I'm the host, Professor Phaedra Carmen Pezzullo and, today, our guest is Dr. David Naguib Pellow, the Dehlsen and Department Chair of Environmental Studies and Director of the Global Environmental Justice Project at the University of California Santa Barbara. Professor Pellow has served on the Board of Directors of several community-based national and international organizations dedicated to improving the living and working environments for People of Color, immigrants, Indigenous peoples, and working-class communities, including the Global Action Research Center, the Center for Urban Transformation, Greenpeace USA, and International Rivers. He earned his B.A. in Sociology and Religious Studies at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University. To say Professor Pellow is prolific is an understatement. He has coedited 3 books and authored or coauthored 8 more—not to mention all his articles, chapters, and advocacy reports.

She is the author of three books and multiple coedited volumes and essays. She also is the coeditor of a new book series, Elements, for Duke University Press. Globally recognized as a leading scholar on gender, sexuality, and the environment, I am excited to talk with her today about her research on plastics, gender, and ocean life.

I'm the host, Professor Phaedra Pezzullo and, today, our guest is Erica Nuñez, Program Officer of the Plastics Initiative at The Ocean Foundation. Erica worked thirteen years for NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with her last position as an International Affairs Specialist and lead on international marine debris issues. In 2019, she left the federal government and began working for the Ocean Conservancy as part of their Trash Free Seas Program. Now, she leads The Ocean Foundation’s plastics program.

As both someone living with a rare and progressive collection of genetic disabilities, as well as a survivor of child exploitation, she provides social and medical education on each, but particularly where they intersect. She is most known for creating an accessibility-focused Straw Chart in 2018, which is why I have asked her to talk with me today.

I'm the host, Professor Phaedra Pezzullo. Today, our guest is Michelle Gabrieloff-Parish, co- founder of the Just Transition Collaborative with myself and Manuela SIfuentes and David Ciplet. Back then she was the Energy and Climate Justice finisher and then Assistant Director at the University of Colorado Boulder Environmental Center, including expertise in water, energy, food waste justice and more. Since 2020 she's been working remotely as the senior program manager of Climate Innovation at the soon to be renamed People's Climate Innovation Center based out of Oakland, which is part of the family of NGOs, known as the Movement Strategy Center Network. She founded Candelas Glows or Rocky Flats Glows, raising awareness about the radioactive dangers of Rocky Flats in Colorado before that, fighting to protect the health of everyone in the area. Michelle is a multi-ethnic author and poet ,student and teacher of ecological and permaculture design, organizer, wife and mother of three. I know I can talk with our guest for hours because I have many times before; so, today, I'm going to be focused on just a small area of her related expertise.

Today, our guest is Joe Andenmatten, the Director of the University of Colorado Boulder’s Disability Services. Joe earned a BA in History from one of my alma maters, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which alumni like us fondly call “UMass.” He earned a MA in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado and, during that time, interned with Veteran Affairs’ Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program. He has been a certified Rehabilitation Counselor since 2009 when he started as a Program Manager for a home for adults with developmental disabilities. He began at CU in 2014 as an Access Coordinator and became director in 2020, amid a global pandemic. The vision of the Disability Center at CU is a fully accessible, integrated, and universally designed campus community.

Today’s podcast is unusual because we are recording live as part of an event at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Our featured guest is Mia Ives-Rublee, is a disabled transracial adoptee who has dedicated her life’s work to civil rights activism. Ives-Rublee holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master’s degree in social work from UNC Chapel Hill. She currently is the director for the Disability Justice Initiative at American Progress. Mia probably is best known for founding the Women’s March Disability Caucus and co-organizing the original Women’s March on Washington in 2017. She was awarded by Glamour Magazine as one of 2017’s Women of the Year. Mia was also recognized by She the People as one of 20 Women of Color in Politics to Watch in 2020.
Mia Ives-Rublee has gone on to work with many more non-profit organizations and businesses, such as Families Belong Together, DC Action Lab, Adoptees for Justice, Fair Fight, People’s Collective for Justice and Liberation, and Lonely Whale. As a North Carolina community regional organizing director for the Elizabeth Warren Campaign for President, she communicated policies and organized events around specific issues affecting the disability and Asian American communities. Ives-Rublee also worked as the field director for Down Home NC to encourage rural residents to vote. She further organized with the Asian American Advocacy Fund and the Georgia Disability Vote Partnership to help elect Senator Jon Ossoff and the Reverend Senator Raphael Warnock during the 2021 election.

She has presented at the third UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi; Media for Social Impact Summit hosted at UN headquarters; the Global Citizen Movement Makers Summit; Climate Woke artists retreat for public figures to discuss the intersectionality of climate change and race; Defend Our Future’s Youth Fly In Dinner; and more.
Of course, I must note that Emy also began this amazing career, in part, with her studies at CU Boulder, graduating in 2013 with an undergraduate degree in International Affairs with a minor in Media Studies and French. Her work epitomizes cutting edge media, including brand development, social media strategy & management, influencer engagement, ghost writing, strategic communications, coalition building, public relations, and more.

I'm the host, Professor Phaedra Pezzullo. Today, our guest is Dr. Shahriar Hossain, a journalist, ecologist, and social justice advocate. Born in Bangladesh, he has been a pivotal leader in the global anti-plastic movement. Hossain is one of those public intellectuals that seems to have lived a hundred lives already. In brief, he is a reporter and editor, including membership in the Society for Environmental Journalists. He also has earned degrees in international relationships and a PhD journalism in India, as well as a PhD in environmental studies from Duke University. He has served as visiting faculty and a diplomat globally. He also is the founder and director of the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) since 1990.

He was born in Mexico and the US Mexico border about 15 minutes from where he now lives in southern California. He was raised in the US, alongside his parents who worked in avocado fields. Since the 1990s, Jose has been recognized as a leader in the environmental justice movement and the movement towards a just transition.

I'm the host, Professor Phaedra Pezzullo. Today, our guest is Nancy Bui, Vice-President of the Justice for Formosa Victims (JfFV) marine disaster in Vietnam. Mrs. Bui escaped from her homeland of Vietnam by boat with her two young children in 1979. In 1988, she published “Bot Bien,” meaning “Sea Foam”, a novel describing the hardships and drama of Vietnamese people who fled Vietnam in search of freedom. Now based in Austin, Texas, she also is the founder and President of the Vietnamese American Heritage Foundation (VAHF), as well as an award-winning producer of documentary films.

Today, our guest is Her Excellency Professor Judi Wakhungu, currently the ambassador of Kenya to the French Republic, Portugal, Serbia and Holy See.Her Excellency has been a global leader on conservation, waste management, and climate change. She previously was the first female to be appointed as Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources, during which time, she led bans on rhino horns and plastic bags. Before that, she earned a BS in geology from St Lawrence University in New York, a Master of Science degree in petroleum geology from Acadia University, and a PhD in energy resources management from Pennsylvania State University. Welcome, Her Excellency Professor Wakhungu.
