In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about their process of evaluating their progress and health for the year. Let us know if you want a copy of the sheet to process your own progress to Start | Stop | Continue. We are happy to send that to you.

START - Dr. Rodney is now a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner

Dr. Rodney enrolled in Functional Medicine University in October of 2023. We began to implement it in June of 2024 with the help of a comprehensive database that compiles the history and symptoms. The result is a road map of what testing to do first and specific protocols to address the most urgent health needs first.

We are seeing amazing results in those who are sticking to lifestyle changes and supplementation. If you would like to get more information simply call 972-802-8812 for a consultation.

Another START was to challenge ourselves to eat 9 cups of vegetables of varying colors every day. This has been a total game changer for our digestive system.
.
STOP - Exposure to Plastics

We are increasingly becoming aware of the danger of all the plastic that surrounds us. For that reason we did the following:
Threw out plastic ware and no use glass storage containers
Stopped using water bottles and provide filtered water in a glass dispenser in the office
Increased our sauna use to get rid of the toxins
Used more reusable shopping bags when at the grocery store
Pursued gardening more seriously so our vegetables are organic and plastic free

CONTINUE - Our health pursuit with simple life-long habits

We continue to eat most of our meals at home and love spending time at home and with our grandkids. We travel 2 miles to the office and go home every day to eat our lunch there. Karen takes a nap while Dr. Rodney cycles.

We continue to connect with life-long friends through travel.

  • In April we took a road trip to Iowa to celebrate the life of Dr. Rodney’s brother Reid. We had so much fun with family there.
  • In June we traveled to Santa Barbara for the anniversary party of Karen’s bestie in college and her husband.
  • In August we went to Cerrillos, Costa Rica where we spent a week with Karen’s best friend from high school in a beautiful tropical spot in the mountains.

Dr. Rodney is now a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner who would love to help you with your health issues. You can fill out a comprehensive questionnaire that gives you a road map on what root cause issues to address first as you begin to get healthier.

In this informative podcast session, Dr. Rodney and Karen define leaky gut, including reasons why it happens and what you can do about it.

What in the world is leaky gut?
Leaky gut is a term that is often misunderstood by very terms of its name. It actually is a condition that occurs due to gaps in the membrane lining your intestinal wall.

These tiny gaps allow toxic substances that should be confined to your digestive tract to escape into your bloodstream – hence the term leaky gut syndrome.

The toxic substances can come from numerous sources, such as waste products, undigested food particles or even Candida yeast overgrowth. The problem is that they can irritate your intestinal lining, eventually compromising its integrity and allowing a flow of toxic particles to "leak out" into your bloodstream. This flood of leaking particles can also promote an inflammatory reaction from your body that can result in a wide variety of symptoms

Do any of these symptoms describe how you feel?

  • Gas and bloating
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Sugar cravings
  • Cravings for junk food

Then you might have leaky gut

Why does leaky gut occur?

Most often leaky gut is caused by poor diet, certain medication and other toxins.
Your gut bacteria are very vulnerable to lifestyle and environmental factors so you need to avoid such as:

  • Sugar / fructose
  • Refined grains
  • Processed foods
  • Antibiotics (including antibiotics given to livestock for food production)
  • Chlorinated and fluoridated water
  • Antibacterial soaps, etc
  • Agricultural chemicals and pesticides
  • Pollution

What can you do about it?

Repair your digestive health with these lifestyle changes:

  • Eat natural whole foods
  • Include fermented food
  • Take probiotics
  • Reduce stress
  • Test for sensitivities and address root causes

Dr. Rodney is now a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner who would love to help you with your digestive issues. You can be tested for food sensitivities and leaky gut right in our office or in the comfort of your own home.

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the power of gratitude to impact your physical and mental health. In fact, your brain literally lights up when you express gratefulness.

How do you define gratitude?

Gratitude is a very real psychological phenomenon with measurable benefits for both your mind and body as you become aware of what you appreciate in others. It is more than a fleeting emotion and should become a stable trait we can become known to possess.
The more you practice gratitude, the more you strengthen the brain’s neural circuits for gratitude, making it easier to focus on feelings of gratitude.

What are some of the results of gratitude in your body?
We all know that gratitude causes us to focus on positivity. It also results in ways

  • Strengthens connections
  • Improves mental health
  • Enhances sleep
  • Reduces fatigue
  • Lessens stress
  • Upgrades cardiac health

According to research published by the American Psychological Association

How does gratitude rewire your brain?

Research from Frontiers in Psychology - MRI
Areas of brain with increased activity are as follows:

  • Anterior cingulate cortex
  • Medial prefrontal cortex

These parts of the brain stimulate happiness or relief, and play a role in how you make moral decisions and judge other people. These areas of the brain are also involved in self-processing.

An active practice of gratitude can increase neuron density and lead to greater emotional intelligence because the “neurons that fire together wire together.”

There is an increase in brain activity in these two areas when you express your gratitude.

Gratitude is self-perpetuating — the more you practice gratitude, the more you notice opportunities to be thankful.

In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen tackle a difficult topic about the impact of alcohol your body and particularly your brain.

New research shows that alcohol disrupts your gut health because it kills beneficial bacteria, potentially causing leaky gut syndrome and triggering inflammatory responses that affect your liver and brain

This is of particular concern to women because regular alcohol consumption can alter hormonal balance, increase estrogen levels and potentially raise cancer risk, especially for breast cancer

Unfortunately, even low levels of alcohol consumption can have a negative impact on brain structure by reducing overall brain volume and can affect the integrity of gray and white matter

You may be saying to yourself that people drink alcohol and seem to still live to a ripe old age. Keep in mind that in the Blue Zones those referenced grow their own grapes, make their own wine and make a small glass of wine part of their social tapestry. All of these are factors as you give yourself a gut check.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is a systematic approach that focuses on root causes why you are currently lacking optimum health by:

Identifying and addressing the root causes of disease.

  • Providing a systems-oriented approach
  • Engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership.
  • Addressing the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms

Functional medicine supports your very own expression of health and vitality.

What makes Functional Medicine practitioners different?

Functional medicine practitioners are different because they:

Spend time with their patients

  • Listen carefully to their histories
  • Look at a variety of subtle interactions that influence long-term health including:
    • Detailed history that includes genetic elements
    • Environmental conditions
    • Lifestyle factors (nutrition, diet, and exercise) that influence long-term health
    • Lab work to determine the beginning of possible complex, chronic diseases

Why did Dr. Rodney choose to study Functional Medicine?

Dr. Rodney had been interested in making a difference in the long-term health of our patients (we now call health partners).

This new functional approach allows us to partner with you and empower you to live a life that's relatively free of disability so you can go the distance to fulfill our life purpose.

We want to help those who have health issues that have been overlooked because they fall within the “normal” range yet know that something needs to change.

We look forward to partnering with you as a medical detective helping those willing to take responsibility for their own health by living a rejuvenation lifestyle.

In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen explore the importance of posture.

Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down.

Good posture improves your appearance and other physiologic functions of your body.

Researchers discovered that persons with a hyperkyphotic posture have a 144% greater rate of mortality. This happens because as you type of postural distortion pattern your organs are not allowed to work properly and your chances of dying before your time come close to doubling.

Your posture has a positive or negative influence on the daily activities that you do. Proper posture can only be maintained with adequate muscle flexibility and strength, normal joint motion in the spine and other body regions, as well as efficient postural muscles that are balanced on both sides of the spine. Also, you must recognize your postural habits at home and in the workplace in order work to correct them, if necessary.

Simply correcting your posture can enhance the quality of your life and overall health. Good posture demonstrates confidence, balance, pain free movement and enhanced physiologic function of your body. Whereas poor posture causes additional stress to the body, spinal degeneration, and diffuse pain. Good posture promotes movement efficiency and endurance and contributes to an overall feeling of well-being.

The return on investment for better posture will be astounding in later years. We simply cannot afford to neglect our postural needs, especially when so much of our ability to function is riding on the quality of our postural alignment. Posture is defined as “the relative position of the body at any one period of time”.

Correct posture or neutral posture is a position in which minimal stress is applied to the body’s muscles, tissues, joints, and ligaments, providing the most energy efficient movement.

You will have more fascia over the central and dominant side of the sternum or breastbone. This means the chest area of a dominant hand person may be tighter or more contracted, possibly causing rounded shoulders if poor posture is evident. In addition to creating stress on the fascia system this can cause a lot of issues and even pain.

The best way to correct it is:

  • Bring yourself into ideal posture
  • Extend and reach out your arms in a reversal of the way it was forward
  • Gently pull your head with the opposite hand
  • Another way to correct head-forward posture is with a posture pump

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen share 5 easy changes that will halt dementia and alzheimers. The number of Americans with Alzheimer's is predicted to more than double by 2050.

Make these secrets part of your daily life:
1-Take Omega 3’s (DHA)
DHA helps prevent Alzheimers because it reduces inflammation in the entire body (including the brain)

Higher DHA levels result in a 47% drop in Alzheimers due to::

  • Preservation of brain structure
  • Improved blood-barrier integrity
  • Lower cerebral amyloid levels

Listen to this podcast on this topic here.

2-Exercise and challenge your brain to increase neuroplasticity

Regular exercise can reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's by approximately 30% and 45%, respectively.
Completing puzzles, playing games, and taking adult education classes can also reduce the risk of dementia after the age of 70 by up to 11%.
Active mental activities like games, puzzles, and literacy classes provide the greatest cognitive benefits as they require problem-solving or processing and storing new information.

3-Maintain your life purpose
View life through a lens of hope (optimism)
Enjoy diverse leisure activities that make a difference in the lives of others
Cognitive benefits happen because of growth of neurons and synapses
Maintain and promote a sense of well-being

4-Pay attention to your gut health
Recent studies suggest that there is a link between poor gut health, specifically chronic constipation, and early dementia. Chronic constipation may not only be an indicator of gut health but may also be a warning sign of cognitive decline.
Researchers believe there is evidence connecting gut health to brain health. The researchers theorize that constipation and cognition are linked via the gut microbiome, which is also linked to various diseases like Alzheimer's.
People with constipation and worse cognition tended to have relatively few gut bacteria that produced butyrate, which is an important fatty acid that helps control inflammation.

5-Get your teeth cleaned regularly
A study published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation has found that periodontal (gum) disease leads to changes in your brain's microglial cells.

Microglia, which eliminate harmful substances in the Central Nervous System, can be generated from white blood cells called monocytes. Gum disease can hinder microglia's ability to digest amyloid plaque, leading to neuro-inflammation.

Older adults with gum disease and mouth infections are more likely to develop Alzheimer's. Nearly half of Americans aged 30 and above have periodontal disease.

  • Brush your teeth regularly
  • Floss
  • Use a Waterpik
  • Get regular dental cleanings.

In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about a topic that is important to your future health.

