Rock Bridge Farmstead Podcast is about our story, and its about your stories. We want to share with you our journey over the years, hear from other homesteads, farmsteads, small business owners, and people following their dreams and passions. We are far from experts but we are all learning together. Come enjoy, listen and maybe learn a little something along the way.

June has been a busy month just like every other month of spring and summer. We've been lucky enough to make new friends at the farmers market and in our community. We were also very blessed to see old friends from Tennessee and West Virginia. Never a dull moment around here!

June for a beekeeper is is a VERY busy time. Not only are we in the final push for honey before summer but it's also prime market season. Once we have that beautiful liquid gold, we have to sell it. Bryan is heavy in the market scene and we do a few here and there above our weekly farmers market. Hope you enjoy this months bee chat!

RNs to Reindeer Farmers! COVID wasn't all bad! It caused us to rethink our lives working in a busy 60 bed ER to moving two states away to open a reindeer farm. We now have 6 reindeer and do small group tours for eager reindeer learners. We also keep bees and have chickens, turkeys, and two new piglets. We enjoy our simpler country life and look forward to more magic to come.

On this episode we talk about our very first farmers market. It was such a refreshing time being part of a greater community. We took our observation hive with us, and everyone really seemed to enjoy it. Swarm season for us is officially on, and we are at 5, maybe 6 swarms caught in swarm traps. Catching swarms is so much fun and a great way to add numbers to your apiary.

I've always been a gardener at heart, even in my early years. Growing food stirred something in my heart that I didn't quite understand, and has lead to preserving our harvests, cheesemaking, soapmaking, bread baking, mycology, beekeeping and so much more. We live outside Raleigh, NC, and utilize our 1/3 acre where we live as well as 10 acres that we purchased 4 years ago. My goal is to inspire my family, friends and others in our community and around the world to do something...whatever that may be...that helps to bring peace of mind and sustainability to them.

April is still early for beekeeping season in most places. Our colonies are growing and we are coming to the point where we are preparing for the upcoming honey flow. We are the Allens - first generation homesteaders forging a new path for our family of 6 (almost 7). We just moved in to the barndominium we built on our 5 acres at the first of this year, and have already jumped into the deep end with five KuneKunes and about 24 hens! Almost everything we’ve learned has been through trial and error with a splash of the occasional YouTube video or Pinterest post. While we are new at what we are doing, we are extremely passionate about sharing our story with those curious about the homesteading life!

It's the end of March and we're so close to the start of beekeeping season. In this episode Bryan and I talk about the last bit of spring prep work and the very beginning of build up in the bee yard. We talk about the struggles of feeding syrup to bees without large equipment, expansion and what that means for our long-term goals. We are a small meat and dairy goat farm. With registered Boers being our main focus. We raise Great Pyrenees. We also raise seasonal produce. I do a lot of canning. We raise our own beef, pork and chicken. We also have meat rabbits. We have been homesteading for 7-8 years now. We are a small business (just Bryan and Jen!) running a pollinator farm/beekeeping business in a suburban setting in Lakewood, Colorado. We keep bees on our property and others, running around forty hives currently. We grow lavender and other pollinator plants, distilling lavender and a couple of other herbs for their essential oils and hydrosols. Five years ago we bought property with a barn and pasture with no dreams of farming. It sat untouched for two years. We planted a garden three years ago and caught the bug. Renovations and clean-up of the farm began. Since then, we’ve added cows, chickens, fruit trees, & year round gardening. I grew up on a farm, but was never interested or participated. My husband, Devin, had no farming experience. We both work full-time and are learning how to cultivate our four acres.

Kelli is a fifth generation farmer hailing from Nebraska but has been in Kodiak , Alaska for the last 18 years. She began and runs the only grade a certified goat dairy in the state providing a sustainable product to her remote, disconnected is all community. She believes very much in investing in our future generation and leads a farm and ranch after school program, a summer youth internship program and a load of introductory farm camps.

Homesteading for Beginners Podcast
My husband and I started our homesteading journey 20 years ago in the mountains of southern California. We raised a lot of different animals and grew gardens for food. We were a part of a vibrant homesteading community in the small town of Tehachapi. Five years ago we sold just about everything a moved to north Georgia. We found our homestead Thankful Hill Farm two 3 years ago and have been slowly rebuilding our life here.
Right now we have horses and chickens and starting up our new garden space. We are parents to 3 adult children and 1 teen. And we also have 4 grandchildren.

We are a 8 1/2 acre Farmstead in central Kentucky, learning how to steward the land and creatures the way God designed. Our journey began with our own health crises, and as we began healing we realized the need to pursue land and animal health as much as our own. Our first livestock was honeybees and our farm management is modeled around creating an ecosystem in which honeybees can thrive. We use herbs and homeopathy daily for our own health and our creatures health. Sheep entered the picture two years ago and the wool, milk and meat have opened new doors for expanded farm sustainability.
The farm is a haven for fellow Emergency Service workers, missionaries, and friends in ministry to come enjoy nature while they give their souls a rest before continuing the good work God has called them to. We hope to inspire others to create similar havens in today's chaotic world.

