Adapting to hearing loss can be overwhelming no matter how you got here--suddenly or progressively. Hearing Loss LIVE! wants to help you take control of your hearing loss. Because we know that when you do, you will live more fully with fewer limits. We can help improve your communication obstacles in your day to day life. We at Hearing Loss LIVE! have about 100 years of experience between us in hearing loss. We have been at the very bottom of hearing loss, the very top and everything in between. Our past experience is based on mentoring others through other hearing loss organizations. Julia helped people with access to CART/live captioning, Chelle as a Hard of Hearing Assistant and later as Specialist for Utah for a number of years and Michele offering peer support and presenting to organizations and agencies on navigating the world with a hearing loss. For those with hearing loss and their families: We share knowledge, strategies and technology tips to smooth out the journey. We have 1 on 1 peer mentoring or group sessions for the Hard of Hearing and/or family and friends. Hearing loss is a communication disorder and small adjustments to communication habits for both sides can make a difference. Businesses, agencies and organizations: One in five people have a hearing loss, you’re seeing them everyday. How well are you serving them? Are you clear on the communication needs for the Hard of Hearing or do you confuse them with that of the Deaf Community? We offer consultation to clear up misconceptions and myths. With hearing loss nothing helps more than having visual cues. Gestures and body lanuguage play an important roll in understanding the context of what is being talked about. Some sign language, like the ABCs - fingerspelling- can be helpful if all parties are willing to learn.

Communication boundaries is a difficult subject. We worry that by implementing boundaries around our hearing loss we push others away. But the truth is we set boundaries all the time. We have to. Setting healthy communication boundaries that you can use every day with every one is change that will empower you to be the best you, you can be.

Our hearing partners play an important role in our hearing loss journey. Yet, often times we don't involve them. Is it because we are carrying the burden all by ourself? What if I were to tell you, your hearing partner may be carrying the burden too?
Communication changes with hearing loss. We talk about the collateral damage in our podcast with Gloria Pelletier. Only we can control that collateral damage.
But it must be a work in progress with both our hearing partners and ourselves working for a doable communication goal. And it starts with three simple rules:
1- Get each other's attention
2- Face each other.
3- Be within 6 feet.

We find that emotional roller coaster with hearing loss is not addressed when first diagnosed. Nor is it discussed as we continue to navigate our new world or the triggers that remind us how our hearing loss.

Recently, Chelle Wyatt experienced an open caption play at a small local theater. In the past when she had gone the assistive listening devices were not great and she had not been to the theater in years. Chelle was super excited to share her great new experience and all the work the theater had put in to make it disability friendly.
Wait. And they don't need the ADA to tell them this is the right thing to do?
Exactly! Join us as we sit down with Natalie Keezer, SLAC's Accessibility Coordinator on how a small very quaint Theater took our recent pandemic and used it to reform to be an all inclusive space.

Maclain Drake is well known hard of hearing artist who makes inclusive music venues for Deaf and Hard of Hearing with his company Vibe Music.
But in Utah he is also known as an inspiration to the hard of hearing community because of his continued advocacy for inclusivity of those with a hearing loss. He works with our local movie theaters and helping them to understand not just closed caption devices but the importance of open caption movies.
He recently went to his local city hall town council where he was able to advise them on what his accommodations would be to attend and be part of the community.
He also works with national hearing aid companies to help test and advice on products.
For us here at Hearing Loss LIVE! he is a reminder on what we can do to educate and participate in our local community to further educate inclusivity of folks with hearing loss.

One of those past experiences has been teaching lipreading. We have learned that there is more to lipreading than folks understand. And the misconception causes all sorts of problems. In this week's blog and podcast, we explain the importance of a telecoil and how it works with a loop.
You may not have a landline telephone anymore which has lead many folks to believe they don't need a telecoil, but there is a movement to add loops to many public venues. Which for most with hearing aids is the best way to get sound straight to their hearing aids, especially in public venues.