Here are the top 10 reasons why you should replace dangerous vegetable oils with healthy ones:

  1. Vegetable oils degenerate when heated and have been linked to certain types of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
  2. Vegetable oils contain high amounts of omega-6 linoleic acid. (Click here for the link on this topic.)
  3. Many oils - especially soy and corn - come from genetically engineered crops that have been exposed to glyphosates and cause gut damage and other health issues.
  4. These heated oils are linked to heart disease and link to tau proteins that are found in those with dementia.
  5. Vegetables oils were released to decrease cholesterol. Actually they damage the cell lining and get integrated into your cell and mitochondria.
  6. Once they have entered the cell membranes other stuff gets in that should not be there.
  7. These oils have an impact on hormone transporters in the cell membrane and your metabolism slows down.
  8. These oils also turn off the alarm system that your cell is having problems. Instead of disposing of the damaged cell, the growth continues and can be cancerous.
  9. When you eat these oils your body tolerates damaged and aged cells resulting in faster aging and age-related diseases.
  10. These oils introduce glyphosates that in time create leaky gut that in turn increase inflammation and result in allergies.

What can you do now that you have this information?

  • Throw out vegetable oils and replace them with healthy oils such as grass-fed butter, coconut and olive oils. (Be sure your olive oil is well sourced and kept pure.)
  • Avoid all pre-processed food because most contain seed oils.
  • Make your own salad dressing.

In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about five popular health myths that may be shortening your life.

Myth #1: You can make up for lack of exercise during the week by becoming a weekend warrior. The tendency for your body is that when you don’t use something you lose it. Here is an average daily scenario for many who sit eight to ten hours per day at work with very few breaks, drive an hour, sit and watch TV before falling into bed.

You have these muscles that cross joints that shorten from sitting too much. You put force on a tendon and activate that muscle while inhibiting the opposite side muscle group. A simple example is the hip flexor and the glutes where the glute gets weakened by sitting.

Myth #2: No pain, no gain.

The problem with that tendency is that the last part of that muscle then actually crosses the hip joint gets out of balance . And when you're in an exertion mode, not only are you working muscles that are already tight, but one side is tighter than the other, one side is weaker than the other. And that's a recipe for low back disaster, low back pain. If you're running, you can have injuries and other complications.

The no pain - no gain may have started with coaching for those who didn't want to work hard enough to be sore the next day.

The people that buy into this myth basically learn to ignore their body's warning signals such as scar tissue, restricted joints and lack of range of motion

Myth #3: More is better.

That's another health myth seen particularly with bodybuilders building muscles and models losing weight. Long distance runners get into it and don’t want to stop. More is better. We used to think that marathons were excessive. yet now with triathlons they run, cycle and swim.

Those doing ultramarathons or extreme bodybuilding are tapping into this oxidative stress that reaches free radical toxicity. The end product is all of these things that are almost like saying body rust.

“An extreme lifestyle will shorten your life.”

Health Myth #4: Don't waste your time with rest. Keep pushing.

You need to rest and get good sleep. That's why we do high intensity interval training, because we rest in between and we don't push past a certain point depending on our age. But we are the other part. We are consistent. It's important to do things every day with some rest days mixed in. So I contradicted myself right there. It's important to do it consistently and yet allow some rest days in between that's.

Health Myth #5: Supplements can make up for an unhealthy lifestyle.

There's some magic potion for women who want to look young. They're willing to inject rat poison into their face by their forehead. They're willing to get fillers around their mouth. And so instead of living a healthy lifestyle, eating healthy, avoiding the foods and the things that would cause that aging, getting enough sleep, all the things that we say that are longevity pillars, instead of doing that, they want something magic, a pill they can take that's going to erase all of that.

Live a Rejuvenation Lifestyle

  • Exercise regularly and consistently build your strength
  • Listen to your body when you feel pain and do something about it quickly
  • Be satisfied with incremental progress
  • Take time to rest
  • Eat real food and take quality supplements for what is no longer in the soil

Living a rejuvenation lifestyle is bringing all of the different factors into good balance.

Here are a few of the dangers:

  • Exposure to dangerous magnetic fields of mobile communication and infrastructure
  • Current standards recommended by FCC are no longer followed
  • Mounting evidence of non-thermal effects to human population from cell phones
  • Mobile phone radiation RFR constitutes a possible human carcinogen
  • 5G cellular base stations can be placed as close as 3 meters from the ground in proximity to home, schools and offices and they need ONE MILLION new antennas will be required to allow the 5G network to function
  • There is clear evidence that mobile phone radiation caused cancer in male rats along with cardiac and other damage.
  • Numerous studies show adverse biochemical changes where free radicals, increase in cancer and behavioral issues result from cell phone usage
  • No one is funding this research and the US government programs on this subject were defunded by Congress

Action steps

  1. Do not carry an active phone in your pocket or anywhere near your body
  2. Turn your phone to airplane mode
  3. Swap out airpods for wired headphones to protect your brain from EMF exposure
  4. Block blue light
  5. Create a “no phone zone” every night - put your phone in another room
  6. Turn off WIFI at night to reduce EMF exposure
  7. Purchase R2L Radiation-to-Light
  8. Supplements
  9. Magnesium - Magnesium is essential to ensuring the normal function of neurons and helps regulate neurotransmitters, which are the chemical messengers that help the cells of the brain communicate with each other, and with the rest of the body.
  10. Glutamate plays a major role in learning and memory. Any imbalance can disrupt nerve cell communication.
  11. Low levels of magnesium can lead to excess glutamate in the brain. When this happens, nerve cells can become overexcited, leading to nerve cell damage and/or death, a condition known as glutamate excitotoxicity that has been implicated in many neurodegenerative conditions, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, epilepsy, migraines, depression and chronic pain.
  12. Omega 3 to 6 ratio - DHA plays a significant role in mental health throughout early childhood and even into adulthood. In the brain, DHA is important for cellular membrane fluidity, function and neurotransmitter release. Evidence indicates that a low intake of omega-3s increases the risk for numerous mental health issues, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, bipolar disorder, depression and suicidal ideation.
  13. Glutathione -Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant non-protein thiol, and plays crucial roles in the antioxidant defense system and the maintenance of redox homeostasis in neurons. GSH depletion in the brain is a common finding in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, and can cause neurodegeneration prior to disease onset.

In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the dangers in seemingly "healthy" foods that you might be eating. If you are struggling with weight gain, stomach/digestive tract issues, auto-immune disease and/or swollen joints you might want to listen up.

What are lectins?
Lectins are proteins that bind to sugars and carbohydrates on the surface of most cells in your body. At the same time, they have no nutritional value because they are what the plant provides in order to keep pests away. The problems develop because your body cannot digest the lectins and tries to get them out of your body as quickly as possible through vomiting or diarrhea.

In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about a term called - inflammaging. Inflammation leads to premature aging. This podcast will reveal ways to change this issue.

Inflammation is what the body does to protect itself to heal when there is an injury. The problem arises when it becomes chronic because it leaves the body in a persistent state of alertness. This can lead to cancer, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and more.

This chronic inflammation can gets worse when you have visceral or abdominal fat because the fat cells can produce chemicals leading to inflammation.

5 Healthy Habits to Fight Inflammaging

  1. Eliminate lectins from the way you eat
  2. Work toward a healthy weight
  3. Move more
  4. Manage stress
  5. Make sleep a priority

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the role of essential oils to your overall health and longevity. Your need both Omega-6 and Omega-3s. This time we focus on the Omega-3s.

Here's what the Omega-3s will do for you:

Provide support for a strong heart
Omega-3s promote nerve transmission which helps the heart muscles as it fires off.
Promotes a healthy brain
The Omega-3s promote a better mood and overall brain health because they allow the neurons to get adequate nutrition. Many do not realize that your brain is 60% fat so it is dangerous to go on a low-fat diet.
Prevents maculardegeneration
Many are unaware of how important the moisture in your eyes is to maintain healthy vision and nerve transmission. Adequate Omega-3s help to maintain the moisture level in your eyes as well as the transmission of information to the optical nerves.
Minimizes joint pain
Research has shown the increasing your level of Omega-3s rivals taking over-the-counter pain medication for relief of joint and back pain. The good news is that the Omega-3s only have good results rather than giving you leaky gut.
Encourages proper development of the baby during pregnancy
It is critically important for pregnant women to have enough Omega-3s to establish a healthy foundation in the development of th baby's eyes, brain and nervous system.
Supports a strong immune system
Omega-3s help with the internal repair system when your immune system is under stress.
Nourishes skin, hair and nails
Omega-3s protect against age-related damage to these three components. It's a healthy way to look younger than your biological age.
Assists in recovering from exercise
Omega-3s support healthy lung function and enhance blood flow to different part of your body in order to recover quickly from exertion.
Supports digestive health
Omega-3s protect against free radicals to keep your gastrointestinal and digestive systems in top shape

How much Omega-3s should you be taking?
500 mg to avoid deficiency
1 gram for proactive support
2-4 grams for high intensity support

Your next step needs to be to call us at 972-802-8812 to set up an appointment to get a simple blood test to measure your Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio.

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about amazing research about a simple 10 second one leg stance assessment. There are numerous studies that show that your ability to balance on one leg for a mere 10 seconds will predict your chances of surviving from all-cause mortality.

The amazing part of these studies shows that those that cannot perform this simple test are setting themselves up for disability and an early death.

Who is at risk?

Basically everyone who is living a regular busy lifestyle.

What does it look like?

Your foot's behind your knee consistently. You're barefooted on a flat surface and your eyes are open. spread your arms out and count the seconds you can hold that pose.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine, published this study in June, 2022 where they studied 1,702 individuals for seven years tracking their lifespan.

What are important principles to keep in mind?

  1. Balance is important.
  2. Freedom from pain is caused by free nerve expression.
  3. Muscular strength is important from eating enough protein and regular movement
  4. Your neurons need to be receiving the right information from your eyes and vestibular system.

How can I improve my one-legged balance?

  1. Eat whole foods and plenty of protein.
  2. Move regularly and eliminate the results of a sedentary lifestyle.
  3. Avoid empty carbohydrates and sweets.
  4. Eat plenty of good fats.
  5. Visit a chiropractor on a consistent basis.

How can I safely increase how long I sustain my one-legged stand?

  1. Start small and build your confidence slowly and surely.
  2. Practice standing on one leg with a counter or back of a chair close by.
  3. Gradually increase the length of time on each leg.
  4. Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth.
  5. Use a red-light cold laser on your cerebellum. (For more information call us at 972-802-8812)

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the benefits of heat exposure. It is very helpful to slow down aging because when the body experiences heat stress it releases heat shock proteins that support your antioxidant capacity and repair damaged proteins so they return to proper structure and function.

Sauna use releases the ‘feel good’ endorphins (such as serotonin) and widens the blood vessels to improve circulation and blood flow.