We are Craig and Blue, off-grid homesteaders, organic farmers, artists, musicians, and hunters. Our 3 1/2 acre homestead rests in Blue Eye, Missouri, on the Arkansas border 30 minutes southwest of Branson. When Craig retired in April 2021, we sold our city house and our off-grid property, packed up and moved across the state to set up our new homestead.
We currently have 40 layer chickens, 7 ducks, 2 farm cats, a LGD dog, 4 pear trees, a blackberry thicket, and have just set up our first garden and begun planting our fruit tree orchard on our new property. We will continue growing and preserving our own vegetables, fruits and herbs as we did on our off-grid property.
Our future plans include raising meat chickens, turkeys, geese, rabbits, goats for milk, alpacas for wool, and honeybees. We are slowly increasing our sustainability every year as we work toward our “two bag” goal of eventually only requiring two bags of groceries once a month.

Ashley grew up on Long Island, NY, about an hour from New York City. Andrew grew up outside Saratoga, NY and was involved in agriculture from a young age (showing and breeding sheep and milking cows). We moved to Vermont in 2019 and started our homestead on 35 acres here in March 2020. Our first year, we kept 12 laying hens, raised 80 meat chickens and 2 pigs, and grew a large garden to become more self-sufficient. In 2021, we expanded to 18 laying hens, 150 meat chickens (we were selling to the community), 4 pigs, and we were able to add a pregnant dairy cow to our list! Fresh dairy is something that we are both passionate about and we hope to be able to sell milk and dairy products from the farmstead this year. We are also in the long process of turning our overgrown woods into silvopasture with the help of our pigs. We are both passionate about sharing where food comes from before it gets to the grocery store and growing/ raising delicious food to nourish our family!

We're Austen + Katie Garrett, and we're raising our children on a farm with ADGA + AGS registered Nigerian Dwarf goats, and honeybees.
We are an ADGA Plus herd, participating in DHIA (milk test), Linear Appraisal, and shows. Our monthly DHIA results are posted to our Facebook page, and saved on Instagram highlights. Since we have a small herd of Nigerian Dwarfs, we are picky about what animals stay. We breed for strong dairy qualities; looking at high producers in pounds and butterfat percentages, and does who are easy to both hand milk and machine milk. My goal is for breeders to find our goats of quality for additions to their breeding programs as they better the breed, and for small farms + homesteads to choose our goats as their dairy animal of choice over other options.
We believe in slowing down, opting outside, and teaching our kids about the lost arts that come with a small farm. We're located in Argyle and Alvord, small towns located just outside of Denton in the DFW metroplex.
“Koza” is Polish for “goat”. Katie is 3rd generation Polish American, with family still living and farming in Southern Poland. We embrace the simplicity and strive for the hospitality we see in our Polish family, and being able to honor those roots through our farm name is something we are proud of.

I have been a dietitian for 11 years and a self-taught homesteader for 9 years. I love how both of my worlds compliment each other so well! I grew up in the suburbs with only a small flower garden and a dog, so I definitely knew nothing about growing vegetables or raising chickens. I've always been in love with animals and valued high-quality food, so when my husband and I bought our 5 acre homestead in central Minnesota in 2013, I was ecstatic! Homesteading in central Minnesota definitely has its own challenges, but we love it here! Every year we have expanded a little bit and it's been a fun journey.

Josh and Mary are 3rd year beekeepers, both have full time jobs! Mary is a cardiac nurse, Josh is a bird hunting guide and dog trainer/ handler, also has a construction side business.
Their goal is to increase their bee colonies and maybe get some local pollination contracts, sell nucs, and queens. Mary would personally like to decrease her hours as a nurse and work more with the bees. They have 60 hives right now and growing!

I hail from a Southeastern Kentucky farming family (my Paw Paw & Grandmother) that raised beef cattle and tobacco for the cash crop on a 100 acre farm. Throughout my childhood, nothing made me happier than the month that I would go and stay on the farm during each summer to help work the farm. I loved the purity of farming, the smells of the barn and pastures and cows. Mid-pandemic when the real estate market was at its peak level of bonkers, we sold our suburbs HOA home and bought a 20 acre farm out in the countryside with our goal being to build a fully functional, self-sufficient homestead. We are 1 year into this exciting venture that I feel like I've dreamed of and planned for all of my life. We still have work to do but all of the pieces are in place now. As we've gone about this process, we've tried to keep our eye on the traditional way of doing things, clinging tightly to our roots and accumulating breeds of animal that are both functional for the homestead as well as a source of nourishment.

