr. Baker and her co-host Val to discuss what it means to be a sociologist, what a sociologist does, and how sociology can impact society.
Currently, Dr. Merolla is an associate professor and department chair in the Department of Sociology at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. His research interests include race and racism, sociology of education, and social psychology. He has been the recipient of the Wayne State Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award and Wayne State University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