10 Benefits of Heat Exposure

Fire up your immune system.
Heat exposure from sauna use stimulates your body's natural immune system by releasing cytokines, increasing heat shock proteins and stimulating antigen-presenting cells.
Increase your cell power.
Heat has been proven to positively impact your mitochondria, the ‘batteries’ powering your cells, helping your body naturally produce more energy and stay fit.
Slow down Father Time (aka: aging!).
Cell regeneration means you slow the aging process. And if you’re not quite convinced, check out the 20 year study of Finnish men that links two to three sauna sessions per week with a 23% decreased risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
Detoxify heavy metals and chemicals.
Everyday exposure to potentially toxic heavy metals through a variety of sources means even the most health conscious people still have toxins in the body. Regular sauna bathing helps excrete toxins such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.
Reduce blood pressure.
Sauna heat helps widen blood vessels and improve circulation, which reduces blood pressure.
Make your heart happy and healthy.
A 2018 study found that sauna bathing four to seven times per week reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by as much as 58%.
Optimize athletic performance.
Blood flow improvements from hyperthermic conditioning (heat conditioning) sends more blood to the heart, leading to an increase in plasma and red blood cell volume. That process delivers more oxygen throughout the body, fueling athletic performance.
Improve muscle function and recovery. As more blood flow and oxygen is delivered throughout the body, muscles increase in size and muscle breakdown is diminished. One study showed that two, one-hour sauna sessions for seven days straight increases production of the human growth hormone (HGH) by two to five times.
Fuel weight loss.
Regular sauna use is shown to regulate the appetite, increase metabolism, and improve oxygen utilization, helping to fuel weight loss along with a reduction in body fat.
Boost brain function.
The brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF increases with regular sauna use, activating the growth of new brain cells, better maintaining existing cells, and improving neuroplasticity, the brain’s process for forming new neural connections.
BONUS BENEFIT: improve emotional health and mood. When your body and brain are healthy, detoxified, and de-stressed, and you’ve boosted endorphins, your overall mood and emotional health improves.

In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the need to find great rest to prepare for deep sleep. There is restoration during the sleep cycle which can aid in your longevity.

Currently many are suffering from General Adaptive Syndrome duer to chronic stress that depletes the body's resources and diminishes your ability to adapt. In General Adaptive Syndrome there is an alarm reaction, a stage of resistance, and a stage of exhaustion. When this pattern is not corrected, you may become ill.

Chronic stress causes the adrenals to pump out too much cortisol (stress hormone) which depends on sleep timing, duration, and quality for their release.
Cortisol helps regulate other hormones in the body.

Poor sleep causes cortisol to be high when you wake up in the morning which can disrupt the balance between estrogen and progesterone. This is turn slows down your thyroid and slows down your metabolism.

Lack of sleep also affects hunger hormones, appetite and food intake which can lead to weight gain due to insulin resistance - particularly around your middle.

Leptin (feel full), ghrelin (feel hungry) and insulin (blood sugar) affect:

  • fullness
  • hunger
  • blood sugar regulation
  • fat storage

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland that’s associated with the body’s sleep-wake cycle.

It helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, so you can fall — and stay — asleep.

Disrupted or poor sleep can have impacts on melatonin and its role in promoting sleep in the brain.

Growth hormone
Human growth hormone (HGH), also known as somatotropin or growth hormone, plays a vital role in:

  • protein production and synthesis
  • muscle development
  • metabolism
  • immunity

Sleep impacts the amount and production of growth hormone in the body. This in turn may make it harder to repair injuries and more likely to accumulate belly fat.

Missing sleep can lead to:

  • reduced immunity
  • more frequent infections
  • increases in illnesses
  • spikes in appetite
  • higher calorie consumption
  • weight gain
  • toxic brain or brain fog

Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about true rest which is more than how well you sleep (although that is included). True rest is a state of being where you know that God is taking complete care of every aspect of your life so you can relax and be at peace.

What is rest?

The opposite of rest is a sense of hurry. Rest is a mindset where you are in an optimal state. Rest is so important to living a long healthy life because you need a place where you can get off the hamster wheel of work and relax.

Why is rest so important?

Stress leads to early death because it raises cortisol which leads to overworking the system. Inflammation causes a lot of diseases and is the result of stress.

How can you get better rest?

  1. Schedule restful days
  2. Reduce sense of threat
  3. Unplug from media
  4. Move consistently and with purpose
  5. Get 7 - 8 hours of sleep

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the Standard American Diet (SAD) and its impact on our health and potential longevity.

Despite the fact that the United States outspends more than most of the world on medical care, they rank 43rd in life expectancy among large wealthy countries.

What did you eat yesterday?

Was it nutrient rich or simply calorie rich?

Unfortunately, too many of us are in constant hurry resulting in popping pre-packaged food into the microwave or going through the drive-through. This type of food is calorie rich but has little nutritional value. To make matters worse, we crave more of these food because of the additives included in the package. We pack on extra pounds and damage our body's insulin regulation, deposit fat in the wrong places and increase inflammation throughout our bodies. All this could lead to an early grave.

Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about three words that are at the basis of Rejuvenation. These three words are: subluxations, mitochondria and neuroplasticity.

Rejuvenation is the possibility of growing healthier with each passing year instead of experiencing the automatic decline that is usually associated with getting older and expected with each passing year.

Subluxations are referred to often in the chiropractic field and is a partial misalignment of a joint resulting in diminished function of the nervous system and communication between the body part. It is so important to find a chiropractor you can trust to keep your spine in alignment.

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to rewire and develop new pathways. It was once thought that you had a limited number of brain cells. Now with new MRI's it's possible to show that learning something new can relight up areas of your brain. It's never too late to rejuvenate and learn to play an instrument, a language or a new way to get somewhere. Neurons revive when you give them novel movement and stimulation.

Mitochondria is the powerhouse of every cell. At STANCE Chiropractic we have a cold laser that allows the mitochondria to gain energy and heal through increased levels of Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP). The adjustments also release the blood flow that energizes each cell. Neuro rehabilitation can also promote novel coordination of eye movements along with exercises that improve posture and create a greater sense of balance.

How long do you want to live?

The answer to this question is rooted in your belief system, family history and health perceptions. We live in a society that has a distorted view of aging and that is what we challenge. In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about their belief system regarding longevity.

Some of the questions explored here are:

What’s your view of old age?
Your view of old age has been shaped by what our society says about it. It’s important to challenge the common experiences and tap into natural health God’s way.

What has been modeled in your family?

Many people don’t want to be a burden to their family or to society. Karen's father spent years in one of the Blue Zones and was vibrant until his last breath. He was mentally alert and in great shape up until 3 months before his move to Heaven.
I am grateful for this example and encourage you to find someone in your family or community that has this approach to aging.

Are you ready to challenge society’s view of aging?

At Stance Chiropractic we love to get you thinking about small changes you can make that will transform your future health.

How would you define rejuvenation?

Rejuvenation is a process whereby you provide you body with the proper nutrients, focus on alignment, practice balance and develop your core strength.

What is the role of HOPE in that equation?

Hope is a valuable ingredient in the Rejuvenation Lifestyle because you look longterm at the benefits of the daily changes you have made and the efforts to do your part in taking care of your self.

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about some amazing benefits in confronting our belief system regarding health and longevity. Confrontation is a good thing when it brings about needed changes while conflict becomes negative because of the fallout of strong emotions. Conflict is an explosion and confrontation becomes a bridge. Confrontation can reveal what is under the surfaces so you can improve your process through the feedback received. One secret is willingness to agree to disagree.

Health Myths to Confront:
1. Everything in moderation may not be healthy.
Do your research regarding the things that might be an open door to addiction and/or accumulate in your system.
2. Stay warm to avoid catching a cold.
Research shows that the more you practice cold exposure you give yourself margin for your hypothalamus to get the signal to warm you up. Incremental cold exposure boosts the immune system.
3. More exercise makes you healthier.
Energy production (ATP) drops with excessive exercise like running a marathon. Your immune system suffers as well. Short bursts of High Intensity Interval Training serve you better. 14.42
4. Work in a job you dislike so you can retire and do nothing.
Find your purpose and identity in relationships and activities you love rather than your profession. Focus on long-term relationships.
5. I'm too old to change and get healthy.
You need to confront that aging means pain and disabilities. As you take more fish oil you will reduce all cause mortality by 60%. Your body regenerates when you stop poor health habits and replace them appropriately.

The personal decision you make from your convictions will begin to improve health and increase your life span.

Dr. Rodney and Karen revisit our most popular podcast from last year. Magnesium is important and even miraculous.

How does magnesium work?
About 60% of the magnesium in your body occurs in bone, while the rest is in muscles, soft tissues, and fluids, including blood. This is important because one of its functions is to help biochemical reactions in the body. It is a helper in more than 600 reactions in your body.

What are the biochemical reactions magnesium activates?

Creating energy
Magnesium helps convert food into energy also known as ATP.
Energy is impossible without ATP, and ATP is useless without magnesium, because the synthesis of the ATP complex is one of the enzymatic reactions requiring
magnesium. What many people do not realize is that ATP needs to bind with magnesium to be active. In order for this to happen the ATP charge actually changes so that the ATP’s energy can be accessed. Every one of our 100 trillion cells needs activated ATP to conduct its biochemical processes.
Optimizing the mitochondria
Most health problems can be traced to dysfunction in the mitochondria. To get optimal performance your cells need to have the energy that is produced in the mitochondria (ATP) and magnesium helps with this cycle. You can increase the total number of mitochondria in your cells by engaging in exercise. However, in order for this new mitochondria to be created, you must have sufficient amounts of magnesium. Your ability to excel at athletic performance depends on your oxidative capacity - meaning how well your muscle cells consume oxygen which happens within the mitochondria.
Moving muscles
Magnesium is part of the process of movement in the muscles in the body. It helps the muscles contract and relax. The best example is that heart muscle and it beats consistently. You will get muscle cramps if you don’t have enough magnesium.
Monitoring blood sugar and insulin sensitivityA proper level of magnesium can prevent type 2 diabetes. Magnesium has been reported to improve glucose utilization and contribute to the homeostasis of a healthy blood glucose level.

What happens when you don’t have enough magnesium?
If you lack in cellular magnesium your metabolic function will suffer and that can snowball into more serious health problems.
When you don’t have enough magnesium you can suffer from:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Migraine headaches
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Sudden cardiac death

Why do we lack magnesium?
A main risk factor for magnesium deficiency is eating a junk food diet. You need to eat organic leafy green to get the magnesium residing at the center of the chlorophyll molecule.
Magnesium is also lost through stress, lack of sleep, alcohol consumption.

This podcast is the second part on the topic of savoring and gives you specific ways to make the most of your life's experiences. Here are the top five strategies:

Avoiding kill-joy thinking
Giving yourself permission to enjoy the moment without reservations or thoughts of what could go wrong . This means that you don’t let anything (OR ANYONE) dampen or take away from your joy. As you place value on faith, hope and love you can make the most of every experience.

Stop comparing your success to others
There is a temptation to compare your success with others particularly with the view projected on social media. Instead, compare only to your own experiences. You can squander your joy when comparing to others, particularly with their filters and carefully curated content. It is fine to compare your own experiences in terms of what you have learned or past experiences if they serve to prolong your own positive experience.