The Buzzard Farm is an alpaca farm, first and foremost. We have five alpaca and we are what is called a fiber farm. We do not breed our animals but we sell fiber. I am really passionate about sustainable fashion and would love to grow to be a part of a local movement where goods can be locally distributed through my animals. We just are not there quite yet. Right now, we have a farmstead blog where I talk about soap making, crafting, gardening and our shop. We sell soy wax candles, alpaca fiber, roasted coffee in limited releases, and fair trade alpaca wear able items such as scarfs, hats, and blankets. I have always loved small craft fairs. I will travel far and wide to attend them. I love talking with makers and learning about the work they put into each item created. I even ran a blog at one point that gave free advertising to local small artisans. I never thought of being one myself despite the fact that personally I was a soap maker, crafter, artist, and candle maker for quite some time.
That all changed, obviously. I was at a craft fair in Ohio and there was a tent with little handmade alpaca items and behind the tent, they had a fenced area with five of their alpaca. Before that moment, I had never seen an alpaca. I am completely starstruck with these animals. I asked every question I could and upon walking away (45 minutes later), I was convinced one day I would own an alpaca farm of my own.
At the time, I was living in the suburbs in a 1/4 acre house. I visited the alpaca farmers I met at the fair at their farm. They taught me how to care for alpacas, how alpaca ownership works, and so much invaluable information. I am so thankful for those amazing and caring people but I really think they never believed I was serious.
But I was.
The whole thing really fell together. I was at my son’s school and a friend’s mom was talking about how she wanted to re-home her alpaca and I overheard. I couldn’t believe there was even another mother at his school of 100 children that even had an interest in alpaca! So I immediately introduced myself. We became friends and a year later, I was asked if I wanted to adopt her four boys.
I of course agreed. At that point, I moved out of my suburban house and owned a small farm in the country with 20 chickens.
So now we are a small farm in the country with alpaca, chickens, ducks and counting!
I now sell my handmade items that I have been making for years.

Tooth Acres has always been a dream of mine . A combination of my two unique passions , dentistry and farming . We registered Tooth Acres Farm as an official farm and business during the pandemic. Most of our livestock has a dental related name thus, Dental_Goat at Tooth Acres was born.
Dentistry can be really challenging. I never imagined I’d relate to terms like burnout , depression or anxiety in a career I love so much. Those words were quickly becoming a new normal for me and I knew I had to take action. When reflecting on what happiness means to me, I am always brought back to my homestead . Sowing the seeds, caring for our animals, harvesting food and honey. Teaching our children this self sufficient way of life has never been more important. At the end of this life the kindness we plant and the lessons we teach is all we can truly leave behind.
My husband and I live in very rural West Virginia . When you live a rural as we do, the old Appalachian way of life or a sustainable life style becomes a necessity.
I was not raised in a way that would set me up successfully for this lifestyle. I do not have generations of grannies and great grannies who taught me life lessons or passed down their knowledge. My husbands family on the other hand comes from generations of farmers. They have taught me so much and we have also learned a lot on our own along the way. We are a first generation goat farm and beekeepers. My husband truly is like a Swiss Army knife and the backbone of this operation. He gives into all my crazy antics and usually has to fix something along the way.
One of the goals of our farm is to offer merchandise and products that we love to make and use and find value in ourselves. We currently sell various products such as all natural tooth powder, breath spray, chapstick and soap. We also sell eggs, honey ,and goats. We are working toward registered goat sales . Goats sold previously have not been registered. We hope to add some wood working items , more honey products, goat milk products, and larger scale onion and potato sales. We are still a work in progress and we are so thankful for the connections we are making with like minded homesteaders . At the end of the day my goats , this land and our life we are creating on the homestead has saved me. I hope to inspire others to find their happiness. Buy a few chickens, plant the tomatoes on your porch . Find a purpose that brings sunshine and light to your life but also makes this world a little bit better.

Rebecca grew up in South Carolina and never left. By day she digitizes and preserves local cultural heritage materials, and homesteads by night complete with backyard chickens, garden, and canning. She loves planning, strategizing, and generally making the world a more organized place.
Nathan turned his love of gardening into a market garden business as a teenager in western Michigan. A few years later he moved the farm to the sunnier and warmer South Carolina. When not farming for Growing Green Family Farms, he’s farming for pleasure. It’s hard to keep his hands out of the dirt!
They met the old-fashioned way with a mutual friend setting them up at a dance and have been inseparable ever since. Currently they are building a farmhouse on 23 acres and will be moving mid-2022.

"I grew up in Detroit, far away from any type of homesteading anything. My mom always had a garden but I never got into it. In high school my mom started making us eat fermented food, kombucha, and had shares of a goat herd for milk. I wasn’t into a single bit of it. But I’ve always wanted a farm. I’ve always wanted land and the freedom that comes with it. Alex grew up an hour away from Detroit in what I considered the “country.” He liked to garden and had dreams of greenhouses, freedom from “the man” and energy efficient homes. We always talked about wanting more land, a big garden, chickens and bees. In 2019 we moved to a 2 acre property outside of Cincinnati. Then the pandemic hit. We petitioned our township to allow backyard chickens and everything took off from there!"