Sharing with others
Actively seeking and including other people in personal positive experiences and listening to shared stories about past events or future plans can amplify positive emotions.

They might point out relevant positive details we may have missed from an event.
Also, watching their emotional response can increase one’s own positive emotions.
Some emotions can be clapping, shouting and laughing to celebrate what you’ve shared

Counting blessings
By attending to and reflecting on a positive experience and the reasons one might be grateful for that experience, people can foster positive feelings.
Pay attention to the blessings by exploring the details such as hummingbirds, breeze and sun on mountain top at Ouray, Colorado.

Building memories
By intentionally creating a memory, people can choose the elements from that experience that evoke more pleasure in order to savor that moment to the fullest. Taking a mental picture of an event or keeping a journal or scrapbook to document special moments are some examples of how to build memories. Slowing it down to enjoy every frame of the video in order to fully savor the experiences of your life.

In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about their recent experience based on returning to a happy childhood memory. They explore the depths of savoring that experience.

To savor is to appreciate and experience delight in the positive experiences of your life. You are mindful of the amazing gift of life and maximize your presence in every single minute.

Before you savor you must be able to…

  • Have your basic physical and psychological needs met
  • Learn to rest
  • Connect to the present moment
  • Be mindful of your blessings
  • Tune in with the awareness that this is a great moment

Telling your storyPast
Remembering the past - fun time in the snow as a child - cross-country skiing

Present
Being in the moment - slowing down to enjoy every bite of food

Future
Anticipation of a trip or a vacation

Types of savoring
1. Experiences
This is the overview of the experience with the intention of focusing all your attention on appreciating positive events. As you are immersed in the experience you need to include sensations (such as the breeze on your face), emotions (what you felt), perceptions (what this means to you), thoughts (your thinking), and behaviors (what you do with this information).

  1. Processes
This requires you to trust the process of connecting the events with the positive emotions coming from what just happened. For example when you help a stranger, you recall the positive emotions felt while participating in that activity.

  2. Responses
Your response to the positive events of your life results in specific thoughts or behaviors will have a long-lasting effect. Your response either dampens or amplifies the intensity and duration of your positive emotions.

In our next podcast, we discuss specific ways and activities to encourage savoring.

In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about her daily practice of taking a nap. There are many benefits and a few cautions to keep in mind.

Benefits of naps:
1) Promotes memory retention and helps with perceptual learning
2) Increases cognition so you feel more alert
3) Boosts your immune system
4) Regulates blood pressure and reduces stress

The length of naps should be a full sleep cycle or stop somewhere before a half hour.

Inventors used naps regularly to aid them in coming up with inventions.

The best time to nap is right after lunch.

Try a "napuccino." The effects of the beverage take 20 minutes to kick in. Your espresso kicks so it is the best of both worlds - nap and sleep.

Avoid late naps so that you don't disturb your sleep at night (six hours later).

10 Ways to Clean Up Your Brain - Glymphatic System

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the glymphatic system.

What is the glymphatic system?

Your Central Nervous System is highly active so metabolic waste can build up quickly. It is also very sensitive to fluctuations in its environment, so the body needs to remove cellular garbage somehow, and that’s where the glymphatic system comes in.

Before the discovery of this brain-based garbage disposal system, scientists believed that each individual cell handled its own metabolic waste.

Why is the system called the glymphatic system?

The name is a reference to the glial cells, which are vital to this waste clearance system.

Glial cells get relatively little coverage, compared with neurons, despite being just as numerous in the brain. They were long considered little more than lowly support cells, but are now held in higher regard.

Glia protect, nourish, and insulate neurons. They also play a role in the immune system and, as we now know, the glymphatic system.

The glymphatic system, which runs parallel to arteries, also harnesses the pulsing of blood in circulation to help keep things moving.

As the blood vessels expand rhythmically, they drive the exchange of compounds between the interstitial space and the CSF(clean cerebrospinal fluid) which replaces the waste products

The glymphatic system connects with the lymphatic system of the rest of the body at the dura, a thick membrane of connective tissue that covers the CNS. The lymphatic system gets rid of the toxins, waste and other unwanted material.

Why is the glymphatic system so important?

If the cellular system became overloaded or slowed down as we aged, metabolic garbage would build up between the cells. This garbage includes products such as beta-amyloid — the protein associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

It is important to keep this metabolic waste from accumulating in the brain.
Brain cells perform autophagy (“self eating”) to scavenge additional waste by mopping up diseased and damaged bits of tau protein and beta-amyloid.

What are causes of glymphatic system congestion?

  • Chronic inflammation (Listen to more)
  • Poor sleep quality (Sleep secrets 1)
  • Blood sugar dysregulation
  • Chronic stress (Listen to more)
  • Environmental toxins

What are some action steps to improve glymphatic flow?

  1. Prioritize high quality deep sleep (Sleep Secrets 2)
  2. Eat according to an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan
  3. Consume high levels of omega 3 fatty acids
  4. Practice intermittent fasting
  5. Sleep on your side
  6. Move and exercise consistently
  7. Get regular chiropractic care
  8. Avoid chronic stress
  9. Avoid or reduce alcohol consumption
  10. Red light laser therapy

In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen address some novel ways to change the pain pattern associated with joint pain and other age-related symptoms. You will love the hope and encouragement you receive as you take your stance for health and vitality.

The Vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic system. When it is working well, it lessens with acute nociceptive pain (caused by injury, physical pressure or inflammation) and results in the following:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Higher respiratory rate
  • Slower digestion

Inflammation can begin to appear throughout the body when the control of acetylcholine and cortisol are dysregulated by this nerve.

When you have an altered microbiome the Vagus nerve sends a signal to the gut to regulate production & absorption of nutrients. You need great diversity gut microbiota.

Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain, Crohn’s disease, hypertension and diabetes all share in having a “disrupted autonomic nervous system.” The following three things will improve the autonomic nervous system and improve your vagal tone which helps change the pain patterns:

  1. Vagal nerve stimulation

  2. Singing

  3. Humming
  4. Gargling
  5. Laughter
  6. Pressing down on tongue with depressor
  7. Chewing food thoroughly
  8. Positive self-talk
  9. Stretches
  10. Prayer/meditation
  11. Light abdominal massage/percussor
  12. Vibration plate
  13. Chiropractic adjustments for the cervical area

  14. Mindfulness activities

Assist in managing chronic pain
Lower pain perception
Reduce stress
Minimize cortisol secretion which rebalances autonomics

  1. Exercise
Exercise and movement have an analgesic effect on chronic pain and help in the autonomic functions because they:

  2. Modify inflammation

  3. Improve neuro-immune response to stress
  4. Reduce stress, anxiety and fear avoidance

  • Strengthens connection

In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the health and longevity benefits of cold exposure. This practice definitely gets most of us out of our comfort zone. Here are a few of the reasons to give it a try:

1. Raises your metabolic rate

This has to be one of the most compelling because cold exposure increases your BAT - Brown Adipose Tissue which in turn increases your metabolic rate. That means you can eat more without gaining weight and have more energy.

2. Improves fat burning

Cold exposure ramps up fat burning as the body makes the attempt to keep your body warm. Some have even called it a "weapon" to combat obesity. Are you ready to turn the thermostat down a few degrees?
3. Boosts glycemic control and insulin sensitivity

When you activate BAT it can increase blood glucose so that it is burned as fuel or stored as glycogen (for use later) rather than fat. When insulin sensitivity goes up it improves metabolic health and has an anti-diabetic effect.

4. Diminishes inflammation and pain

Cold exposure is often used to alleviate musculoskeletal pain and inflammation in conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia. In one study, participants with inflammatory arthritis who took a two-minute cold shower each day for a week experienced significant reductions in pain. Cold exposure leads to vasoconstriction and reduces blood flow, which in turn reduces inflammation in tissues within and around injured sites.

5. Boosts mood

Researchers believe these beneficial effects may be tied to cold exposure initiating an endocrine response and increasing hormones like cortisone, epinephrine, norepinephrine, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC),and endorphins. On top of that, cold exposure may activate the body’s own pain control system.

6. Promotes better sleep quality

Cooler temperatures (between 60 and 67°F) help lower core temperature, which facilitates sleep. Also, body temperature is a strong driver of circadian rhythms. In fact, similar to light, temperature is one of the environmental cues that’s able to reset the body’s circadian clocks. Turn down the thermostat or take a cold shower.

7. Raises alertness & sharpens focus

A cold shower can wake you and your body up, promoting a higher state of alertness. The cold also stimulates deeper breathing, helping increase oxygenation of the body’s tissues.

8. Builds resilience

As you get acclimated to the cold your stress response (fight or flight) is blunted after repeated exposure. This is what hormetic stress is all about—exposure to small, transient stress leads to adaptation. This improved stress tolerance applies then to other areas of life through greater willpower and remaining cool-headed.

9. Enhances cognitive function

Considering the benefits on hormones (both stress & feel-good chemicals) and the enhancement in resiliency, it should not surprise you that cold exposure can also be good for the brain leading to better brain function. Repeated cold exposure is likely to be beneficial and neuroprotective because it regulates the release of inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide.

10. Connects to your true self

Cold exposure therapy builds mental toughness and provides a place where your worries disappear. As you learn to control your breathing your mind clears and focus ensues. You just might also find yourself.

Get started with cold exposure:

  • Turn down the thermostat
  • Cold and contrast showers
  • Cold-water immersion (e.g., cold pools, ice baths, etc.)
  • Go outside in cold temperatures

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about how to improve your neuroplasticity - the way your brain is functioning. When neurons fire together and follow repeated patterns they tend to wire together.

What you eat and drink can affect your brain. Here are a few easy ways to get the neurons to wiring and firing together.

1) Water is essential for your brain to work properly.
Also, be aware of what you drink that is a diuretic so be sure to drink extra water.

2) Coffee can help your attention span.
It is even more effective is to take advantage of the caffeine but also MCT oil derived from coconut oil. Be sure to cut back on the sugar and milk products that are in coffee.

3) Avoid sugary drinks (even juice).

4) Good fats from fish such as salmon, anchovies and sardines help your brain.
Avoid tuna because of mercury.

5) Eggs give you vitamins B6 and B12.
Choline is in the yolk because it is converted in neurotransmitters.

6) Eat good oils.
Olive oil and avocado oil should be on your shelf. Remove all seed oils.

7) Eat dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables and asparagus.
They provide folate and anti-inflammatory compounds.

8) Eat mushrooms
They have specific cognitive effects. They boost anti-inflammatory processes.

9) Add turmeric to your food
It contains curcumin and crosses the brain barrier. It is an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.

Let's follow the example of those who live in Blue Zones:

1) Cook with olive oil.
Use avocado oil when you need to cook with high heat.
The polyphenols in the oil clean your body of toxins. It helps the good bacteria in your microbiome. It actually also helps reduce the formation of bad stuff in the brain.

2) Eat more fish.
SMASH once a week. Salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines and herring. It's eaten in all five of the Blue Zones.

3) Eat 5 servings of vegetables per day.Avoid peas, corn, potatoes and green beans as these all contain lectins.
Instead, eat brussel sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, broccolini. Use it an excuse to add olive oil.

4) Snack on nuts.
It mimics fasting when you eat fat in between meals. The omega 3's boost your immune system and reduce inflammation. It raises good cholesterol and lowers blood pressure. Avoid peanuts and cashews. Eat pecans, walnuts, pistachios and macadamias.

5) Savor every bite.
Enjoy each bite and your satiety centers have time to catch up. Enjoy the moments when you eat. Enjoy what you eat.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.

In this Podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen are guests on Lesley McShane's podcast called Redesigning Midlife. It was a joy to speak about a vital topic in the longevity theme because there are simple ways to improve your posture.

Here are 5 Surprising Ways to Prevent Cognitive Decline through Better Posture

(1)Take consistent posture breaks.
A posture break simply reverses the position you’ve been in for the last 20 minutes - an
hour. Most of us are seated and hunched forward. Now it’s time to stand - raise your
arms - look up. If your eyes are tired from close work on your devices, put a finger above
your head and bring it toward your eyes. Focus until your eyes are crossed.(It’s a myth
that they will get stuck.) Hold for 10 seconds and stare into the distance.
Research:* Compared to uninterrupted sitting, short bouts of standing or light-intensity
cycling and walking may improve acute cognitive performance. (Mullane et al, 2017)

(2) Move more and do it mindfully.
Some great examples of mindful movement are yoga and Taichi. You can also perform
stretches morning and night. Walking with good posture also counts. Be aware of your
arm swing to make sure you are using opposite arm/leg movements as when a baby is
crawling.
Research: Studies with healthy seniors suggest that physical exercise can improve
cognition and quality of life. Physical exercise training leads to improved cognitive
functioning and psychological wellbeing in frail older adults. (Langlois et al, 2013)

(3) Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth.
Balancing requires different parts of the brain to fire together, as it takes in sensory
inputs from all over the body. The ability to balance may strengthen neural pathways,
boosting neuroplasticity (aka the brain’s ability to wire and rewire itself).
Research: 10 second balance on one leg predicts survival (all cause mortality) and fall
prevention (Araujo, C.G, eSilva, C,Laukkanen, J.A., Singh, M.F., Kunutsor, S.K., Myers,
J., Franca, J.F. & Castro, C.L., 2022)

(4) Engage in active sitting (on a balance ball or posture cushion).
Balancing on a stability ball forces you to engage your core muscles including those in
your deep back, abdominal, and pelvic floor. It also keeps your muscles engaged for
extended periods of time because you are doing a little extra core work which helps to
keep your spine properly aligned and stabilized.

Research: Research has documented that sitting for long periods of time is associated
with a higher risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression and anxiety. Studies
have found decreased hip mobility is one of the main reasons that older people tend to
fall. Chronic sitters have tight hip flexor muscles and weakening of the legs.

(5) Stand-Get a standing desk
Five minutes of standing activities (walking the dog, folding laundry or taking out the
trash) for every hour of sitting is sufficient to combat sedentary behavior.
Research: Researchers from UCLA discovered that adults without dementia who spent
more time sitting in the day had greater thinning of an area of the brain that is important for making memories (medial temporal lobe).

Your posture matters

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen continue to explore the possibilities of calming inflammation and improving health with small changes or shifts in your lifestyle. This is especially critical because inflammation is at the root of the following diseases: cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's.

These diseases are difficult for the person and those who are caring for them.

There is something you can do about this issue.

Your body receives a signal that there is a sense of threat from physical, chemical or emotional stress. The immune system launches a hearty response which is fine for a short term emergency but damaging when it lasts over six months.

If you have leaky gut you will have inflammation in your body and also in the brain.

Ask for a CPR test next time you get a physical exam. If the number is over 3, you have a potential problem with inflammation.

The way to bring this inflammation down is to change your lifestyle especially what you eat.

Make simple swaps to reduce inflammation:
1) Substitute Omega 6 oils with Omega3's
2) Eat more complex carbohydrates
3) Stay away from processed food that contain MSG (Here's the Podcast)

Inflammation is your body's warning signal. It is intended to be short-term.

Acute means it happens quickly because of something sudden like injury or an infection. The good guys are trying to protect you from death.

Chronic means that it lasts for longer than six months and when it comes to inflammation means problems for your health.

One of your body's defenses against inflammation is a cytokine storm. A cytokine is a small protein that serves as a communication system. It makes other immune cells move toward the target of a perceived enemy.

Your immune response is a blessing unless it's out of control.

One of the things that brought this about is that we consume too many Omega 6 oils. Our Omega 6 - 3 ratio that is out of control is affecting our health and our personalities (more on that later.)

Inflammation issues are so common they seem normal. They are not and we can show you how to eliminate the causes of chronic inflammation in the next episodes of Stance for Health.

How does laughter boost your immune system?

Laughter causes you to relax regarding your health and eliminates fear regarding the stressful situations of life around your health.

Your mind goes crazy yet laughter can bring you back to a place where your body can handle it.

Laughter stimulates the mesencephalon. You are giving yourself a adjustment when you laugh. This stimulates your immune system so the lymphocytes get armed to go to battle against an invasion - infection of the bad guys.

The lymphatic vessels are around the vagus nerve and so laughter can stimulate them.

Do your body a favor and have a good belly laugh on us!

You'll be glad you did!!!!

Cutting-edge 21st century science can be found in the good book and was written thousands of years ago:

A merry heart does good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones. Proverbs 17:22

This podcast shares how laughter can be a pleasant and  invigorating form of exercise. Someone called it "stationary jogging."

When you laugh, extra amounts of serotonin (the happiness hormone) are released.

Laughter is very helpful for the cardiovascular system because it is very similar to aerobic exercise.

You may not have noticed, but when you laugh you have to take deep breaths and get rid of excess air from your lungs. That is how you also get more oxygen in your blood and that improves energy and health.

Give it a try and let us know how you feel.

In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen candidly talk about the cortisol connection to chronic inflammation. They provide 6 ways to stop the invasion of cortisol into your system. Your health will improve and you will enjoy life again.

Your adrenals and amygdala set off the following potential responses when you feel threatened:
Flight
Fight
Freeze
Fawn

Your body is elegantly designed to handle short-term stress. The sympathetic system releases cortisol to have the energy for one of those four responses. The problem comes when you do not have to fight or run but rather sit in traffic.

Here are some ways to lower the cortisol that, in turn, will reduce chronic inflammation.

1) Put up the stop sign
You can literally put an imaginary stop sign in front of your face or take a break. This may simply be to change your perspective and introduce a different thought.
2)Go outside
Look at the horizon and get your bearings. A park is ideal because it will have a green space and the sounds of nature. Let yourself feel the gratitude for beauty that surrounds you. (For more inspiration check out Karen’s podcast
3) Ground
When you go outside, take off your shoes and walk on the grass or the beach. This connection with the energy of the earth will revitalize and restore your balance.
For more information on this topic listen to the following podcast on the topic:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/1875417/10700235
4)Take a deep breath (or two)
Shallow breathing is one of the ways that the sympathetic system prepares you for your emergency response to danger. Let the parasympathetic take over by taking a deep breath from your belly, holding it and releasing it slowly.
For more information on this topic list to the following podcast:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/1875417/9698179
5)Plan your next vacation or get-away
The planning can be as much (or more) fun than the actual trip. We currently look forward to out Sabbath rest with the same anticipation as a less stressful Christmas celebration. You can also recreate memories.
6) Focus on the positive
You can only think one thought at a time so make them positive. It takes conscious effort and yet, can easily become a way of life.

In this episode Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the role of systemic inflammation in four major life-threatening conditions in our current world: coronary artery disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimers. This conversation is based on a recent article from Harvard Medical School.

Takeaways:

Inflammation plays a major role in coronary artery disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimers.
Inflammation by itself is not bad.
Inflammation is part of the immune response. It is what happens when your body has a threat.
Inflammation is created as an immune response to a threat - physical, chemical or emotional.
The chemicals released by the innate immune system are meant to be temporary to allow the body to heal. The problem comes when they are left on for too long and you now have chronic inflammation - more on that here.
Once the threat is over the T-Cells should turn off the “high alert” sign. Unfortunately, this does not always happen due to our lifestyle.
Chronic inflammation is like a low-grade system inflammation that lingers in your system.
Aspirin was developed in 1899 to combat inflammation.
Doctors started prescribing corticosteroids to mimic the role of cortisol in the inflammation process.
The best way to find out if you have systemic inflammation is with a CRP blood test. You do not want to be higher than a 3 on this one.

Keys to switching off chronic inflammation:

  • Avoid tobacco and other toxins
  • Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum.
  • Maintain healthy weight
  • Exercise consistently
  • Eat real food rather than processed foods

In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the benefits and ease of a simple therapeutic technique called grounding. There are scientific reasons why you feel so good after a day of walking on the beach or going barefoot in the park.

What is grounding?
Grounding, also called earthing, is a therapeutic technique that involves doing activities that “ground” or electrically reconnect you to the earth. This practice has been around for years and capitalizes on the electro-chemical response of our bodies. These electrical charges can have positive effects on our bodies.

This practice relies on earthing science and grounding physics to explain how electrical charges from the earth can have positive effects on your body.

Why are we losing touch with the ground?
You are a bioelectrical being living on an electrical planet. Your body operates electrically. All of your cells transmit multiple frequencies that run, for example, your heart, immune system, muscles, and nervous system.

You rarely go barefoot or wear natural leather soles. In fact, for many decades now we wear rubber or plastic-soled shoes. The truth is, you’re disconnected. You’re ungrounded. You are not in touch with the earth. Could this disconnection be an overlooked factor in the increase of illnesses noted earlier?

What are the healing benefits of grounding?
Scientific research over more than a decade indicates that your body can be protected and helped—and that you feel better—when you electrically reconnect to the earth. That is, when you are grounded. Here are a few examples of potential benefits that have been reported in these studies:

  • Decreased levels of inflammation and pain
  • Reduced stress levels
  • Improved circulation
  • Greater energy for those with chronic fatigue
  • Relief from chronic pain
  • Reduction of anxiety and depression through a greater sense of well-being
  • Corrected sleep disorders
  • Improved blood flow
  • Faster wound healing

How can you reconnect to the earth?
Past societies went barefoot or wore leather footwear made from hides that allowed the energy from the earth to rise up into their bodies. They were grounded.

Walking barefoot
Have you ever been outside on a warm summer day and felt the urge to run barefoot in the grass? One of the easiest ways to ground yourself to the earth is to walk barefoot. Allowing your skin to touch the natural ground can provide you with grounding energy.
Lying on the ground
You can increase your skin-to-earth contact by lying on the ground. You can do it in the grass by the park or on the sand at the beach. Sit, stand, or walk on soil, grass, sand, or concrete. These are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw the Earth’s energy. Wood, asphalt, and vinyl are not conductive.
Submerging in water
According to advocates for grounding, water may be used to ground in the same way the physical earth is used for grounding. They suggest simply wading in a clear lake or swimming in the ocean as a way to ground yourself.

Using grounding products
For many people, however, there isn’t time in their current busy schedule to go out barefoot. So, there are also indoor options. Invest in grounding products—which can be used while sleeping, relaxing, or working.

Whatever route you take, get grounded and feel vibrant.

Stress and the Endocrine System

Nearly 80% of all health problems are stress related.

What causes stress in our lives?

Example: Driving in traffic when late to work

Causes of stress

  • Noise
  • Excessive junk food/alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Emotional pressures or deadlines
  • Life changes: birth, death, marriage, divorce
  • Holidays/change in routine
  • Self-perception
  • Isolation
  • Lack of sleep
  • Illness

General Adaptative Syndrome
What is General Adaptative Syndrome (GAS)?

Hans Selye called this pattern of stress the General Adaptative Syndrome: a pattern that begins with an alarm reaction, a stage of resistance and a stage of exhaustion.

Definition
Extended chronic stress depletes the body’s resources and ability to adapt. When the pattern continues untreated for long periods, the body’s ability to cope is compromised and illness results.

How does the endocrine system respond to GAS?
Adrenals
This pattern of stress results in increased demands on the adrenals which are responsible for the most conditions associated with stress: suppressed immune response, increased loss of nutrients and minerals, poor digestion, and poor absorption of nutrients.
Amygdala
The amygdala plays a major role in the processing of physiologic and behavioral responses to stress and is characterized by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated high inhibitory tone under resting state. Human and animal studies showed that stress leads to hyperactivity of amygdala, which is accompanied by the removal of inhibitory control.
Immune System
Chronic stress depletes the immune system which leads to illness, hormonal imbalances in adrenals, thymus, and other glands, which further depress immune function and further deplete the body.

Stress promotes the formation of extra free-radicals that can damage body tissues, raises cholesterol levels, and the composition of the blood changes to make it more prone to clotting.
Pituitary
The pituitary stimulates the release of more cortisone and cortisol, which inhibit the function of white blood cells. Stress causes an acceleration in metabolism, which triggers increased excretion of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and amino acids, and impairs digestion to the extent the body does not absorb nutrients well.
Thyroid
A growing body of evidence confirms that stress decreases levels of thyroid hormones [v] and higher levels of inflammatory cytokines lead to rapid decline in TSH and T3 and an increase in the inactive reverse T3 (rT3) [vi]. Thyroid and its hormones are truly complex.
What are the negative results of this stress?
Stress creates a great deal of damage such as:

  • Digestion problems
  • Insomnia
  • Memory loss
  • Decreased sexual drive
  • More adrenaline
  • Rapid heart beat
  • High blood pressure
  • Lowered immune function
  • Susceptibility to infections
  • Increased allergic reactions
  • Muscle tension
  • Back problems
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Cancer

How can you reduce stress?
1. Breathing correctly - Deep breathing is very relaxing. It will decrease the drivers of addiction and bring you into balance.

2.Eating real food - Make the food yourself. Read labels and avoid any product that has ingredients you cannot pronounce. Eat a lot of vegetables.

3.Exercising regularly - Put forth the effort every day.

4.Sleeping (Uncovering Sleep Secrets)

5.Taking supplements
Nutriwest De-Stress Formula (DSF) is an amazing help as they include glandulars.

In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about a complex system in your body that controls so many functions - the endocrine system. You will gain a foundation of what the different parts are and how each gland interacts in releasing the hormones you need to live a healthy and long life.

This complex system uses many different ways of chemical signaling through the circulatory system. These glands send hormones - chemical messengers that transmit vital information to control:

1) Sleep-wake cycle
2) Heart rate -
3) Sexual function
4) Blood sugar
and more.

Here are the glands in the endocrine system:
1) Hypothalamus - regulates many functions that keep you alive. You could call it the boss of the rest of these endocrine glands.
2) Pituitary - regulates growth and reproduction.
3) Pineal gland - produces melatonin just at the right time.
4) Thymus - shares in production of melatonin and puberty development along with the T-Cells.
5) Thyroid - affects metabolism - weight loss and gain.
6) Parathyroid - regulates calcium and magnesium levels in the body.
7) Adrenals - produce cortisol and adrenaline. They also regulate blood pressure. They interact with the thyroid and the liver.
8) Pancreas - controls blood sugar levels
9) Testes and ovaries - promotes sexual reproduction.

Unlike the circulatory system, in which the heart acts as a pump, the lymphatic system is a passive system. In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen share what you can do to immediately activate your lymphatic system to get it flowing and removing toxins again.

The human body is made up of several organs and glands that are responsible for excreting poisons from the body. The lymphatic system refers to this network of organs and glands. Unfortunately, most people’s lymphatic systems get blocked and do not work correctly. A person’s lymphatic system can get out of balance due to dietary inadequacies, a high intake of processed foods, and a lack of physical activity.

Here are 5 simple ways to rid your body of toxins:

1) Drink more water
2) Breathwork*
3) Bouncing
4) Hydrotherapy
5) Dry brushing

There are many more but these are inexpensive and easy to implement.

  • For more information on Breathwork, please listen to this podcast:

Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about a somewhat neglected body system - the lymphatic system. It does not have its own pumping system like the circulatory system.

Basically, the lymphatic system removes toxins and waste products from the body. Another vital role is to remove surplus fluid that drains from cells and tissues throughout the body and sends it to the circulation.

TakeawaysThe structure of the lymphatic system is different from the circulatory system.
It is slow acting and does not have a pump other than the muscles of your body to start moving the lymph liquid.
It's a filtration system that helps you choose your battles as far as fighting off the bad guys.
Lymph resembles the clear fluid (like plasma) that comes out of a wound.
It is the front line of defense for the immune system to transport what's needed to keep you healthy.

Create habits that will increase the function of your lymphatic system.

Dr. Rodney and Karen reflect on their weekend experiences. The last two years have been tough on families when they stopped getting together.

Takeaways
Reconnecting
Reconnecting to family is vital because that is part of the strength in residents of the Blue Zones where people live long lives without disability.

Concentrate on the moments of connection because they are precious.

Take every possible opportunity to get out of your comfort zone.

Create unforgettable and memorable scenarios.

What are creative ways to get precious hugs?
How can you initiate reconnection?

Rejuvenating
Rejuvenation comes from a place of rest because your senses are reawakened as you get still.

There is such a restful feeling that comes from being in nature. Listen to the birds and other sounds of nature.

  1. Enjoy every sunset whether it is cloudy or clear.
  2. Embrace the play of contrasts coming from discomfort - heat and cold.
  3. Enable hope in another generation for a good life in the future.

The benefits of true rest is increased creativity and awakened sense of wonder and awe of God and His creation.

Restarting
Start traditions and keep them.
Adapt and mold them.
Get the pictures consistently.
Other times, ditch the phone and take mental snapshots.

Are you struggling to give up eating junk food? You might be addicted to a hidden factor that is present in almost all pre-packaged food and most spice blends. In this episode Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about a topic near and dear to their hearts because of the health change they made three years ago to eliminate this hidden factor from what they eat.

That additive is MSG, a flavor enhancer that can be found in almost every pre-packaged food whether considered junk food or a healthy snack. Even items marked as having no MSG will have several other names on the pseudo-ingredient list.

What is it?
MonoSodium Glutamate (MSG) is much more than a seasoning like salt or pepper. In fact, it does not have a taste in and of itself. It makes food taste better, look fresher and smell better. It makes your salad dressing taste better and has even been added to baby food and infant formula. It is added so that people will want to keep on buying the product as can be seen the potato chip ad, “Bet you can’t eat just one…”

What is the history of this food additive?
A Japanese inventor identified a natural flavor in seaweed called “umami.” It did not become popular until World War II when the U S military found out that Japanese rations tasted so much better than their own.

Why is MSG so dangerous?
Dr. Russell Blaylock, a board-certified neurosurgeon wrote a book called Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills. MSG overexcites the taste cells to the point of damage or death causing brain damage in different degrees.
Regular consumption of MSG can lead to:

  • Eye damage
  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Obesity
  • Fatigue
  • Disorientation

How did it become so widely used?People began having a reaction known as “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” that had lots of side-effects including numbness and heart palpitations. The FDA identifies these as “short-term reactions.” In 1959, The FDA labeled MSG as “Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and it has remained the same ever since. When the public became aware of the dangers they became more aware of reading labels. As a result, the food industry quickly started using many other names for this additive.
The food industry has 13 other names for MSG:

  1. Autolyzed Yeast
  2. Glutamate
  3. Monopotassium Glutamate
  4. Textured Protein
  5. Yeast Nutrient
  6. Calcium Caseinate
  7. Glutamic Acid
  8. Monosodium Glutamate
  9. Yeast Extract
  10. Gelatin
  11. Hydrolyzed Protein
  12. Sodium Caseinate
  13. Yeast Food

25 Labels that contain MSG or create MSG during processing:

  1. Flavors and Flavorings
  2. Seasonings
  3. Natural Flavors and Flavoring
  4. Natural Pork Flavor
  5. Natural Beef Flavor
  6. Natural Chicken Flavor
  7. Soy Sauce
  8. Soy Protein Isolate/Soy Protein
  9. Boullion
  10. Stock
  11. Broth
  12. Malt Extract
  13. Malt Flavoring
  14. Barley Malt
  15. Anything Enzyme Modified
  16. Carrageenan
  17. Maltodextrin
  18. Pectin
  19. Enzymes
  20. Protease
  21. Corn Starch
  22. Citric Acid
  23. Powdered Milk
  24. Anything Protein Fortified
  25. Anything Ultra-Pasteurized

In this episode Dr. Rodney and Karen share their main supplements
8 Recommended Nutriwest Supplements from Dr. Dan Murphy
1)CORE LEVEL HEALTH RESERVE The vitamin/mineral content of food is linked to the quality of the soil in which the food was grown. Not only is our soil depleted of critically important minerals, our crops/soil are exposed to huge amounts of chemicals that bind to minerals, making them unavailable for human nutritional requirements. This is called nutrition inflation, and the entire world is suffering from it. A quality multiple vitamin/mineral supplement is now necessary for the majority of people on the planet. Importantly, the supplement should not contain copper.
2)COMPLETE OMEGA 3 ESSENTIALS 2:1 OR COMPLETE HI-POTENCY OMEGA 3 LIQUID -3,000 mg of EPA+DHA Omega-3’s from purified fish oil. -
The Theory of Everything: the majority of dysfunction is linked to inflammation. The most critical driver of inflammation is the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats. Americans consume far too many inflammatory omega-6s, and far too few anti-inflammatory omega-3s.
3) COMPLETE HI D3 - Vitamin D3, 5000 IU (125 mcg) -
Vitamin D does a lot more than build healthy bones. It is critical for immune system function and for brain physiology. Most Americans are significantly low in vitamin D levels and supplementation is necessary for almost everyone.
4) COMPLETE MG -
Magnesium (Mg++), 500 mg -
Magnesium is a cofactor for the activity of 700-800 human enzymes. Magnesium is the most important mineral for accessing human energy; it also supports the heart, blood vessels, and brain. Most Americans are significantly low in magnesium and supplementation is necessary for almost everyone.
5) COMPLETE K -
Vitamin K2-4 and K2-7 -
Without vitamin K2-4 and K2-7, calcium is deposited into arteries, joints and kidneys. This is why most people who take vitamin D should also take vitamin K. Individuals with blood clotting disorders or those on blood thinning drugs, should talk to their doctor before taking vitamin K. Individuals taking statin drugs often need to double vitamin K supplementation, but again should consult their Healthcare Provider.
6) COMPLETE ENERGY -
Co-Q-10 and PQQ enhance mitochondrial function. The mitochondria are the biological epicenter of aging; one is only as young as their mitochondria. Co-Q-10 production drops off significantly with age, and everyone over 40 or 50 years should supplement with Co-Q-10.
7) IODINE RESCUE
The most sensitive and susceptible human tissue to toxins is the thyroid gland. The thyroid is the “canary in the coal mine.” Iodine is required for thyroid health. Iodine levels are under attack by halogenated industrial chemicals such as fluorine, chlorine, and bromine, which are everywhere. “If you are not deficient at the start, iodine is still worth supplementing because it provides a supportive effect against many industrial chemicals.
8) TOTAL PROBIOTICS -
Probiotics with Prebiotics -
The microbiome is critical for health, immunity, neurology, blood vessels, etc. The microbiome is under assault from so many different reasons: antibiotics, pain drugs, chemicals including Roundup, birth control pills, dietary lectins, etc. This formula contains both probiotics and prebiotics for synergy.

In this episode Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about our health system and taking responsibility for your own health.

As you age, you might be expecting to take more and more medications with a somewhat fatalistic approach to the advancing years.

How old would you like to live to be if you could be disease free and free of all symptoms with your brain, your joints and your organs disease free?

We get a variety of answers in the clinic and most people say they would like to live to see their grandchildren.

Unfortunately, in our country the top two reasons for death are opioid overdose and suicide.

Root causes and prevention do not seem to be on the table with our health system. If you have pain, get to the root cause of that pain instead of taking a pill to mask it.

Pain tells you something is not right and for long-term results you will need to change your lifestyle. That is what we do at Stance Chiropractic.

You are not helpless when it comes to your health yet you must be intentional and swim upstream.

There ARE things you can do just like those who life in the Blue Zones - areas in the world where you have pockets of centenarians.

Statistics on World Health ranking for the United States (USA):
The Western medical mindset is of ranking health based on obesity, tobacco, clean air and clean water.
USA spends over $9400 per person on health issues.
USA ranked 36th (just behind Costa Rica).

We can change those statistics one person at a time.

We are here to help you take your Stance for Health.

In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen will discuss how to increase your serotonin levels naturally. Serotonin determines your mood, your appetite & digestion, how well you sleep and your emotions.

Your internal levels of happiness hormones make a huge difference in your mood and energy level. While dopamine releases a sense of happiness it is short-lived. Serotonin on the other hand stabilizes your mood for the long-term. The body sends messages between nerve cells via serotonin.

Where is most serotonin produced?

Although serotonin is manufactured in the brain, where it performs its primary functions, some 90% of our serotonin supply is found in the digestive tract and in blood platelets.

Where does the body make serotonin?

The intestines and the brain produce serotonin. It is also present in blood platelets and plays a role in the central nervous system (CNS). Occurring throughout the body, it appears to influence a range of physical and psychological functions.

Is serotonin produced in the gut?

Gut bacteria also produce hundreds of neurochemicals that the brain uses to regulate basic physiological processes as well as mental processes such as learning, memory and mood. For example, gut bacteria manufacture about 95 percent of the body’s supply of serotonin, which influences both mood and GI activity.

Where does serotonin come from in the brain?

In the central nervous system (CNS), serotonin is almost exclusively produced in neurons originating in the raphe nuclei located in the midline of the brainstem. These neurons that produce serotonin form the largest and most complex efferent system in the human brain.

What causes a lack of serotonin?

Several things can deplete your serotonin levels. You may get depressed due to life events. Trauma will always leave it’s mark in reducing serotonin. However, it can also be diminished with chronic stress. You can see then that serotonin deficiency can be both a cause and a result of depression.

What produces more serotonin?

Your diet plays an important part in producing serotonin. Eating foods that contain the essential amino acid known as tryptophan can help the body to produce more serotonin. Foods, including salmon, eggs, spinach, and seeds are among those that help boost serotonin naturally.

How do you increase levels of serotonin?

To increase serotonin levels, you should exercise regularly, improve your diet, get more light, get chiropractic adjustments, and use certain supplements. Low serotonin levels may be associated with depression, so it’s important to boost serotonin if you want to improve your mood and feel happier.

What supplements raise serotonin levels?

Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, has special importance as a precursor of tryptophan and serotonin and can also play a role in behavior and mood.
Magnesium is essential for many biochemical reactions in the body and brain.

Research has shown that vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids may modulate the creation, release, and function of serotonin. This is because tryptophan needs vitamin D to do its job. Omega-3s have also been shown to help brain dysfunction. This is because of their effect on serotonin production.

Which foods are rich in serotonin?

  • Salmon. Salmon is a rich source of tryptophan, which is important for producing serotonin.
  • Nuts and Seeds.
  • Turkey and Poultry.
  • Eggs.
  • Milk and Cheese.
  • Pineapple.

Your nervous system controls and coordinates all other systems in the body.

The posture system provides the physical framework for all other systems of the body to resist gravity and function within our environment.

The posture system is dynamic with constant micro movements in an effort to stabilize the posture system depending on the signals received from the cranial nerves.

Your brain is dynamic and craves complexity. Your movements are useful to the brain when they are complex and rewarding. Here we can see a “use it or lose it principle.”

Purpose of the Brain

Your brain’s main purpose is to create refined movement. And yet, we are interacting with our environment less and less over time. When there is a decrease in brain function you have a postural decline. Unfortunately, we are facing a new health epidemic of digital dementia.

Power Poses and Exercise

A power pose is a stance like Superman or Wonder Woman. You are stimulating the front side of your brain. Toward the back you have plug in points of the cranial nerves. You are making changes in your endocrine system and hormones.

When you stand in an open power pose you not only look more confident, you actually ARE more confident. Studies have shown that this posture stance brings about neuroendocrine and behavioral changes due to increased testosterone, decreased cortisol and the feeling of more power.

When you sit slouched over you are getting the opposite. Your cortisol increases because the adrenal gland put you in a fight-or-flight mode.

Stand and own your position.

Benefits of Exercise

Exercise for at least 30 minutes per day improves your mood. It also increases tryptophan which is needed to produce serotonin.

Role of Postural Neurology

The postural neurologist seeks to identify the “origin of distortion” and use brain-based postural correction techniques to improve posture and motor output.

The motor cortex controls voluntary movement on the opposite side of the body.

The sensory cortex integrates and processes sensory information. When the sensory cortex receives a message it processes what that message means and what to do about it.

What can you do to improve your posture immediately?

  1. Take consistent posture breaks. Stand up and do the opposite of what you are doing. Raise your hands. Take your eyes off the device and look at bright natural light in a green space. Take a power stance and smile. In essence, relax in a way that makes sense to your nervous system by extension.
  2. Take a 2 - 3 hour break from technology every day. Use your brain and release your imagination. It’s important to spend time outside. Your brain develops better in that environment. (This is especially important for children)
  3. Participate in consistent exercise or movement for 20 - 30 minutes every day. You are stimulating mitochondrial DNA to lengthening telomeres which increases your quality of life. Your body continues to grow and not grow stagnant. Otherwise you lose you connection to the outside world. You don’t have to run a marathon or lift heavy weights. In fact, best results come from High Intensity Interval Training.

Develop these habits and make them non-negotiable activities every day.

Please DM us so we can get you more information on postural neurology.

Discovering the Fountain of YouthNew research with centenarians in two Blue Zones is showing amazing possibilities that lifestyle changes can transform your health and allow you to live a long productive life.

People have been searching for secrets to delay the aging process - the proverbial Fountain of Youth. Ponce de Leon was sent out by the King of England to find an actual fountain that had the reputation of prolonging your youth or most recently stem cell research.

What are Blue Zones?
Blue Zones are areas where there are large pockets of people who live past that age of 100. What is most remarkable about them is that they have very little disability, are strong and active, and enjoy great health.

They are seldom ill, have no chronic inflammation and few infectious diseases. The majority are free of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes and obesity.

Centenarians Have Spectacular Guts
The human gut consists of trillions of symbiotic bacterial microbes that need to be fed. Research was done where they checked the fecal samples of centenarians for over two years in Japan and Italy. It was discovered that these centenarians had very diverse gut bacteria resulting in less inflammation. They feed their belly bugs so they thrive and do a great job with absorbing nutrients, boosting metabolism, improving sleep and helping mental health. What you eat makes a difference! These stellar centenarians eat lots of prebiotics and probiotics.

Probiotics
Probiotics are the helpful bacteria - the good guys.

Contrary to popular belief, the human body needs a certain amount of bacteria to function optimally. Over time, especially as we get older, the body’s ability to produce bacteria naturally declines. This is where eating more probiotic-rich foods can come into the picture.

Reasons for Probiotic Decline
Excessive alcohol consumption

  • Eating refined foods
  • Leading a sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress
  • Antibiotics

Best Probiotics to Eat

  • Sauerkraut
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Salted gherkin pickles
  • Brine cured olives
  • Raw cheese
  • Miso
  • Kimchi

Prebiotics
Prebiotic foods have high indigestible fiber which causes your gut bacteria to thrive and increase. When you eat junk food - as in processed foods and simple carbs - there is nothing left over for the belly bugs. These help you break down and absorb your food. As you get more good guys in there you keep the bad guys from multiplying.

Prebiotic foods are high in special types of fiber that support digestive health and even boost your immune system and improve your metabolic health. For best results eat them raw.

Best Prebiotics to Eat

  • Onions
  • Leeks
  • Garlic
  • Dark chocolate
  • Blueberries
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Purple potatoes
  • Spinach
  • Asparagus
  • Green plantain

Eating the right foods can make a huge difference

Please DM us so we can get you more information on quality probiotics to take.

Magnesium is one of the most vital minerals and assists in many body functions yet is one of the most deficient in our intake because many foods are depleted of magnesium. This podcast will explore the miracle of magnesium as seen in a book by Carolyn Dean.

Why is magnesium important?
Magnesium is vital to optimal health.
Moving muscles
Magnesium is part of the process of movement in the muscles in the body. It helps the muscles contract and relax. The best example is that heart muscle and it beats consistently. You will get muscle cramps if you don’t have enough magnesium.
Monitoring blood sugar and insulin sensitivityA proper level of magnesium and prevent type 2 diabetes.
Magnesium has been reported to improve glucose utilization and contribute to the homeostasis of a healthy blood glucose level.
Optimizing the mitochondria
We talked earlier about the role of ATP for energy. Here we want to look at how most health problems can be traced to dysfunction in the mitochondria. To get optimal performance your cells need to have the energy that is produced in the mitochondria (ATP).
Your ability to excel at athletic performance depends on your oxidative capacity - meaning how well your muscle cells consume oxygen which happens within the mitochondria.
Increasing the total number of mitochondria in your cells by engaging in exercise. However, in order for new mitochondria to be created, you must have sufficient amounts of magnesium.
Increasing the efficiency of your mitochondria to repair damage and produce ATP. This process also requires magnesium as a co-factor.

Heart disease and stroke are killing too many people today and yet, despite the focus on the problem, the numbers increase every day.

Myth 1: Cholesterol is your heart’s main enemy.
Many feel they are doing okay because they are on blood pressure medicine and are taking statins. These medicines do nothing to address the root cause of the problem and come with their own set of side-effects.

Cholesterol lab values are an inaccurate indicator of heart health.

Cholesterol is needed in your entire body’s metabolism - the nervous system needs cholesterol to transmit the messages accurately and without distortion

Statins have serious side-effects that can go misdiagnosed for years - pain and neuropathy along with brain-neurodegeneration.

The Great Cholesterol Myth presents more details on this subject:

Cholesterol is a fairly insignificant player in heart disease.

High cholesterol is a lousy predictor of heart attacks. Half the people admitted to hospitals with heart disease have normal cholesterol, and plenty of people with elevated cholesterol have perfectly healthy hearts.

There is no data showing statins have any impact on longevity.

Statin drugs have significant side effects, including loss of memory and libido, muscle pain and fatigue, and approximately 65 percent of doctors don't report those side effects, according to a 2007 study.

It is a myth that the higher your cholesterol, the shorter your lifespan.

FACT: In the Framingham Study, the people who actually lived the longest had the highest cholesterol.

Myth #2: Avoid all saturated fats.

Four decades ago there was a major adjustment of what would be considered healthy eating habits where saturated fats were declared the enemy to your heart. In reality, saturated fat is mostly neutral and may even have some health benefits. A recent peer-reviewed study has shown no association between saturated fat and heart disease.

‘The mantra that saturated fat must be removed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease has dominated dietary advice and guidelines for almost four decades. Yet scientific evidence shows that this advice has, paradoxically, increased our cardiovascular risks….’

Aseem Malhotra - Cardiologist - Croydon University Hospital

The actual culprit of many chronic diseases is eating processed carbohydrates and sugar. The additives 2. Carbohydrates/Sugar, Not Fat, is the Root of Heart Disease

In order to be healthy and avoid chronic disease, you should stay away from sugars, including fructose, as well as grains and processed foods. Eat a diet rich in organic vegetables, high quality protein, and ample amounts of healthful fats.

Myth #3: Exercise intensely so you can eat what you want to eat and be healthy.High to extreme amount of exercise can damage your body and ability to recover.

Moderate exercise is so much better for you. Eat a balanced diet and eliminate the junk food. Increase the healthy fats. Eat tons of green leafy vegetables. These foods will leave you completely satisfied so you are not craving the foods that harm your heart.

Action Steps to Bless Your Heart:

1)Focus on good nutrition with lots of vegetables

2)Eat as many healthy fats as you can consume

3)Focus on High Intensity Interval Training rather than extreme measures

Learn secrets about ways to enjoy true rest and relaxation and embrace five additional practical sleep tips to improve this vital part of your health journey.

The Spiritual Component of Sleep

Our society is a experiencing an epidemic of poor sleep.

Turn off your mind instead of:

  • Striving
  • Managing
  • Planning
  • Creating
  • Fixing
  • CONTROLLING

Resting comes as a result of hope - confident expectation of a good outcome no matter what you are going through right now.

Three important factors that inspire true rest

  1. God is good.
  2. God is faithful.
  3. God deserves my utmost confidence.

When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror, Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; for the Lord will be your confidence.

Proverbs 3:24-26

Enter into God’s rest

There is a place of rest where you can find abundance and security.

God has promised to supply all your needs and even your wants.

Pour out all your worries and stress upon him and leave them there, for he always tenderly cares for you.

I Peter 5:6-7 TPT

This portion of the podcast was inspired by the book by Robert Morris, Take the Day Off.

Sleep Secrets - Part 2

Sleep Tip #6: Limit blue light after sunset.

Technical Side:

Bright light (especially blue) stimulates your brain and tells you it is time to get going for the day. It stops (or delays) melatonin production that regulates your circadian rhythm.

Practical Side:

Discipline yourself to turn off your computer and devices three hours before bedtime. If that is too hard, then purchase blue-blocking glasses or install apps on your electronics.

Sleep Tip #7: Establish pre-sleep relaxing rituals.

Technical Side:

By creating a pre-sleep ritual, you’re establishing a clear association between certain activities and sleep.

Practical Side:

One of the best relaxing ‘regulars’ is to read a spiritual or uplifting book. Be sure to avoid e-Books at this stage of the day. A warm bath, calming music, stretching routine or relaxation exercises should be done one hour to 30 minutes before bedtime.

Sleep Tip #8: Regular exercise improves the quality of your sleep.

Technical Side:

The National Sleep Foundation reports that a new study that lends more evidence to mounting research showing the importance of exercise to improve the quality of sleep.

Practical Side:

The important factor as far as your sleep is concerned is to exercise consistently for a least 30 minutes every day. However, avoid timing it just before bedtime as it may keep you awake. The best time to exercise is in the morning.

Sleep Tip #9: Do controlled breathing exercises.

Technical Side:

Slow, deep breathing actually helps the body override the sympathetic system, which controls our fight-or-flight response, and lets the parasympathetic system ¬— which controls our ability to relax — take the wheel instead.

Focus on your breathing and release the anxious thoughts swarming around in your mind.

Sleep Tip #10: Monitor your response to chemical sleep disruptors.

Technical Side:

Researchers at Michigan’s Henry Ford Hospital’s Sleep Disorders & Research Center and Wayne State College of Medicine found that caffeine consumed even 6 hours before bedtime resulted in significantly diminished sleep quality and sleep quantity.

Practical Side:

Go ahead and enjoy your cup of coffee each morning. Find out what works best for you especially regarding the time when you need to stop consuming caffeine.

Uncovering Sleep Secrets - Part 1

Have you ever had one of those days where you woke up exhausted and all you can think about is how much longer you have to keep going before bed? But then when you finally fell into bed, you could not go to sleep? This episode addresses specific changes you can make today to get a good night’s sleep.

Why is sleep so important to my health?

When you sleep your body can repair itself. The better the quality of your sleep, the better your body functions and the better you feel. A good night sleep sets you up for success in your day because you are alert and energized.

The recent discovery of the glymphatic system shows that it helps your brain clean up the excess proteins and allows your body to produce the melatonin you need to get to sleep and stay asleep. This system works to clean out excess proteins while you are sleeping.

What happens when you don’t get enough sleep?

Poor sleep contributes to stress, mood changes, difficulty concentrating, work mistakes, hormone imbalance and weight gain.

We are in the middle of sleep-less epidemic where more than one third of our population in the United States doesn’t get the 7 - 8 hours of sleep required for healthy living.

The cost of poor sleep is staggering. The economic impact is over $400 billion dollars due to accidents and fatalities. Drowsy driving had a part in over 6,000 car crashes and those suffering from insomnia were seven times more likely to get into an accident at work.

Sleep Tip #1: Find a way to sleep in the dark.

Technical side: The technical side of this issue is found in the pineal gland that produces melatonin and the amount of light in your bedroom affects that production.

Practical side: Get rid of your night lights, close your door and use blackout shades. If you have to get up in the middle of the night, make sure you don’t turn on the light.

Sleep Tip #2: Keep the temperature in your bedroom between 60 and 80 degrees.

Technical side: Your body temperature drops to its lowest level while you are sleeping. This usually happens about four hours after you fall asleep. A cooler temperature mimics this natural rhythm in your body.

Practical application: Keep the thermostat at a steady moderate temperature. If you don’t want to pay high utility bills it might work for you to shed the heavy pajamas and use fewer bed coverings.

Sleep Tip #3: Go to bed early, ‘The best time is between 9 and 10 pm.

Technical part: Your body does most of its recharging in the adrenals between 11 pm and 1 am. This is especially important for your adrenal system.

Practical part: It is possible to establish a steady sleep rhythm through consistency.

Sleep Tip #4: Keep your bed as a place to sleep.

Technical part: When you use your bed to watch TV or to do work you might drift off to sleep only to wake up in the wee hours of the morning.

Practical part: You are not alone in this habit of watching TV in bed. A recent survey showed that approximately 90% of those surveyed made this their practice. For better sleep, move the TV out of the bedroom and make it a sanctuary for restful, peaceful sleep.

Sleep Tip #5: Go to bed every night and get up in the morning at the same time even on weekends.

Technical Side: A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism states that sleeping more on weekends may actually be bad for you because it changes your Circadian rhythm.

In this episode, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the benefits of the Low Light Laser Therapies (LLLT) that they use at STANCE Chiropractic Clinic.

Basically, the cold red light laser works at the cell level of the mitochondria that is found in every cell in your body. When the body receives laser therapy, the laser penetrates the tissue and stimulates the mitochondria to normalize production of ATP - Adenosine Triphosphate -(that provides energy to the cell). The result is that the cell receives renewed energy to perform the job it was programmed to do, that is, to repair every problem that might arise and bring things back to a healthy, natural condition.

Benefits of Using Laser Therapy

Listed below are some of the benefits of using laser therapy:

  • Improve strength
  • Increase range of motion
  • Accelerate healing
  • Inhibit pain
  • Reduce neurodegenerative diseases
  • Decrease free radical production.

We are so happy to be able to provide this way to decrease inflammation, reduce pain and heal tissue.

Targeted Fat Loss with Amazing Results

Intermittent Fasting - Fad or Foundation

Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about their practice of intermittent fasting.

Intermittent Fasting is very popular. It is when you refrain from eating for a period of time and then have a consistent window to eat.

Have you forgotten the feeling of hunger?

Our society says that success is to never have to go hungry.

Research shows that breakfast is the most important meal to skip.

Clear the road so the body can replenish

Stop the traffic on the GI tract.

The key is to eat the right kind of fats.

We follow the 16/8 window. Fast from bedtime until 11 am the next morning.

Avoid heavy carbs because they set off a hunger cycle.

Ageless Living Hacks:
1. Cut out snacks before bed.
2. Get healthy fats into body with MCT oil and heavy whipping cream in your coffee.

Dr. Rod and Karen share the beginnings of Stance Chiropractic.

Our desire at Stance Chiropractic is to equip you to stand with energy and life.

We were inspired by the life of Karen’s Dad who lived a vibrant life past the age of 100.

His lifestyle contributed to his longevity. He was a spiritual giant and mentor to many.

Health is not just the absence of disease or infirmity.

Vitality is determined by health choices.
